Thanks go to the builders of the float, all of you that went to the casino to vote for it, and the members that represented the lodge during the parade of floats.

The float will be in the Trolls Den for a while longer, so stop down and take a look if you have the opportunity. This seems to have turned into a Thank you!

Last year our volunteers put in well over 0,000 hours.

1 MAKEN April 014 Volume 98 Issue 4 Our fundraising for upgrading the lodge building for our 014 centennial year is progressing very nicely, and I am taking this opportunity to thank all of you generous donors. We had a goal of raising $1,000, and have now raised over $7,000. And we are not waiting around to reach the goal before we start on much-needed improvements. By the middle of April the Marine Room, the lobby and the stairwell walls should be repaired and painted. This will be an impressive start on the upgrading project. Unfortunately our float that was entered in the Clearwater Casino s Fat Tuesday competition did not win, even though it was a great looking float. Thanks go to the builders of the float, all of you that went to the casino to vote for it, and the members that represented the lodge during the parade of floats. The casino did present the lodge with a check for $500 for taking the time to put together the float and enter it in their competition. So thanks go to the Clearwater Casino also. The float will be in the Trolls Den for a while longer, so stop down and take a look if you have the opportunity. This seems to have turned into a Thank you! kind of article, and that wouldn t be complete without thanking all the hardworking volunteers that keep the lodge going. Without them our lodge would be in sorry shape. Last year our volunteers put in well over 0,000 hours. Unfortunately it isn t really feasible to thank each of our volunteers individually; please take this as a start on recognizing all the work they do for the lodge, year after year after year. We can really use more volunteer help for our Spring Cleanup Day, April 7. I hope to see you at the lodge. David Rice President, Poulsbo Sons of Norway President s Message Meeting Highlights -Treasurer's report, $5,69.4 in the red, but this it typical for the first part of the year. -$,000 donation from Leikarringen youth dancers to the lodge -District two convention delegates nominated last month were elected -VP Glen Robbins will organize a float for Viking fest parade celebrating 00 years of Norwegian constitution and our upcoming 100 th anniversary -Golden member Diane Parris was recognized Attention Correction Contrary to our fund raising letter, donations to the Poulsbo Sons of Norway are NOT tax deductible. We are sorry for our error and hope that you will donate to our centennial renovation fund. Lodge Clean Up Day Be sure to mark your calendars for Sunday, April 7th at 9:30 a.m. to come in and help spruce up the Lodge. We will be cleaning every room. There will be cleaning materials and lists of what needs to be done. If you have favorite cleaning implements and materials that you wish to use, feel free to bring them. Workers will be treated to a free lunch. Please come and help clean your Lodge. Boxtops We need thousands of box tops to win the district boxtops for education challenge. Contest ends May 17. Put your boxtops for educations and soup labels in the box in the downstairs hall. This does not include rentals. Groups renting the lodge will make their own decisions.

Her program was incredibly informative and well liked. 014 Scholarships Poulsbo lodge is offering two $ scholarships for post high school students. These maybe used at University, or trade schools. Applications may be obtained from the scholarship committee chairman, Phil Swenson, telephone (360) Applicants need to be members of Sons of Norway or children or grandchildren of a member. Applications must be submitted by May 15, Memorial Service. In May we will remember all our lodge members who passed away in the last year. See more pictures on their website, nordicfolklore.com Ladies Club News The Ladies Club luncheon on April 3rd will feature an Easter hat parade, planned by Social Director Donna Daly. Ladies are encouraged to decorate a hat to wear. We will be entertaining ladies from the Bremerton Lodge Ladies Club. Kathy Moncrief is organizing the event with them and Doug Stuart is preparing the lunch. Sue Dabinett coordinated a lefse work party on March 13th. There were experienced and new volunteers making lefse for future use. Cribbage Tournament Join us in the Trolls Den Sunday, April 13 at 1:00 pm for a cribbage tournament. Prizes will be awarded to the winner. Bring a dish to share (potluck). Skajærtorsdag In Sweden, Maundy Thursday (or Skajærtorsdag) is celebrated in conjunction with the traditions of the old folk tale about påskkärringar, or Easter hags. According to old folk beliefs, a witch flew on a broom to meet the devil at Båkulla, where the devil and other evil spirits live. To commemorate this, children dress up like old women or men and go door to door exchanging small cards and gifts for candy, much like the celebration of Halloween in the United States. (see picture on front page) Maundy Thursday is also a holiday in Norway (but ironically enough, not in Sweden) and is typically seen as a first spring outing when shopping and garden planning are done. Borrowed Items If you have borrowed chafing dishes or other items from the Sons of Norway, please return them. We use many of our serving dishes for catered events and dinners and need all of them.

