Hello Hogsters, as I write this I m sitting in my hotel room in San Diego, after just spending the day with fellow S.N. H.O.G members riding a trolley through the wonderful streets of this great town. Our first stop was by far worth the whole trip, a tour of the U.S.S. Midway that was commissioned a week after World War II in After spending a few hours on that ship, it brought back many great memories for Jim Larson and myself, who spent many days floating aboard 2006 SNHOG Officers the battleship gray weapons of war. For all the Veterans who served in the Navy, who did not get a chance to do the overnighter, I recommend that you put this on your to do list. Then it was onto Seaport Village for shopping and food. The rest of the day was just as fun, as we visited many points of interest in San Diego. While about twenty of us were on the trolley, others took their Harleys on a ride to Huntington Beach and up and down the coast. So after the day was done, I realized it s all about the Harley and the Trolley, at least for that day and that is what weekend overnighters are all about, having fun no matter what it (Continued on page 2) DIRECTOR JOHNNY THOMPSON DIRECTOR@SNHOGLV.COM ASSISTANT DIRECTORS JIM LARSON ASSTDIRECTORJIM@SNHOGLV.COM KEVIN PACHTINGER ASSTDIRECTORKEVIN@SNHOGLV.COM SECRETARY LYNNETTE ABAD SECRETARY@SNHOGLV.COM TREASURER PAT CRITTENDEN TREASURER@SNHOGLV.COM ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT KAREN HERIFORD ADMINASSISTANT@SNHOGLV.COM LEAD ROAD CAPTAIN MARK HASTIE LEADROADCAPTAIN@SNHOGLV.COM NEWSLETTER EDITOR ARNNY ABAD EDITOR@SNHOGLV.COM ACTIVITIES OFFICER MARK & LENE MOGAVERO ACTIVITIESOFFICER@SNHOGLV.COM HISTORIAN MARILYN HASTIE HISTORIAN@SNHOGLV.COM PHOTOGRAPHERS KENN WYNN KRWYNN@COX.NET DONNA YADA-SCRENCI WEBMASTER LARRY LEWIS WEBMASTER@SNHOGLV.COM SPONSORING DEALER REP TOM PLEHN HOGREP@LVHD.COM

2 PAGE 2 Editor s Note Last month s newsletter was a little short, but we sure are making up for it on this one. All articles on this one are cool. The safety riding tips from Tom Plehn have quickly become one of my personal favorites. The director saddle article this month is the longest I have ever gotten from Johnny. As always, a very important read. And in that line of thought, I will say this the points are driving me nuts! If it was up to me, there wouldn t be any points. Just ride your bike with the chapter because you enjoy the company and like riding. Thank God the Dealership is in charge of that and not me. But the point is this before you miss the point of the points, it is riding with the Chapter that rewards you with points. Participating should not be a side effect of the points. And last, congrats to Lori Brown on that awesome Vrod SE. It s always good to see people with good taste in motorcycles. Lorie, remember to go easy on the throttle so Jim can keep up. Cheers, Arnny We only hope that you are riding for the company and fun of the ride, not just to get points. Director s Saddle...cont. (Continued from page 1) might be. We had a great ride down there, leaving on Saturday right after 7:00 a.m. and stopping for lunch in Temecula, CA. Once we got to the hotel, the Primary Officers held the Hospitality Room in my room. After a get together, we were off to dinner in Old Town, just a short walk from our hotel (Thanks to Mark and Lene Mogavero for a great hotel choice). For the ride home, we left at 8:00 a.m. and stopped at Peggy Sue s Diner for lunch, just outside of Barstow, then home to finish off a great weekend. Now onto some business. From now on, we will sign in before every ride and scan our cards at the last stop. On overnighters, we will scan at one of the last gas stops. To me it is not fair for members who ride the whole ride to get the same points as those who only ride a half of the ride, so we will change that. Speaking of points, the dealership, with the exception of our two General Membership meetings, now has all the points updated, so you can stop by and check to see how many points you have. I hope you find some upcoming rides that interest you, like our ride to Death Valley on March 5th or the Oatman, AZ Ghost Town ride on March 11th. We also have the second dealership poker event, the 4-Leaf Clover Run and we will need volun- (Continued on page 9)

