In most places the main event on this summer solstice occasion is the burning of a large bonfire. In parts of Norway a custom of arranging mock marriages, both between adults and between children, is still kept alive. The wedding was meant to symbolize the blossoming of new life. Such weddings are known to have taken place in the 1800s, but the custom is believed to be older. It is also said that if a girl puts flowers under her pillow that night, she will dream of her future husband.(wikipedia) Be sure to arrive at Poulsbo Waterfront Park on Saturday, June 25 at 4:00 PM to see our version of this traditional celebration. Among other activities, our own Norwegian dancers and singers will entertain. (Who knows, there may even be a mock marriage or two.???? Girls, do you have your flowers ready for your pillow?.) By the way, if you haven't watched or joined our Norwegian dancers, anytime is a great time to get involved. They welcome everyone (even wandering Lodge Presidents) to join in the fun. They will take a break from their dance schedule in the summer, but on Monday evenings through the rest of the year you should slip in and take a look. You will be on your feet with a wonderful teaching partner before you know it. Music, food, crafts, face painting, wreath making, folk dancers, kids games, and more! Bicycle Ride along the Discovery Trail tentatively scheduled for June 4th at 10 a.m. weather permitting. Thank you to all the people who helped from preparation, to work during the luncheon to clean up and putting everything away afterwards. It truly took a village of Sons volunteers to take care of all the activities during Viking Fest. At our June 2nd luncheon meeting. the ladies are asked to bring some memorable toy or special keepsake from their childhood and the story about it to share. A Wednesday, June 8th Chamber of Commerce Luncheon is scheduled to be catered by the Ladies Club. Details will be discussed by those in charge at the June meeting. The District 2 Leadership Conference, which will be held on Saturday, June 18, will be catered with sandwiches, salads and desserts by our Ladies Club. There are three, 2 week long overnight camps each summer. I highly recommend these camps, the children have a great time singing, dancing, playing games, learning crafts, and speaking Norwegian! Children will learn Norwegian songs, make Lefse and Krumkake, dance, play games, and learn cultural skills. Space is limited so get your registration forms in early. Vernon, WA. The Grand Concert will be held on Friday, July 8 at McIntyre Hall. 12 choruses from San Diego to Bellingham will take part. Thank you Mary Gerstel for donating some craft supplies, weaving tools, and a table loom to the lodge. We will be using them at Heritage Camp this summer. If you sponsor a new member to the Lodge you both get a free dinner! June 11. Heritage Museum in Seattle will come to the lodge and conduct a American Voice Oral History Project. They will interview 8 members and will record the experiences of their life stories in Poulsbo. The interview takes about two hours. After the transcription is complete, the narrators will receive a copy of the transcript and a CD or DVD of the interviews. Plan for the Worst-Hope for the Best On May 10 th, we paid homage to those members that past away last year. The service was very personal to me because a few of the members I have had the privilege of working with.
