1 S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # From the Director s Saddle Greetings to My HOG Family, I find it hard to believe how fast the year is flying by. I know we have stayed busy and that certainly makes the time pass quickly but this is unbelievable. Yet, here we are in May already. We have tried to keep the schedule as full as possible to take advantage of the wonderful weather we are having. This time of year is blessed with some beautiful riding weather. May is going to be a very busy riding month. Those of you that would like to take advantage of it will have something every weekend. We will start out with the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure on May 2 nd. This is not the first time we have supported this event and it always turns out to be a lot of fun while supporting a very worthy cause. If you have the time, I urge you to join us for what will be a very fun walk. The following day, we are going to be doing two events. The first one is our New Member Ride. For you new members, this is an event primarily for you. Many of you come to the Chapter with years of riding experience, but many don t. Most new members have never experienced riding as part of a large group, so this is an important first ride with our Chapter. Prior to the ride, we will explain how we ride, how we communicate with each other during the ride and then we will go on a fairly short ride. We want our new members to be completely comfortable with riding in a group. This is the intention of the ride, plus you get to meet lots of your new family and they get to meet you. Immediately following the ride, we will all have the opportunity to get some slow speed training provided by the Metro Motor Officer s trainers. Continued on Page 2 S.N.H.O.G. 2 Editor s Note I thought the group would get a kick out of this photo (since it s starting to get a little on the warm side). The photo was taken this past December by Cheryl Hintsala (who shoveled the snow herself) to make it easier for John to get into their driveway after work. They re both now retired and have purchased a new RV and plan to start an adventurous cross-country venture in a month or so. (Of course, they will get a trailer and tow the Harley and Jeep behind their huge RV). Congratulations to them but they will be greatly missed when they leave SNHOG territory. Enjoy the ride no matter what the weather is like!!!! Director s Saddle...continued Mike Pence has been working for the last couple of months with the Metro Training Division setting up this event. Learning more about being able to safely handle a Harley at slow speeds is something I think we can all benefit from. I hope to see many of you there to take advantage of this FREE training. Not only is it free, but RRHD will be providing us with lunch and that s a hard deal to beat. On the 12 th, we will have our Annual Chapter Picnic. Once again, it will be at Mountain Crest in the Northwest part of the valley. As always, our dinner will be served by representatives from our wonderful dealerships. I have met members from a lot of other chapters who don t have many positive things to say about their sponsoring dealerships. That is definitely not the case with us. In addition to enjoying the meal and the fellowship of your HOG family, you may want to pass on your thanks to our dealerships for all that they do for us. The following weekend is the Nevada State HOG Rally. It took a couple of years to get it back in the South but it is here this year. Thanks should be given to Chuck Lennon on this one. He has spent several months working to make this event a success. If you see Chuck, be sure and thank him. How sweet would it be if we could get the Rally here again next year. We have a ride for Breakfast that weekend too. This one will be to Indian Springs where, during the Bordello Run, the owner invited us to come back. So, we will give his establishment a try and see how we like it. Let me know what you think after the ride. The following weekend is a double overnighter to Carson City. If you have never been to the northern part of the state, you ought to find a way to go. The scenery is spectacular and so is the riding. You won t have to put up with any hot weather riding while you are there. On Sunday, there will be a ride around Lake Tahoe. I expect there will be lots of stopping and picture taking on that ride. The lake views are fantastic. If you don t want to ride around the lake on Sunday, there are tons of places to see and all of them, I am sure, will fill your memory bag for the next few years. That rounds out the month. There should be something in there for everyone, at least I hope so. I will be having a planning meeting with the primaries in early June to set up the ride schedule for the rest of the year. That means that you still have an opportunity to get in that special ride that you would like to see the Chapter go on. If there is a destination that you think the Chapter would enjoy riding to, let me know. If we can plug it into the schedule, we will. If we can t squeeze it in this year, I will add it to the list that will be passed on to the planners for next year. Either way, you may find your favorite local area ride ends up on our schedule. Lastly, let me add that we have a few members that are having some health issues. When we can, we update the message board on the web site. Please take a few moments to check it out. Keep those members that need them in your thoughts and prayers. Hopefully, they will be back to riding with us soon and feeling much better. You all ride safe and I will see you on the next one. Larry Kusler If it isn't fun, we're doing it wrong P A G E 2

