This pamphlet published in Philadelphia on February 14, 1776 inspired and spurred a small group of men from the Colonies to gather in Philadelphia a little later that same year to write, sign and declare We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. 2 Continued from page 1 Director s Saddle...continued The Director s Saddle...continued As we celebrate this coming 4 th of July, amidst the Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Steaks, and Fireworks, let us also take the time to remember whence we came from and that Freedom and Independence is neither free nor guaranteed without constant vigilance by the people. Thomas Paine knew this 237 years ago! As such, his essay was properly named Common Sense! Unfortunately, like so many things over time it has become obscured or maybe it would be better stated as a loss of common sense. From June 29 thru July 4 th the Chapter will be running a Fireworks Booth at LVHD. Please support the effort. If you are unable to volunteer time or equipment, stop-by and pick up something for the kids, grandkids, or... your inner child. Besides the typical rides, we have the Nation of Patriots flag escort, (I refer you to Larry Kusler s Article, and this year we will be having a very very special escort on our run to California to drop off the flag), bowling. All the details are in the HOG Calls. The Chapter will also be TREATED to PIZZA prior to our July General Membership meeting compliments of Tom & Judy s nuptials (Congratulations to the newly weds). 3 Road Captains article By James R. Davis ELECTRICAL STORMS You are out in the country and an electrical storm blows in. There is no civilization (read: shelter) for a hundred miles. Should you ride out the storm? If not, what should you do? No doubt you have heard that because your tires are made of rubber, and because rubber is not a good electrical conductor, so long as you keep your feet on the pegs lightning will not hit you since it cannot find a path to ground through you and the bike. WRONG!!! Though rubber is a pretty good insulator at the normal voltage levels we mere humans deal with, it is not very effective against the voltage in a lightning bolt. On the other hand, you may also have heard that if a lightning bolt hits a car the occupants are safe because the car is riding on rubber tires, etc. Actually, this is almost true! So long as the occupants stay away from anything metal they will more than likely survive a lightning hit without any injury whatever. What protects occupants of a cage is not their rubber tires, but the fact that they are enclosed in a metal container. If a lightning bolt hits the surface of the car it spreads around the occupants, NOT THROUGH THEM, and goes to ground. A lightning bolt that hits you or your motorcycle is a different matter entirely. Let me give you an idea of magnitudes we are dealing with here. The master fuse on your bike handles about 30 amps before it blows. An average lightning bolt produces a current of about 20,000 amps. Even 30 amps can easily kill you because it disrupts your heart's electrical system and the heart then simply stops working. Your heart doesn't stand a chance against a lightning bolt. Anyway, if you are out in the open on your bike when lightning flashes begin, and if you can hear the thunder caused by those flashes in less than three seconds from when you see the flash, it's time to stop your bike and get off it. Davis Cont d ELECTRICAL STORMS * Immediately find low ground, but NOT under a single or small group of trees. * * * Squat on the ground with your legs together, head lower than back, but NOT touching the ground. Do NOT lay on the ground. * * * LET YOUR CLOTHES GET WET!!! (In this way, if you are hit the majority of the electricity will follow the moisture of your wet clothes around your body.) * * * Do not get up until thunder following a lightning flash is AT LEAST five seconds after the flash. (Which means the lightning struck more than 1 mile away.) Incidentally, lightning can, and DOES, hit the same place twice - frequently. If there are more than 5 seconds between the lightning flashes and your hearing that thunder, head for shelter. This is the only time trying to ride out from under an electrical storm makes any sense. Best shelter, of course, is a hard covered surface connected to ground with metal. Get under it and wait out the storm. Page 4

8 Hey everyone Judy has a story to share and an announcement to make! Back in 1958, Tom and I were just entering the 7th grade. We became the best of friends and were experiencing that first puppy love. Tom loved hanging out at my house and enjoyed my family, especially my father. We actually hung around with a large group of kids and between school and socials in the neighborhood those were the good old days. Soon we were in high school with separate interests and never embarked on and actual date. Now, let s fast-forward to 2009 and it s our 45th high school class reunion. Although I lived in the Twin Cities all those years, I had never attended one of my class reunions. Tom had lost his wife to brain cancer one year prior and I was just initiating a divorce after 42 years of marriage. Shortly after our class reunion, we started calling and ing one another. Before long, that smooth talking Tom had convinced me to retire and move to Las Vegas so we could thoroughly explore a relationship. I was a bit skeptical because things were moving so fast and I needed to digest what all was happening in my life. From the beginning, his motto has been let s run fast and play hard and believe me our relationship has not fallen short of that motto. Tom was interested in finding someone to grow old with and he makes it known he found a younger chick. Yep, I m 20 days younger than Tom but he often claims his advanced maturity level really shows. He also jokingly says it was the first boob he ever touched and hopes it to be the last. I sure don t remember it that way! In our first two years together, we spent a lot of our time on Tom s ocean rated sailing catamaran. The first year we spent 6 months on the boat in Florida and the Bahamas. During the hurricane season we would sail up to Baltimore and head back to Las Vegas to enjoy the summer Go figure. During our second year together, we enjoyed 9 months mostly in the Caribbean. With a 3-bedroom/3-bath boat we were rarely without company. After selling the boat we moved onto Harley s and believe me, what a difference. We went from exploring the globe at 6 knots to enjoying the USA at 60 MPH! On July 4th, 2013 we are tying the knot in a private sunrise ceremony in our backyard. Yes, we are in the autumn years of life, yet feeling vibrant, brisk and quite frequently, quite frisky. We feel very blessed that our paths crossed after so many years and our goal is to continue to run fast and play hard while we have the stamina and good health to enjoy life. At the next SNHOG meeting on July 9th there will be pizza prior to the start of the meeting and wedding cake after the meeting. Hope to see all of you then! Page 8

