2 DIRECTORS SADDLE Welcome to October. I am really looking forward to the fall riding season. It s been a long hot summer. We could use a little cooler weather. Soon it will be time to start packing jackets and heavier gloves instead of hydration vests and those cooling towels. I think we are pretty lucky to live here where we can ride year round. July and August can be a little hot. January and February can be a little cold. But with the right gear we are able to ride all year without too much trouble. This month s overnighter is the Beatty BBQ Bash. We couldn t secure the Sour Dough Saloon this year like in the past, when we used their grills. So some members volunteered to haul grills and the fixings to the park. The Beatty Park is just two blocks from the Exchange Club where we are staying. There is a covered pavilion with tables and seats for us to use. If you have not got your room yet, our block is full. But there is still 15 rooms open as of this writing. So book your room and come with us. This is the first overnighter that Claudia and I went on as new members in And we haven t missed one since. This year the members from Black Mountain Chapter will be joining us for the BBQ dinner. This will be a good time to get to know fellow HOG members and maybe learn new ideas. Like rides we haven t been on or just kind of forgot about. We are still trying to fill the boat on the Paddle Boat Dinner Cruise in November. If you are planning on going, go to the address in the HOG Calls or the link in the blast and make your reservations. This is a whole lot of fun. The prime rib we ate last year was delicious. Then to sit out on the upper deck and watch the river go by with the lights from the casinos on the shore was great. At the general membership meeting this month we are going to start the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation turkey dinner drive. There will be bags with a list of items to be filled attached to each bag. Or you can give a twenty dollar store gift card so they can buy a turkey. We have a goal of 35 bags with cards for each. It will run for two months and we will deliver them around the 10th of November. So you will have a little over a month to fill the bag and get it back. There will be more info about this at the meeting. There have been a couple of members that have verbally said they would be interested in one of the positions on the board next year, but as of yet there has been no applications turned in. If you think you would like to be part of the team next year, please turn in an application. Or know someone who would be good at a position, maybe you could talk to them and encourage them to step up. The sooner we get the positions filled the easier the transition will be. Just a reminder that your points will be zeroed out on December 31st. So be sure to use them up before then. I know I am forgetting something, but will think of it before the General Membership meeting. RIDE SAFE AND HAVE FUN! DIRK

3 ROAD CAPTAIN S NEWS Cooler Temperatures Will Be Here Soon For the past couple of months, we have been posting articles about the hot weather that we experience. The good news is that the cooler weather will be on the way. Since we are able to ride all year long here, it is a good reminder that our riding temperatures drop more due to the wind chill factor. We all love a day when the temperature is predicted to be 70 but when we travel at 65mph, that drops the wind chill to 57. Keep that in mind and make sure that you have layered up and are ready for the ride. That means from head to toe. Here are some suggestions: For your upper body-wear that extra layer over your head and around your neck. There are face covers that will keep your chin and throat warm. Wear a thermal shirt, layer your t-shirts or wear an extra jacket. Make an investment in a heated jacket. I ve owned mine for at least 10 years and it has been well worth the money. For your hands, keep a heavier pair of gloves close by. Years ago I found a pair of HD glove liners and they have been a life saver. There are also heated gloves and heated glove liners available at the dealerships. For your lower body, wear thermal pants under your jeans. Also available are jeans that are lined with flannel or fleece. Invest in chaps that not only keep your legs warm, they also protect your legs from rocks and other things that get kicked up from the roadway. Wear a couple pairs of socks or check out some of the heavier brands. Did you know that there are toe warmers that you can place inside your boots to keep your tootsies warm? There is not much worse than having cold hands and toes. Above I mentioned the wind chill factor. A friend of mine posted this chart on Facebook and I would like to share with all of you. Great thing to print out and keep handy all year long. Road Captain Karen Heriford

4 ROAD CAPTAIN S NEWS Cooler Temperatures Will Be Here Soon continued:

5 My First H.O.G. Motorcycle Safety Day Course This was my first time to have been involved in the H.O.G. motorcycle safety day. I have only been riding for one year on my 2015 Road King. Luckily, I have only dropped my bike a few times. Fortunately, I haven t had an accident nor have I hurt anyone. Although I have ridden for one year I am still not use to my bike. I am especially uncomfortable for a few days after I drop my bike. I ride more carefully but really get freaked out when I have to do a tight turn. That only means I need to learn the skill of how to make a tight turn. After I received the H.O.G. schedule for September, I became really excited because the Metro motorcycle police officers will be offering a motorcycle safety day. I knew I would learn new things and know more about my motorcycle afterwards. The safety day finally came. I got up in the morning thinking. it won t be so hard. Anyone can easily find videos on motorcycle police competition and see how fluent they do those tight turns. It s just like dancing together. I want to learn those skills. So I rode over to the Las Vegas Harley-Davidson. The dealership has a big place in the back where a person could practice riding their bike. The class started at 0900 in the morning. We were being taught by some of the most experienced motorcycle polices officers. The first half of the class was about safety tips. Steve pointed out 21 main safety tips that need to be focused on each and every time you ride. Such subjects as, most of the accidents can be avoided and checking the riding condition of your motorcycle, the tires etc. Also checking the road condition and the weather. The last half of the class was the most exciting for me. While riding on your own motorcycle, we would learn five technics. Most of all we would learn how to do tight turns. The knowledge that left the deepest impression was that when the motorcycle is moving don t put your feet down. Maybe I had already learned that skill from the basic riding course. I just forgot. It s a natural reaction we all seem to do, especially when my balance is not that good. The first time I tried it freaked me out. I have done this before, but I still felt like I was going to drop my bike. Now it s the time to face my worst fear, tight turns. When I was in the basic motorcycle course, I passed this technic. Okay I told myself. I can do this. See I know that every police officer that taught this class can do this easily, I can too. So I tried my first time and felt as if I was going too slow and I would drop my bike. So I went faster and had to redo the exercise now thinking about why I couldn t do this technic. It s my own feelings stopping me. Anyone can do this. I can do this too. I just have to trust the instructor and I can have success. So the second time, I tried I made it through the first turn and then the second, but still couldn t make it through the third turn. I was really freaking out because of the tight turns. This was a different feeling that I had never experienced before. My bike was really close to the ground. I had not experience this while riding my bike. It was totally new for me. I was stiff like a board. I got cold sweats and my heart beats like a running wild horse. I told myself that I need to get used to doing these technics. It is normal when you ride a motorcycle. After a few times around for practice, I started to get used to it. I can turn those tight turns. Though sometimes I did hit the cones. Time seemed to have flown by as it s already time for the class to end. I know I learned a lot of new things from this safety course and I improved a lot of my riding technics. It s a brand new feeling for my riding experience and I hope we can get more classes just like this one. Yuan Jou
