When this newsletter is in print and being mailed to you, Ducky and I will be enjoying what we hope to be the cool temperatures of Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and the Canadian Rockies. This is a first for us to be out riding our bikes for two weeks. We will be traveling north through Utah, then we ll stay overnight near Jackson, WY. The next day we ll have a day of riding and visit Grand Teton. The following day is a day of riding through Montana where we ll stay four days in a cabin in Glacier National Park. Then we ll head northbound to ride across the Canadian Rockies before heading back south through Idaho. At the end of the two weeks, we will be meeting the Chapter in Ely, NV for the BBQ train and the ride home. A U G U S T Our Chapter events for August include a morning ride along the North Shore Road of Lake Mead with a stop at PT s for breakfast/lunch; an overnighter in Historic Ely, NV with a ride on the Northern Nevada Railway that includes a BBQ dinner; a Meet & Eat at Red Robin; a ride through the Red Rock Canyon National Conversation area ending with breakfast at the Egg & I; a dinner ride to Steiner s and then the annual overnighter to the Four Corners area where we will be staying in Cortez, Colorado over the Labor Day weekend. INSIDE THIS In September, we will be assisting the San Bernardino County Sheriff s Office with their annual Desert Thunder Event. The event itself is held at Primm, NV with our Chapter managing their poker run, which includes stops in the Las Vegas valley area. In return, they donate money to the charity of our choice, which will be the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. We will be looking for volunteers for the poker stops and will also have a Chapter ride for the event. 2 Editor s Note Well, the heat is on! August is already here and with the humidity we ve had lately, it sometimes feels unbearable. I rode across town last month in the afternoon (about 30 miles via I-95) and by the time I got to my destination, my head was pounding and I felt light-headed and dizzy. I couldn t believe how quickly my body dehydrated after drinking plenty of water before I left the house. After the ride, it took about two bottles of water and 20 minutes in the air -conditioning before I started to feel like myself again. So, the next week I bought one of those cooling vests from Harley so that I wouldn t totally miss out on summer riding. I soaked it for about 5 minutes, lightly rang it out, and WOW, what a difference! I used it on a trip to San Diego over 4th of July weekend and couldn t believe the difference it made in cooling me down on the bike. Even after most of the moisture had gone, it was still cool and regulated my temperature to a comfortable level. Whether you buy Harley brand or not, I highly recommend getting one. The guys I rode with did not have one and they were really feeling the heat. I, on the other hand, enjoyed a pleasant ride without the usual hairdryer blowing on me the entire ride. I can t believe I didn t get one two summers ago when I first started riding. What was I thinking??? I know a lot of you are taking summer vacations right now; I m heading to Sedona in a couple of days myself, so enjoy the rest of the summer and try to stay cool. Your Editor, Michelle Nieto Important Updates... H.O.G. Appreciation Watch for more information on the August H.O.G. Appreciation day, which will be held on Tuesday, August 12 th (same day as our General Membership Meeting). This is the start of this event being held on a quarterly basis. It will be all day for Chapter members who show their local membership cards. Chapter Poker Run-Breakfast ride to Pahrump We had a total of 26 bikes and 36 members who purchased a total of $425 in poker hands. We stopped at the Nugget in Pahrump to have a breakfast buffet but upon arriving at 7am, we learned that the buffet doesn t open until 8am. The café personnel were great and served us a delicious breakfast in no time. Just a hint-they have bacon & eggs breakfast for $1.99 and steak and eggs for $2.99. At our last stop, we opened the poker cards and Bill Codak won $213 with his poker hand of 3 Jacks. Congratulations Bill! Kindred Spirit Group Ride Home The Kindred Spirit group riders will be holding their final meeting to complete plans for their trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the Harley-Davidson 105 th and Harley Owner s Group 25 th celebrations. This meeting will be at 6:30 pm, Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Nikki Lee s Sports Pub and Grill, 2640 E. Sunset Road (Eastern and Sunset). 5 Thunder on the Mountain Kilts Across America On July 12 we had the pleasure of riding with two men from Scotland. Colin and Iain were making a trip from Boston to Los Angeles on Harley-Davidson motorcycles (Kilts Across America) to raise awareness and funds to help combat Moebius. Moebius is a rare condition that prevents the use of facial muscles, no ability to smile or show any emotion using facial muscles. Colin s son George is afflicted with this condition. We met Colin and Iain at LVHD on the morning of Saturday, July 12. We spent a couple of hours visiting with them and George, listening to stories about their trip and getting to know them just a little bit. Of course lots of pictures were taken, which will be posted on our Web site and theirs. Then sadly it was time for them to leave for the last leg of their trip. We formed up and led them out of the parking lot and headed west on Sahara. Once we got to the interstate, we turned south towards Los Angeles. Iain and Colin were 3 rd and 4 th in line with their RV at the end of the line of SNHOG riders. We led them out of town and had planned to wave good-bye to them when we pulled off at Jean. But it didn t work out that way. When we pulled off so did they. They wanted to thank us for the escort and inform us that they were so thrilled that our chapter had taken the time to ride with them. In fact we were the only chapter in the country that had taken the time to ride with them. We now have another international invitation to come and visit, and share the road with them in Scotland. 