We wish them well and a safe trip home. Congratulations must go to the Vote Kwinana team who were stunningly successful in their efforts to convince more than twice the number of ratepayers who would normally vote in a local government election to lodge a vote against the proposed amalgamation with the City of Cockburn, yes it took many thousands of dollars which were provided by the City of Kwinana and spent very professionally by the committee and the ensuing result speaks for itself. The fact that the committee was chaired by a club member (PP Ian Critchley) and supported by many other community minded club members was coincidental. Our club was not directly involved at any stage. Some misguided opponent of the Vote Kwinana committee even went as far as to complain to Rotary International Australia claiming our Rotary Club was actively involved, totally false. It just meant that some Kwinana Rotary Club members were also very passionate about their local community and contributed on their own behalf. 2 President Mike Nella President s Pen Club Meeting 09 th February 2015 President Mike along with 5 Rockingham / Kwinana Rotaractors are in Jakarta helping a local Rotaract club with renovations to a local school. This week s meeting was held at a local Chinese Restaurant. Mike will be pleased with the Vote Kwinana result, he put in many hours of his personal time into the very successful No Campaign President Mike and five Rotaract members arrive at Perth International Airport to start their journey to Jakarta to assist a local Rotaract club with some school renovations. When you set a timetable you turn your intentions into a commitment. It s not important how long you live, what is important is how you live Complaining is a devastating disease.

Because the weather forecast was for a 40 deg. day some stall holders failed to show. Proposal is to move the markets to the shopping mall for the March markets, all the legal requirements need to be in place before then. Swimarathon 2015 due to the delay in completing renovations to the Kwinana Requatic Centre and the unavailability of a replacement venue, PP Genevieve has suggested that anyone wishing to participate in this year s event swim at a venue/location of your choice and donate. Enquiries and donations can be made either by contacting Bob Thompson ( ) or Genevieve Carr ( ) or online via City Square Markets to be held on Saturday 21 st February 2015 Members involved know who they are and the jobs they have. 9 Fine Session Sergeant PP John Wallhead No fine info Beijing Airport by night Polio this week 4 th February 2015 Over 6 months have passed since the most recent case of wild poliovirus (WPV) type 1 had onset of paralysis in Nigeria. However, at least 12 months must pass without detection of WPV, in the presence of certification quality surveillance, before Nigeria would be considered as having stopped transmission of WPV. Polio-free certification of Nigeria (and the entire WHO African region) would follow only after 3 years with high quality surveillance have passed without identifying WPV. Intensified efforts are ongoing in the country not just to eradicate WPV, but also to urgently stop the circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 outbreak which continues to affect the country. Ministers of Health, health leaders and experts from around the world convened in Geneva last week at WHO s Executive Board meeting to set global public health policies. Participants were encouraged by progress towards a polio free world yet warned that as long as the disease remains anywhere, children everywhere are at risk.

11 Rotary releases $34.8 million for polio immunization activities worldwide Female polio health workers providing the polio vaccine during the National Immunization Days in Kano Northern Nigeria. Rotary International released an additional $34.8 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, the three countries where the disease has never been stopped. The funds, whose release was announced 20 January, will be used by the World Health Organization and UNICEF for polio immunization and surveillance activities in the 10 countries, as well as to provide technical assistance in several other countries in Africa. The grants include $8.1 million for Nigeria to support its final push to eradicate the disease. Nigeria experienced a nearly 90 percent reduction in cases in 2014 compared with the previous year, and hasn't registered a new case of polio in the last six months. "Nigeria has managed an incredible feat," says Dr. Tunji Funsho, Rotary's PolioPlus chair for Nigeria. "However, now we must be more vigilant than ever, as our progress is fragile." Commitment to polio eradication from all levels of the Nigerian government has proved crucial to the country's recent progress. Disease experts are urging political leaders to maintain this focus as national elections approach next month. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, in which Rotary is a partner, made significant progress against polio in 2014 in most places. More than half of the world's cases in 2013 were the result of outbreaks in previously polio-free countries, largely caused by instability and conflict in countries including Syria, Iraq, and Somalia. The outbreaks appear to have been stopped last year following special vaccination efforts in 11 countries that reached more than 56 million children. "We are encouraged to see the tangible progress made against this disease in 2014," says Mike McGovern, chair of Rotary's International PolioPlus Committee. "However, until we eliminate polio from its final reservoirs, children everywhere are at risk from this disease. Rotary -- along with our partners -- will work hard to ensure that the world's most vulnerable children are kept safe from polio." One less promising spot in the polio eradication fight has been Pakistan, which saw an explosive outbreak totaling more than 300 cases in 2014, the most there in more than a decade. As a result, Pakistan accounted for almost 90 percent of the world's cases last year. Pakistan will receive $1.1 million of the funds that Rotary is releasing to support eradication efforts there. In addition, the grants include $6.7 million in Afghanistan, $7 million in Somalia, $3.3 million in Democratic Republic of Congo, $2.8 million in Niger, $2.5 million in Chad, $1.6 million in Cameroun, $1.1 million in Ethiopia, and $250,000 in Kenya. A total of $321,000 will provide technical assistance in Africa. To date, Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion to fight polio. Through 2018, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match 2-to-1 every dollar that Rotary commits to polio eradication (up to $35 million a year). In 2014, there were only 350 confirmed polio cases in the world, down from about 350,000 a year when the initiative began in 1988.

13 While he was visiting, my father asked for the password to our Wi-Fi. It s taped under the modem, I told him. After three failed attempts to log on, he asked, Am I spelling this right? T-A-P-E-D-U-N-D-E-R-T-H-E-M-O-D-E-M? A politician and two of his cronies, Bill and John, were fishing when their boat capsized. Bill and John started to panic because they'd seen sharks in the area. "No worries, mates," said the politician and he started to swim towards the island to get help. As he swam, John spotted the dorsal fins of two great white sharks heading straight toward the politician. Before he could yell a warning, the politician took hold of their fins and the sharks escorted him safely to shore. When the politician returned with help, John asked him how he had managed such an amazing feat. The politician answered, "Professional courtesy."
