2 Introduction to the Camporee The 2015 Rock n Roll Camporee focuses on basic scout skills and the patrol method, with classic camporee events that emphasize teamwork, as well as individual skills. Troops should prepare for the camporee by practicing scouting fundamentals knots and lashings, first aid, proper camping techniques, skills that a scout learns on the path to First Class. There are a series of events planned to test your patrol as a team. Introduction to Leave No Trace Leave-No-Trace is a comprehensive approach to living and behaving in the outdoors, which encompasses not just camping, but also hiking, backpacking, and even just going to the park for an afternoon. The 2015 Rock n Roll Camporee will follow the seven principles of the Leave No Trace code. These principles are: * Plan Ahead and Prepare * Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces * Dispose of Waste Properly * Leave What You Find * Minimize Campfire Impacts * Respect Wildlife * Be Considerate of Other Visitors Apply these principles as you enjoy your weekend at Kensington Metropark, and pack out what you carry in, stay on trails, use the established fire pits, and respect others around you. Further information on Leave No Trace can be found in the Scout Handbook, at the BSA web site ( and at the Leave No Trace website ( The Outdoor Code As an American I will do my best to- Be clean in my outdoor manners Be careful with fire Be considerate in the outdoors and Be conservation-minded. Oath of the Rock n Roll Camporee I promise to do my duty to god and my country, To obey the scout law, to help other people at all times, And keep myself physically strong, morally straight, and mentally awake.

4 IMPORTANT INFORMATION ATTENTION: SCOUTMASTER & SR. PATROL LEADER This manual explains Troop and Patrol participation, the registration procedure, the schedule of activities, the patrol events, and the expectations for Patrol Evaluations. Troop Records A roster of those Scouts and Leaders in attendance at the Camporee should be turned into the Camporee Headquarters on Friday Evening. Med Forms Part A and B required for all scouts and leaders. Turn in at registration. We will check to make sure all your scouts have a form on file, and then return them to you for safe keeping. We must make sure you have them, but in no way want to keep them as they belong in your troops hands. Patrol Honors Score sheets and the scoring system will be discussed during the Friday night SM and SPL meeting. Any questions should be brought up in front of the whole group so we all have accurate understanding of the answers. PREPARATION: Your Troop and Patrols will derive the greatest benefit from the Camporee by preparing for it. The requirements for each event are clearly described in this Manual. At the next Patrol Leaders Council meeting, review the Manual with your Leadership Corps and Patrol Leaders. Each Patrol Leader should have a copy. Your Leadership Corps should conduct demonstrations and provide instruction at troop meetings. The Patrols should practice the skills they have learned in the meetings. BEFORE THE CAMPOREE: Prior to the Camporee, your troop should prepare for the camporee at meetings and on camping trips. Your Patrol should practice the Patrol Method and prepare for the events described in this Manual. REGISTRATION: Boy Scouts and Venture crews can begin to arrive at 5pm Friday October 16 th. Please send your troop representative to the Camporee HQ to register. Make sure to bring Med Forms with you. HQ will tell you which campsite your troop is assigned to. We will allow no more than TWO trucks and trailers on each troop campsite. All other vehicles need to park in the assigned parking area and scouts and scouters need to pack their gear into their campsites. It s the same idea as summer camp, but not nearly as big of a camp. Webelos Leaders and Webelos Scouts can begin to arrive at 9 am on Saturday October 17 th. Webelos leaders need to register at Camporee HQ and bring Med Forms for all attending Webelos scouts. Cars will be allowed on Webelos Hill to unload and set up their campsites, BUT all cars and trucks need to be off Webelos Hill by 5pm and parked in the assigned parking area.

5 PATROLS: Scouting works best when the Troop's members are divided into Patrols. The optimum number of boys in a Patrol is 6-8. No Patrol at the Camporee should have more than 8 members. Each troop's Patrol structure should be formed before the Camporee and each Patrol should practice for the events as a unit. Some activities are designed for Patrols and the most successful Patrols will be the ones who have practiced together. Try to avoid mixing scouts from different Patrols at the Camporee, as that reduces the time to develop the teamwork used in the Patrol Method. The exception will be the Ga Ga Tournament. Patrols are encouraged to show their patrol spirit by carrying their patrol flag to events and sharing their patrol yells. UNIFORMS: Scout uniforms will not be required during the camporee events, but part of the scout spirit is the uniform, and scouts are encouraged to wear scouting-related shirts during the day. Uniforms are required at campwide assemblies (such as the flag ceremonies and the arena show). Please wear your full uniform for these gatherings. PARKING AND TRAFFIC: Kensington Group Camp only has a one lane bridge that connects campsites to the rest of the camporee area. For this reason we are enforcing a parking and traffic policy. This will help to keep traffic low, and will only allow certain groups at certain times to cross the bridge. Here is the break down. 5pm 10pm Friday 9am 5pm Saturday 7pm 10pm Saturday 9am Sunday Boy Scout Trucks and Trailers ONLY. All others in assigned area, Webelos drive in, set up and drive out by 5pm to park in assigned area. LDS Troops for Saturday evening dismissal. Troops and Webelos for Sunday dismissal. BASIC POLICIES ATTENTION: PATROL LEADERS IMPORTANT INFORMATION Adhering to these policies sets the correct example to the Scouts and gives the Scouting program a wholesome effect for its boy members. Fire Fuel Fires should be built in designated campfire locations only. DO NOT CUT DOWN TREES, LIVE OR DEAD. Firewood provided by Camporee Staff. Use of Water Water spigots are for drinking and filling water containers only. Do not wash your dishes at the water spigots. Dispose of waste water in accordance with Leave No Trace practices. Equipment Besides your patrol gear, other equipment will be needed for cooking, as described in this manual, make sure you are equipped to feed extra boys. Please note and fulfill these needs.

