2 Directions Putnam County Veteran s Memorial Park: 201 Gipsy Trail Road Carmel, New York, From Route 6 Eastbound from Mahopac towards Carmel: Make a left onto Belden Road. Belden ends at Route 301. Make a left onto Route 301. After you cross over the causeway between the reservoirs, make a right onto Gypsy Trail Road. Putnam County Veteran s Park (upper part) will be on the right after approximately 9/10th of a mile. Lower part will be on the left at the bottom of the hill. 2

4 Station # 1 Luau Invisible Pig Roast (fire building) To prepare for the pig roast, your patrol will need to build a fire that will burn though a string. Once the fire is lit, the scouts may not handle or add to the fire without the loss of points. Scouts are encouraged to bring their own fire building and starting materials to reduce their time spent at this station. Points will be awarded for burning the string within a time limit as well as scout spirit/teamwork. Bonus points will be added for fires started without matches (ex: flint and steel) and deducted for fires started with lighters. Station # 2 Build a tribute (Knot tying) 1. Square Knot 2. Sheet bend 3. Two half hitches 4. Tautline hitch 5. Timber hitch 6. Bowline (both as an individual loop and around an object) Rope for this station will be provided Point will be awarded for each correctly tied knot (full points for unaided tying vs. partial points for referencing the scout handbook), and scout spirit/teamwork. 4

5 Station # 3 Ice Caves Mishap (Ice Rescue) In the Mauna Loa Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii are some deep lava tubes and contain frozen lakes deep within. While spelunking, one of your scouts ignores the danger signs and decides to do an epic slide to impress his Instagram followers. Of course the ice breaks and the scout falls in. Your patrol now has to rescue your friend and provide appropriate first aid. Scouts will need show how to safely rescue someone who has fallen in a frozen lake using a line rescue (line rescue rope will be provided), and provide first aid for hypothermia. Points will be awarded for correct demonstration of ice rescue and first aid as well as scout spirit/teamwork. Station # 4 Volcano Tour Rescue (First Aid) While exploring the steaming rocks at the top of a volcano, one of your scouts loses his footing and drops 10 feet down onto one of the steam vents. The scout shows a second degree burn on his arm and a broken shin bone. Your patrol will need to properly address the situation and transport the scout to safety. Points will be awarded for proper situational awareness, first aid, stretcher building, and scout spirit/teamwork. 5

6 Station # 5 Surfs Up (sled race) After making friends with some of the locals, your troop learns of the little known sport of land surfing, where sleds are raced down an open lava tube. Points will be awarded for patrols successfully navigating their sled through the course, as well as scout spirit and teamwork. There will be a separate award at the end for the fastest patrol. Station # 6 Moving Bridge of Doom (Teamwork) While returning from a hike in the rainforest, your patrol upsets a hive of bees. You manage to get away from the bees just as you get to a crevice. The only way a cross is an old bridge that has only a few planks remaining. Some of your patrol were stung and either can t see or have lost the use of an arm. Points will be awarded for transporting the patrol across the bridge. Most of the points in this station will be awarded for scout spirit/ teamwork. 6

7 Station #7 Ash Cloud Escape ( Blind obstacle course) While exploring a volcano, it suddenly expels a huge cloud of ash, making seeing impossible. Your patrol will have to navigate without sight to escape the ash cloud. Points will be awarded for successfully navigating the course using scout spirt and teamwork. Station # 8 Original Classic Car contest (Sled Inspection) The original cars were carts and sleds. Your patrol will have the chance to show off just how good a sled they have built. This station will be held at the end of the event to see how the sleds have held up after a day of use. Points will be awarded for quality of lashing, and gear being tied down using a diamond hitch. Point will be deducted for use of dimensional lumber and visible hardware (does not include superficial additions for creativity). Bonus points will be added for theme based creativity. 7
