1 Southern Nevada Chapter, Inc. #2735 A P R I L From the Director s Saddle. One of our goals this year was to increase the new member participation and it has been suggested that we change the name of the Meet & Greets to New Member Ride so that when the new members read through their newsletters, they will mark this date on their calendar and join us. The idea of the New Member Ride is to assist the new members with learning our riding style. At the beginning of the rides, the Road Captains go over the hand signals and the new members will be introduced to an Ambassador who will ride near them. The rides are relatively short and when we reach our destination, each person introduces themselves, tells what they ride and how long they have been a member of the Chapter. On April 13 th, we will have our next New Member Ride. We will be meeting at the Main Dealership and then riding to the Mountain Crest Park, located at the corner of Ann Road and Durango Road. At that time, we will have lunch delivered to us. We encourage all members to come out and join us. Did I mention that lunch is free? We have ordered our Chapter Rivet, which is scheduled to be placed in the North Terminus at the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. Our Rivet will read Southern Nevada HOG Chapter # 2735 Las Vegas, NV 21 st Anniversary. We have learned that our Charter was established on February 10, 1987 and this year we are celebrating our 21 st Anniversary. We are working on celebrating our 21 st sometime this summer with a party. On Saturday, April 5 th the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is hosting the 12 th Annual Southwest Police Motorcycle Competition event that will be held at the Suncoast Hotel. Our Road Captains have been asked to judge the competition, which is a great honor and recognition of our group. The opening ceremonies will begin on Saturday morning at 7:00 AM. We have a Meet & Eat planned at the event so please come on out, watch the competition and enjoy the day. During April, we will be traveling to the dealership in Zion on the 12 th to help them celebrate the opening of their expansion. Our dealership will also be holding their Anniversary Celebration on April 19 th and we will ride to the Laughlin River Run on the 26 th. Continued on page 2 S.N.H.O.G. 5 From the Road Captains... Hello Hogsters, This month I am going to answer a question I was asked by several of our members. What do all of the codes on the calendar mean? Hopefully this will help not only the newer members, but some of the long time members that weren t quite sure. Let s take a look at the April 2008 calendar. On Saturday, April 12 th, you will see There is a lot of information on the calendar about this ride. 12 Zion H-D 7:00 am ISK CE-A-3-NE Zion H-D This is where the ride is going. 7:00 am This is the time the ride will be leaving. Keep in mind you should arrive at least 15 minutes early, fully fueled, for the pre-ride briefing. ISK ISK is the Departure Location. In this case, we will be leaving from the Iron Skillet Restaurant on I-15 Speedway Exit. CE CE is the Activity Type. This is a Closed Event, open to chapter members and one guest. A This is the Primary Terrain of the road we are traveling. A is for Interstate. On this ride we will be taking I-15 North to the Zion Harley-Davidson Dealership. 3 This is the Distance of the ride round trip. This ride will be from 200 to 300 miles. NE The General Direction of our ride is North-East. All of the information for the Departure Locations, Activity Type, and Run Codes (Primary Terrain, Distance, General Direction) can be found on the chapter website, Click on the Road Captain area and you will find a link to Run Card Member Reference Guide. The information on the calendar can help you decide if you want to ride on a given ride. For an example, if you see the Distance of the ride will be greater than 300 miles and you have plans for 11:00 am; you probably realize that there is no way you can ride on the ride and be back before 11:00 am. Hopefully this will give you a better understanding of all the information that is on the calendar. Chance to Win a 105th Milwaukee Packet! The dealership has offered us at least one 105 th Milwaukee packet that will be raffled off at the April General Membership meeting. The raffle tickets cost $5.00 each with the money going towards our Chapter Rivet that has been ordered. The packet includes a 105 th Laminated Event Ticket, 105 th Event Guide, Signature leather folio and copper band, 105 th Anniversary flag and an American flag, Admission to the two-day festival on the Summerfest Grounds, a one-time admission into Discovery World and entrance to the special H-D exhibit and a commemorative key chain, a total value of $ If you think a ride may be canceled due to weather conditions, check the Message Board in the Members Only area of the chapter s website. Any last minute changes to a ride or event will be posted on the Message Board, under Upcoming Events, two hours prior to the scheduled ride or event time. See you on the next ride Ride Safe and Have Fun Jim Speedo Larson Lead Road Captain PAGE 5

