2 Growing Rural Tourism Conference February 20-22, Camrose, Alberta Sponsorship Proposal The Growing Rural Tourism Conference is an initiative of the Camrose Regional Exhibition. The 18th annual conference will take place at the Camrose Regional Exhibition on February 20-22, Tourism is Alberta s third largest industry, ranking behind the Petro-Chemical Industry and Agriculture. It is estimated that there are currently 150,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal jobs in this industry. While this is a very positive position for the industry, the benefits generated by the industry have been traditionally accrued by locations on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, and by the major cities of Alberta. Few of these benefits have been realized by the rural communities that populate the rest of Alberta - until now! Rural communities in Alberta and across Canada have begun looking towards tourism as a viable industry to diversify their local economies. The Growing Rural Tourism Conference brings together groups who have embraced innovative Tourism strategies and partnerships, and those looking at how they might bring new sources of revenue and employment to their own communities. Renowned Rural Tourism experts and participants from a broad cross-section will share successes, challenges, and ideas for future growth. Comments from last year s participants indicated that the conference was a powerful tool in initiating strategic tourism planning. 3 The conference committee looks forward to hosting over 200 delegates from across western Canada with the majority being from Alberta. To understand issues applicable to specific regions as they apply to Rural Tourism Development To Build Tourism Champions in rural regions and to recognize them To understand the impact of tourism on municipalities To develop viable marketing options for rural tourism ideas Introduce diverse cultural areas of tourism, the entrepreneurship challenge, Indigenous Relations, Culinary tourism and expanding more in Objectives Increase the recognition and awareness of tourism successes in Alberta. To build knowledgeable tourism leaders who act as a catalyst in their communities. To recognize and showcase the role that communities play in the rural tourism industry. To engage conference participants in the rural tourism planning process. To provide both general and targeted networking opportunities. 5 Entrepreneurial Challenge Sponsorship Opportunity The Entrepreneurship Challenge will feature tourism entrepreneurs who have a new product or experience that they want to develop and market. Operators will be required to submit their ideas with a business plan for execution to the committee. The top ten will be selected to present to judges. They will compete for one of three product development awards. The competition will be held at the 2018 Growing Rural Tourism Conference. Challenge Goals and Objectives 1. Encourage tourism entrepreneurs to develop new and/or innovative products or experiences. 2. Increase the attendance of tourism operators at the Growing Rural Tourism Conference. 3.
