2 TRAILBLAZER DISTRICT FALL CAMPOREE 2013 GUIDE Page 1 of 20 GENERAL RULES A spirit of Scouting courtesy and brotherhood must prevail during the entire camporee if it is to be a success. The Scout Oath, Law, and Outdoor Code are the guides for behavior at the camporee. Troops or individuals who do not conform to this spirit will be asked to leave the camporee. 1. A registration fee of $13 will be charged to cover the cost of the camporee supplies, patches, and prizes. Please visit to sign up online with a $1discount, or to print the registration form and mail it in. The fee must be paid no later than one week prior to the start of the camporee to guarantee your space. A $5.00 late registration penalty per Scout will be assessed to any unit registering later than one week prior to the camporee. 2. Troops should arrive and depart in full uniform. The uniform is required to be worn for the Saturday campfire and Sunday assembly. 3. Scouts should dress for Saturday activities in a manner that is appropriate for the activity and the weather. No camouflage clothing is allowed. Each Scout should have an ample supply of water with them at all times. 4. All campsites will be assigned by the camporee staff. Each Troop is requested to use the minimum space for its campsite. 5. Troops should not plan to arrive at the camporee site before 4:00 p.m. Friday. Campsites will not be assigned prior to that time. 6. Parking will be allowed in campsite areas at the discretion of the camporee staff and when allowed by camp rules. There will be a designated parking area. 7. A map of the camporee grounds will be located at the camporee headquarters. 8. Troops must remove all garbage from the camporee. 9. Safety and fire protection is the responsibility of everyone at the camporee. Fire pits should be used. Be very careful with fires, have fire buckets and fire fighting tools available. All fires must have a 5 foot radius safety zone cleared around the fire, unless otherwise specified by the camp rules. 10. Taps will be at 11:00 p.m. each evening at the camporee. Reveille will be at 6:00 a.m. Quiet hours are between those times. Activities such as cooking, setting up camp, playing will not be permitted. Units should plan to arrive at the camporee in ample time to have their campsites established by Taps. Up to 100 points may be deducted from the campsite inspection score for failure to observe this rule. 11. Patrol Leaders should, upon completion of each event, check with the judge for that event for his patrol s score. If the Patrol Leader and the judge cannot agree on the score, they should immediately summon the camporee chairman who will determine the score at that time. The decision of the camporee chairman will be final.

Visitors to a troop campsite must have the permission of the unit leader. Visitors are welcome to attend field events and the Saturday evening campfire, and may bring picnic lunches and supper to the camporee. Visitors must depart the camporee before Taps. 13. Any unsafe or improper use of knives, axes or other tools will result in a lowering of the campsite inspection score. Tot n chips must be in possession for some events. 14. Sheath knives and fixed blade scabbard knives are prohibited. 15. No cutting or gathering wood on camporee grounds. 16. All campfire skits, songs, etc., must conform to Scouting standards, and must be submitted to the camporee staff for screening prior to 10:00 a.m. Saturday. 17. Meal planning is the responsibility of each troop. A cracker-barrel will be provided Friday night. Each troop/patrol must prepare their own meals, including: Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday Lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday Breakfast. 18. Adults have the option to purchase a meal plan which will include a snack Friday night, breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. Bring your own cup. If you plan to use this option, YOU MUST SIGN UP FOR THE MEAL PLAN ONLINE AT LEAST ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE, to ensure that enough food is prepared. 19. 4 TRAILBLAZER DISTRICT FALL CAMPOREE 2013 GUIDE Page 3 of 20 SCORING AND RIBBONS Ribbons (and/or other awards, at the discretion of the Camporee Committee) will be presented in two categories: Events: Three ribbons (blue, red, and yellow for first, second, and third place respectively) will be awarded to the patrols attaining the three highest scores in each event. Overall: Each patrol will receive an overall camporee ribbon (blue, red, or yellow). This ribbon will be based on total points earned in several areas relating to scout spirit, participation in all activities, scout uniform wear, and campsite condition. AREA MAXIMUM SCORE A. Participation in all events 50 points B. Patrol Flag and Yell 50 points C. Campfire skit/song turned in by 10am Saturday D. Attendance at all SPL meetings by Troop SPL or assistant 50 points 50 points E. Scout uniform 50 points F. Scout spirit 50 points G. 8 TRAILBLAZER DISTRICT CAMPOREE GUIDE Page 7 of 20 CAMPOREE EVENTS 1. SCOUT QUIZ (FULL PARTICIPATION) Written quiz with general Scout knowledge. SCORING: 10 points each correct answer. This is a timed event. 2. KNOT TYING The following 10 knots will be tied under actual, usable conditions: bowline square knot two half hitches fisherman's knot taut-line hitch sheet bend sheepshank timber hitch clove hitch slip knot For example, a rope will be attached to a pole and the Scout will tie it around a stake for a taut-line Hitch. Similar conditions will apply for all knots. Entire patrol participates lined up in relay style. On judge's signal, first Scout runs back (judge will announce next knot before next Scout is tagged), and tags next Scout who follows same procedure, then to next Scout, etc., until all 10 knots are tied. If a Scout ties a knot improperly or does not know the knot, the judge will declare one miss and direct the next Scout to run forward. Five minute time limit. SCORING: A timed event. There will be a 15 sec. penalty for each incorrect knot. 3. MAP SYMBOLS Scout will be asked to identify map symbols on a quadrangle map furnished by the judges (U.S. Engineers or Coast and Geodetic survey). Symbols will be circled or there will be flash cards. Minimum of eight of 14 different symbols per patrol. Each member of the patrol must identify at least one symbol. No coaching by other members of the patrol. Patrols with less than eight (8) members will use some members twice. Symbols such as the following will be used:(ref: SCOUT HAND BOOK) church building marsh railroad cemetery woodland bridge power line road small stream school scale contour line magnetic north SCORING: The most correct answers in the least amount of time wins. 4. COMPASS COURSE Follow a compass course having three legs of 100 feet or more. Closest to the last location will determine the score. All equipment will be furnished by judges. SCORING: Total 100 points. One (1) point will be deducted for each ft. of error. Minimum score will be 25 points. Highest score wins.

