1 S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # A U G U S T, From the Director s Saddle Once again, I send greetings to all of my HOG family. We have now made it through July and only have one month of extremely hot weather in front of us. The ride schedule was reduced for the hot weather but not eliminated. We have still been able to get together for a few rides and, hopefully, those of you that were able to make them, found them enjoyable. We will continue with a reduced schedule for August and have tried our best to keep the rides as interesting as they can be. We have also adjusted some of the leave times to Get out of Dodge before the heat becomes completely oppressive. As for riding in the heat, many of you are old timers at it and, for you, I apologize now. But, for many of you, hot weather riding is a new experience and it is you that I am really talking to. When riding through the desert or around town when it is hot, you shouldn t wait until you are thirsty to drink. If you wait that long, you have waited far too long. You really should pre-hydrate. That is, start drinking water (which is preferable) or one of the many sport drinks that are on the market. Continued on Page 2 S.N.H.O.G. 2 Director s Saddle...continued The sport drinks will certainly go a long way toward replacing what you lose through perspiration. However, dehydration is a sinister little thing. You can feel fine and then all of a sudden, you may start to feel dizzy or you may simply faint. As you can imagine, both of these things are considered bad if either of them happen while you are riding. The Chapter will always make lots of stops during a hot weather ride. Use the stops to get something to drink. Even if you aren t thirsty, DRINK! Don t forget your passenger, if you have one. It won t help much if you are doing fine but your passenger gets overcome by the heat. If we make a stop and you aren t feeling particularly well, say something to one of the Road Captains or to the attending officer on that ride. Don t be embarrassed to let us know that you are having some heat related issues. If you aren t feeling on top of the world, the chances are that you aren t the only one. We would all rather take the time to make sure than to have a minor issue escalate into something big. If you are riding on your own and you need to take a break, then by all means find a shady spot, pull over and drink some of the water that you should be carrying with you. If it is a Chapter ride and you feel the need to pull over then pull over. One of the Road Captains will pull over with you and make sure you get the attention you need. The Chapter is never going to be in such a hurry that we are going to have to risk anyone s health just to get to our destination. I have said many times that I truly feel that I have added several hundred members to my family. I don t want anyone in my family to get hurt on a ride. This time of year, all of us should be carrying something to drink on every ride. I don t mean an adult beverage. I am talking about water or one of the aforementioned sports drinks. You never can be sure that you aren t going to be on the side of the road for a little while. How many of you have seen other bikers sitting on the side of the road waiting for help? Should you break down when you aren t on a Chapter ride, it could be a little while before you get some help. In our desert environment, you can become dehydrated very quickly. I know I am repeating myself here, but every year I hear people talking about how crappy they felt on a ride last year and how much they wished we had stopped. I don t want to have anyone have that experience. Dehydration is a preventable condition. But it isn t always prevented. You may not have even noticed, but on each of our summer rides, those wonderful Road Captains of ours are doing more than leading us on the ride. On future rides, if you are observant, you will see the Road Captains splitting up and visiting with our members at each of the stops. What they are doing is trying to find out if anyone is in need of a slightly longer break. There is absolutely no reason to leave before everyone is ready to continue the trip. Our destinations are not a moving target; they will still be there when we get there. So, ride safe, ride often and we shall see you soon. Larry Kusler If it isn't fun, we're doing it wrong P A G E 2

