Together with Greg and Marge Williams, Gladys and I had a very enjoyable and interesting cruise along the Rivers, Rhine, Main and Danube from Amsterdam to Budapest. Thanks to Scenic Cruises the trip was five star all of the way, the organisation, the accommodation, the cuisine and the company was first class and a trip of a life-time. We welcomed PDG Liz Westoby and AG Barry Berger to our meeting this week. Liz came along to reinforce her commitment to the Club Visioning process we went through a couple of years ago. We had our BBQ trailer at the opening of the new Aldi store in Kwinana, one of four opened in WA on the same day. For about 11 hours our club members cooked sausages and onions, served to customers by ladies from Red Cross to masses of customers queued up outside waiting for entry to the store, great fundraiser for us and Red Cross. This week, long term member PP John Wallhead clocks up 31 years service to our Rotary Club, congratulations John and thank you. 2 Club President 2015/16 Max Bird 13 th June 2016 President Report President s Pen 1. The Club has been extremely busy the last few weeks and a big thank you to all, (maybe I should go away more often) 2. Rotary Club of Kwinana Restaurant Marri Park Tavern on 23 rd May 2016 was a great success thanks Brian 3. Combined Rotary Meeting 30th May at the Clipper inn Rockingham with Guest Speaker: Anne Carey 2016 WA Australian of the Year spoke on her time in Sierra Leone fighting Ebola. This was very interesting talk and I don t know if I would of went expecting not to come back 4. Very successful sausage sizzle at Bunning s thanks to Bob T and his crew 5. Again the Rotary Club of Kwinana made a great impression at the opening of Aldi with a 11 hour marathon sausages sizzle, however the club was highly praised for its efforts a Big thanks to John Iriks and all his helpers 6. Wellard markets was held again on Sunday 12 th June stall numbers were down again but it is winter and may improve next month 7. We have the opportunity to hold a Sausage sizzle at Bunning s on the Second Thursday of each month from July 14 th to December 8 th 2016,My personal feelings are we should be taking advantage of the opportunity 8. John Iriks proposes a great wildflower trip to Westonia from 2 nd September to 9 th September 2016, 5 caravan bays already booked at caravan park and one family room at the motel, if you want to go better get in quick 9. Project Director Ian urgently requires each director s and service managers annual reports for the 2015/16 Rotary year, Allowing for the inclusion into the Rotary Club of Kwinana annual report 10. Busy Bee required to clean out the freezers and fridges 11. International The international Committee has carried out the following. Our applications for Foundation Global Grants GG & GG have been resubmitted and we are now waiting on the new Rotary Club of Dili Lafaek-Timor, carrying out their training next week and gaining the qualifications to apply or partake in Foundation Global Grants Apple MacBook computers for Timor-Leste are now in the class rooms of Sol s 24/7 and hard at work (See full Report in ClubRunner) A small team of Ted Evans & Max Bird traveled to Timor-Leste on the 8th May returning 25th May 2016, and had a very productive trip, again see full report in ClubRunner, progressive reports to RAWCS and Foundation will or have been submitted. 3 Club Service: PP Mike Nella Please consider helping out with the bread project. Bread is continuing to be picked up and distributed around Kwinana, please help out with this worthy project if are able, please see Mike or Lorraine to be placed on their roster. Club Changeover scheduled for Saturday 9 July at the Darius Wells (Ken Jackman Room). Cost to be $35 per head. Michael Metcalf is also organising another busy bee for the hall; likely to be mid-june. Tasks to be done include mowing and raking lawns, weeding, tree lopping, cleaning the caravan. In addition, re-roofing of the hall will occur soon, as will some electrical work and white ant treatment. Members wishing to attend District Changeover are advised to use the District Website to register and pay, Wendy will you a rego form if you wish to register by post. PP Matt White Membership Project Director Ian wished to thank his managers for their outstanding contributions during the 2015/16 Rotary year. PDG John Iriks Community Membership Director Matt White took the opportunity to introduce Rotary to the Red Cross ladies at the Aldi opening, couple of good prospects. Next Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings. TBA Michael Metcalf will be meeting with local community groups to consider how we can work with them for the mutual benefit of everyone in our community. PP Genevieve Carr Vocational Pres. Max Bird International The next Wellard Village Markets to be held on Sunday 12 th June. PDG John Iriks wished to thank members for their assistance last Sunday. Meeting with Colliers this week, among the options to consider are moving the markets from Pimlico Gardens to the Village centre. The Aldi opening was a great