4 FROM THE DEAN Welcome to Calgary! On behalf of the Haskayne School of Business and the University of Calgary, I am very honoured to welcome over 600 students, alumni, faculty members, administrators and partners to JDC West 208. This year s JDC West theme embracing diversity is especially relevant as we all look toward the future of business. Like many other Canadian cities, Calgary is changing to embrace diversity in our economy. Haskayne is closely aligned to this shift, offering unique undergraduate and graduate programs in real estate development, entrepreneurship, advanced leadership and sustainable energy development. Diversity of thought, experience and culture makes our universities, and business schools, places where big ideas can come to life and bold leaders can thrive. Diverse perspectives enrich the way we teach, research and learn. While enjoying the power of teams and the thrill of friendly competition, I encourage you to also take time this weekend to reflect on how diversity plays a role in your education and experience at JDC West. JIM DEWALD Congratulations on your dedication and effort that has led to your participation in JDC West. You ve spent countless hours in preparation. The skills you ve acquired, knowledge you ve gained and relationships you ve built will serve you well in your professional career. Good luck to you, and to all who are participating this weekend! Jim Dewald Dean, Haskayne School of Business 3

5 FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Welcome to another exciting installment of Western Canada s largest business competition! JDC West Business Competition is in its 3th year, and we are very excited that the competition is hosted this year for the first time at the Haskayne School of Business in Calgary, Alberta. The Board of Directors of JDC West has witnessed first-hand the efforts of an incredibly dedicated group of students and alumni on this year s Organizing Committee. Not only has this team contributed an extraordinary number of hours to planning the competition, but they also consistently represent the values of JDC West within their local community and regionally. Congratulations to Mitch Orr and Katie Tikkanen on assembling and leading such a committed and enthusiastic team over the past year. Delegates attending the competition this year are sure to feel the energy that you have all invested coming through in their own experiences over this weekend. Delegates are, of course, the reason that the Organizing Committee invests their efforts into hosting this competition each year. Without the delegates attending, this weekend obviously wouldn t amount to much of an experience for anyone involved. Thank you all for choosing to make JDC West such a large part of your lives over the past months, and good luck in the coming days of competition. JON JOSEPHSON Over the course of the next few days, you will have many chances to demonstrate to yourself just how much personal and professional growth you have achieved in preparing for the JDC West competition. As returning delegates already know, and as first-time delegates are about to find out, the JDC West Business Competition weekend can have a transformational impact on your personal life, as well as your career path. Take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves over the weekend to make new connections with your peers and network with potential employers at the Corporate Showcase. If and when you come away from this JDC West weekend wanting more, I encourage you to remain involved with the organization. Locally, you can take on the role of team coach, captain or faculty advisor. Down the road, a role on the JDC West Organizing Committee or Board might be what you re looking for. Even if you don t personally become further involved in the competition, encourage your current and future employers to acknowledge that you and your fellow JDC West alumni are part of their success; perhaps they can expand on that success by contributing to the competition as either a judge or a sponsor. Finally, congratulations on all of the successes and all of the growth that you have achieved in anticipation of this weekend. On behalf of the JDC West Business Competition, welcome to JDC West 208! Jon Josephson Chair, JDC West Board of Directors 4
