1 November 2010 Volume 94 Issue No. 11 Nov 6 th Lutefisk Dinner Nov 13 th Vets Night with Music Nov 25 th - Thanksgiving Nov 28 th Decorate Lodge Nov 28 th Advent Begins Her er det godt å bo! (This is a great place to live!). I dearly love the cool, clear days of fall. The air is so clean, and the leaves are changing. It s a great time of year to live in the Pacific Northwest! November is a busy month for your lodge. Special events this month include our annual Lutefisk Dinner, Lodge Elections, and Veteran s Appreciation Night. Our annual Lutefisk dinner will be held on Saturday, November 6. Ya sure ya betcha! This perennial favorite offers a taste of several Norwegian delicacies in addition to the fisk. Don t miss the opportunity to celebrate your heritage! Your Vice President, Fred Weatherford, is coordinating this event and could always use some more volunteers; so give him a call if you can spare a few hours that day. Annual elections will be held at our meeting on November 9. Your nominating committee has completed their work and the proposed slate of officers for 2011 is listed elsewhere in this Måken. I appreciate their efforts and am pleased to see that there will be some new faces on the board next year. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the meeting. Our program that night will feature a video on the building of the Fram, the vessel used by both Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen in their explorations of the Arctic and Antarctic. So come to the meeting to participate and vote. Veteran s Appreciation Night is the following Saturday, November 13. This very special event offers an opportunity for all of us to thank our veterans, past and present, for their service. Please come down and honor these men and women whose sacrifice helps secure the promise of freedom for all of us. Finally, on Sunday, November 28, we will be decorating the lodge for the holiday season. The lodge always looks so nice with the greenery and lighting throughout. Please come down and help out. The camaraderie is wonderful, and food and drinks will be provided. Details of these and other lodge events are elsewhere in this issue of the Måken. I hope you join me at the lodge to take advantage of all that we have to offer. Until then, have a wonderful November and a great Thanksgiving. Ha det bra! Applications for queen and princess of the lodge are still available. The Ladies Club is raffling off a beautifully crafted cedar chest donated by Donna Breuer s son. 3 MEMBER COMMENTS From the Desk of Your Editor: Thanksgiving is almost here so remember to take time to be thankful for everything you have! Fall is once again surprising us with cold but sunny days reminding us how beautiful the Pacific Northwest is! Speaking of the Pacific Northwest, Jeff Foxworthy had his own version of how to identify those of us who choose to live in this area. Here are the 30 clues: 1. You know the state flower (Mildew). 2. You feel guilty throwing aluminum cans or paper in the trash. 3. You use the statement "sun break" and know what it means. 4. You know more than 10 ways to order coffee. 5. You know more people who own boats than air conditioners. 6 You feel overdressed wearing a suit to a nice restaurant. 7. You stand on a deserted corner in the rain waiting for the "Walk" signal. 8. You consider that, if it has no snow or has not recently erupted, it is not a real mountain. 9. You can taste the difference between Starbucks, Seattle's Best, and Veneto's. 10. You know the difference between Chinook, Coho, and Sockeye Salmon. 11. You know how to pronounce Sequim, Sekiu, Puyallup, Issaquah, Oregon, Yakima, and Willamette. 12. You consider swimming an indoor sport. 13. You can tell the difference between Japanese, Chinese, and Thai food. 14. In winter, you go to work in the dark and come home in the dark-while only working eight-hour days. 15. You never go camping without waterproof matches and a poncho. 16. You are not fazed by "Today's forecast: showers followed by rain," and "Tomorrow's forecast: rain followed by showers." 17. You have no concept of humidity without precipitation. 18. You know that Boring is a town in Oregon and not just a state of mind. 19.You can point to at least two volcanoes, even if you cannot see through the cloud cover. 20. You notice, "The mountain is out" when it is a pretty day and you can actually see it. 21. You put on your shorts when the temperature gets above 50, but still wear your hiking boots and parka. 22. You switch to your sandals when it gets about 60, but keep the socks on. 23. You have actually used your mountain bike on a mountain. 24. You think people who use umbrellas are either wimps or tourists. 25. You buy new sunglasses every year because you cannot find the old ones after such a long time. 26. You measure distance in hours. 27. You often switch from "heat" to "a/c" in the same day. 28. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit under a raincoat. 29. You know all the important seasons: Almost Winter, Winter, Still Raining (spring), Road Construction (summer), and Deer & Elk Season (fall). and 30. You actually understand these jokes! Lodge Officers for 2010: The following is the slate of officers elected to lead your lodge during If you have questions or concerns about your lodge or would like to volunteer in some area, please contact Vicky in the office or feel free to contact any of these officers: President Skip Walsh Vice President Fred Weatherford Sports Director Dan O Connell Counselor David Rice Cultural Director Grace Overby Social Director open Foundation Director Phil Swenson Secretary Barb Mitchusson Historian Kristin Holt Asst Secretary Julie Swenson Publicity Director Rhonda Mitchusson Financial Sec Mary Gerstel Editor Sherry White Youth Director Joanne Graves Treasurer Kathy Moncrief Musician Bonnie Schroeder/Jan Peterson Trustee Vern Herrick Trustee Myrtle Jodry* Trustee Shirl Nadeau * Greeter #1 Bob Schulte Greeter #2 Dorothy Walsh Auditor Phil Swenson* Auditor Tony Smallbeck* Auditor Bill Arness Marshall Robert Kodalen Asst Marshall Donna Rice Bldg Assn Pres Bob Loveland *elected in previous years ONCE UPON A TIME Once upon a time we used to teach folks how to build a solid financial base. Not any more! We teach people how to put all their funds at risk and then hope or pray for the best. What I mean by all of this is that before computers, cell phones, and jet planes we