DIRECTOR S SADDLE Here we are half way through the year, this is the perfect riding time so get out and enjoy! Our weather is going to change and it will get hot. Plan for the hot weather by making sure you carry water and sun screen. We have a ton of great rides coming up in the next few months. Call and get your overnighters booked now before our rate goes back to seasonal rates. Overnighters are a good time to hang out with your chapter family and make new friends, also to see some great countryside. Be sure to track what is going on through our chapter website; you will find all the rides and chapter events that are coming up. Our Secretary does an excellent job blasting out the week s events to keep everyone informed, if you are not getting the blast let us know so we can ensure your address is correct. Our Editor also does a great job putting together the newsletter each month for your enjoyment. She is always looking for members to submit an article, it could be a ride you took or how you came to riding a Harley Davidson. As always our officers, Road Captains and Ambassadors do an outstanding job, and are here to serve you the Chapter! If you have questions or concerns you are welcome to contact any officer. Be Safe, Ride Safe! Director Roddy Suggestion Box Don t forget to bring all your wonderful suggestions and ideas to our next membership meeting which just happens to be our yearly picnic. Here is your chance to be heard! The suggestion box will be on a table at the park to collect all those wonderful ideas you have only sat around talking about. We will open the box at the All Officers meeting. If you won t be at the Picnic send your ideas to our address: Silver Eagle News Attn: Editor 5191 S. Las Vegas Blvd Las Vegas, NV I will place them in the box for you. I do accept s. beverly@snhoglv.com Page 2

ROAD CAPTAIN S NEWS June 2017! Yes, I said June!! I can t believe that 2017 is almost at the half way mark. I hope you are riding safe and having fun! It seems that the cold riding season was just upon us and now the Las Vegas hot season is creeping up on us fast. I would like to remind everyone of how we all need to be ready for all temperatures. I know sometimes we sound like a broken record, preaching about being prepared for all types of weather. I remember being ill prepared for a ride when there was a big drop in temperature from the mid-60s down to the low-30 s. Since that incident, I always carry extra layers and my heated gear. I was also caught in a heavy rain storm once without rain gear. Yes, only once. These were lessons learned. I have been on some rides where there were some riders ill-prepared for the change in weather and they paid the price. We only have two seasons here in Las Vegas, hot and dry and icy cold. Even so, we still need to keep our motorcycles packed for all 4 seasons. Water on all rides in all temperatures is a must. You can dehydrate in any type of weather. Remember to check the weather and road conditions of the route prior to starting a ride. I also recommend that you pack your ride with a wide variety of clothing for all types of weather. No matter what time of the year it is: winter, spring, summer, or fall, you should always be ready for all temperatures and weather conditions. SOME of us don t wipe down or clean our bikes as often as we should. I am guilty of this from time to time. The simple action of wiping down our bike may reveal a problem that we may have otherwise missed; a loose bolt, a broken wire, or even more serious-a crack in a vital section of the bike. I know that some of us leave the dirt on the bike as a testament of the miles we ride. The simple action of wiping the dust from our bikes may save us headaches down the road. Before every ride remember to TCLOCK your motorcycle. We all remember that from our basic rider safety course, right? Here is a refresher on TCLOCK. Check the following on your motorcycle before EVERY ride: T - Tires tread depth, pressure and wear. C - Controls levers, cables, throttle, brake controls front and rear. L - Lights brake lights, headlights, road lights, and turn signals. O - Oil engine oil and fuel level. C - Chassis check suspension, inspect drive belt, check front and rear shocks. K - Kickstand check for cracks, check spring tension, check center stand if applicable. The above list are the basics and not all inclusive. Please check your motorcycle prior to EVERY ride. When we prepare our motorcycles for a chapter ride, remember to make sure the fuel tank is full and your body is also refueled prior to the ride. Making sure your body is fueled before a ride is essential to staying alert and sharp on the ride. Hydration is also a major part of preparing your body for a ride. Even if we are doing a breakfast ride or a lunch ride, it would be a good idea to eat a little something prior to the ride. Do you remember the old commercial that said, Wheaties Breakfast of Champions? To be a champion you need to fuel your body prior to a work out or competition or in our case, before we ride. Also remember to get a good night s sleep before each ride. This will also help keep you sharp on the ride. As always, ride your own ride and keep the rubber side down. RIDE SAFE & HAVE FUN Roger Ellison Page 3