6 Camping Code The Scout Oath and Law shall be the law of the camp. Scouts should also practice Leave No Trace Camping whenever possible and follow the Outdoor Code. Parking Parking will be directed by the Camporee Staff, and will be in designated areas only. Select parking or driving is permitted in the camping areas. Refer to PARKING AND TRAFFIC. Lanterns No type of open flame is allowed in any tent (candles, kerosene lamps, etc.) Fireworks Absolutely no fireworks are permitted at the camporee. Alcohol/Drugs No beer or other intoxicating liquors or non-medically prescribed drugs are allowed in our Council camps. Smoking Smoking is discouraged on Scout events. With this in mind this is a non-smoking camp. NOTES TO PARTICIPANTS Troop Expectations: Med Forms part A and B are expected for all Webelos, Boy Scouts and Leaders. Troops are expected to cook their own meals while at the Rock n Roll Camporee. Troops should police their campsites and handle troop discipline Troops should allow for no more than 10 Webelos scouts to visit during mealtimes, one adult leader from each troop is asked to donate his/her time as a camporee staffer to run a station during the day on Saturday. Please remember, this event is about the boys. When boys run events they miss out on the fun. Troop Campsite Locations Check in with the Camporee Headquarters when arriving at the Rock n Roll Camporee. Please set up camp in the Troop camping areas only.(sites 3-10) Please leave the remainder of the area for the campfire and camporee events. Patrol and Scout Participation The Camporee Staff will work to ensure that every scout in a Patrol participates in events. One emphasis of the Camporee Events is to encourage Patrol participation, cooperation and teamwork. Organization Scorecards: Each Patrol will be issued a scorecard on Friday Evening. The scorecard will be the Patrol's Official Scorecard for the entire Camporee. At each Patrol event the Staff Member will write the Patrol's score on the card, then he and the Patrol Leader will initial it. The scorecard must be taken to each Patrol event in order for the Patrol to receive an official score. Staff Members will also keep scorecards, but only as a reference. Bring a clipboard for carrying and protecting the Patrol's scoreboard. Scorecards will be collected at the end of the events. Patrol Counselor: A Camporee staff member will be assigned as a Staff Counselor for each Troop. He will conduct the personal evaluations of the Patrols to which he is assigned and check their campsites during lunch on Saturday and Patrol appearance at Flag Closing on Saturday night Timekeeping To keep the Camporee moving on schedule there will be a cannon or horn kept at Camporee Headquarters. It will be sounded at key times during the Camporee to announce the beginning and/or end of the major events.

From a central starting point, you will be given 6 points to attempt to find. Each marker will have a letter assigned. Complete the course with the correct letter sequence. Fastest time earns an award. Tomahawks (individual) Another classic camporee event. Participants will attempt to throw 3 tomahawks and score points. High score earns an award.

