1 2019 Tamanend District Klondike Derby & Winter Campout Events Boy Scout Event Information Packet Ockanickon Scout Reservation 5787 State Park Road Pipersville, PA Klondike Derby Event - Saturday, February 2, 2019 Troops may backpack instead of using sleds. Backpackers will have Six additional backpack Stations. (Prepare like going to Philmont see attached list) The cost will be $15.00 per Scout if the unit registers on or before January 20, The cost is the same whether the Scout is attending the one-day Klondike Derby event or the winter campout option at OSR for the weekend. All unit registrations and payments are to be made on-line at Late registration will occur after January 20, 2019 at a cost of $17.00 per Scout. Unit rosters must be provided at the time of registration check-in. Event registration is to be completed by Sunday, January 27, Refund Policy - No refunds will be given after January 26, 2019, but substitutions will be permitted. If both the Klondike Derby is cancelled due to extreme weather conditions, and not rescheduled, all pre-paid registrations will be returned minus a charge for actual costs incurred. Lost & Found - Any items found should be turned in to the registration table at Foster Hall. Items may be claimed during the event or at the February district roundtable. Parking - Please carpool to minimize the number of vehicles. Weather permitting, Units that will be participating in the weekend Winter Campout are permitted to bring one vehicle into camp to unload equipment on Friday night at their campsites or lodge. Otherwise, all gear will need to be packed into the site. All vehicles must park in the OSR parking lot for the remainder of the weekend. Please help us keep our roads clear by not parking on them. When driving in the parking lot and weather permitting, on any camp road, please proceed slowly and carefully. At camp we have many scouts but none to spare, maximum speed limit on all camp roads is 5 M.P.H. Please do not park on lawns. OSR s official Weekend Camping Policies & Procedures can be found here.

2 Winter Campout Event February 1-2, 2019 Cold Weather Camping - It is the responsibility of each Scout and adult Scouter to be fully prepared for a wide range of weather conditions that can exist during the winter. It is the duty and responsibility of each unit leader to ensure that all participants from their unit have received adequate cold weather training and are properly equipped including, but not limited to, proper clothing, shelter, food, water and first aid. Dress warm and in layers for the expected weather conditions. Boots must be worn - NO SNEAKERS or other unsuitable footwear will be allowed. If a camper is not properly prepared for the existing weather conditions, the camper is subject to being asked to leave the event by the district staff. Campsites - Units will be assigned a campsite at check-in. Based on unit size, some campsites may be shared with another unit. Water may or may not be available at the campsites. Units should consider bringing water from home or may need to fill water containers at select water locations at OSR. All Scouts must observe and use the rules of the buddy system. Registration Check-in Units should not plan on arriving before 6:00 PM on Friday. Registration check-in will be in Foster Hall. Check-in Friday will be open from 7-9 pm. 50 extra points will be award for Friday night check-in for all sleds. 100 extra points for backpackers. Senior Patrol Leaders will need to provide a roster of their group members along with their Group Leaders cell phone numbers. Units will also need to bring their sled/backpacks for inspection at this time. Check-in Saturday will open at 8:30AM after sleds are launched. Saturday check-in teams will have to wait until Derby opens to register and to have sled inspected before starting any other stations. Take advantage of the points and time, check-in Friday Meals - All meals will be cooked in your unit s camp site Bring your own cooking gear and food. Bring one can of non-creamy soup per scout for the Klondike Derby Hobo soup lunch. First Aid - In the case of a life-threatening emergency to a Scout or adult, an adult (or Scout if necessary) should immediately call with a cell phone and then send a runner to Hopi camp site to report the emergency to a staff member. In the case of minor injuries or illness to a Scout or adult, they can use their personal or troop first aid kit, however, there also will be medical personnel at Hopi camp site. All injuries and illnesses should be reported to your unit adult leader. Webelos Scouts WILL BE ALLOWED TO CAMP OVER NIGHT if they are sponsored by a Troop and have reserved one of the HEATED lodges. Webelos are NOT permitted to camp outdoors from November 1 st through March 31 st. Check-Out - Closing ceremony will be at 5pm at the Camp office parade field on Saturday. Units can stay Saturday until Sunday and take ownership of the site, however, units may stay no longer than 10:00 AM on Sunday without prior notice. All campsites will be inspected prior to check out. Please be sure that you leave your campsite cleaner than you found it.