3 Editor s Note by Johni Lewis What a wonderful way to remember all the great rides!! These are patchwork squares made by Jeanette Downen each square is made in coordinating fabric to go with the patches collected on Larry & Jeanette s Harley trips. Jeanette has only six more to make (she still needs 5 patches) and then it will be a total of 56 squares (enough for a king sized quilt). This has been almost a three year project for Jeanette (who works full time). She has now decided that, after she sews the patches together, she will embroider various designs around each square (much the same as in crazy quilts). This will obviously take some time as well. Amazing!! I ll bet there s more members with great ideas on how to commemorate our rides (Let us know!!) We ve got some really talented people in our group (We know Karen Heriford makes beautiful quilts also and Sharon Gordon makes gorgeous pottery). Share with us we would all love to see your work!! 4 Welcome New Members New Members: Ben, Marco, Don and Al (Not necessarily in that order) Friendly Reminder... Be sure to visit our online PHOTO GALLERY at Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. Our SNHOG Online Photo Gallery is also a great way to share the fun we have as a Chapter with friends, family and anyone who is skeptical about joining our Chapter. All you have to do is browse the gallery for a few minutes and will quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round! Although Sharon Gordon, Deena McClain, Janine Patrick and Kenn Wynn are the "photographers" for the Chapter, they are obviously not the only ones who take pictures at our events. If you have photos you would like to submit, please send them to photos@snhoglv.com. Be sure to include the date and event the photos were taken and any other description you would like included. We will also be happy to post your name, crediting you with the photos you've taken. Thanks so much *** Note: If you prefer not to have your photo on the website, request a photo be removed or photo information updated, please let us know and we ll make the changes as soon as possible. You must mention the album name and placement number of the photo in question. Sharon Gordon Deena McClain Janine Patrick Kenn Wynn P A G E 4

5 LADIES OF HARLEY Saturday, June 27, 2009 was the LOH brown bag lunch ride to Mt. Charleston via Lee Canyon around to the hotel. If you missed it, you missed out on a lot of fun! Those that came out, enjoyed a short ride up and out of the heat of Las Vegas to enjoy the cool of Mt. Charleston. After eating our brown bag lunches, Penny and I brought out some games for anyone that wanted to participate. We even had prizes for the 1st place winners: $25.00 chips donated by Red Rock Harley-Davidson, TY beanie baby hogs donated by Wendy, show tickets/dinners donated by Penny. Thanks go out to Joe DeJulius for setting up the use of the hotel, and we must not forget to thank the hotel for the use of their grounds. Note: they have invited us back anytime day or night! Games played and winners were as follows: Bean bag toss: 1st place / Larry Kusler Balloon toss: 1st place team / Ed Tozier and Jill Petsche Three legged race: 1st place team / Troy Palmer and Nancy DeViese Golf putting: 1st place / Matt Garland Balloon toss: 1st place team / Robert Baldwin and Joe Hewitt After the games where completed, it was time to get back on our bikes and head back down into the heat of Las Vegas. Coming back into town, we made a stop at Cold Stone Creamery in the northwest to cool down with some ice cream, scan cards, and say goodbye to everyone. To everyone that came out, Penny and I would like to say Thank You. For those that missed it, we hope to see you on our next ride. News on an upcoming LOH event: Dust off those bowling balls and shoes and get ready to bowl at Santa Fe Station on Sunday, September 13, 2009 from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. for a total of three games and three hours of fun! The cost will be $20.00 per person (no discounts for children or seniors); this price includes three games, shoes, pizza and soda. Everyone is welcome to come out and have fun, including those with children (children must be old enough to toss the ball and know how to bowl). I must warn you that we draw numbers for lane assignments, so you probably won t get to bowl with your spouse, or children; it s the luck of the draw. (NO switching we write your names down for the lane you draw.) This is so everyone can get to know other people better! Make sure you sign up because we need a total head count to reserve our lanes. Also, you must pay in advance. We ll start taking money at the next general membership meeting in August and you must be paid by the September 8th general membership meeting. 7 From the Road Captains... Can You Do One? By Gary Childers Can you do a one, two or five thousand mile Harley vacation without a trailer?? Of course you can!!!!!!!!! The only thing different from a long trip and a day ride is a little planning. There are a few things that should be considered. First, you want your bike to be in a good and safe condition. Get a complete service and have the experts check out all the things that may be a little hard for us to deal with. Things like tires, brake pads, clutch wear and adjustments, fuel system adjustments, spark plugs and so on. After we have our bikes in great order, we need to get ourselves in order. It is always good to spend a few weeks or days before you are scheduled to leave to be sure your entire household and business are taken care of. You don t want to find you re thinking about something