4 PAGE 4 Yuma Overnighter. As a newly ordained Road Captain, I d like to recap our latest overnight road trip. For people that don t know me, let me tell you a little about myself first. I ve been a chapter member since late 2003, became an ambassador for the year 2005 and a Road Captain in I m originally from Massachusetts and have been in Vegas for about 15 years. I ve worked in the dental business for over 30 years and I m presently a private technician in a dental practice in town. Recapping the overnight trip to Yuma, 7am at ABC was the start time and place. We had all the regulars that go on the overnighters as well as some new faces for our road adventure. The morning started as a brisk one, but warmed as we headed south. By the first gas stop, some of our members were stripping off clothes. The group looked awesome! 50 bikes riding in formation is a sight to behold. Todd was chosen to lead, and what a great job he did. The ride was smooth, with minimal rubber band effect and no break downs. Our lunch stop was Lake Havasu and after a bit of socializing we were back on our steel horses heading south again. Gassing up again in Quartzite the Road Captains came up with a nickname for me, because Jim and Tim sound similar on the CB radio. Because of my dental connection they chose Fang. I guess this works for me. After leaving Quartzite and riding a while through the Arizona Desert, we had our own personal military fly by. A military jet must have seen 50 Harleys riding through the desert and decided he would show us who could make more noise. I m not sure who won. After managing to get through a good number of traffic lights and keeping the group together, we stopped at the new Harley- Davidson dealership in Yuma. They were excited to see all of us roll in as a group. And they really appreciated that we took the time out of our trip to spend some time and money in their store. From there it was a short trip to the hotel. All checked in, part of the group gathered for a short trip over into Mexico. The rest of us just wanted to enjoy the camaraderie at the hospitality room (Rod and Karen Heriford s). After dinner and more socializing, everyone hit the sack early for we had a long ride back ahead. 8:00 am Nevada time we rolled out of Yuma. A great ride back with lunch in Laughlin. As we passed through Quartzite and Parker heads turned as 50 Harley s roared in formation. We do have a pretty awesome group of riders. And this ride definitely put our riders through a test; we had twisties, hills, highway and city driving. After lunch and fueling up, we remounted and headed home. It was an enjoyable ride and a weekend, I didn t want to see it end. If you ve never been on one of our overnighters you should really think about coming to one soon. The riding is great and the camaraderie is beyond belief. I hope to see more new faces on the next trip. In closing I like to thank the Road Captains for taking me under their wing, showing me the ropes and allowing me to scout my first ride. I hope I did the job up to standard and I know the Road Captains did their usual excellent job getting the group down the road safely and enjoyably. The group rode the best ride since I ve been a member. I am looking forward to seeing more great rides and great people. So come on out and ride with us! Jim Collupy

5 PAGE 5 A Friendly Recommendation... Hey fellow HOGsters, if you re interested in attending any state HOG rallies, a really great one is the Arizona State Rally. June 15th to 17th in Williams, Arizona. Nice, cool and beautiful. If you want to go, you must make reservations now. Most of the motels and hotels are booked full already. To register go to Price is $35 for National HOG members and $30 for 1 guest. For a list of hotels that are not full, you can call me at Last year I won the Grand Prize. A one of a kind State HOG Knife, it s a very sharp knife (pun intended Ha Ha). We had a great time, it s worth the trip. Jim and Gracie Albano Meet and Greet Experience. I was asked by Johnny to write a short article on what I thought of my first group ride; and although the scenery was beautiful, my first thought is how comfortable I was. I really enjoyed myself riding with 85 other bikes. I was so impressed by the skill and teamwork of the Road Captains, they were quick and well organized. I am somewhat of a shy person, so when members came up to me and introduced themselves so quickly and in such a positive manner, it really warmed my heart. It was such a nice group of people. Overall, I truly enjoyed myself and was more than comfortable throughout the entire ride. Michele Scott