Be sure to visit our online PHOTO GALLERY at Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. Our SNHOG Online Photo Gallery is also a great way to share the fun we have as a Chapter with friends, family and anyone who is skeptical about joining our Chapter. All you have to do is browse the gallery for a few minutes and will quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round! Although Sharon Gordon, Deena McClain, Janine Patrick and Kenn Wynn are the "photographers" for the Chapter, they are obviously not the only ones who take pictures at our events. If you have photos you would like to submit, please send them to photos@snhoglv.com. Be sure to include the date and event the photos were taken and any other description you would like included. We will also be happy to post your name, crediting you with the photos you've taken. 4 Hogs on the High Seas Mexican Riviera Cruise By Karen Heriford The Hogs on the High Seas Cruise will soon be changing their name to High Seas Rally but, no matter what they go by, it is the best way to spend a week with friends and at the same time do something wonderful for dialysis patients. On Saturday, March 28 th Mark & Lene Mogavero, Paul & Wendy Smith, Gary & Lana Childers, Larry & Bev Kusler, Ducky and I headed to San Pedro, CA for the first night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. After checking into the hotel, we took a short walk to the marina for dinner and then returned to the hotel for the pre-party. We made our purchase of our 50/50 tickets and some of us also purchased tickets for a chance to win a future cruise. There was music and fun to be had. Of course, we had gotten up early for our days ride and the give-away was to be at 9PM. I made the suggestion that we start a new tradition by going upstairs to get into our pajamas and come back down for the give-away. This suggestion was okay with all but one couple who apparently did not bring pajamas. I won t mention any names but he wears a white rope. The next morning, we enjoyed a buffet breakfast and were then taken by shuttle bus to the harbor terminal. After checking in to with Royal Caribbean, we received our welcome packets from Hogs on the High Seas (HOHS) and later boarded the ship where we were treated to the first of many meals and then found our staterooms. We had been able to book the rooms in a row, all with balconies. Our Mexican Riviera cruise took us to Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan. At each port, we walked the local area and took in many shops. We went to the Harley-Davidson dealership in Cabo and then had lunch at Cabo Wabo. In Mazatlan, we walked the boardwalk along the shoreline and had lunch at the Hard Rock after visiting Senor Frogs. During a 7 days cruise, there are two formal nights. We made other passengers envious because we did not dress up in formals and tux s but in our leathers. Over the seven days, we enjoyed activities on board the ship that were provided by Royal Caribbean and also those of HOHS. One of the Royal Caribbean events was an art auction. Mark, Lene, Ducky and I sat in and one of the featured artists was Scott Jacobs, who has been commissioned for art work by Harley-Davidson. I took the chance and won one of his pieces which had a bottle of tequila and a HOHS sign. The ship also had a rock climbing wall which Wendy conquered and rang the bell. During the evenings, HOHS had get-togethers where we had the chance to win prizes donated by the vendors and 50/50 drawings. On Tuesday evening, Wendy won the 50/50 for a prize of $ During the week, Larry and Bev won vendor prizes and Lana won a vendor prize during the poker walk. Our Cruise Ship Captain, Per Kristoffersen is a biker and gave HOHS passes to see the Control Room and his Quarters and Gary won a pass for four during an auction. On the last night of the cruise, the HOHS had an auction where items such as the welcome signs were auctioned off even though many of them had words misspelled or the dates were incorrect. There were other items that had been donated just for the auction, including a quilt made of the HOHS T-shirts. It was all in fun as the money was donated straight to the main reason for the cruise, the chance for dialysis patients to take a vacation. (Continued on Page 5) P A G E 4

5 Hogs on the High Seas Mexican Riviera Cruise (continued) During each of the cruises, HOHS invites dialysis patients who are sponsored by a rider to join in the fun. HOHS pays for the dialysis patient and for all of their dialysis treatment which includes the nursing staff, doctors and the equipment. Many dialysis patients need treatments three times a week and that makes it impossible for them to take a vacation. Because of HOHS, numerous patients have been able to enjoy the time of their life. Many of them expressed their appreciation during the get-togethers and thanked all of us for taking part in the cruise and letting them join us. One of them even stated that she had an image of bikers before getting on board the ship and now she knows that we are just marshmallows with tattoos. We learned that we were one of the smallest groups that have participated in HOHS and we donated and/or rose over $50, for the dialysis fund. If you have never taken a cruise or are ready for the time of your life, I strongly recommend joining us in October 2010 for the Western Caribbean cruise. Information is available on or just ask one of us about our cruise. Be ready to see some of the biggest grins ever as we tell you about how much fun we had. PAGE 5