6 July 2008 SNHOG General Membership Meeting Minutes Our Director Karen Heriford opened the meeting at 7:00 PM, asking all to greet someone they did not know. Karen then talked about the past overnight trip to Sequoia and the breakfast ride to Pahrump, encouraging all to join the next one. She mentioned that we will scan Loyalty Cards at the end of events and rides. Tom Plehn, our Dealer Rep, was then introduced. He welcomed everyone and informed us that the dealership will now have quarterly H.O.G. Appreciation Days to coincide with our monthly meetings every third month. Wow, great savings to be had by all members! Karen then talked about the upcoming trip to Ely and the BBQ train ride. You must pay for the trip as soon as possible. The train only holds 40 people and we have 30 spaces reserved with at least one other couple having tickets. The Hotel Nevada, where we are staying, was built in 1929 and has much history. Karen introduced Chuck Lennon, Past Director from the Black Mountain Chapter. He has put in a bid for both chapters to host the 2009 Nevada State Rally, here in the Las Vegas area. It will be May 14-16, 2009, called the Hoover Dam Ride/Poker Run, based in Boulder City. More information to come! Just a reminder: Meet & Eats are to join with fellow members, share a meal and conversation. Please don t order your food until the designated time when everyone will begin together! Try to include new members at your table! Our next Meet & Eat will be at Lucille s on Wednesday July 23, 2008 at 6:30 PM and the following one on July 31, 2008 will be at Ruby Tuesday s also at 6:30 PM. Please come out and socialize with your chapter members! We will also have visitors from New Zealand joining us at Lucille s. The Road Captains will be escorting them from their hotel. Please save extra seats at your table for a guest or two! Karen then welcomed the newest ambassadors to the chapter: Rich Moore and Ed Gibson. Jim Larson (Lead Road Captain) spoke about our New Member Ride, July 27, 2008, which will leave the Albertson s in Boulder City, kick stands up at 8:00 AM. Then Jim talked about the pair of tickets to the Harley Museum to be given away at the August General Membership Meeting. Clar Larson, our Chapter Treasurer gave the monthly report. We have an ice cream ride on July 12, at 5:00 PM meeting at Albertsons North West. Our upcoming events were discussed as well as the group from Scotland who will be coming to Las Vegas during their fund raising ride. All were encouraged to join in this event on Saturday July 12. Kilts across America raises money for children who have an illness that stops the muscles in the face from showing any emotions so they can t smile. Clar Larson, Treasurer Thunder on the Mountain will be held July As always this event is held in Brian Head, Utah to benefit the Volunteer Fire Department. Karen will scan your cards at the end of this Poker run/ride! The event is sponsored by Larry s Western Meats. Desert Thunder Poker Run will be September and we will need volunteers for this event! 7 From the Road Captains... Hi everyone, my name is Mark Mogavero. I m one of your Road Captains. Most of you know me and some don t. I ve been with this chapter since 2002 and have held several different officer positions. I have been a Road Captain for about 8 months. We all like to ride and have fun. I can t stress enough how important it is to be prepared for anything that might happen while you re on your bike. If you re not prepared, a fun ride can become a disaster. In hot weather it is better to cover as much of your body as possible to keep the sun off your skin. You will actually stay cooler with a light colored long sleeve shirt than if you were wearing a tank top. A cool vest is also a good investment as well as a heating jacket during the cold months. When you are comfortable, your ride is a lot more enjoyable. In hot weather it is very important to stay hydrated. You should start hydrating the night before you plan on riding. Dehydration can give you heat stroke and you can actually pass out while riding. Not Good. This is dangerous to you as well as others riding with you. I m going to tell you about a couple of incidents that happened to my wife Lene and I while we were on some Chapter rides. We were on our way back to Vegas from up North one summer and the Chapter decided not to stop at one of our scheduled stops. Well, Lene was on the verge of heat stroke and I wasn t aware of what was happening. At that time we didn t have an intercom or CB radio on our bike. I myself was feeling kind of woosie so I pulled out of the group in Moapa and several other bikes followed. All of us were overheated. The people in the Casino at Moapa gave us salt pills and water as we all cooled down. Another time we were on our way home from Kingman and my clutch went out. We sat on the side of the road for over an hour waiting for a tow. Needless to say we had no phone service but luckily one of the other Road Captains stopped with us and was able to get out on his phone. Lucky for us the weather was good that day. Incidents like I just mentioned go to show you that you can t