1 June 22 Mid-Sommer October 2013 Volume 97 Issue No. 10 October 5&6 Adult Heritage Retreat October 25 Troll s Den Halloween Party October 27 Lodge Clean-up Day President s Message September and the end of summer. Well, the weathercasters have declared the end of summer is near. And on the day I am writing this column 09/15, just after the Seahawks/49 rs game, it certainly seemed like it is heading that way. We had heavy rain squalls, hail, thunder and lightning, and it didn t get above 68 degrees to boot. Contrast that to the first two weeks of the month where temps were still in the upper 70 s and low 80 s! I note that to a lot of people including me the end of summer may mean the end of warm temperatures but also the start of other things like football season (Seahawks, Huskies or Cougars anyone?) While it s going to be tough to see this exceptional summer wind down, it s great to see other things start right back up again anew. Your Lodge is changing with the seasons too! Just like spring and summer, I d recommend coming down & celebrating fall with your Lodge. Come on down to our monthly breakfast on 10/06. I also note the Seahawks will be playing the Colts at 10AM that day, so maybe you can take in that too. If you can t make it then, please enjoy the camaraderie of the Trolls Den on any Seahawks Sunday, or for college football on Saturday, or just maybe even a Sounders game or two (I hear one of the bartenders is VERY knowledgeable about soccer, aka football, and can tell you all about the game from start to finish.) And if that s not your cup of tea, we still have our heritage skill classes and our adult & Leikarringen dance groups starting back up for the year. Maybe a nosh at Kaffe Stua would warm you up on a brisk autumn day? Yes, summer is fading fast and fall is coming around the bend, but your Lodge is ready for the new season! Come on downtown and check out our fair town! Lodge Meeting Oct. 8 Three speakers will give a presentation on bringing The Poulsbo Boat back to life: Dave Shields, Jim Shields and Jerry Reitan. This promises to be yet another interesting program. Tusen Takk Tony

3 A Couple of Minor Points Beneficiary Changes: It is very important to keep the beneficiaries current on all of your financial instruments. As an example, let s say you get divorced and forget to change the beneficiary on your 401K, IRA, Annuity or any other financial instrument. Now you remarry and make out a new will naming your current spouse the beneficiary of all your worldly goods. You pass away; guess where all your money goes from these instruments? Even though you have a current will, the beneficiary designation trumps the will. This has happened because someone forgot to change who was to receive the funds. The current spouse gets the bills and the former spouse gets the money. If you have a will, and minor children, who have you designated as the guardian of your children? As time passes, is that guardian still the best one or have your children grown to where they do not need a guardian. Make sure that if you have named a guardian a beneficiary of a financial instrument and the guardian is not needed because of time; then a change is not needed. I believe this is even more important if you have a Special Needs Child. Pick carefully the individual you want to look after your child if you are unable too. One last minor point but a very important one. This one is very easy to overlook. Most of us have pets. Have you made arrangements in your will or trust to have someone take care of your pet if you are not around? Make sure there are funds to cover expenses. My advice is to use the services of an attorney that specializes in pet care. Leona Hemsley could have saved Trouble, her dog trouble if she had received the proper legal advice. For free, no obligation review of your financial plan, please telephone me at (866) or me at tipper13@comcast.net. Marlene Taylor, a Charter Life Underwriter, (CLU) will be able to assist you in all of your estate planning needs. She can be contacted at Ralph M. New Business: The following policy addition to the manual was read by Vice President Judy Lucas: When personal property (other than monies) are offered to the Lodge, the Board of Directors shall first determine whether or not the property has a use at the lodge or that a plan of use can be developed, before acceptance of the gift. It will be published in the Måken and voted on at the November Lodge meeting. Foundation Dir. Phil Swenson noted that the Foundation is having an online auction and items can be seen and bid on at foundation@sofn.org. Financial Benefit Counselor Marlene Taylor reminded members that the Sons was founded on the 3 F's...Fraternal, Foundation and Financial, the last one being what supports everything else. FBC Ralph Naddeo pointed out that wills and living wills should be reviewed periodically to make sure that beneficiary designation is current.
