DG STEVE HILL DG Steve Hill Welcome to a new year and I hope that everyone had a great Christmas and enjoyed the break but I have noted that most clubs are now back into the swing of things in a big way. This calendar year is significant within the district as we celebrate 90 years since Rotary came to the ACT. It is also the 50 th year of Rotaract with Canberra Rotaract club being the oldest continuing club in Australia at 47 years. Clubs throughout the district also pass significant milestones with Canberra turning 90, Moss Vale 70, Narooma 60, Tuggeranong 30, Jerrabomberra 20 and Gungahlin 10. January saw another two successful National Youth Science Forums being held in Canberra and a first in a session being held in Brisbane. My thanks and appreciation go to the District committee and in particular Debbie Whitfield the chair for her significant input into the sessions this year. NYSF is in its 35 th year and would not have happened at all if it were not for two Rotarians along with other members of the community had not started this all those years ago. Having attended the openings, alumni evenings and dinners and talking to the students, I know that every hour and cent that Rotarians spend on this program means we will be leaving our society in a much better place. Figures show that throughout Australia each year Rotarians give approximately 20,000 hours to this program. Well done all of those involved. Also in January, another hugely successful Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp was held at Greenhills, Cotter. Congratulations to Lyndall McGrath and her committee. The impact this camp has on the individuals attending is immeasurable and another pat on the back for Rotary and the influence and impact we have on the youth in assisting them with their futures. February will be a significant milestone in the District with the launch of the Canberra Burley Griffin Peace Bell project in Nara Park Canberra on the 23 rd. This will be one of just over 20 Peace Bells in the world. It has been a long project of the Burley Griffin club and is now coming to fruition. Everyone is invited to the opening and my congratulations to Michael Rabey and his team to place Rotary again in the forefront for peace. For further information, please visit their website here and/or rccbg.org Reminder that applications are open for District Governor for 2020/21 the year our new District commences. Give some thought to who you would like to lead us into this new area and submit a nomination to me. The RI Board has given final approval for the formation of the new district which as of the 1st July 2020 will come into existence with the number We are holding a Foundation Seminar on the 3 rd February at Raiders Club Kippax and the 3 rd March at Bomaderry bowling Club. Remember your club is not eligible for a District Foundation Grant unless a representative has attended a Foundation Seminar and the club has signed the MOU. Bookings please to PDG Rob Woolley. Registrations for the conference at Mittagong from 23 rd to 25 th March are open on the District Web site. Allen Cupitt and his committee have everything ready to give you a great weekend at Mittagong RSL so register now. As a result of a meeting with the organisers of the Rotary Emergency Services Community Awards and with the Commissioners of the various Emergency Services in the ACT, the awards will for this year be a combined ACT/NSW Emergency Services Awards. The launch this year will take place in Sydney on the 7th February. Due to personal reasons PDG Phil Mewett has had to resign as the District Council on Legislation Representative. Nominations have been called for amongst our PDG's as the COL rep must have served a year as a Governor. Clubs will be advised of the nominees in due course. Remember everything you do whether small or huge does have an impact on someone and does make a difference. 2

Kids in Care Appeal Four years ago John Giles from the Woden Police Station organised the police to donate presents for four children under Child Protection who would otherwise not have received a Christmas present. Christmas 2017 saw 200 children receive gifts through the support of sponsors, Rotary clubs and retailers. This Christmas there are 709 children aged up to 17 years who are identified under Child Protection although not all are in need of a gift. DG Steve Hill has motivated several Rotary Clubs to donate to this very worthy cause. Children were asked for one wish for a Christmas gift and this wish has been met in almost all cases, including a trampoline for a family of three children. The gifts will be dispersed to the relevant case managers who are responsible for the wrapping and delivery of the gifts. A truly heartwarming appeal that echoes the saying 'from little things big things grow! - Yvonne Robson 5

Everest Base Camp Trek for Rotarians I d like to tell you about two opportunities for members and clubs in your district. My club, Turramurra, is supporting an effort by Steven Plain, the son of one of our members, to climb the tallest peak in each of the seven continents, in the record time of four months. Not only that, Steven is a survivor of major spinal injury in Rotary activities are being arranged on each continent, except Antarctica where Steven is currently climbing Mt Vinson. in Australia, Steven will be climbing Mt Kosciuszko* in early March. We re teaming with RC Cooma to take children in wheelchairs to the top of Mt Kosciuszko mainly to give them the thrill of the experience but also as a fundraiser. in Asia, Steven will be climbing Mt Everest in late April. We re teaming with Rotary in Nepal and a professional tour operator to offer a trek for Rotarians and friends to Everest Base Camp**. Their arrival at Base Camp will coincide with Steven s ascent of Everest. The tour also includes opportunities to experience several of Rotary s inspiring humanitarian programs in Nepal. Beneficiaries include SpinalCure Australia and Wheelchairs for Kids. We re very excited about these events and, with the support of D9685 Governor, Peter Ward, I d like to ask whether you would be willing to promote them to members in your district, probably via your enews. To simplify the process, I have attached an image you may wish to use, as well as some suggested text. Thank you in anticipation of your assistance and if there are any further details we can provide, or suggestions that you or your team would like to offer, please don t hesitate to contact the project s team leader, Brian Plain at bplain@bigpond.com. Kind regards Rob PS. I have met some of you previously when I rode my bicycle from Cairns to Melbourne, raising funds for EndPolioNow. Hello again! * Mt Kosciuszko is not officially one of the Seven Summits (for mountaineers, it s more of a hill than a mountain!) but as an Aussie, Steven will be adding it to his list. ** The trek to Everest Base Camp involves no mountaineering and is described as 15 days of steady-pace trekking for 4-6 hours a day, with gradual uphill. 15 members to the Annual Fund NEW THEMES AND LOGOS Paul Harris suggested that Rotary is a model which nations should follow. Barry says that it 'is not only a model, but an inspiration. It shows us what is possible, inspires us to reach for it, and gives us a path to act, and to BE THE INSPIRATION to our world'. I don't think I can re-invent the wheel on that quote Margaret Hass DGE Look here for the full set of theme description and RI President Barry Rassin wants Rotary members to Be the Inspiration 5

