2019 Wasatch District Dear Boy Scouts and Leaders, We encourage every Boy Scout (focused on boys who turn 12 or 13 during 2019) and all leaders who work with those boys to attend the 2019 Klondike Derby. Scouts from the 11-year old Patrol and their fathers, as well as older Scouts are also welcome to attend. Simply coordinate those decisions within your own unit and under the direction of your COR. When: February 8-9, 2019 Where: Jordanelle State Park Cost: $8 per boy if registered before February 1, 2019 / $10 per boy if registered after February 1, 2019 No cost for any adult leaders The Klondike Derby registration page has been posted to the Wasatch District Calendar. You may follow this link to register your unit: 2019 Klondike Derby. Please register as early as possible so that we can properly coordinate the logistics for this large-scale activity. We encourage all troops to take time during some of your December and January Wednesday night activities to discuss, plan, prepare, and practice for this Derby. We encourage all leaders to have a pack check on Wed., February 6 th to ensure that each boy is prepared with the proper clothing, winter gear, sleeping bag, etc. and that the troop tents, equipment and the all-important Klondike sled are ready. We are looking forward to a fun, adventurous, safe, and memorable 2019 Klondike Derby. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact: Dave Johnson Wasatch District Program Chair dave@conceptconsultingllc.com Joe Coombs Wasatch District Activity Chair Cormed11@gmail.com 1

We will use a shotgun start, which means 3 units will begin at each of the 5 stations and then rotate through from there. Travel between stations will not be timed. Performance on each station activity will be timed/scored. During each competition flight, units not currently competing will participate in Professional Sled Dog Demonstration and will also complete their sled inspections (1/3 of the overall score). 2
Sled Requirements Each troop must bring a Klondike Sled to race. Troops that need help designing a Klondike sled can download a set of plans from Boy s Life Magazine at: You are not required to use these blueprints to make your Klondike Sled. Be creative! Each troop s sled and equipment will be inspected, and corresponding points will be awarded for having the required supplies, which must be carried on the sled during the entire Klondike Derby race. 4 Activity Stations Station 1 Anchorage Activity: Hatchet Throw Equipment: Hatchets will be supplied by Heber Hatchets ( Method: Scouts will stand behind a designated line and throw Hatchets (one at a time) at a wood target. Each troop will have 10 throws during the competition. Scoring Each hatchet that remains stuck in the wood target equals one point. The troop with the highest score wins. An additional 20 points will be awarded if all scouts in the troop made a throw. For troops with more than 10 scouts, the 20 points will be awarded if 10 different scouts made throws. Notes: Safety instruction will be provided at the station prior to throwing. Safety rules must be followed! Where possible, each boy should have the chance to make one of the designated throws. Full participation is a major component of the score. Station 2 Willow Activity: Fire Building Equipment: Troops must bring a 9 volt battery, super fine #0000 steel wool, tinder and kindling. Rods and string will be provided at the station. Method: There will be two rods in the ground and attached to them will be a string 12 inches off the ground and another string 18 inches off of the ground. At the signal, each troop will have to start a fire using a 9 volt battery, steel wool, kindling and tinder. The tinder/fire wood cannot be above the 12 inch string. The flame must burn through the 18 inch string to stop the timer. Scoring The event is timed. The troop with the fastest time wins. An additional 20 points will be awarded to each troop that successfully burns through the 18 string, regardless of time. Notes: If a troop is unable to start the fire using a 9-volt battery and steel wool, scouts may use a match to earn the participation points. Station 3 Ophir Activity: Camp Stove Challenge Equipment: One small backpacking stove for each three scouts in the troop, matches or lighters. Method: At the signal, scouts must connect the fuel source to the stove, light the stove, fill a tin cup with snow, melt it, and bring the water to a boil. (bubbles must break the surface in order to be considered a boil). Scoring The event is timed. The troop with the fastest time wins. An additional 20 points will be awarded to each troop that successfully brings the water to a boil. Notes: Each troop has the option to use more than one stove (i.e., 3 scouts per stove). The one with the fastest time will be recorded. (Extra wilderness manhood points if you can figure out a way to carry fire from the Willow activity to this station to light your backpacking stove! jk) 4
Station 4 Unalakleet Activity: Travois Race Equipment: Each troop must provide two 6-8 poles, one 4-6 pole and three 6 x ¼ ropes. Method: At the signal, each troop will assemble a travois (A-Frame) by tying two square lashings and one diagonal lashing. (Square lashing must begin and end with a clove hitch. The diagonal lashing must begin with a timber hitch and end with a clove hitch). A scout from each troop must be placed on the chariot, and he will be carried by his fellow troop members around a marked course and across the finish line. Scoring The event is timed. The troop with the fastest time wins. An additional 20 points will be awarded to each troop that successfully builds the travois. Notes: Knots and lashings will be inspected. 10 seconds will be added to the time for each incorrect knot or lashing. Station 5 Nome Activity: Cold Weather Rescue and First Aid Equipment: Each troop must provide two 6-8 poles, one 25 x ¼ rope, one tarp or blanket, leg splints, padding & ties. Inner tubes will be provided at the station. Method: A scout from each troop will sit in or lie down on the inner tube at a predetermined distance from the troop. At the signal, the troop must rescue the scout by tying a bowline knot on the 25 rope, throwing the loop to the scout on the inner tube (who will put the loop around his torso under his armpits) and dragging the scout back to the shore. The troop will then dress the scout s broken leg using the splints, padding and ties. The troop will then assemble an emergency stretcher using the two poles and the tarp or blanket and carry the injured scout a marked distance of 25 feet. Scoring The event is timed. The troop with the fastest time wins. An additional 20 points will be awarded to each troop that successfully rescues the injured scout (i.e., completes the course). Notes: 10 seconds will be added to the time if the bowline is not tied correctly, if the injured scout does not slip the bowline loop under his armpits, if the leg splint is done incorrectly, or for each time the injured scout is dropped during the inner tube rescue or the stretcher carry. 5