7 From the Road Captains... Welcome to the Greatest HOG Chapter. Southern Nevada HOG Las Vegas. What a great year we have had so far!! By the time this newsletter reaches you we will have completed another month and our second overnighter of the year. Our first overnighter was to Yuma, Arizona and we had a great time. We had 49 bikes go on that overnighter. We were buzzed by a Navy Prowler Jet and amazed by the massive motor home gathering at Quartzite, Arizona; we stopped at the new home for Yuma Harley-Davidson and then went to our hotel to check in. Wally Gator Smith led a small group to Mexico and another group hung out in the parking lot by the chase truck socializing. Ken Wynn walked over to the Outback Restaurant and came back to the gathering with 4 reservation pagers! What a great job Ken and thanks. The Outback was able to get 4 tables of 8 set up for us around the same time and we had a fun evening. We have also had one of our Meet and Greet rides and what a turnout we had to welcome our new and newer members, we had 83 bikes and over 100 members. What a way to be welcomed to this great chapter. I hope all the members enjoyed the ride, the day and lunch back at the dealership. For February we will also have had our first 2 night overnighter to San Diego with side trips scheduled for the San Diego area. Kevin Pachtinger made maps for a couple of rides and will be leading a group on one of those. I hope all had a great time in Southern California. This is a Chapter favorite because of all of the ride choices available to us and the weather at this time of the year. We also had a meet and eat gathering at Red Robin and a great time was had by all. For March we have some great days planned. We are going to Death Valley and our favorite day ride location the next weekend to Oatman; just don t park next to Johnny there! At the end of the month, this years first Eat-A-Thon, where we will ride to 3 of our members homes for appetizers, main course and desserts. This is always a great way to spend the day with our chapter. Remember that this year s weather has been uncharacteristically warm; the weather can change on us while we are riding! Be prepared, have warm clothes available, have rain gear available, watch the news, newspaper and weather channel and try to dress appropriately for the day and again prepare for the unexpected, it will make the ride more enjoyable for you. As always ride safe and Have fun. Mark PAGE 7 In March we ll be going to Oatman; don t park next to Johnny!

Then our second Meet and Eat will be at Johnny Rockets and then onto our first Eat-A- Thon, as we visit the homes of three members for appetizers, main course and then desserts. Regardless of your schedule, I hope you will get involved with this Chapter in some manner. I know we have a point system now and I will tell you my view on them. They are good and they are bad. We have members riding with us now that we have not seen for awhile and that is good. We only hope that you are riding for the company and fun of the ride, not just to get points. This Chapter was started for two simple reasons, riding that Harley- Davidson you love and meeting new people to call friends, period. Since the start of the points system, in- stead of first greeting a member with a handshake or a hug, we have members who are asking when and where we are going to swipe their cards for points. To me, you are missing the point for the sake of points and that is bad. Let s ride to have fun and when you do, you will be rewarded with the points. In my mind, I don t care if the dealership offered us anything or not. I joined this Chapter to meet new people and ride my motorcycle. I have made many great friends that I would never have had the chance to if not for this Chapter and I asked for nothing in return. The Dealership is nice enough to take care of us with this new benefit, but I hope you understand that is not what we are about. Ride because you LOVE IT. It has changed my life; let it make your life better. Remember, one thing points can t buy is FRIEND- SHIP, that has to be earned. Make sure you get a chance to thank Leslie Lambeth for stepping into her new role from Ambassador to Membership Officer and thank Donna Yada-Screnci for becoming a Photographer for the Chapter. Also, your Birthday points from March through December will be handled by the Dealership. I hope to see you on the road and as always, RIDE SAFE and HAVE FUN...MOUNT UP, LET'S RIDE Johnny