9 TRAILBLAZER DISTRICT CAMPOREE GUIDE Page 8 of 20 CAMPOREE EVENTS 5. AXEMANSHIP Limited to Scouts with a Tote 'n Chip card in possession; No other member of Patrol will compete. Patrols must have a minimum of three members to compete. Patrols line up in relay style, facing a chopping block 15 feet away. At signal first Scout runs to block, splits a board into two pieces (USING CONTACT METHOD) then sinks ax into chopping block, then runs back and touches the next Scout who runs to the block and repeats the entire process, etc., until patrol is finished. Object is to split as many full length pieces of wood as possible within time limit. Time limit 5 minutes. Judges will furnish one hand ax in good condition, a chopping block and lumber boards 12" long. If any boy in Patrol fails to use CONTACT METHOD whole Patrol will be disqualified. SCORING: Most number of pieces split wins. Ties will be rerun. 6. AXEMANSHIP AND BOW SAWING Limited to Scouts with a Tote 'n Chip card in possession. Equipment furnished: Hook and cooking utensil; 1 four foot pole 2" in diameter; 1 two foot pole 1" in diameter; bow saw; hand ax and knife. Using the dovetail notch make a utensil rack as diagrammed below sufficient to hold the weight of utensil filled with water. No score if rack does not hold with utensil filled with water, or tools not used safely. SCORING: Lowest time wins. 7. FIRE BUILDING Entire Patrol participates. Judge will give the patrol leader 2 matches or flint & steel, one #10 can cut in half and filled one half full of water containing one heaping tablespoon of Tide. Object is to boil the water until soapsuds boil over the top of the can using only native materials to build fire. Any type of fireplace or dingle stick may be used. Time will be called the second the suds boil over the top of the can. Beaters not exceeding 14x14 inches may be used. SCORING: Event will be timed.

10 TRAILBLAZER DISTRICT CAMPOREE GUIDE Page 9 of 20 CAMPOREE EVENTS 8. FIRST AID Entire Patrol participates, using one of there own Scouts as the victim. The Patrol will be given 5 minutes to apply bandages on head, hand, knee, ankle, and arm sling. SCORING: 100 total points. The highest score wins. in case of a tie, the fastest time will be used to determine the winners. 9. LASHING AND CHARIOT RACE The judge will furnish four 4-foot poles, three 7-foot poles, and 11 pieces of 6-foot binding twine or rope (patrol may furnish their own rope if they desire). At the signal, entire Patrol will lash the two 4-foot poles with a shear lashing (A) to form a 7-foot pole and will lash two 4-foot poles to a furnished 7-foot pole and newly formed 7-foot pole with four square lashings (B) to make the following frame: Then the Patrol will lash the two remaining 7-foot poles to the fore-mentioned frame with diagonal lashings at (C) and (D). Ten lashings are required for the final frame to be like this: Then one Patrol member will spread eagle himself on the frame, and two members will then pull the frame around a fixed point and back to the beginning point. SCORING: The fastest times will win. Thirty (30) seconds will be added to the time for each lash that is improperly lashed or fails to hold to the point that a pole can be easily removed from the lash without unlashing the lash. In case of a tie, patrols will be back at the end of the day to break the tie.

CAMPSITE OBSERVATION Each Patrol will be taken individually to a camp site that has been set up with ten (10) glaring mistakes and instructed to compile a list of the things they find wrong with the camp. Errors might include: tent on a steep slope, ax lying on the ground, open hole garbage in it, tent under a dead limb, etc. Patrol will then give list to judge. SCORING: 100 total points. Ten (10) points will be deducted for each incorrect answer written. Five (5) points will be deducted for each answer left blank. if all are left blank, 50 points max. Highest score wins. In case of a tie, the fastest time wins. 11. MYSTERY EVENT To be announced at the camporee. The objective is to be prepared. SCORING: To be announced. 12. TENT PITCHING Team of two from Patrol stand at attention with two shelter halves rolled in front of them. Rolled into these shelter halves should be 10 tent pegs, 2 poles, and 2 six-foot ropes. At starting signal, Patrol advances and proceeds to erect their tent. Tent must be smooth, neat, and tight, using taut line hitch. Errors may be remedied. This is a "time" event. Judge furnishes hammer or mall. SCORING: Best time wins. In case of a tie the patrols will be called back at the end of the day to break the tie. There will be 15 seconds added to the time for each incorrect knot. 13. ARCHERY Each boy in the patrol will shoot 2 arrows at a target located approximately 15 yards away. After all boys have shot, the arrows will be scored. The scoring is to be standard archery scoring ( ). SCORING: The total score will be divided by the number of boys in the patrol. Highest patrol average wins. In case of a tie the patrols will be called back at the end of the day to break the tie.
