1 2015 Conference 8-10 October Opal Cove Resort, Coffs Harbour, NSW Conference Program and Information Pack The Australian Institute of Embalming Pty Ltd (AIE) is the premier embalming organisation in Australia and South East Asia. The AIE prides itself on maintaining a membership with only the highest professional standards. The Annual AIE Conference is the highlight of the organisation s social and educational calendar. It is an opportunity for our Members to share information and create networks. It is also an opportunity for Members to get to know the products and companies involved in the Funeral and Embalming Industries. The program this year will again deliver educational embalming specific topics by a number of keynote speakers and will include workshops. At the AIE, our aim is to foster ongoing relationships between our Members and the companies involved in the industry. This year we are introducing an online booking system through Australia Wide Conferences for registration and accommodation. This is the preferred option for all bookings to attend the conference however printable PDF forms of the registration, accommodation and credit card authorisation forms are available to download as well from this site. 6 Conference Speakers Jeff Chancellor Our main guest speaker will be, CFSP from the United States. is a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer with over 35 years practical experience. Melissa grew up in funeral service; her parents the late Edward C. and Gail R. Johnson had extensive funeral service education commitments and had an active shipping service that she continues today. She has conducted more than 100 presentations nationally and internationally on a variety of subjects including practical embalming demonstrations, disaster response, weapons of mass destruction, restorative art, history of embalming, infectious disease and shipping of human remains. Jeff serves as the Director of Education, Training and Research for the Eckels Company. He is a qualified embalmer, funeral director, crematory operator and a certified Funeral Celebrant. Jeff began his career in pre-need sales and graduated first in his class from the Alberta School of Mortuary Science in Jeff s career experience includes managing a high volume mortuary, owner of a safety training company, instructing at the Center for Funeral Service Education at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada and at the Pacific Center For Mortuary Studies in Cebu, Philippines, as an embalming lecturer and demonstrator, as an international disaster response team member and as a consultant to funeral service businesses. Jennifer Burge I have worked for Tobin Brothers for just over 20 years and have been in the mortuary for 18 years, qualifying as an Embalmer in September During my funeral life, I have served on the AIE Board as well as having the privilege of holding the position of the first female Chairman of AIE. As part of my role with Tobin Brothers, I have helped to write and deliver Certificate IV in Embalming, as well as presenting education sessions to medical staff, clergy and pastoral care workers. I was involved in the repatriation of people who had died as a result of the Bali bombings, and recently had the opportunity to travel to Rotterdam to assist with the processing of property from a recent plane accident. I was fortunate enough to work in Japan for 6 months, which was different and challenging. Ann Darley-Collis Ann has worked in the funeral industry since 1998 and is currently employed by Le Pine Funerals, Glen Waverley, Victoria as one of their full time practising Embalmers/Mortuary Supervisor. In 2005 Ann won the Castaldi Scholarship and was appointed as an AIE Observer in 2009 and elected to the AIE Board of Directors in Ann has special interests in embalming and reconstruction techniques as well as grief and ethnic cultures.

7 Lukas McLaughlin Lukas McLaughlin started in the funeral industry at 17 years old, while arranging a family funeral. He started his training with James Brown & Sons (of the Cooperative) in Belfast, who served both the Protestant and Catholic communities. He qualified with the BIE in 2012, and then worked for Dominick Healy & Sons, where every deceased went home for the wake, and were embalmed within 8 hours of death. They were also responsible for a lot of high profile Republican funerals, making the experience very different to that of Australian culture. He has been working at Bowra & O Dea in Perth since October Andrew Mitchell Andrew has been in the funeral industry since 1988 and is employed by Hansen & Cole Funerals (part of InvoCare Australia). He qualified as an Embalmer in 1996 and was made a fellow of the AIE in As a practicing embalmer Andrew also looks after the mortuary operations for Hansen & Cole while still maintaining an active role in all other areas of the funeral business. He is also a member of Kenyon International Disaster Services and has been involved in deployments to Bali, Thailand, Jogjakarta, and Christmas Island. John Tidman Having qualified in Embalming and Funeral Directing in 1982/1984 John has promoted the embalming profession in WA by fulfilling the roles as an Examiner, State Co-ordinator and Board member for a number of years. He has also supported numerous community organisations such as State DVI executive, Ethic committees of King Edward and Princess Memorial Children's Hospitals, President and Executive Member of Local Chambers of Commerce and Industry, District Governors Group representative of Rotary, Chairman of Willetton Senior High School, Vice Chair of Canning College, and President of a State Representative Sports Club. He is currently active with his funeral consultancy and serving as Manager of Australasia/Pacific for Blake Emergency Services. Paul Blades Paul is a third generation family member of Harrison Funerals Est Paul worked full time at Harrison Funerals for 13 years and during this time he obtained a Certificate IV in Mortuary Science. During his employment at Harrison Funerals he was deployed to the Sanglah Public Hospital after the Bail bombings with Kenyon International Emergency Services for a total of 4 ½ weeks on two separate deployments. In 2007 Paul was deployed to the Kenya Airways crash in Cameroon, West Africa with Blake Emergence Services (still an active member). Paul spent 3 weeks working out of the temporary mortuary at the local hospital. During this time he became the sales manager for Genelyn Embalming Products, whilst at Genelyn he was involved in research and development of new and existing embalming products.