DID YOU EVER WONDER. Did you ever wonder how an Activities officers like Claudia, picked the hotels and blocked the rooms that we stay in for our overnighters. It is my hope in sharing this information with each and everyone of you that maybe more people will understand what takes place when an Activities officer blocks a set of rooms for us. Hopefully the information you receive here will also help you understand what she does to block those rooms and maybe to encourage you to COME RIDE WITH US on the next overnighter. When the overnighter hotels are booked it is with the members in mind. It is IMPARATIVE to make sure you have a decent place to shower, change, and rest after a fun day of riding and socializing with friends. It is also to be our central meeting place as to arrive at and to depart from. With all this in mind, certain criteria must be met. It is never the intent to book the most expensive place in town nor the cheapest. The Activities officers like Claudia have had to do a lot to book these rooms for all of us. I can only tell you what I have had to do while assisting her this year in setting up a block of rooms for Winslow AZ. First, I had to locate some of the names of the hotels in the area. I checked for some comforts of home like types of beds, refrigerators, microwave, blow driers, as well as a good parking area. All this while scoping out prices. I read the customer reviews and let me tell you, those can be entertaining at times. I looked for the mid-priced hotels, made my first call but they could not accommodate us, so I continued up the ladder of hotels until I found one that could accommodate most of our requests. I then negotiated the price of the room down as low as I could get them to go and we then did a contract for the block of rooms. Later, I found myself asking which way should I have gone with this deal. The budget hotel Rodeway Inn is $50.00 or the mid-rate hotel, Best Western which because of circumstances is on the higher end at $ The decision was made by asking myself, If this was for my friends and family, (which you are) where would you want them to stay? The decision was easy then, Best Western. Now you say you live on a tight budget and /or a fixed income like I do and you just can t afford the cost of Best Western. Don t let that stop you from riding with us. Shop around for that budget hotel, book it, and come ride with us. In booking a different hotel, that does come with some responsibilities on your part. We all must arrive at the host hotel and we all leave from there the next morning. You should make sure someone at the host hotel has your contact number so you can be informed of activities or changes that may occur. You need to make sure you know leave times for in the morning and arrive 15 minutes prior for briefing. Basically speaking, we just need to realize that our Activities officer works very hard to get the best deal for all of us. But if it still does not fit your budget, take on that responsibility and seek out that budget hotel, book it and COME RIDE WITH US. Be safe, have fun. Beverly Muise-Madrid Editor SNHOG Page 12

Hand Signals Taken from the SNHOG BY-LAWS 12. Hand Signals a. At all times, standard hand signals will be used for changing the group formation, all turns, lane changes, slowing and stopping. Turn signal lights will also be used at all times in conjunction with the designated hand signals. b. All hand signals will be relayed to the rear of the group to allow all riders to take appropriate precautionary measures, and be aware of the changes in speed and travel direction. c. The Group Leader will move as an individual to assume whatever maneuver or position that is required. d. The group will follow the Group Leader s direction as individuals, in a follow the leader approach, signaling and following the Group Leader when appropriate and safe. e. The following adopted hand signals are the standard signals to be used in group riding. Other hand signals may be developed and added as required. All riders and passengers are responsible for knowing the proper hand signals and passing them back to the riders behind them. Information taken from the chapter bylaws pages Page 14

FYI Taken from the SNHOG BY-LAWS 13. Touring Tips a. When approaching a tight curve, the rider on the outside of the curve should give room to the rider in the inside, should the curve be too tight to negotiate at the travel speed, to avoid excessive crowding and ensure safety of all riders. b. Always know the stopping power of your motorcycle. Take your motorcycle to a vacant parking lot and practice, practice, practice. c. ALWAYS keep the group tight without crowding each other to avoid allowing four wheel vehicles into the group. If the rider in front of you does not close up a gap, signal, then when safe, pass the rider and take position in front of them and close up the gap. d. Touring speeds will normally be at the posted speed limit, unless the posted limit is 75 MPH. On highways where the posted limit is 75 MPH, a touring speed of MPH will be maintained. e. NEVER ride in someone s blind spot. f. Contrary to what rumors say, you are NOT safe from lightning while riding your motorcycle. Find proper shelter as soon as possible if lightning is present. g. Always carry the Chapter Reference Card on your motorcycle and observe and maintain the Ten commandments of group riding. h. Come prepared to all Chapter activities with the Ride Safe and Have Fun attitude. 14. Safety Equipment a. All riders are responsible for ensuring that they have a well maintained motorcycle on rides. Riders should do a pre-ride check of all brake and turn signal lights, check all fluids and tires before leaving home. b. All group riders are encouraged to bring a well stocked tool kit to all Chapter rides. c. All group riders are encouraged to have a well maintained First Aid Kit on all Chapter rides. d. The Lead Road Captain or Group Leader will be responsible for bringing the following items on all Chapter rides: 1. Fully stocked First Aid Kit 2. Route maps 3. Run information 4. All proper release forms 5. Chapter reference cards 6. Member sign-in forms 7. Incident report forms 8. Cellular phone. If the Lead Road Captain or Group Leader does not have a cell phone, they will designate a member who does as the 911 caller. Page 15