3 Schedule for the Winter Campout and Klondike Derby Events Friday Night 6:00 PM Registration check-in at Foster Hall porch opens for troops participating in the Winter Campout weekend 9:00 PM Registration closes 9:30 PM SPL/Scoutmaster briefing meeting in Foster Hall Saturday 7:00 AM Reveille - Winter Campout troops prepare breakfast at Campsite 8:00 AM Station Managers pick up score sheets and materials at the Klondike Derby Registration in Foster hall 8:25 AM Patrols meet at New Parade field for Scout Law, Oath 8:30 AM Sleds are launched, and all stations will OPEN (Saturday Arrivals will need to check-in AFTER sleds are launched & sled inspected) 12:00 PM Stations close until after lunch 12:05 PM Lunch served in Foster Hall. Hobo Stew, Chili, Rolls, & PBJ Units may leave their sleds at any station while attending lunch 1:00 PM Stations reopen for afternoon 3:30 PM All stations will CLOSE 3:45 PM Station Managers and Patrols must return the Score sheets to the registration table in Foster Hall 4:00 PM Sleds assemble at the Parade Field for the sled race 4:15 PM Sled Race begins Each sled will be timed 5:00 PM Klondike results announced & Closing. Units can stay overnight and take responsibility of the site. Note - If your unit plans on participating in the Klondike Derby event and has not yet volunteered to run a station, please contact Tim Kilgore at Tkilgore12@yahoo.com to reserve your station choice today. Station choices are assigned on a first come, first serve basis, so don t delay! Troops are requested to provide station volunteers for each sled entered. Points will be given to those sleds that have provided station volunteers and "adopted" a station(s). First Aid Station - A First Aid Station will be located at the Hopi camp site and will be staffed during the event. All injuries should be brought to the attention of the First Aid Staff immediately. Know the signs for hypothermia and frostbite! Keep an eye on all scouts and adults you have an opportunity to see. If anyone appears to be hypothermic or frostbitten, they should report to the First Aid Station at Hopi camp site immediately for warming and further evaluation.

4 Klondike Derby Event Specific Rules Age Groups and Awards Awards will be given to the highest finishers in each of the three age groups: 13 and under, 14 and over and mixed age sleds. Group Size At least 4 Scouts per sled and please try to limit the Patrol size to a maximum of 6 to 8 Scouts Use of the Handbook and Other References Patrols are encouraged to bring the BSA Handbook or another reference such as the BSA Field book on their sleds. If a reference is used at a station, the Patrol would lose 10 points from their skill score of the task. Uniform No Class A Scout uniforms are required for the event. Scouts must dress appropriately for the anticipated weather conditions and must wear boots or hiking shoes (NO SNEAKERS). Clothing must contain no inappropriate language or graphics. Dress in layers so you can adjust your comfort level. Sled Requirements The sled may have wheels and an axle that does not protrude excessively or have sharp edges. Sleds may not contain inappropriate language or imagery. Sleds must be sturdy enough to carry a Scout and must be able to safely hold all of the required and any recommended gear that the Patrol may bring to the event. 2 wheeled sleds only (25 point deduction if more then 2), and sled must be brought to each station (10 point deduction if not) Station Volunteers Each unit is asked to run one station per sled registered from their unit. Station managers are asked to register their choice(s) of stations to run in advance of the event with Tim Kilgore (Tkilgopre12@yahoo.com) and after submitting their station choices, they will be provided with information on what the unit will need bring in order to successfully run their chosen stations. If a troop simply does not have the adult resources to run a station, please discuss this issue with the event coordinator ahead of time. SLED INFORMATION A properly outfitted Klondike Sled is the most important tool for a Patrol to compete in the Klondike Derby. NOTE - Pre-assembled sleds may be used for this event. There will not be any points awarded for the assembly of the sleds at the event. Required Materials Patrols may not leave the launch area without these items: First Aid Kit One quart of water per Scout and a safe way to drink it A trash bag to collect garbage found on the trail Snacks to feed the entire Patrol Klondike Sled with a well decorated Patrol Flag Pencil or Pen Notepad At least one watch per Patrol Unit roster with sled members listed and competition age group(s) clearly identified (note roster must be surrendered at registration check-in)