9 Harley Davidson Dealer Representative By Steve Ritchey I just finished my first New Member ride with the Chapter as your recently appointed Dealer Representative. This was my first time riding with the Southern Nevada Harley Owners Group and I must say I was very impressed with the Road Captains. They did an amazing job looking out for the safety of the group! I am originally from Pennsylvania and grew up about 90 miles east of Pittsburgh. My Grandfather was a huge influence in life. He bought my first mini-bike at a yard sale and taught me how to ride and shoot a gun by the time I was five years old. One of the main reasons I joined the military was based on the influence my Grandfather had in my life, being a World War II vet himself. I rode dirt bikes until I turned 16; my first street bike was a 1976 Honda CB360T. I rode that bike everywhere until the snow started to fall. In Pennsylvania, that made for a very short riding season. I joined the United States Air Force in The longest two years of my life was the time I spent in Germany without a motorcycle. I transferred to Nellis AFB in September One of the first things I did was buy a bike. Still not a Harley but at least I was riding. In 1991, returning from Saudi Arabia after Desert Storm, I made the decision to leave the military and test for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. In 1992, I joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department where I am currently the Lead Police Motorcycle Instructor. In 1995, I was assigned to the Traffic Bureau where I was able to ride every day and GET PAID the perfect job for me! This is where I met Tom Plehn, your former Dealer Rep. Tom was a person I looked up to as young Motor Cop. He introduced me to motorcycle training early in my career, where I found my passion. I have been involved in motorcycle training now for over 16 years. I have taught over 500 officers from around the country to be Police Motorcycle officers. I was recently appointed to the Governor s Motorcycle Advisory Board and also sit on the Harley Davidson Factory Police Motorcycle Advisory Board. I rode my first Harley Davidson motorcycle at age 13. A friend of the family had a bike and took me for a ride on the back. We were about three miles from the house and he pulled over and said you want to ride it home? That was my first time on a Harley and I was hooked! I still remember my Dad s face as we rode down the driveway with Jim as the passenger. I got my first Police Harley in Since then, I have had the privilege of riding the 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010 police models. My first personal Harley was a 2000 Electra Glide Classic that I bought in That bike has a lot of first time memories, as all of us who ride can relate to. It was the first bike that I put my daughter Miranda on the back of at age four. Two of my life-long friends and I rode to Sturgis in 2005 for the first time. The most important is, I met the LOVE OF MY LIFE while on that bike in The day we met we took a ride out to the scenic over look at Red Rock where we stopped and talked for hours. A few years later we rode out to that same scenic over look where I proposed to her and had the ring hidden in the first aid kit. Lynn loves to ride and travel on the bike. We plan at least a few trips every year, with a big 3000-mile ride in the summer, a holiday ride in December and as many weekend trips as possible in between. We are currently riding a 2012 Ultra Limited. That green 2000 Electra Glide was a good bike, but it was time to upgrade many things in my life!!! In closing, I want to be sure I express how truly honored I feel to be part of the Southern Nevada Harley Owners Group. Over the years, I ve worked on several occasions with HOG chapter members and have been continually impressed with your passion and commitment, not only for riding but also for increasing motorcycle safety and awareness in our community. 17 Here are More HOG Benefits for you HOG Member Benefit Tom Westdorp How can I get more value from my HOG membership? A question many of us ask ourselves. Sure, there are the birthday gift certificates from our dealerships, and the monthly ticket drawings they fund. There s the discount on AT&T wireless plans from the national, and the basic roadside assistance coverage (by the way if you haven t upgraded that to Deluxe give it some serious thought right now!) But if you can t get to the HD Museum or Miller Park how else can you get more value? Did you know that the national HOG will reimburse up to $50 for the successful completion of an accredited MSF rider training course? Not just the Rider s Edge classes, any accredited MSF rider training course. Now I know that each of you is an experienced rider, so the beginner course is probably not the right one for most of you, but let s think about the Skilled Rider course. A course taken on your own motorcycle, to sharpen your skills and help make you a safer rider. I hope everyone reading this article has his or her driver s license endorsed for motorcycle operation. Although those on HD trikes don t require it in Nevada, the rest of us certainly do. If there are any scofflaws reading this, please be aware the Skilled Rider course also can be used to earn your M endorsement. When I took the course half the students were taking it in a big hurry after getting a ticket. Wouldn t it be a good idea to get it handled on your schedule rather than the court s docket? Assuming we re all legal at this point, why take a Skilled Rider course? After all many of you have been riding motorcycles for years, even decades. What can you learn at this point? There s the whole old dog, new trick thing going on, too. Right? You put on lots of miles riding with the chapter, riding with other friends, riding alone just to enjoy the ride. Thousands, maybe tens of thousands of miles. You re not the owner of some garage bound dust magnet, you re riders. Skilled and experienced riders. Assume for a moment the course was required, just for the sake of argument. Would you be more worried that you re wasting money or that you won t pass? If you answered the former, ask yourself if you re really that good or maybe just a little cocky. If you re worried about passing, schedule the class now. You re smart enough to know you need it. We can all sharpen our skills, and having an instructor take you through a planned MSF curriculum addressing safe motorcycle riding will benefit any rider. Build your skills, correct bad habits and increase your confidence. Page 17