The assumption that everyone travels away during Easter is a big myth, many relax at home, and Easter in the city has become a popular idea. The vast majority celebrate Easter at home and in Oslo, it is time to enjoy the first beer of the season outside in the sun. Easter in the city can include hiking trips in the sun, museum visits, shopping on non-holidays, going to the movie theater and much more. Easter vacation is actually a special Norwegian phenomenon. Norway has a five-day consecutive weekend from Holy Thursday to the second Easter Day, which is always on Monday. With the long Easter holiday, people have more opportunity to travel. Until recently, Easter was a very quiet time. The Easter week was typically marked with closed shops and shutdown nightclubs because of the holidays. For many, Easter celebrations start on Palm Sunday weekend, which is actually the weekend before Easter actually occurs. Because it is not a holiday, shops are open on Holy Saturday (Easter Eve). Holy Saturday is typically the day that children receive their Easter eggs filled to the brim with candy. Many people arrange fun ski races and other activities. After the ski races or ski outings, many are tempted into enjoying a mug of spiced gløgg. In addition, Holy Saturday includes the great Easter feast. Many serve Easter lamb or chicken. Holy Saturday is without a doubt children s favorite day of Easter. Easter has many symbols, such as chickens, weeping willows, crosses and so on. Most people decorate with various Easter symbols and Easter colors. Crime is an important Easter tradition in Norway, especially with crime books and Easter crime shows on TV. Easter is a good time to relax, cozy up with family and friends, eat good food and of course, get outside. Norwegians love to hike and there is no real Easter without an Easter outing in the fresh air. Who Cleans up? Many of you were wondering who cleans up our streams in rivers when cars and other junk get dumped. Dr Jill Rolland, our March speaker, let us know that The Washington Dept. of Natural Resources has funds to help clean up. Dr Rolland will be sending some brochures about the fisheries science center. Thank you to everyone who helped on the Cod fish dinner

5 Cyberspace Let me ask you a question, If you became incapacitated today or didn t come home tonight, would your loved ones know where to find all of your assets? The reason I bring this up is that we are living in an age where more and more of our financial and personal data is going online. It seems that we have a digital site for everything. We use Quicken or Quick books to store our financial information, we have accounts with all types of companies of which most of them require an ID and a Password to access the information. Now back to the first part of this story, you are lying in a hospital bed, unable to communicate in any way, and your family has to be able to open these accounts to keep things going. Where can they find all of the IDs and Passwords for all of the accounts that you have created? I speak from experience, because I would open an account, create an ID and Password for the account, write it down on a piece of paper or the back of an envelope and then forget where I put the piece of paper or envelope. I know this has not happened to any of you, but I would go to open an account and it would ask for a password, oops, where is that password? I would say a few choice words as to why does everything need a password and by luck I would find the envelope I had written the password on. Now if this sounds familiar, just think of how difficult it will be for your loved ones or survivors to figure out how to open that securities account or any other account that requires a PASSWORD. Please, if you haven t already done it, gather all of your records and accounts and write down the ID and Password for each account. Place them in a safe deposit box or leave with a trusted attorney. One thing my wife and I have done is include our daughter on as having access to our safe deposit boxes. Do each of you have a current will or is it a cookie cutter type of will that states I leave everything to my spouse and if not my spouse to all my kids. What do you do when there are kids from prior marriages and now where does everything go. If your desire is to create family wars then just have a plain old vanilla type of will with no thoughts as to how you want assets to be distributed. Folks, when we pass we want our survivors to remember how we helped them during a very emotional time or we created a CYBER nightmare for them. The choice is yours!