you should have done, when you need to focus on your riding skills and the beautiful scenery. If you are riding with friends, you may want to offer some help, if it is appropriate, to ensure they are prepared as well. It is so much nicer to be at ease with the world and enjoy the time seeing the country. Some of the things that will help give you that warm fuzzy comfortable feeling is being confident you are prepared. There are a tremendous number of things that can take the warm fuzziness away from your trip - the unforeseen occurrences that are impossible to plan for but sometimes happen. The one thing that Harley owners can have that will cover just about all the problems we might run into, is a good roadside assistance program, such as: Road America the extended plan. They are experts at putting together the necessary things to bring back the fuzzy feelings. The term, Don t Leave Home Without It does apply. You always want to have the necessities that will help you solve a few of your own issues and possibly help out a friend or fellow rider. Probably, one of the most important things you can have, is an adequately stocked first-aid kit. You can find all types and sizes of pre-assembled kits in most drug stores or medical supply outlets. For the most pa, these kits are okay. When you re shopping for a kit, look for one that has a supply of large bandages, tape, tweezers, and something to cover an eye with. Of course, you may want a few band-aids and smaller items, but don t waste a lot of space on the smaller items. For your personal use, you will want things such as aspirin or the pain reliever of your choice. You will want non-drowsy antihistamines for allergies. A couple of bottles of water with sport lids need to be put aside (do not open) for washing and flushing purposes. Continued on next page P A G E 7

8 From the Road Captains continued Now we come to a first-aid kit for your bike, better known as a tool kit. You can assemble one of these to fit your ability to do mechanical repairs. If you are handy, let the space available determine the size of the kit. If you are not handy with tools, you may want to consult your service tech and get their advice as to the things that should be in the kit. In this case, it is important to have everything you need: tools, parts, etc. so that someone qualified, most likely a friend or fellow rider, will have everything they need to help you. Now that we have used up all the available space with the necessities, it is time to put together your clothes. There are two types of clothes: riding and non-riding. Your riding clothes consist of long pants, boots, shirts (long and short sleeves) and jackets. For jackets, two thin jackets that can be worn in layers are usually better than a heavy one and a lighter one. Your non-riding clothes consist of a pair of flip-flops and shorts. Your toiletries are the most important in this category. Your clothes seem to be the least important and, therefore, the last thing to consider. You really do not need much when it comes to clothes. Your clothes can be limited to one extra set of riding clothes, extra socks and underwear. If you pack your oldest and most raggedy underwear, you can just toss them when you are done with them and buy more. You always buy tee shirts when you are away from home, so wear them and mail them home when they get dirty. That brings up another item that is handy. Before you leave home, print up a few mailing labels with your own address on them so you can find a box, tape the mailing label to it and send this stuff home. Last, it is a good idea to remember any medications you take daily and be sure you have enough for the entire time you will be away. Well, I have given you all my wisdom on this subject, so get out there and have a great time. If you have any suggestions I am all ears. See you in Sturgis, Gary Childers Lead Road Captain, SNHOG Make Your Miles Count The HOG Mileage Program is beautiful in its simplicity you ride, and we ll reward you. We ll even give you a pin and patch for just signing up (registration is FREE). After that, additional pins, patches and motorcycle medallions will be awarded at various intervals. Your first reward comes at just 1,000 miles (1,610km). Of course, there are some rules you ll have to follow: Only active HOG members (full, life, associates and associate life) may participate. If you have more than one Harley, you have to enroll each one, and only the mileage after you enroll will count towards your award. You may participate as a rider, a passenger or both just make sure you fill out a form for each. And, your Enrollment Form (available at the Chapter meetings) and award submissions must be officially endorsed by an Authorized Harley Davidson Dealership. However, it is still your responsibility to submit them once they are endorsed. So, what are you waiting for? Get enrolled in the program, enjoy riding with the Chapter, and reap the rewards for putting enjoyable miles on your Harley. P A G E 8
