1 Dear Members, AIE Conference October 2017 On behalf of the AIE Board of Directors, I would like to extend a warm invitation to AIE & AFDA Members, staff and industry colleagues to attend the 2017 Australian Institute of Embalming Conference which will be held at Bayview on the Park Hotel, Melbourne, Victoria. As this will be the 21 st Conference year for AIE we thought it was appropriate that the Conference theme is Coming of Age. During the two days of the Conference, you will hear best practices of highly experienced speakers, recommendations for tackling your daily challenges and be proactively involved in all the education sessions. Delegates can meet old friends and colleagues and create new relationships. For everyone, it is an opportunity to visit Melbourne, and to spend some time enjoying new sights and experiences. The social program includes an opening night dinner during which the winner of this year s AIE Scholarship will be announced, a very special mystery dinner and of course on the last night there will be the traditional Chairman s Ball. If you have never been to an AIE Conference or have not attended in a while, I encourage you to make plans to join us this year. 5 Conference Speakers Joshua E. Allen, CFSP Embalmer and Post-mortem Reconstructive Specialist As an embalmer and native to the state of Pennsylvania, Joshua has devoted his career to exploring ways to improve the quality of modern embalming skills and encouraging others to raise the standards of embalming in the funeral profession. Following his education, he became a licensed funeral director in Pennsylvania, Joshua then began the process of honing his skills in embalming, after attending the Fountain National Academy of Professional Embalming Skills in Springfield, MO. At this moment in life, he began to understand and personally see the healthy benefits for families traveling through the experience of losing a loved one. Through changing the way he cared for the deceased as an embalmer, he is able to provide a positive viewing and memory for families and the public. In 2015, Joshua was awarded a certificate of achievement, by Fountain National Academy. He was the 38th embalmer to ever have completed the required 130 contact hours of specialized education in 25 years of Fountain National Academy history. In 2016, at the 4th annual FNA International Embalming and Reconstructive Surgery Conference, he offered a keynote speech to embalmers from 26 states and 7 countries. At this conference, he was also awarded the Distinguished Professional Service Medallion, by FNA founder, Vernie, R. Fountain for his continued advancements of his professional embalming skills. He was also awarded the recognition of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner by the Academy of Professional Service Practice. Joshua is a member of the CPFDA, PFDA, NFDA, the former ASE, the AIE and a life member of the APFSP. Associate Professor Carl Winskog Carl Winskog is an associate professor of Pathology at The University of Adelaide and trained as a Forensic Pathologist and Specialist in Forensic Medicine at The National Board of Forensic Medicine in Sweden where he was first in the world to use and implement CT scanning in forensic autopsies. In 2006 he was appointed as Head of the Pathology Section at the Forensic Sciences Centre in Barbados and during he was Forensic Pathologist for The European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo investigating war crimes committed during the armed conflict in the Balkans He has also worked for the Government of Sweden, Government of Barbados, Government of South Australia, The Commonwealth of Dominica, The Government of Antigua and Barbuda, The Independent State of Samoa and the International police agency, Interpol, in relation to identification of disaster victims and criminal investigations

6 Jared Friesen Jared began his funeral service career in 1993 at Wiebe Funeral Home in southern Manitoba, Canada. Graduating from the Western College of Funeral Service in 1996 he worked at various funeral homes throughout western Canada before settling in Japan in 2004 where he is currently employed at Yakumo/Genelyn Japan. Jared is an embalming supervisor/educator and distributor for Genelyn Embalming Chemicals in Japan. He has attended 15 Dodge seminars and as well as the first two Fountain National Academy courses over the years and looks forward to continuing his education in the near future attending the reconstruction courses at FNA. Jennifer Burge Jennifer has worked for Tobin Brothers for just over 20 years and has been in the mortuary for 19 years, qualifying as an Embalmer in September During my funeral life, I have served on the AIE Board as well as having the privilege of holding the position of the first female Chairman of AIE. As part of my role with Tobin Brothers, I have helped to write and deliver Certificate IV in Embalming, as well as presenting education sessions to medical staff, clergy and pastoral care workers. I was involved in the repatriation of people who had died as a result of the Bali bombings, and recently had the opportunity to travel to Rotterdam to assist with the processing of property from a recent plane accident. Marcus Hill Jeff Chancellor Marcus Hill has been working in the Funeral Industry for the past 30 years, having qualified with a distinction in Embalming in He has worked in Funeral Operations, Managing Funeral Homes, working as a State Learning and Development Regional Manager, which covered all of QLD and Northern NSW, in addition Marcus also has delivered training in Tasmania and New Zealand and now currently is employed as a Funeral General Manager in North Queensland. Specialising in Health and Safety and Manual Handling, Marcus has real life experience and teaches what he know s best. Marcus received a Master Funeral Directors Award in Jeff serves as the Director of Education, Training and Research for the Eckels Company. He is a qualified embalmer, funeral director, crematory operator and a certified Funeral Celebrant. Jeff began his career in pre-need sales and graduated first in his class from the Alberta School of Mortuary Science in Jeff s career experience includes managing a high volume mortuary, owner of a safety training company, instructing at the Center for Funeral Service Education at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada and at the Pacific Center For Mortuary Studies in Cebu, Philippines, as an embalming lecturer and demonstrator, as an international disaster response team member and as a consultant to funeral service businesses.