6 Why be part of Southern Nevada H.O.G. By: Gary & Lana Childers Riders join motorcycle groups for many reasons. Some for the colors that go with the club, some for their own identity, and for others it may be because of common interests. Whatever your reason, I am sure you will make your selection to fit your own lifestyle. Southern Nevada Harley Owners Group (SNHOG) has many types of riding opportunities. Depending on the type of event, you may see a lot of members, such as the monthly membership meeting or you can be a part of a small group of volunteers who do things that may strain your character a little, while giving you a warm fuzzy feeling afterwards. It seems there is always something happening that tickles someone s fancy however. We do feature Harley riding in several different styles. All the types and styles are brought to the members in the safest and a most enjoyable manner. Our riding events are lead by our Road Captains. They have many hours of classroom training as well as advanced riding skills before they apply for the Road Captain position. If you ever have the opportunity to listen on your CB channel 33 during a ride, you may be surprised at all that is going on to keep the Chapter safe. These guys really enjoy helping the Chapter to have a successful ride. We also have a great time doing things totally unrelated to riding, such as eating, that s one of our favorites. In fact, over the years, we have gotten to know many of the Chapter members new and old, just from sitting with someone different at our Meet-N-Eats. We also have overnight trips. Some of my fondest memories of this Chapter have been from these trips. We rode all day to go to Twin Falls Idaho, just missing a rain storm as we entered the hotel. Later that afternoon, the group had a terrific dinner at a restaurant within walking distance from the hotel. We had a great time from start to finish. Another great ride was to Pismo Beach where we were able to see all the huge sea lions on the beach basking in the sun. We had a terrific ride in the mountains that day and then met for a fabulous dinner that evening. We had such a great time that day that it only seemed fitting to ask the terrific lady I was with to be my wife. This group is indeed like a family. One of the great things about SNHOG is that in six months you can try your hand at working in one of the many volunteer positions available, or you can enjoy being a member. Some have applied to be ambassadors so they can be available to other new members that need assistance. Others just like to volunteer for events so they can do whatever it takes to make it another great event. Gary became a road captain so that he might be able to help keep the rides safer, and I became an officer so I could be more involved with our group. Whatever your comfort level, it is always your decision where and what you would like to do. If you haven t joined yet, please come check us out. P A G E 6

We ll even give you a pin and patch for just signing up (registration is FREE). After that, additional pins, patches and motorcycle medallions will be awarded at various intervals. Your first reward comes at just 1,000 miles (1,610km). Of course, there are some rules you ll have to follow: Only active HOG members (full, life, associates and associate life) may participate. If you have more than one Harley, you have to enroll each one, and only the mileage after you enroll will count towards your award. You may participate as a rider, a passenger or both just make sure you fill out a form for each. And, your Enrollment Form (available at the Chapter meetings) and award submissions must be officially endorsed by an Authorized Harley Davidson Dealership. However, it is still your responsibility to submit them once they are endorsed. So, what are you waiting for? Get enrolled in the program, enjoy riding with the Chapter, and reap the rewards for putting enjoyable miles on your Harley. P A G E 8

10 From the Road Captains... By Larry Petsche Sharing the road if it s meant to be it s up to me! Hello fellow HOG members. As you can see from the heading above, I am addressing Sharing the Road. This is a particularly interesting topic, due to the fact that sharing the road with four wheelers is a two-way street and involves education. The only way that the four wheelers are going to get it is by educating them that we re out there and we re more vulnerable than they are. So, some ways of starting this ball rolling are: 1. Visibility - be aware of your lane location in regards to any four wheeler s blind spots. 2. Try and wear clothing that draws attention to you. 3. Lights, lights, lights the more the better. 4. If someone does pull out in front of you or makes a close lane change, get up next to them and wave to them (with all fingers), let them know that you were and are there. 5. Flash your headlights at anyone attempting to pull out in front of you. 6. Riders with less experience familiarize yourself with all of your hand controls so you can keep focused on the road and the traffic at all times. 7. In traffic, cover your horn button with your thumb at all times. 8. If you re in conversation with someone that does not ride, let them know your concerns and challenges of riding a two or three wheeler on the road. We, as a community of concerned motorcyclists, need to get involved with the local and state legislators and get some verbiage in the drivers handbook regarding motorcycle awareness and sharing the road. Even though drivers of four wheelers know we re out there, they don t know the challenges that we face driving two and three wheeler s they need to be more informed! Keep the rubber side down and remember - if the ride is too long..take more Aleve! See you on the next ride! Larry Petsche, Road Captain P A G E 10