5 There is a score penalty for not having equipment stated in the required materials list. Items That May Be Needed For Use at Stations A mirror or other reflective signaling device A compass for each participant Boy Scout Handbook or Boy Scout Field book Method of securing gear onto the sled and to hold the items in place (even if the sled were to be turned upside-down) Items to properly splint an arm and a leg 5 staves (poles approximately 5 ft in length) and sufficient amount of rope to lash the staves together Sufficient amount of rope to tie the Patrol member s shoes to two (2) 2 x 4 studs A method to mark and measure distance 2 ways to start a fire, 1 of which cannot be a lighter, matches, or torch Fuel for 2 very small wood fires Container to safely transport extremely fragile items (the fragile package is approximately 6inch x 7 inch in size) without damage over long distances Patrol Cheer Semaphore Chart Pocketknife Backpacking Information Required Roster First Aid Kit Backpack: Every Scout Tent: One per two Scouts Sleeping bag: Every Scout Backpacking Stove & Fuel: One per two Scouts Hiking Stick: Every Scout Water 1 QT: Every scout Pocket Knife W/Toting chip: One per team Matches/Lighter in Waterproof container: Two per team Small fire kit - Kindling & other materials to help start a fire: One per team Flashlight: Every Scout Compass: Every scout Map of Ockanickon - One per team Watch: One per team Whistle: Every Scout Note pad & pen: One per team 100' of rope: One per team Mess Kit: Every Scout Bear Bag: One per every two scouts Poncho/Rain Jacket: Every Scout Dressed for the weather. 6 Optional - additional 2 points per item if Team has them Sleeping Pad: Every Scout Pack cover waterproof: Every Scout Toothbrush/Toothpaste: Every Scout Towel: One per Team Cooking gear; One per team Tarp: One per team Duct tape: One per team Insect repellant: One per team Water Containers: One per team Small trowel/shovel: One per team Pillow: One per Scout Do not bring any personal electronics, fireworks or other unsafe items to the event SKILLS NEEDED In addition to teamwork, creativity and Scout Spirit, Scouts will typically be rewarded for knowing and successfully demonstrating the following Scout skills: Round lashing Square lashing Diagonal lashing A lashing which uses 2 or more staves A knot for securing slippery objects A knot for tying flat ropes A hitch that can be undone quickly A knot to secure something to a flat surface Winter first aid Tree/Leaf identification Fish identification Animal Track identification Bird identification How to use a map and map symbols Fire starting techniques Use of a compass How to measure distance and height without an official measurement tool Axe throwing technique Semaphore Flag Communication Blindfold navigation Constellation / Star Identification This list is not exhaustive, but it should be used to guide a Patrol s preparation for the event. Scoring for each station at the Klondike Derby emphasizes teamwork and the patrol method in addition to the ability to complete the specific skill. Extra points will be awarded for demonstration of a Patrol s mental fitness in answering questions relating to the subject of Scouting or of the skill being demonstrated at one of the Klondike Stations. If the members of a Patrol exhibits good teamwork and show good Scout Spirit, they will do well in the competition. The Patrol will be rewarded for understanding what Scouting is all about doing your best while living by the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.