New District!!!! As you are aware, we will be creating a new Rotary District that comes into being on the 1 st July This District will encompass the current geographic boundaries of Districts 9700 and Recently our Rotary International Director, Noel Trevaskis stated: There is an urgent need for change both at the Club and the District levels. Clubs need to find new ways of attracting and retaining members and Districts need to focus their efforts on providing the best possible support mechanisms to Clubs in their crucial endeavour to grow and strengthen Rotary. Larger and better resourced Districts are seen as a significant way of providing this support to Clubs. These are exciting times for the two Districts as we are able to start a new district with a blank canvas and as long as we abide by Legislation and RI Code of Policies we are able to create an entity that still caters to the needs of our current programs but is able to look to the future for Rotary in our region. As a result of meetings within the leadership group of both districts and after consultation with Rotary International we have formed a Transition Management Team consisting of District Governors George Weston (9700), Steve Hill (9710), Past District Governors Irene Jones(9700) and Bob Greeney(9710) to oversee the formation of this new district between now and 1 st July After the selection of the District Governor for 2020/21 to be held in March 2018, the new Governor will join this transition Team. As forming a new district is a large project this transition team will be implementing Focus groups that will be charged with advising how the new district will do business under the Avenues of Service within RI, its governance 6

including constitutional matters, rules and bylaws, membership and other matters that are needed. We are under no illusion that without the assistance of every Rotarian within both Districts the new model we are looking at forming will not happen. To this end we are asking that Rotarians assist us by sending us ideas and thoughts on what you believe the new district should be doing to fulfil its main role of being there as a resource for the clubs in doing good in the world. Due to the larger geographical area of the new district, and to assist further the District Governor, the position of Area Governors will be created. Area Governors will each be responsible for an area containing no more than 15 Rotary Clubs plus any Rotaract or Interact Clubs that may fall within those areas. They will replace the Assistant Governors and have responsibility within their area of representing the District Governor at official club visits and ensuring training and other pertinent matters occur appropriately within their Area. A new Area Governor manual has been written by DG Steve Hill and approved by RI Director Noel. This manual will be available soon on our current District websites. The position of Assistant Governors will no longer exist within our new district. A nominating committee will select Area Governors along the same lines as the District Governor is selected and will receive training at the zone institute that is held annually within Australia. The position of Area Governor will be a two-year position and will receive funding from the Governor s allowance issued by Rotary International. An Area Governor must have been a Rotarian for 5 years and held the position of President in at least one club. Some other questions that have arisen already because of the idea of a new District: Q. What impact will it have on our annual District Conference? A. With increased members and more major towns/cities it will open up opportunities for increased friendships and receptive visits. Q. Where will our District training and development programs be held? A. That will be the decision of the elected District leaders of the day; there maybe one large session or several throughout the District. 7

Q. What impact will the new District have on our District youth programs e.g. YEP, RYLA? A. You will now have a larger source of youth talent and Alumni to draw from, flexibility in training venues, and the opportunity to duplicate programs through the year in different areas. Q. How will our District governor be elected? A. All qualified members throughout the District will have the same opportunity as is now practised. This last question is one of the most important tasks that has to be undertaken very soon. Notification for expressions of interest from Rotarians to nominate for the District Governor for 2020/21 will be distributed before or on 10 th December to all clubs. It is imperative that we select the right person for the job in the new District. The role of the District Governor is changing to Administrative oversight of the District Board and the District programs. Travel to visit clubs will be limited: consequently distance need not be a factor in any Rotarians nomination for DG. We are asking every Rotarian to give considerable thought as to whom they would like to see nominated for this position and to ensure they bring this to the notice of their current District Governor. The selections will take place on the 10 th March The RI requirement for the District Governor is that he/she has to have been a Rotarian for 7 years and a Past President of a club. 20 Guest Speakers D9710 Website - Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin Contact Name: Diabetes ACT Message: ianp@diabetesnsw.com.au 22 January 2018 Dear Supporter Diabetes is the fastest growing and most expensive chronic health issue facing Australia today. There are currently 1.2 million Australians living with diabetes which costs the country $14bn annually. On top of this, it is estimated that a further 500,000 Australians are living with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Diabetes NSW & ACT is a member based charity dedicated to helping people living with, or at risk of diabetes, their families and carers. We do this by raising awareness about diabetes and providing education, support programs and services promoting good health and wellbeing for those living with the condition. Diabetes is a serious chronic condition. If left untreated, or not managed well, it can damage the vascular system and organs within the body leading to health complications like heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and limb amputation. As General Manager here in the ACT, part of my role is to raise awareness of diabetes across the ACT region, so that people understand the importance of an early diagnosis and get the help and support they need to live well. I have found that one of the most effective ways to do this is via short group presentations and question and answer sessions and I would like to offer this opportunity to your organisation. Last year I spoke at 18 service clubs and 22 community events and consistently received feedback that the event was not only helpful but also helped increase the knowledge of diabetes and its impact on the individual, their families and the community. If you are interested in hosting a presentation for your group or organisation, or would like more information about the work of Diabetes NSW & ACT please contact me on ianp@diabetesnsw.com.au or Yours sincerely Ian Peters General Manager Diabetes NSW and ACT ACT Region Rachel Torrealba is seeking Guest Speaker appointments.
