1 S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # The Director s Saddle Well here I am several days past my deadline for getting this completed, Mario our editor, is standing on one foot and then the other waiting. What s new? When a person is just sitting in a chair trying to think of something to write about, he sure can think about a lot of strange stuff, and most of it you can t even talk to your best friend about. This month I thought I would share with you some of the rides I have experienced that are truly memorable. J U L Y, My first memorable ride is my very first ride on a Harley. It was a ride down Eastern avenue from the dealership to Tropicana and then to my garage on a brand new (to me) Harley Davidson motorcycle. I was so proud, and still am, to be showing off my new bike to the world. Not to mention I was scared to death to be out there on a public street. I was in heaven and life could not get any better. My first ride with the Chapter was a new member ride to Mount Charleston,. Continued on Page 2 S.N.H.O.G. 2 Continued from page 1 Director s Saddle...continued...with some very memorable moments. I was still new and still had a lot of doubts about my riding skills. We assembled at ANW and I retained NOTHING of my first briefing. As I stood there looking at the other members I can remember thinking man some of these guys are OLD, I bet this is going to be a 25 mile per hour ride down the freeway. Well, as it turned out when the group started down the freeway I had a bit of a problem keeping up, boy was I wrong about how fast we would be riding. It was just a bit above my comfort level. Remember I said I retained NOTHING from my first briefing, well on the way up the Lee Canyon road there was a pile of very fresh road kill. I can still remember everybody in front of me flapping their arms like they were trying to take off. I had no clue what that meant and rode right through that pile of gooey stuff. When we stopped at the wide spot and gathered up to do a meet and greet the rider behind me said it would work out better if I would ride around the stuff in the road, not only for me but for him too. He and his bike had a few splatters. I have taken a lot of very memorable rides since then; here are couple that stand out: My very first trip to Sturgis. What a trip. I was so hyped, excited and eager I didn t sleep for two days. Finely the day came, I couldn t get anything right and was late meeting Jeff and Spike. Not a good way to start a weeklong trip. Everything went well until we got to Colorado. Jeff took us through the State park and over the Continental Divide. That is a beautiful ride. During that part of the ride Spike kept lagging behind further and further. Jeff finally stopped at the summit to use the restroom. Him and I took care of business and were returning to our bikes and Spike came riding up (slowly) and he was as white as a sheet. Thinking he was sick or something the first question was are you alright? Reply: Yessss bbbbbbut I ammmmm afraid of heighttttts. That particular road has a lot of twistys and has some very steep drop offs with some beautiful overlooks. He did overcome his fears enough to get off the mountain, (slowly). The rest of the trip was fantastic, there is just too much to see in and around Sturgis. If I was to tell you about some of the sights I have seen in Sturgis this article would become a book. The day rides in that area are fantastic. My second most memorable ride would be our ride to Tennessee. There is a piece of road that goes from just south of Knoxville to a place called Deals Gap, North Carolina, it s called the Dragon s Tail. This road is about as twisted as they come. I believe there are just over 300 turns in 11 miles. It isn t just the twistys that make the ride so enjoyable. There are some fantastic sights as well. A lot of the trees are covered with ivy like vines and the vegetation is extremely lush. Along with the sights there are some wonderful smells. Thank goodness I was able to take it all in from the seat of a Harley. When you arrive at Deals Gap the first thing you will see is the Tree of Shame. This tree is decorated like a bikers Christmas tree. There are all types of bike parts hanging from every limb, mostly crouch rocket parts. The tradition is, if you crash on the way to Deals Gap you are to hang the destroyed parts in the tree. Hence the Tree of Shame. No matter where you go you can always find things that are unique and interesting. Just look. I guess the point to this rambling is to say there are an uncountable number of rides and sights to see. All it takes is to put a Harley Davidson between your legs and get out there. Ride safe and ride often. If you have a ride or a destination that took your breath away, you can share it with all of us just by sending a little, or big article, to me or any other officer. We will make sure it gets published. We are all waiting to hear from you. The secret of a good article is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible Mart Twain Page 2