7 The Patrol leaders will be responsible for the leadership and supervision of their Patrols at each station. Adults are strongly discouraged from accompanying the Patrols through the station activity areas and are instead encouraged to volunteer to assist with the running of the stations. RUNNING A STATION Staffing Troops are asked to provide two adults to be the Station Manager and any other volunteers assisting with the station can either be adults or mature, experienced Scouts (age 16+). Detailed Event Information Detailed notes on what is needed to run a particular station will be provided after the troop checks-in to Tim Kilgore (tkilgore12@yahoo.com). Additional Volunteers Additional volunteers are needed to help with parking, registration and sled inspection, to judge the sled race, and to help with cooking / serving lunch. If you would like to help with running any of these activities, please contact Tim Kilgore (tkilgore12@yahoo.com) KLONDIKE DERBY EVENT DESCRIPTIONS Bear Bag The Patrol must load their gear onto their sled and use rope to suspend the sled completely off the ground. Kim s Game A test of the Patrol s visual and memory skills. Code Breaking The Patrol will need to decipher encoded messages about the location of buried treasure. First Aid Station #1: Splint and Run The Patrol must demonstrate how to properly splint a fractured limb and to safely transport an injured Scout. Sled Inspection Sleds must be inspected for safety and the first aid kit will be checked along with the other required items. First Aid Station #2: Common Cold Weather Injuries The Patrol must demonstrate how to properly treat common winter camping injuries such as hypothermia. Ravine Crossing The Patrol must move their sled from one side of a 10 ft wide deep ditch to the other side. Height and Distance Estimation Without climbing or use of a measuring tape, the Patrol must be able to measure the height and horizontal distance of physical features. Hill Ascent The Patrol must maneuver their sled through a narrow course on a steep hill. Ice Rescue Some members of the Patrol become stranded on thin ice and must be rescued by the remainder of the Patrol. Knot Copy Each Patrol member will be presented with an uncommon knot (selected from a group of eight knots) that has already been tied. The Scout must reproduce the knot with the provided rope. Knot Knowledge The Patrol must tie eight common knots and match them with their appropriate use. Lashed Ladder The Patrol must lash together a ladder with the provided spars and rope. Map Making Some members of the Patrol must make a map to be followed by the remaining members of their group to a specific location. Map Reading The Patrol must answer simple questions about standard map features. Navigating Thin Ice The Patrol must navigate a mock ice course with unknown hazards. Orienteering Range The Patrol must determine the bearing (azimuth) to certain objects. Panning for Gold The Patrol members toss items from one team to another.

8 Rope Square The Patrol must assemble a square using a piece of rope in blinding snow blizzard conditions. Move The Flagpole The Patrol must move a flag pole out of harm s way. Shrinking Glaciers The Patrol must stay together on an ever-shrinking glacier. Smoosh board Race The Patrol must complete a simple course on flat ground with Smoosh boards. Giant Clove Hitch - The Patrol must tie a clove hitch under challenging conditions. Spider Hole The Patrol must enter into a Giant Ice Spider s liar to retrieve their stolen food supplies. String Burn The Patrol must build a small fire with materials found on their sled and burn through a piece of string. Tomahawk Throw The Patrol must demonstrate their ability to use a Tomahawk to ward off angry grizzly bears (Note - Station Manager must provide the axes and targets). Bird Identification The Patrol must identify the local fowl who may be game for dinner. Emergency Shelter The Patrol must quickly construct a shelter before nightfall. Track Identification The Patrol must identify the tracks of animals that may have come across their path. Staking a Claim - The Patrol must lash together a flag pole and properly stake their claim. Ice Fishing The Patrol must lash together a fishing pole to catch the elusive Northern Red Snapper fish for their evening meal. Fish Identification The Patrol must identify the local fish that may be caught for a meal. Leaf Identification The Patrol must identify the leaves / trees that are in the area. Communication - The Patrol must use Semaphore Flags to convey an urgent message. Crossing the Peat Bog The Patrol must cross a bog to reach their sled and supplies. BACKPACKING EVENT DESCRIPTIONS ALL BACKPACKERS WILL START AT THE MEMORIAL LODGE AFTER OPENING. In addition to the above stations, backpackers will need to complete these additional stations: What did you find? Units will be given map coordinates and will be asked what they found Camping Situation Using a map of Ockanickon go to the coordinates given and do the camping situation. Figure out the best solution to the problem Stuck Using a map of Ockanickon go to the coordinates given, decide how to solve the problem Emergency Using a map of Ockanickon go to the coordinates given. After opening up scenario figure out the best way to handle the emergency and get back to starting point Map Reading Determine Distance, the high & low points and what direction you are going on the hike using a topographic map Orienteering Follow course make notes (patrol will be instructed to note some specific things) NOTE - Not all of the above stations may be offered during the event (pending adult leaders assistance) and there may be additional stations offered that are not on this list.