6 Pismo Beach Overnighter... By Matt and Penny Hamm The overnighter this month was to Pismo Beach California. We had 12 bikes ready to go at 7:00 am. All types of Harleys were represented, from Sportsters to the Ultra Classics. Four of the 12 riders were women. Nice to see these riders! As with all rides, we never leave without the pre-ride briefing. During the briefing the route was reviewed, along with the stops along the way and ride safety. This was especially important since we had a couple on their first overnighter. A big welcome to Steve and Marie. It is nice to see new faces on the rides. Additionally, with first time riders with the group, the road captains have an ambassador ride close and be available for questions and concerns that might come up during the ride. With all the business taken care of, it is time for fun. We are off at 7:00 down I 15. The first stop is for a stretch and gas at Baker. This was a 90 minute run of 83 miles. About 20 minutes later, off we go toward Barstow and highway 58 to the coast. Leaving Barstow on 58, we make our next stop at Kramer Junction. This is just-under 2 hours of a 96 mile run. Some two-lane, but mostly four lanes. Again, gas and stretch; not much here at the cross of 58 and 395. After about 30 minutes, we were heading down 58 passing Edward Air Force Base. Highway 58 makes nice curves over the first set of hills and we see to the Tehachapi Valley. With the recent rains, these hills are green; a strange color for us to see. We continue snaking down 58 to California will bypass Bakersfield and take us across the central California San Joaquin valley. The hills on this side are getting greener and are covered with yellow and purple wild flowers. Mixed in are orange poppies. Wow, some spring display. We take 223 to interstate 5, and head north. We stop for lunch at the Buttonwillow exit. This is again, highway 58. This leg took 3 hours and was 122 miles. Lunch and gas took an hour and 20 minutes. A nice break to reflect on the morning and socialize. We continue winding west-ward on 58 through the oil fields on the west side of the valley. During this leg, the group decided to make a stop to stretch and take a group photo. The cows do not seem to mind the HOGS. As we cross through the California Valley, the hills are getting greener. Once highway 58 hits the 101, the hills and valleys we are passing through are as green as I have ever seen. We head North on the 101 and stop at a Harley dealer in Atascadero. The group spent 30 minutes here. Nice shiny new bikes and t-shirts. The final stop for the day is the at the Sea Crest hotel on the Pacific Ocean. Some of the group are staying there, some of the group are at the Best Western Casa Grande. This final run was 124 miles and four-plus twisting hours. The total distance for the day was just over 400 miles and just over 10 hours. Dinner for those at the Best Western was a walk to the restaurant and a great big, family-style meal. Great day! And this was only the first. Sunday started out as a beautiful sunny morning, a great day for a ride. The plan was to have kick stands up at 9:00 am. The group is ready to go at the Sea Crest motel, however one of the group, Jim and Deena, had an electrical problem with the PAGE 6

7 ignition switch on their bike. As a group we make our way down US 101 and got the bike to the Santa Maria Harley dealer. But being a Sunday, there was no mechanic that day. To our luck there was a Kawasaki dealer next door that had a repair team available. With borrowed tools from the Harley dealer, they were able to get the bike up and running. The dealer had some nice clearance racks and coffee and doughnuts, another dent in some charge cards. I think Speedo found his next bike there also. Jim bowed out of the ride that day. I think this was a shopping day for some. The group left from the dealer to tour the Santa Ynez Valley and Solvang area after a two-hour effort. This would be a short 140-mile day. We made the lunch stop in Buellton, at the world-famous Anderson s Pea Soup Restaurant. After lunch, we headed to Lompoc and US 1. Out of Lompoc, US 1 winds past Vandenberg Air Force base. We continue north along US 1 occasionally catching glimpses of the Pacific Ocean. Again, today the hills are an incredible deep green, with many of the fields dotted with wild flowers. The ride ends mid-afternoon, as part of the group heads to the