be prepared enough. Always bring plenty of water and snacks with you and a cell phone if you have one. You never know when or where you might break down and you don t know how long you re going to be stranded. What if your cell phone has no service? Ask yourself, what would I do? Always remember the Buddy system, try not to ride alone if possible. With that said, remember to be prepared for any situation; heat, cold, rain, mechanical problems, etc. Always ride your own ride, be safe and alert and take care of your passenger if you have one. 9 Sequoia Overnighter By Robert and Devlin Baldwin To start things off, I just want to say that if any of you have not had the opportunity to go on an overnighter, especially Sequoia, you really have been missing out. The ride started at the Silverton Hotel. First stop was a quick stop for gas in Baker, and then we went on to Charlie Brown Farms for lunch. Charlie Brown Farms was an experience to remember. As we pulled in we were greeted by a little old lady dressed totally Gothic and looking like part of the furniture. Lunch was whatever you could stomach including Ostrich Eggs, Alligator, Buffalo and Kangaroo. We had chicken fingers? (Maybe) They had about ten shops set up in an outhouse type pattern (locks on the bathroom doors outside) with all kinds of knick knacks and plenty of old fashioned candy. After browsing a bit, it was back on the bikes for the next leg of the journey to a gas stop in Mojave. We watered our mounts and continued on to a stop at Bakersfield Harley-Davidson. Yes, we spent money. Then it was on to the Best Western Town and Country Lodge arriving about 6:00 pm. After the long ride it was time to cool down so we all got our rooms, changed and reconvened at the pool and spa. Wow, talk about relaxing. After we soaked up all the water we could (and a couple of drinks) we walked over to Burger King for dinner. They were a little surprised to see a bunch of bikers strolling in for dinner but they handled it well. After dinner it was back to the rooms for some much appreciated sleep. I think we all woke up anticipating the day ahead. We were waiting for the hotel to open the continental breakfast room by 6:45 am and fought the bus load of tourists for the waffles. Great start to a great day. We were on the bikes by 7:30 am and headed for the hills. Up the winding roads we went, higher and higher into God s country (very, very beautiful). Our next stop was General Sherman s Tree, the largest Sequoia in diameter at thirty eight feet. We had to walk a half mile to see it and thankfully there was a shuttle to take us back to the parking lot. However, some chose the exercise hike back up the trail. After everyone regrouped, we headed on up the road and stopped for lunch in the park (they actually did a great job serving all of us in a speedy and courteous fashion). Back on the road we went to a place called Hume Lake (weird lake here with a pool next to it!) We wondered if we could swim in the lake or??? We fueled up with the only gas available, Regular Unleaded so the bikes could wheeze along with us. Anyway, not the time to diddle so we rode on up Kings Canyon Scenic Byway following the Kings River till the road ran out. Gorgeous road even if you have to go up and back. The scenery was awesome and the fellowship divine. To be a part of twelve bikes and eighteen people winding thru the mountains and canyons is beyond belief. We strolled around the end of the road (Be sure to ask someone about the end of the road and the Rock) turned reluctantly around and rode back to Hume Lake. The ride back to the hotel was very interesting without a straight stretch of road to be found. It took a little longer than expected because we Vegans think it only takes 30 minutes to go thirty miles (only around Vegas guys). The roads up here are MPH for the experienced rider. We took it nice and easy so it took a little longer than anticipated. We got back late; we think it was around eight, not sure what time since we left watches at home on purpose. We all agreed to just go to a cool restaurant called Cool Hand Luke s and invade the place without reservations. Well, it did not even phase them. They seated everyone who chose to walk over and we enjoyed a fabulous dinner with great friends. Then it was off to bed for some much wanted rest. 6:45 am Sunday morning we were waiting for the same continental breakfast, after which it was time to head home. We left the motel about 7:30 am and rode thru to Lake Isabella (a curvy little ride thru the canyon) where we fueled up and refreshed ourselves. Then it was on to Kramer Junction for gas and lunch. Entering Kramer s Junction we knew we were getting back into the desert (it started to get HOT), so after a long stop for lunch at Burger King, everyone loaded up on the cool vests, soaked shirts and ice. We have no doubt some thought we were nuts. As we left, we picked up the pace and rode into Baker for the last gas stop before the rides end. Took a long gas stop to allow everyone s temperature to return to almost normal then we headed on to Jean for Ice Cream and an end to a great ride and adventure. Yes, there was more, and those who were there can tell their own version. So next time, come make your own memories with us. PAGE 9

11 Know Your ABCs (ABCs of Touring) Knowing your HOG benefits should be like knowing your ABCs. Take, for instance, the ABCs of Touring it s not as if any of us really need an extra incentive to ride. But there s something thrilling about exploring the back roads and happening upon a town that begins with the letter Z. It s the little discoveries that make riding so fulfilling.