10 PAGE 10 The Invisible Motorcyclist. Hello HOG members! At the January meeting I related a story about a conversation I had with one of the motor cops I had worked with at Metro. This lead to me relating a tip for safer riding on the on and off ramps of the Las Vegas Valley. I have been asked by several members to continue this in at future meetings. I will also attempt to write these tips down for The Silver Eagle News. This month I would like to discuss the concept of the Invisible motorcyclist. Adopting this strategy in ridding is, I believe, the most important key to riding survival. Think back to the movie The Invisible Man and place yourself in his shoes, if you can find him! You have to walk around in a building crowded with other people. Everyone is walking about at a quick pace. The only problem is that they can t see you. This places the burden of collision avoidance on you because you can see them. If you transfer this to your riding (or driving for that matter) you will become safer in your motorcycle operation. Most drivers involved in an accident with a motorcycle claims I didn t see it. I am sure in some cases this is true, but I don t believe that it is the majority of the time. The truth is some drivers don t care about motorcycles. A good many others don t understand how motorcycles maneuver and their limitations on braking for example. This should not be news to any of us. That is why this strategy is so easy to use; it only requires this thought on your part If they can t see me I must be responsible for avoiding them. Let s try a few examples. You are riding on a road and observe a car traveling at a high speed approaching on the right at an upcoming intersection. It brakes to a stop, a little late in your opinion, at its stop sign. You know that you are invisible. What do you do? A. Hold a steady speed look straight ahead and not give it another thought. B. Roll off the throttle thereby, reducing your speed and begin to think about the fact you may have to take some action to avoid an accident. I know that all of you said answer B and you would be correct. I know, however, that we ve all watched other motorcyclist pick answer A. Example two: You are riding on a twolane roadway and are slowly overtaking a vehicle in the right lane. As it draws near you: A. Continue to slowly pass because your cruise control is set at sixty. B. Use a little extra power and complete the pass without riding for too long in the vehicle s blind spot. We all picked B. But here again we all have seen people ride for what seems like miles in other vehicles blind spots. Using this strategy does not mean riding around in a state of fear. Quite the opposite, by taking the responsibility of avoidance upon yourself, it transfers the power to you. Think of it this way, would you prefer to be surprised that someone violated your right of way or have been forewarned that they were going to violate your right of way and been ready. Which causes the most fear? Think back to both questions and the A answers. If the first, vehicle pull out or the second changed lanes the accident would have been by law their fault. Now ask yourself who would have really paid. We live in the land of the free because of the brave. Some RIGHTS are worth dieing for. The RIGHT of way is not one of them! Ride safe! See you soon! Tom Plehn

11 February Meeting Minutes. P Treasurer s Report February 22, 2006 Beginning Balance: $10, Income: $3, Expenses: $ Ending Balance: $12, Johnny opened up the meeting by introducing two new officers to our chapter. First being Leslie Lambeth as our new Membership Officer and Donna Yada-Screnci as our new photographer. Johnny then proceeded to talk about the new points system and how some members have been caught trying to cheat the system. Therefore from now on, if anyone is caught trying to cheat the point system, the first time they will loose all of their points for that year. The second time they will be asked to surrender their membership to our chapter. Tom Phlen, our dealer rep, was then introduced. Since being a retired Metro Motor Officer, he is constantly asked for good riding tips. Therefore, his tip of the month is the Invisible Man Concept. (See page 11) Tom also spoke about how the dealership is going to reward someone from the top 25 highest point holder two sets of two tickets to NASCAR in the dealership s VIP box. One set will be for Saturday and one set for Sunday. There will be drawing between the top 25 highest point holders which will determine the two winners. Tom then spoke about the upcoming Harley-Davidson sponsored Saints and Sinners run which will start in Salt Lake City and end in Las Vegas. The events run from June 19th to the 23rd. Mark Duke who is the dealerships sales manager was then introduced. Mark wanted to comment on how impressed he was with his first ride with the group. He didn t anticipate such an organized ride with so many bikes. Mark also spoke about how the dealership encourages anyone that has any issues or problems regarding the dealership to please speak to him or Jeff Lewis so that they can try to resolve it appropriately. Mark Hastie, our Lead Road Captain spoke about how the Road Captains will handle the chase vehicles for this year and that there will only be one on each ride. Lene and Mark Mogavero then spoke about our upcoming events. If you have any questions about future events, please call Lene and Mark for information. Lynnette Abad, our Secretary, spoke about the time it is taking to receive the new Biker Rewards cards. It has been taking them weeks, so please be patient everyone. If you signed up more then 3 weeks ago, please her at secretary@snhoglv.com. She will make sure to forward your s to them. As always, this is a nonalcoholic Chapter. Therefore, drinking will not be tolerated before or during a Chapter ride. If someone chooses to drink, they will not be allowed to ride with the group for the remainder of that function.
