Highlander District Spring Camporee April 4-6, 2014 Twin Oaks Trails Highland Games

Introduction: There are many legends about the origins of the Scottish Games. The oldest traces the Games tradition back to the period of Roman invasions in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, where Scottish warriors reputedly displayed their bravery and strength by performing feats of skill and power in front of the opposing army. The most widely accepted tale describes the Games as informal athletic tests by which Kings and Clan Chiefs examined the agility, cunning and physical strength of their clansmen. The victors of these trials were then awarded positions of leadership both on the battlefield and within the clan. The Scottish Highland Games or "Heavy Events" are the modern continuation of this ancient Celtic tradition. Our Highland games will combine traditional Celtic sports that originated centuries ago in the Scottish Highlands with a few Scouting twists. Scouts will compete in fun and challenging Celtic tests of strength, endurance and skill. The games are open to all registered Scouts. Clans: The word clan comes from a Gaelic word meaning children, which denotes family. This is precisely what our Scout troops are families. For this weekend, the Boy Scouts will be participating not in Patrols, but in Clans for the weekend. Each Clan should consist of 5-8 Scouts. Pick a name for each Clan and provide this at time of registration. There are many internet sources for Scottish Clan names. The events are designed for Clans of 5-8 boys to run through at a time. The Cub Scouts will also be participating as clans. Units can divide and participate as Dens with individual Clan names or as a Pack with one name. The final decision on how you want the Pack to participate will be left up to the individual units. There are many ways that can help transform your patrol into a clan. Design a Clan banner. Have it reflect your Clan and/or Troop. Develop a Clan cheer or yell. You can use this during activities, games, and events. Having a Clan yell will score some Spirit points! We will debut a new Spirit Stick at the Games! Some clans express their unity by possession of common emblems or symbolic colors. Well known are the tartans, or plaid textile designs of Scottish clans. At our Highland Games, it is requested that your clan wear their tartan! This can be as easy as plaid epaulets or plaid armbands. If possible, make kilts. You don t need to go out and purchase kilts. These can be as simple as buying a roll of fabric, wrapping a piece of fabric around the waist and pinning in place. (Let s not be too traditional and make sure shorts are worn under the kilts!) Remember your campsites. A gateway may add extra points to the campsite inspection. 2

Important Information Registration & Fees Registration is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Teams, Venture Crews and Scouters for the entire weekend. For Cub Scouts, parents and siblings can also register. Registration includes access to all events and a camporee patch. The cost is $10.00 per Scout and Scouter, $6 for family members. Max cost per family of $40. Tour Plans & Health Forms Tour plans are only required if coming from a NON-OCCONEECHEE District. Current health forms MUST accompany all units to the campout. They will be verified at check-in. Parking All vehicles must be parked in the designated area at all times. NO EXCEPTIONS! Check-in Procedure Check-in and registration will be from 4 pm-8 pm Friday night. Registration will be at the Administration Area. Please have your unit s roster of attendees and health forms at that time. An updated roster will be required at check in so we know who is in camp. If a scout or Scouter plans on arriving late or leaving early they will have to check in or out with the camp director before heading to camp or leaving. Your help with this is greatly appreciated. Meals & Restrooms All meals will be the responsibility of each unit. Port-a-let facilities will be located throughout the camp. Water will be available at the front of the camp. Check-Out Procedures The camporee staff will be at the headquarters for check-out. Remember a scout is clean, please police your campsite and leave it better then when you arrived. Take trash with you. When your unit passes Camp Site Check-Out Inspection, you will receive your Camporee Patches. Campsite Inspections There will be inspections of all the campsites as a part of the program. Inspections will take place on Saturday as one of the events. Campfires Campfires will be limited and only in approved areas. NO GROUND FIRES! For the Camp Campfire Saturday night recommend bringing a chair or blanket to sit on. Minors Leaving Camp Any minors leaving camp must come to the Admin Area with a Leader from their unit. This way we will know that a unit will know one of their youth are gone. 4

Cub Scout Events: This Camporee will involve traditional Highland Games activities with a few Scouting twists. All of the Cub Scout activities will be age appropriate. Please see the Boy Scout guidelines for a suggestion of what the event will be. Never underestimate the spirit of the highlands. There may be other feats of skill and fortitude added Remember the Cub Scout Motto? Do your best. a. Caber Toss b. Sheaf Toss c. Braemar Stone Toss d. Golf Game e. Log Drag f. Toss the Haggis g. The materials and the scoring responsibilities will be discussed at that time. It is up to your unit to determine how you will staff the event. A Scout is Cheerful. There will also be a Spirit Stick for the Cubs. Wearing kilts of your clan tartan, clan specific epaulets or fabric patch will give your unit points. Yelling that Clan yell will give you spirit points. Displaying the Clan banner will give you spirit points. The Scouts should demonstrate an ability to work together. Points may be deducted for arguing or inability to work together. Remember that A Scout is Clean. Campsite inspections will also be performed during the weekend. 5

The sheep being tossed will be fake. g. Kim s Game a memory game h. Sack Race/Cairn building a cairn is a trail marker consisted of stones. Boys will disassemble a cairn, then take turns hopping in a sack to move the stones to another location and reassemble. Stability counts! A timed event. i. Axe throw (tomahawks) j.
