2 2017 Thunderbird District Camporee Welcome to the 2017 Camporee Events & Scoring Guide! Our team has worked hard to bring you a mix of traditional and new events that we hope your Scouts find exciting and fun. With Leading the Team as our theme, you will see a greater emphasis on the Patrol Method this year. This means that, in addition to our normal timed skill competitions, our event judges will be watching particularly for VISIBLE LEADERSHIP and SCOUT SPIRIT within each patrol. To compete in Camporee events, a patrol must be comprised of a minimum of five registered Boy Scouts or Venturing Scouts. Smaller patrols may be combined under one name for the purposes of competition. We ve also included plenty of unique events in which teams and individuals can participate in the afternoon. Morning Events The morning events are grouped into three Challenge Areas. In each Challenge Area, a patrol must complete three tasks that are part of a scenario. Each event in a Challenge Area will be timed, and bonus points will be added for signs of Scout Spirit and Visible Leadership by a presumed Patrol Leader. Best time = 50 POINTS 2nd best time = 30 POINTS 3rd best time = 20 POINTS Scout Spirit = up to 10 POINTS Visible Leadership = up to 10 POINTS

3 1st-3rd Places for each event will be recognized at campfire, and one Patrol will win the Challenge Award for that area (based on the total number of points earned in the three events. A patrol will not likely have enough time to complete all three Challenge Areas (9 events), but to be eligible for the Thunderbird Award, they have to successfully complete at least two of the morning Challenge Areas (6 events). Afternoon Events The afternoon events are designed to give individuals and patrols the chance to participate in some activities that they may not have seen before. At each of the eight stations, participating Scouts will have the opportunity to identify their patrol, which will then receive an additional 10 POINTS for having at least one Scout to participate in that event. The maximum number of points a patrol may earn for participating in a particular event is ten. Patrols may send representatives to participate in as many events as time allows, but they must participate in the team events as a patrol. Social Media Scavenger Hunt (8 AM - 4 PM) This event requires that the participating Scout has earned a currently charged CyberChip appropriate to his or her grade level. The Scout must also have the signed permission of a parent AND unit leader to bring to Camporee a device capable of posting to a social media account (Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook ONLY). Permission forms can be found in the Leader s Guide. To participate, Scouts may pick up the scavenger hunt list at morning flag on Saturday. Throughout the time period of the event, the Scout should post photos of the requested items, people, or events with the hashtag #Tbirds558 AND the name of the participating Scout s patrol. Event names should be identified in the post, but the naming people is NOT allowed.

4 The following rules will apply to this unique event: Participating Scouts must meet the age requirements required by the user agreement of that social media service. All postings must be in line with the Scout Oath and Law. Identifying people (by tagging usernames OR directly by a given name is NOT allowed). One-to-one communication between Scouts and adult leaders is NOT allowed. An event judge will monitor the three social media services throughout the day using the event hashtag ( #TbirdRocks). ONE participation point will be given for each item captured and posted in the manner described. A patrol may earn up to 10 POINTS for this event. Violations of these rules or of the BSA Social Media Guidelines (link below) will be reported and will disqualify the Patrol from competition. For more information about using social media in the Scouting program, go to Campsite Inspections Our District Commissioner Staff will visit your campsite sometime during the day. Please take this opportunity to get to know your Commissioner better! Offer him or her a chair and some coffee! These volunteers are great resources to our District and to your troop. Points will be awarded using the Campsite Inspection Form found in the Leader s Guide. All patrols in a unit can received up to 10 POINTS (600 points on the form will be divided by 60 to convert it to a 10-point scale).

5 EVENT DESCRIPTIONS CHALLENGE AREA 1 1. BOW SAW RELAY - Pairs of Scouts sprint from a starting line to a log propped on a support. One Scout secures the log while the other Scout safely cuts a 2 disc off the end of it. When the disc hits the ground, the team sprints back to tag the next pair until 4 discs have been cut. Materials provided: bow saw, leather gloves, eye protection, 2-4 thick log 2. STRETCHER RELAY - While at a climbing activity, one of your patrol members has fallen and injured his shoulder. Using first aid skills and any materials in the area (or brought by your patrol), immobilize the injured Scout s shoulder, build a simple stretcher, and safely transport the Scout to the next challenge. Dropping the injured will result in returning to the starting line (timekeeping will not stop). Materials provided: 1 large cravats, 2 long spars, a tarp 3. LIZZAGATOR - Finally, your patrol must transport your still-injured Scout across a swamp using the Lizzagator. The injured Scout may not use his immobilized arm for fear of injuring it (and your score) further. Touching the ground with anything other than a spar will result in returning to the starting line (timekeeping will not stop). Materials provided: 6 spars, sheet of plywood, 3-4 barrels