were taught that to start, you build a solid financial base before you put any funds at risk. Life Insurance companies grew to be giants by offering folks guaranteed products such as cash value whole life and fixed annuities. These aren t glamorous products that one would stand around having coffee and bragging how their whole life insurance policy is doing. No, these are products that, when all else fails, these products get you through the tough times. Lose your job or get disabled and see if you can refinance your home or get a loan from a bank. When the GREAT DEPRESSION happened, people turned to their life insurance policies and annuities to help carry them through the tough times. Some of us are old enough to remember those times. Today it is completely different, we teach people to put their hard earned money into 401Ks and IRAs and then hope that those funds will grow, not realizing that those are government programs and controlled by the government. Don t believe me, and then try taking your money out penalty free before age 59 ½ or NOT taking it out after 70 ½. Please understand, I m not saying not to have these products, but first have a solid financial base under you so that if the winds of change come along, like they are now, your financial house will not be like the one in the story of the Three Little Pigs. One of them built his house out of straw and when bad times hit (the big bad wolf) he lost everything. The one who built out of sticks did a little better, but still lost everything. But the one, who built out of bricks, like we used to teach, withstood the negative times. We need to teach our children what we used to do to prepare for all that life could throw at you and still survive. Life insurance is one of the products that, when we die, probate is avoided. Most of our other assets will go through probate unless we have a living trust and have funded it. Also life insurance in the state of Washington cannot be touched if we are sued. An important benefit provided by the Sons of Norway is that each member is entitled to a Free Financial Review. This will help to determine if you are prepared for the Big Bad Wolf! For free, no obligation information about our Nordic Annuities and Life Insurance plans, please telephone me at (866) or me at tipper13@comcast.net. Marlene Taylor, a Charter Life Underwriter, (CLU) will be able to assist you in all of your estate planning needs. She and her husband have an insurance agency in Shelton, Washington that handles all lines of insurance. She can be contacted at Ralph M. Naddeo Financial Benefits Counselor , tipper13@comcast.net

Answer to October s monthly question: September 3 to 13, 1752 never existed. The Gregorian calendar was replacing the Julian calendar and, in order to bring the calendar up to the correct date since it was 11 days behind, September 2, 1752 was immediately followed by September 14, Fylke Shields If you missed the October lodge meeting, you missed seeing the first group of Norwegian Fylke shields being made by lodge member George Riddle. George is making a complete series of 19 hand-carved cedar shields representing the 19 Norwegian Fylkes (counties). The shields will be displayed in our lodge when they are finished. Thank you, George, the Fylke Shields will be a lovely addition! Poulsbo Leikarringen folk dancers will do a selection of Norwegian dances and Vestre Sund Mannskor will sing Scandinavian songs for your listening pleasure. Julefest will be celebrated in Poulsbo s Waterfront Park with lots of Poulsbo traditions. A high school band ensemble opens the program and then Miss Poulsbo turns on the lights of the tree in the park. Vestre Sund Mannskor sings and later, as they sing, the audience dances around the small tree at the pavilion. A torchlight procession by Sons of Norway Vikings greets Miss Sons of Norway (Lucia) arriving in the long boat. The Vikings escort Lucia to the pavilion. Lucia is presented with a fire starter from the original yule log from Norway. She is escorted to the firepit by the Vikings. After the fire is lit, Brian Davis gives a proclamation on the Jule Fire ceremony. Santa and nisse arrive and then more Christmas songs. Hot dogs, cocoa and cider are available during the event. Dress warmly, the event goes on regardless of the weather! This is a beautiful event and families especially enjoy all the happenings of the day! Julenek & Julkårva A Julenek (Norwegian and Danish) or julkårva (Swedish) is a sheaf of grain hung on a tree or pole as a Christmas treat for the birds. One of the most popular symbols in Scandinavia today, they are sold on street corners in the weeks before Christmas. Few homes are without one. The tradition is actually from olden times when people believed that, by taking care of the animals and spirits during the coldest, darkest days of winter, good luck and a bountiful harvest would follow. Like other winter solstice traditions in rural Scandinavia, it eventually became part of the celebration of Christmas. On farms, the peace of Christmas began before sundown on December 24 th, when the sheaf was tied to a pole and erected in the farmyard. It was thought to be very lucky if the birds flocked to it as it was being hung. Christmas sheaves are available from Poulsbo Lodge #44 Sons of Norway for $ The sheaves will be available at the Christmas bazaar on December 4 th or at any time afterwards in the office. Ladies Club Cedar Chest Raffle Everyone will have opportunities to buy raffle tickets for the lovely handcrafted cedar chest with a heart inlay on the top. It was donated by Donna Breuer and created by her son. The tickets are $3 each or 2 for $5. It will be displayed at the Kaffe Stuas, as well as the Lutefisk dinner and other events. The drawing will be held on December 21 st at noon at the Lodge. The holder of the winning ticket need not be present to win.

6 Annual Lutefisk Dinner From noon to 5 pm on Saturday, November 6 th, the lodge will be serving up lutefisk & lefse, meatballs and gravy, potatoes, carrots, and coleslaw, with krumkake and ice cream for dessert and coffee and water for beverages. The meal is served buffet style by our volunteers and is all you can eat and it is amazing the lutefisk some people can put away. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children under 10. Bring your appetite and come on down! Slate of Officers for 2011 Election of officers will be held in November.