Best Western, while the remainder head for the Sea Crest. The plan for the evening is for a group dinner at F McLintock s. This was a great evening swapping stories, bragging about the bike, telling lies and getting to know each other. This time spent together is what makes these overnighters special. Monday morning; the ride home. This is another great spring day. We will be taking a different route for the first part of the trip home. All are gassed up and ready to roll at 7:00 am. Off we head, south on the US 101 to California follows the Cuyama River into the hills. This is a nice ride to the first stop in the central valley. As we leave the coast and head east, the hills start to loose their green luster; sad to see that. The first stop of the day is in Maricopa for gas and a stretch. This run was just shy of 100 miles, and just over two hours. East out of Maricopa, 166 crosses the central valley to US 99. The group heads north on 99 to the familiar California 223. Once the group is on 223, the ride retraces the Saturday ride out. We stop 130 miles and two hours and 30 minutes later for lunch in Kramer Junction. This is an hour rest. With all tanks full, we continue home down 58 through Barstow to I 15, and we make our last group stop in Baker. This run is 96 miles and 90 minutes. In Baker the group decides that we will be arriving in Las Vegas right at Monday afternoon rush-hour, and to forgo the end-of-ride stop in Jean. As we past Jean, today has been a 375 mile day, and has taken us just over eight hours to this point. We all go our separate ways. This has been another great overnighter. Thanks to JB, Rex, Gary and Speedo, the Road Captains. Pismo Beach area and the ride to and from are very familiar to JB as the Central coast is where he is from. Thanks for the tour. This was another great and safe trip. We can not say enough about the Road Captains. They plan a great set of routes and make sure we are safe during the rides, and make sure safety always comes first. See you on the next overnighter. Matt and Penny Hamm PAGE 7

9 March 2008 SNHOG General Membership Meeting Minutes The meeting opened with Karen asking everyone to greet someone next to him or her. She then discussed the Rivet that has been ordered, and said we are still taking donations. Contact the chapter for details. Karen then talked about the 21 st anniversary of the Southern Nevada Harley Owners Group of Las Vegas, and that we would be planning a celebration this summer for the event. We then moved onto the 105 th packet give away by the dealership, letting those interested know that it would be given away via raffle. Karen let those who attended the meeting; know we are working on new member packets and chapter membership cards. She then discussed the Dealership Loyalty program and went over how to use your card after activating it, checking your points and to look at the summary of the past 10 events. Karen then introduced Tom, the dealer rep. Tom had a safety question that he addressed. What s the most obscure traffic law that has an effect on safety? It has to do with right of way. You cannot pass a vehicle at a crosswalk. You must check first to see if there is a pedestrian. Always safety first! We then moved on to Jim Larson, who also talked about safety. Situational awareness. Be aware of drivers, traffic flow, merging, road conditions and weather conditions. Always use defensive driving skills, or what if? What are you going to do if? Use the SEE method! (Search Evaluate Execute) Assistant Director Larry Kusler welcomed our New Members: June Figueroa, Alois Starustka, Sally Towns, Tony Bianchi, Steve Pierannunzi, and Tim Bowden. Clar Larson then gave the treasurers report. We then welcomed back three ambassadors: Johni Lewis, and Jeannette & Larry Downen. Our secret greeter tonight was Jeannett Downen who received a $10 Harley chip, and Ken Walker was the greetee and received a $15 Harley chip. We have the 2008 catalog for ordering chapter clothing. Ask at the next meeting for details! What is the difference between a Meet-N-Eat and a Meet-N-Greet? A Meet-N-Eat is for all members where we meet at a restaurant and have a meal together, visit and get to know each other off the bikes, and a Meet-N-Greet is having an actual ride, stopping and being introduced to other chapter members, and making sure the new members are comfortable riding in the chapter by going over hand signals, etc. We also share a meal at the end of the ride. This is designed to be a shorter ride so the new members can get to know the riding style of the chapter. Don t forget about the Law Enforcement motorcycle competition, Saturday April 5 th at the Suncoast Casino, 7 AM. We will meet for breakfast in the Buffet. Money for this event goes to Special Olympics.