6 CHALLENGE AREA 2 1. REMOTE CLOVE HITCH - Your patrol must work together to secure a long rope to a tree using a clove hitch. However, there are deadly fire ants around the base of the tree, keeping you 10 feet from it. Materials provided: 50 rope 2. LAVA BRIDGE - Your patrol continues to face challenges as you attempt to cross an expanse of molten lava. Supports for a bridge are visible, but the planks are gone! You will need to rebuild the bridge by laying boards to connect the supports to get your patrol to safety. Touching the ground with your anything except the plank carried will result in returning the board you are standing on to the beginning of the crossing. Materials provided: five 2 x6 planks of different lengths, seven stationary cinder blocks (bridge supports) 3. CROCODILE CROSSING - Your patrol must cross a pit of vicious crocodiles who haven t been fed since last camporee! You will need to lash an A-frame walker using a shear lashing at the top and square lashings to secure the crossbar. Near the top you will need attach two long guylines, and at each bottom corner you will attach two more guy lines (each using two half hitches). The patrol will then stand the walker upright and one brave Scout climb onto the crossbar and walk your gadget across the pit while other patrol members control each guy line. 7 CHALLENGE AREA 3 1. FINDING YOUR WAY - Your patrol is trekking toward its remote campsite. You have only been given a map and directions to specific waypoints. You must locate each waypoint, where you will be given a challenge question based on the principles of Tread Lightly! and Leave No Trace. Answer incorrectly, and you might hit a delay or lose your way entirely! Materials provided: map, compass bearings & GPS coordinates Materials needed: compass 2. BLIND SHELTER BUILDING - Your patrol has finally arrived at your remote campsite! Your Scoutmaster is so thrilled to rest that he wants to preserve the moment with a photo. Unfortunately, his old-tech camera flash overcharges and blinds each member of your patrol with the lone exception of your patrol leader (who was looking down, shaking his head in disbelief). Your Scoutmaster has lain down in exhaustion while your mostly-blind patrol is left to erect a dining fly before the threatening rains move in. Materials provided: tarp, eight ropes (guylines), two trek poles, four stakes, bandanas (blindfolds) 3. TO BUILD A FIRE - Even though your patrol now has shelter, some of your patrol members are chilled from the rain. Using the materials provided, build a fire sufficient enough to burn through a string suspended 18 above the pit., time reductions explained on next page Materials provided: fire pit, tinder, kindling, matches, flint & steel

8 Camporee Fire Starting/Burn A String Scoring Method This is a timed event to see which patrol is fastest at burning a string. For scoring, the time will be converted to points based on the table below. Three minutes are deducted from the patrol's time if a primitive method is used (so it's possible to finish in negative time). Bonus points are also added to the patrol's score for using a primitive method, having scout spirit, an enthusiastic patrol yell, and a patrol flag. All incendiary materials are provided. Scoring System: Time in Minutes Points If you use any primitive method for starting your fire, THREE MINUTES will be deducted from your total minutes. -3:00 to -2: :29 to -2: :59 to -1: BONUS POINTS: -1:29 to -1: Bonus Points for using primitive methods = 50-0:59 to -0: :29 to 0: :01 to 0: DEDUCTED POINTS: 0:31 to 1: :01 to 1:30 1:31 to 2: Matches Used Points Off 2:01 to 2: * 0 2:31 to 3: * 0 3:01 to 3: :31 to 4: :01 to 4: :31 to 5: :01 to 5: :31 to 6: :01 to 6: :31 to 7: :01 to 7: :31 to 8: :01 to 8:30 8:31 to 9: :01 to 9:30 9:31 to 10: Two "free" matches will be given. Each additional match over two will deduct 5 points from your total. 10: If your fire burns to the point where the score keeper thinks you need an extra bucket then you can buy an extra bucket of wood for two minutes added to your time.

9 Team & Individual Events (1:30-4:30pm) 1. Multi-way Tug-of-War - Bring your patrol to compete against two three other patrols...at the SAME TIME. or 2. Human Foosball - Come enjoy the beloved table-top competition by putting your team into the action! ( No shrinking required) 3. Rubber Chicken Volleyball - Who says chickens can t fly? Each patrol will need two pairs of players on the court to compete in some friendly fowl play. 4. Gaga Ball - Enter our pit if you dare: This cross between handball and dodgeball will really keep you hopping! Sure to be the most exciting addition to Camp Currier this year, our new Gaga Pit will be the center of attention.

10 5. Tomahawk Throw Down - Wait, only throw down range! It takes a steady wrist and and eagle eye to stick an axe in our targets. 6. Action Archery - How good are you with a bow? Good enough to hit a flying disc? Comedown to the Action Archery Range to test your bow skills. 5. Crate Stacking - Thunderbird is proud to bring another first to Camp Currier! How high can you climb by stacking milk crates on top of each other? As high until gravity takes over! Note: a signed Currier C.O.P.E. Permission form is required for this activity (found in the Leader s Guide ). 8. Giant s Ladder - If you re not too tired from climbing crates, pair up with a friend and ascend our Giant s Ladder. 12 2017 Camporee Scoring At-a-Glance (AKA How does my patrol compete for the big prize?) Points will be totaled from the following activities. The patrol with the greatest total of points will be declared the 2017 Thunderbird Patrol. Morning Events Must complete at least TWO of the three Challenge Areas (6 events) For each event, best time earns 50 points; 2nd best time earns 30 points; 3rd best time earns 20 points. For each event, up to 10 bonus points for Patrol Spirit (flag, cheer, etc.) and up to 10 bonus points for Visible Leadership may be earned. Possible number of points earned for one event is Possible number of points earned in one Challenge Area is It IS mathematically possible for a patrol NOT to place first in any event and still win the Challenge Area. It IS mathematically possible for a patrol NOT to win a Challenge Area and still win Thunderbird Patrol. Social Media Scavenger Hunt Up to 10 points earned toward overall score (1 point for each item on list - to be given at Saturday morning flag) Afternoon Events Maximum of 10 points earned for each event in which your patrol participates (whether team or individual) Patrol must be identified at event station Top participants or team will be identified at campfire, but this has no bearing on overall score for Thunderbird Patrol Campsite Inspections Maximum of 10 points earned toward Thunderbird Patrol (Inspection score divided by 60) Best campsite (top score of 600 points) will be recognized at campfire