success, club members cooked sausages from 7.30am till about 6pm, sausages and onions provided by Aldi. Ladies from Red Cross served sausages in a slice of bread (also provided by Aldi) for $2 each with the $2 going direct to Red Cross. Aldi paid our club a generous fee for providing our BBQ Trailer and labour on the day. Win Win all-round. NAIDOC Week will be during the first week of July; we will be providing BBQ for $ payment on Friday 8 th July. Currently investigating options for a club vocational visit. Have decided to delay Peel Winery until the warmer weather. Will now be a tour of the golf course then lunch on Sunday 26 th July at Marri Park Tavern. Lorraine Lucas Youth Lorraine & Mike still looking for assistance with the bread project, currently handling up to 700 loaves per week, we are able to help many disadvantaged people in Kwinana. 6 Fine Session Sergeant: PP Stephen Castelli John I: Often writes himself notes, thing to do whilst compiling a list he often thinks at the end. and a partridge in a pear tree wrote a list of things to get from Bunnings, the list ended with partridge He then could not work out when he arrived at Bunnings what the hell does partridge mean. (I only write down what I hear!!!) Editor. James S: Fined for Not wearing a tie this week. Matt W: The late award Norm Mc: The award for being early for next week!! WCE and Dockers both fined as usual. Chris O: Had his photo in the local rag, Mr Grumpy Bevan P : Doing a plate return to the kitchen. Matt W: Ian C has a picture of Matt wearing a short skirt sitting in a very undignified manner from his Rotaract days. Chris O: Actually wearing his badge tonight, excuse I just found it John I: catch it. Tried to hold up the train because Gareth was running down the platform trying to Norm Mc: South Freo won, where is the tie? Michael M: Phone calls. James S: Telling Liz that he reads the Club Visioning document every night at bed time. Max B: Was in hospital this afternoon having a couple of tests, apparently befriended a Bishop Divine Intervention or what. Chris O: Must be having eyesight problems, or do just like carrots. Eric B: Fined by Greg, we all know how Eric is such a fussy eater, well during our cruise on the Rivers I saw Eric try more things than ever before and actually liked most of them. Greg W: Fined himself for this one. Was taking mum to the doctors, felt that the ute was a little too hard for her to get in and out of, plan B, take the Peugeot. Jumped into the PUG, swiftly backed out of carport, BANG straight into the ute parked outside, double whammy We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognising and appreciating what we do have. 7 Guest Speaker: PDG Liz Westoby Introduced by PDG Bob Cooper Club Visioning Follow-up PDG Liz Westoby previously visited our club on Monday 4 th April to see how we had embraced and followed up on our Club Visioning session we held August 2014 When most members had obviously not followed the club visioning principals she arranged to come back in a few weeks to check on our progress. Liz who has championed the process said that she was disappointed with the fact that not many club had taken up the process. We had however produced a Club Visioning document some time ago which outlined the 5 year goals we had opted for Original workshop Aug 2014 previously but not followed up on. The strong message from Liz is that we should be reviewing this document at least every three months to make sure that we were carrying out the wishes laid down by the club previously. There was some spirited discussion on the benefits of such a document and how that fitted in with the culture within our club. It was also pointed out that we have had a club Standing Orders document which is amended and updated each year to reflect exactly what our club s Aims, Objectives and commitments are for the coming year. PDG Liz is steadfast in her support for Club Visioning and implored us to embrace the concept. PDG John Iriks thanked Liz for her persuasive enthusiasm in presenting her case supporting the Club Visioning Process. Polio This Week 07 th June 2016 As of the 7 June, 149 out of 155 countries and territories have submitted a switch validation report, confirming the withdrawal of topv from the immunization program. 9 A woman went to the local psych A woman went to the local psychic in hopes of contacting her dearly departed grandmother. The psychic's eyelids begin fluttering, her voice begins warbling, her hands float up above the table, and she begins moaning. Eventually, a coherent voice emanates, saying, "Granddaughter? Are you there?" The customer, wide-eyed and on the edge of her seat, responds, "Grandma? Is that you?" "Yes granddaughter, it's me." "It's really, really you, Grandma?" the woman repeats. "Yes, it's really me, granddaughter." The woman looks puzzled, "You're sure it's you, Grandma?" "Yes, granddaughter, I'm sure it's me." The woman pauses a moment, "Grandma, I have just one question for you." "Anything, my child." "When did you learn to speak English?" A man has a racehorse that never won a race.