HOG and probably your insurance company think the rider training courses are worthy of them putting up cash to subsidize them, by reimbursing you for passing them. Your part seems pretty easy! Take the course, what could be the problem? All the Road Captains passed the Skilled Rider course, and I sure would like to see the patch or pin signifying you passed the course on every vest in the chapter. How many times have you silently questioned the riding ability of someone else? How many times do you think someone else has silently questioned your riding ability? Are you really so good the class would be a waste of time and money, or will you be just a little worried about passing? How many of you are already wondering, how much do I get reimbursed if I don t pass? Take the course; you know it s the right thing to do! Page 18

26 Nation of Patriots by Larry Kusler How appropriate it is that during the month the Nation of Patriots Flag will come to us we celebrate the birth of our Nation and all of the freedoms we have. It is certainly time for us to remember all of the sacrifices made by the men and women in our military over the years that allow us to live in this great country and also to remember that freedom isn t free. I will never take for granted how blessed I am and how thankful I am. You all know that SNHOG supported a golf tournament as a fundraiser for the Nation of Patriots. I am extremely happy to report that the tournament was a huge success. The tournament had a profit of $18,500 that will be sent to the Nation of Patriots as part of the funds raised from Las Vegas. The tournament couldn t have happened without Larry Preston and his business associates. But the real thanks need to be given to Dave Bondurant. His efforts to put everything together directly resulted in the tournament not only being a huge success, but it was so enjoyable many of the participants have asked to be allowed to participate again next year. I have already started a list for next year s participants. If you would like to be involved in any way let me know and I will get you added to the list. The tournament will most definitely sell out next year. Dave, you did a great job and the Nation of Patriots wants to make sure you know how thankful they are. Also on the list of people to thank are the SNHOG volunteers. Gretchen Preston rode around the course selling mulligans, Dave Jones worked all day in the clubhouse to make sure everything was set up for the banquet when play was done, Karen and Rod Heriford, Robert and Betty Baldwin worked prior to the start of the tournament stuffing the gift bags for each of the players, Paul and Wendy Smith spent the day on the course at the hole in one motorcycle giveaway as witnesses (unfortunately no one got a hole in one), Beverly Kusler was all over the course taking pictures, Jay and Sharon Gordon took team photos, and Sandi Edge and Kendria Adams worked one of the games on the par-5 hole. We also had a non-member who believes so strongly in the charity that he worked all day on the course at the Par-3 game. His name is JJ Johnson and has also volunteered to do it again next year. The end result was we will be able to give away a tremendous amount of money to wounded veterans here in Las Vegas this fall. My sincere thanks go out to all of you. The next events are the flag escorts. On Monday July 22nd we will leave LVHD at 0730 and ride to Railroad Pass to meet the group from Mother Road bringing us the Flag. After they arrive we will leave there and ride to RRHD where there will be a ceremony turning the Flag over to this year s SNHOG flag bearer, Glen Oelrich. As of this writing Paul Smith is still working with Nellis AFB on a ceremony to honor the Flag while we have it on that Monday. Stay tuned for more information on that. On Tuesday July 23rd we will leave the Silverton Hotel at 0500 heading for Antelope Valley Harley to turn the Flag over to them. This will be a round trip ride of about 520 miles. Hopefully those of you that are planning to participate in this ride are working on getting sponsors for the ride. I have spoken to people asking them to sponsor me for as little as a penny a mile. I have also talked to people who will be contributing a little more. For those of you that can t make the ride on July 23rd you can still participate, sponsor one of those that will be going. Any donation will be gratefully received. It will all go into a fund that we will be giving out locally this fall. For both of these rides we will have a police escort. Steve Ritchey was able to get permission to not only provide us with escorts for the local rides but we will be escorted all the way to Palmdale California and back. I have ridden in dozens of police escorted rides but this will be the only one I have ever heard of that is over 500 miles long. If you want to have an opportunity to feel like Moses parting the Red Sea you need to join us on the ride to Palmdale on July 23rd. For that ride we will be asking for a voluntary donation of $5. Once again all of the funds raised will be given away this fall. I can t begin to tell you how grateful and proud I am of the SNHOGs for getting behind this and fully supporting all of the various efforts. I have spoken with Bill Sherer (the founder of the Nation of Patriots) and he is completely speechless. I have also told him that we aren t done yet; we are still in fund raising mode.