3 Williams, AZ Overnighter June 8-10, 2012 by Cinda Giesing It was a great double overnighter to Williams and yep it was my first overnight ride! There were 17 bikes and 20 people and the weather was wonderful throughout our journey. We met at ABC and Tom led us off to Kingman and picked up Historic Route 66 through Peach Springs and Seligman for lunch and into Williams. We arrived early but the Holiday Inn Express was very accommodating and let us have our rooms early (a shout out to Teresa, the hotel manager). Some of us walked up town to see the small group of vendors and the stores while others registered for the AZ State HOG Rally (which some members had winning raffle tickets). The majority of us shared a really nice dinner together at the Holiday Inn and watched the Torrey video while others went to the Singing Pig. Saturday, some members did the HOG Rally while half the group did a day ride. Speedo took us on an amazing and fun-filled ride through Flagstaff, Sedona, and Cottonwood and into Jerome, Prescott Nat l Forest and through Chino Valley. We had some great little loops and twisty roads. After we got back from the ride some of us went to the Grand Canyon Harley Davidson for tees and lunch at the Roadhouse where we grilled our hot dogs. I think everyone went into town for dinner and entertainment. Our group went to the Winchester for a steak & dinner show which featured a singing/storytelling/rope looping cowboy. And yes, Dan said if I d go on the wheel he d spin it, which of course I did. We had a very fun and entertaining evening J. And of course, it didn t end there we joined up with others in town. Dirk and Claudia also celebrated their 33 rd anniversary. Sunday, Tom led us back into Las Vegas for a very nice and safe ride oh yeah.don t get any of us started on that water truck that just wouldn t pull over and let us pass. A big thank you to our road captains that make our rides so safe Tom, Speedo, Dave, Robert, Ducky and Karen!! Page 3

5 Road Captain s Message By Jim Brown Group Riding by Jim Brown (JB) Group Riding is the way we ride! This type of riding allows a large number of members to enjoy the riding experience together. Riding this way, when common sense, respect for others, and safety prevail, is a great riding experience. As to common sense and respect for others... DO NOT mix alcohol and motorcycle riding at anytime. No attitudes while with the group. A diversity of people are motorcyclists. We all share the love of riding. Top-off your gas tank before you begin a ride. Insure you safety check your bike and wear proper gear (D.O.T. helmets etc.). If you aren't comfortable with what others in the group do, drop out and fall to the back. At the pre-ride meeting listen carefully to the lead road captain for the hand signals and other pertinent information. Signals are passed back by every rider so that everyone is informed. Passengers should know and use the signals as well. Riders who choose to ride with a group must do just that, ride with the group. If a navigational mistake is made (e.g. missed turn or exit), continue with the group following the lead road captain until the error can be safely corrected. Changing lanes will be done by following the lead road captain. The lead road captain will not move the group until he gets the word from the lead rear that the lane is clear and safe. You still need to always do your head checks to insure you are safe making the change. As always ride you own ride. Riding in formation is mandatory. Following hand signals to move into different formations or perform certain actions allows the group to travel safely. Riding staggered is the default position with approximately a two second length from the bike directly in front of you. Once you line up you need to stay in your position as much as possible. Riding staggered allows each bike full use of the lane if needed. Should a bike leave the group the bike following directly in line moves up to fill the position. Continued on next page Page 5

6 Continued, Road Captain s Message By Jim Brown A common problem is a speed differential. Slower riders may feel uncomfortable trying to maintain the pace of faster riders. They shouldn't try. Ride your own ride! Yet should you be falling behind consider moving to the back at the next stop. If a vehicle wants to break through the group on a multi-lane road give them space to safely do so. Close formation once the vehicle crosses through the group. Bikers do not own the road. Be considerate of other vehicles. Give them space. Novice and inexperienced riders should pick a place to ride in the group where they think they would feel most comfortable. If you don t like it there you can change positions at the next stop. You may also opt to pull out safely and fall back to the rear of the group where, in most cases we will have a road captain for support. Blocking intersections is risky and very often, an unsafe practice. However, an exception is an escorted ride with trained road captains. Again you still need to do all your head checks to insure you own safety. When at a stop sign or turning left or right, where possible, road captains will try to manage traffic. WE DO NOT MANAGE STOP LIGHTS. Our Hog group meets before and during the ride regularly to pass along information. If you do not understand something ask for clarification. Experienced riders should get to know riders with whom they are riding. Encourage new riders to be cautious and to ride at the group pace but not unsafely or beyond their personal comfort level. Riding in an unsafe manner with a group cannot not be tolerated. The safety of the group is everyone's responsibility. It is a rider s obligation to report noncompliance of any group-riding rule to a road captain a life may depend on it. A group, organization, or club is not responsible for accidents, injuries, thefts, etc. Each individual is responsible for any violation of the law. Riders ride at their own risk. RIDE YOUR OWN RIDE. Group Riding can be a lot of fun if all members are comfortable within the group. If one or more members of the group have any issues then this should be discussed as soon as possible to accommodate or correct the cause of the situation. With any problem that you may have please let one of the road captains know so that with a little tact and mentoring there will be a sufficient understanding of our simple rules. We all can then enjoy the fine sport of Motorcycle Group Riding! Page 6