8 6 knot relay (individual) Judged on time taken to tie knots correctly. The six knots are the square, bowline, sheet bend, clove hitch, round turn and two half hitches, and sheep shank. Deer Stalking (individual) The Scoutmaster acts as a deer, not hiding but standing, and moving occasionally now and then. The Scouts go out to find the deer, and each tries in his own way to get up to it unseen. Directly the Scoutmaster sees a Scout he directs him to stand up as having failed. After a certain time the Scoutmaster calls "Time," and all stand up at the spot which they have reached, and the nearest wins. Closest to the Scoutmaster earns 50 points. Points decrease 5 points from closest to furthest away. Jousting (individual) This is a favorite game of the Boy Scouts of America, and was invented by Mr. Ernest Thompson Seton, Chief Scout of America. Two Scouts are mounted on upturned tubs, about six feet apart, and armed with long wooden poles. Each pole has padding on both ends, and the Scouts have to knock one another off the tubs with the poles. The padding, of course, prevents any damage being done. If tubs cannot be obtained, milk crates can be used instead. 2x4 obstacle course (patrol) Your patrol will use the 2 x 4 s board to navigate an obstacle course in a race against the clock. This is an activity that will require the patrol to move together as a unit. Every patrol member will stand on the 2 x 4 s, grasp the loop of rope attached to each board, and lift the boards in concert to move through the course. Left, right, left, right, Mousetrap Minefield (patrol) Patrols must help their SPL navigate a minefield full of mousetraps. SPL will be blindfolded and will enter the minefield only with directions from his patrol. SPL must make it through the minefield and back out without setting off any or mousetraps. Fastest time will receive an award. Tug of war (patrol) Patrols no more than five boys per side, troop vs troop. Patrol that wins receives five points for each win. Campsite Inspection (Patrol) Saturday lunch will be a scored event. Patrols should start at NOON and use the patrol menu in preparing a lunch that includes a proper balanced meal, with at least one cooked item. A staff member will evaluate the patrol as it completes the meal, from start to finish. Scoring will be based on teamwork, success at following the patrol method, balanced menu and quality of food. At the same time, the staff member will perform a campsite evaluation, using the checklist presented below as a guide. Camping is more than just setting up some tents. The site will be evaluated for layout, cleanliness and organization, arrangement in preparing and cooking the meal.

All dishes must be prepared on Saturday, October 17 th, on site and presented to Camporee HQ by 7:30 P.M. Dishes will be judged by commissioner staff. Winning dishes will be awarded at the arena show. As with any Iron Chef completion there are a few twists that chefs need to deal with. First twist is that entries can only be cooked in a fire or a Dutch oven. Second, Entrees need to have one or more of the following items in the dish: Pumpkin, Raisins, Turkey, or a Citrus fruit. Last, Desserts must have one or more of the following ingredients in the dish: Cranberries, Maple Syrup, Melon, or Cinnamon. All entries must be accompanied by a recipe. 11 Arena Show Auditions Scouts can audition to do a song, skit, or run-on. Auditions will be done by the flag pole Saturday, October 17 th at 5 P.M. All awards will be handed out during the Arena Show with other entertainment provided by the camporee staff. Afternoon Program: Ga Ga Ball Tournament Basic Rules of the Game 1. Camporee Staffer will be the referee. The referee is the sole authority during play and is responsible for settling disputes and ensuring fair play. 2. The referee begins play only after all players are standing in the Ga-ga court and have indicated that they are ready to start the game by placing their hands on the wall. 3. The referee tosses the ball up in the air. Players yell Ga on the first bounce and Ga again on the second bounce, and Ball on the third bounce, the ball is then in play. 4. Players hit the ball with their hands only, and may not carry or throw the ball - it must be punched with open hand or fist. 5. Any player who is touched by the ball either directly or by a rebound off the wall is out, then must step out of the pit. 6. If the ball contacts a player or a player s clothing below the waist, that player is eliminated. If the ball contacts the player above the waist, the player is still in. 7. If the ball goes out of the Ga-ga court, the last player to touch the ball is eliminated. 8. If a player catches the ball before it bounces, the player who had the last contact with the ball is eliminated. 9. Once the player hits the ball, he or she must wait until the ball touches someone else before hitting it again (no double touches). 10. If there are only two players remaining, a player may hit the ball up to 3 times in a row. The ball is rejuvenated by contact with the wall, and the hit count resets.

12 Camporee House Rules for the Ga Ga Tournament There will be two divisions of play in the tournament. Individual or Last man standing and Patrol Competition. Last Man Standing: Patrol Competition: It s Scout against Scout in a free for all. From 2 to 4:30 this Pit is open to all scouts. This is a good spot to practice for the patrol competition, and learn some strategy. This competition ramps up at 4:30 when ONE scout from each troop enters the Ga Ga pit for our final standoff. All troops will play, but only one troop will have the Last Man Standing. Patrols of 8 boys. Single Elimination Bracket Advancement. During the morning please stop by the Ga Ga pits and sign up your patrol for the competition. At 2pm the bracket will be introduced, and at 2:30 the patrol competition will begin. One loss and you are out of the running. The winning patrol will earn the GLFSC Golden Camporee Ga Ga Ball. Evening Program: Arena Show Use the sheet below for auditions. Auditions will be done by the flagpole on Saturday at 5pm. Troop Patrol Name Skit Description: A final word to Scoutmasters. Please use the Rock n Roll camporee as a recruitment tool. Nothing shows a young scout what your troop is all about better than a campout. We appreciate your interest and help with the spreading the word, and the Camporee staff will do its part to help your troop make a good first impression. See you in October.
