An expected crowd of 700+ was anticipated (and catered for) but numbers fell way short of predictions. James, Chris, Garry and myself still had quite an enjoyable day feeding those who did show up, thanks to Julie T for being available to gopher anything we may have required in a hurry. I understand the Spud Shed was also unusually quiet, as they say we must take the good with the bad We held the group final of the 4 Way Test Speech contest Monday night at our hall, we were joined for our early meeting by club members from Fremantle, Fremantle Port and Cockburn clubs, our club meeting finished by 7pm and we were then joined at 7.30pm by many partners and visitors for the 4 Way Test Speech Contest. All three speakers performed with merit and our adjudicators had the unenviable task of selecting a winner, which was Sydney Fricker a Year 10 student from Hamilton Senior High School nominated by the Cockburn Club. 2 President Edd Samut The President s Pen We welcomed to our club tonight visiting Rotary members from Fremantle Port (President Rhonda Williams ) and other Rotary members from Fremantle and Cockburn Clubs ).Our first part of the evening was our usual club meeting, mind you it only ran for one hour, one of the shortest meeting in my time with our club. (All for a good reason) The second part of session was the 4 Way Test. The Rotary Club of Kwinana hosted the Group Final of the Four Way Speech Test to select the winner and runner up to progress to the next stage ( Zone Final ) of the competition. The speakers were 1.Anthony Iannantuoni (CBC Fremantle) Rotary Club of Fremantle 2. Damon Sutton (CBC Fremantle) Rotary Club of Fremantle Port 3. Sydney Fricker (Hamilton Hill Senior High School) Rotary Club of Cockburn It was an extremely successful night the speakers were a credit to their parents, teachers and rotary clubs. They spoke on a range of topics and incorporated the 4 way test in extremely well. Alas there can be only one winner and that was Sydney Fricker from Hamilton Hill Senior High School, she will compete in the next round. There was a good turnout of rotarians and their partners to hear the speakers. Many thanks go to Assistant Governor Bob Thompson for organizing and chairing the 4 Way test. The surplus money from our joint meeting with Rockingham and Palm Beach was $ This money will be donated to the Rockingham Kwinana Rotaract Club. 7 President Elect James Sharkey Club Services Report 26th November 2012 The four way test speeches following last Monday s meeting were excellent and a credit to the three students who took part. Thanks to Eric for arranging the sound system and to John W for producing our new lectern. It all looked very professional. Thanks also to Bob T and our adjudicators for running the event. Club elections will be taking place in a couple of weeks please give some thought to how you can assist in the running of the club next rotary year. A noted psychiatrist was a guest speaker at a large gathering, and his blonde hostess broached a subject of which the doctor was most at ease. "Doctor, would you mind telling me," she asked, "how you detect a mental deficiency in someone who appears completely normal?" "Nothing is easier," he replied. "You ask a simple question, one which anyone should be able to answer without any problem. If he or she hesitates, that puts you on the track." "What sort of question?" asked the hostess. "Well, you might ask, 'Captain Cook made three trips around the world and died during one of them. Which one?'" the doctor replied. The blonde thought for a moment, then said, "You wouldn't happen to have another example, would you? I've never known very much about history!"

PP Brian McCallum Vice President, PR Membership PP Harry Tebbutt Vocational P/M PP John Brennan International P/M Busy Bee last Saturday morning 17 th Club Rooms We erected 6 pine poles to accommodate the shade sails we have for our BBQ area. Many thanks to the members that gave up their Saturday morning to come along and assist. Michael N kindly loaned his post hole digger to make the task so much easier, Harry brought along a Bobcat to lift the poles into position, much to everyone s surprise everything went like clockwork and we now have 6 posts sitting in the ground ready to be concreted in. 9 General Business No General Business Fine Session: Stand in Sergeant PP Ian C Very short fine session tonight Chris imposed a fine on James, for asking customers do you want onions with that in his now legendary Scottish accent, Chris figured that he needed an interpreter, so made a sign on a piece of cardboard saying the said question in English Poor James copped it again, was seen walking across Calista Oval to join us ( Eric Chris and Garry waiting at our BBQ position. There were only 4 food vendors all in a line, James not 40 metres away, he couldn t see us waving at him, he was then seen to take out his mobile phone and ring us, fortunately it did not cost him a call as he finally spotted us. John D and Sam for turning up at the normal time for the meeting. John I copped a fine from Harry for not depositing the cash box from the Spud Shed with Julie who was waiting for it to arrive. While a ring around determined that John I was in possession of said box, John I claimed that he did attempt to deliver it but when he rang the bell it didn t work, but did not knock on the door. He then turned the tables on Harry and fined him for not replacing the battery in the doorbell. What a change in formalities, Chris O, James, Bob T and John W were fined for wearing a tie. (When I joined Rotary we were fined for NOT wearing a tie) The police came to my house earlier and said my dog chased someone on a bike. And I said you must be joking officer my dog hasn t got a bike. Just a little Christmas humour a letter to Santa.. Dear Santa This year all I want for Christmas is a fat bank account and a skinny body. Could you please not mix up the two like you did last year? OK.

10 4 Way Test Speech Contest Group Final. 26 th November 2012 Cockburn s speaker, Sydney Fricker is a Year 10 student from Hamilton Senior High School. Sydney is a confident young lady who has shown herself to be a skilled speaker and outstanding school leader throughout her 3 years at the school. Sydney is a talented musician, an Emergency Services Cadet and a highly academic, hardworking student. This year Sydney was also fortunate to be a member of the prestigious Sir Charles Court Leadership Program and most recently was an active participant in the Kwinana Industries Council - Education Partnership iwomen Forum. Sydney has been supported in preparing for this contest by her English Teacher Mrs Maureen Johnston and her family. Anthony Iannantuoni is a student from CBC Fremantle and is representing the Rotary Club of Fremantle. Anthony is involved in the cultural side of school through being a member of the choir and plays an instrument in the School band. On the sports field, Anthony loves and plays the game of soccer. Among his other interests is being a fan of Star wars. Second speaker, Damon Sutton supported by the Rotary Club of Fremantle Port. Damon is a student at CBC Fremantle and is huge lover of theatre, especially Australian contemporary theatre. He has performed many different roles in plays the school has staged. A member of the School s Jazz orchestra, Damon plays the trombone. He is a member of the School s debating team and spends some of his spare time playing video games.