Scout Pack List Scouts should dress in layers to keep warm; this includes socks. Layers of clothing next to the skin should be changed at least daily because sweat makes them wet, and wet clothing can quickly get chilled. Cotton is not appropriate for underclothing, socks, or shirts because when wet it provides no insulation at all. All clothing (and all personal gear) should be labeled with scout s first and last name. Personal Gear/Clothing Cold weather sleeping bag (Rated at 10 degrees or lower. If you only have a sleeping bag that is rated at 20 degrees or higher, bring two of them and place one inside the other or bring a bag and a liner or a fleece/wool blanket.) Sleeping pad Pillow Sleeping clothes (loose flannel recommended) 2 long-sleeved shirts 2 sweat shirts Long underwear 4 pairs of socks (wool recommended) 2 pairs of underwear Warm coat Snow pants (bring two pair if possible) Snow boots 2 pairs of gloves/mittens (with liners if possible) Warm hat or beanie that covers ears Water bottle Flash light Scout book Pen Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.) Duffle bag or large back pack for belongings Whatever food you are required to bring (Often troops provide one meal and have scouts bring their own for the other.) Mess kit and utensils (unless troop chooses to provide paper goods and plastic utensils) Optional (optional) Personal Items Hand/feet warmers Sunglasses Knife (must be folding blade, preferably locking blade, no sheath knives allowed) Snacks Lip balm Camera Please leave cell phones and electronic devices at home. You will not be able to use them during the camp and they run a high risk of getting wet. 6
Troop Pack List Troop tents Tarps to go under tents Klondike Sled (fully loaded as outlined) 2 gallons of water per person (There will be no water available at this camp.) Food for dinner and/or breakfast (if troop is providing food) Camp stove if needed Matches or lighter Pots, pans, utensils that are needed Dish soap and cloth or sponge Hand soap or sanitizer Trash bags Optional Troop Items Snacks Paper goods and plastic utensils (unless all are bringing mess kits) Fire barrel (must be a minimum 18 off the ground) Fire wood Shovel Lantern Troop flag 7
Camp Info What to bring: See personal and troop packing lists, of course. Each youth and adult must bring a completed BSA Annual Health and Medical Form, parts A and B (no doctor physical required). Each youth must bring an Activity Consent Form signed by a parent/guardian. The District will not ask for these items, but you should have them on hand in the event a medical need arises in your own troop. Meals: Troops must provide their own food, stoves, and any equipment needed to prepare/cook dinner on Friday night and breakfast on Saturday morning. Some troops provide a meal and have the scouts bring the other meal. Fire: Troops may have a small camp fire at their campsites ONLY if you bring a metal fire barrel that is 18 off the ground. You must bring your own firewood. Please do not cut down trees, cut off branches or gather any firewood near the camp sites. Fire must be attended at all times. It must be fully extinguished at night, and you must haul out all ashes and partially burnt wood. Trash: Please haul out any trash from your troop. Leave No Trace! BSA Registration All youth participants must be registered with BSA. If a youth is not registered, please fill out the BSA Youth Application form and submit to the Heber Scout Office. Youth Protection All leaders must be current with their Youth Protection training. Go to my.scouting.org. Create an account, and complete training online. Two Deep Leadership Every troop in camp must be under the supervision of its own two-deep leadership. Two registered adult leaders, or one registered adult and a parent of a participating Scout, one of whom must be at least 21 years of age or older are required for all trips or outings. The second adult must be at least 18 years of age. Adult leaders need to be in camp at all times to assume responsibility for the Scouts from their troop. To better handle the responsibility of leadership, we recommend one additional adult leader over age 21 for each 8-10 boys. 8
Jordanelle State Park The Klondike competition field is immediately south of the Hailstone marina parking area (see circle on map below). Parking should be in designated stalls along the road or in the parking lot. We will be camping at or near the numbered designated pavilions along the shore line. Since we expect to be camping on top of snow, there is reasonable flexibility in exact locations where you pitch your tents. 9
Winter Camping Tips Be Prepared! Somehow we always manage to pick the coldest weekend of the year for the Klondike Derby. Be prepared! Make sure that you have a good knowledge of the signs of frostbite and hypothermia. You should be able to recognize it in others and in yourself. Tell someone right away if you or another scout are showing signs of cold-related problems. Keep your hands and feet warm, and it will help the rest of your body to stay warm. If your hands or feet are cold, put on more layers, dry gloves, and a hat! How to Keep from Getting COLD: o Clean - Dirty clothes lose their loft and get you cold. o Overheat - Never get sweaty. Strip off layers to stay warm but not too hot. o Lots of Loose Layers - Dress in synthetic layers for easy temperature control. o Dry - Wet clothes and sleeping bags lose their insulation. Clothing The 3 W s of layering: o Wicking inside layer (polypropylene material as long underwear and also sock liner) o Warmth middle layer(s) (fleece or wool) o Wind/Water outer layer (Gor-Tex or nylon) Avoid wearing cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture. Staying dry is the key to staying warm. Air is an excellent insulator and by wearing several layers of clothes you will keep warm. Bring a change of clothing and two pairs of socks per day. If possible, bring an extra pair of boots, gloves, snow pants and coat. Scouts often get wet on Friday night while setting up camp and during evening activities. It is good to be able to put on dry snow gear on Saturday morning before the activities begin. You can put a couple of long-lasting hand warmers into your boots after you take them off. This will help your boots to dry out during the night. Staying Warm at Night Dress right while sleeping! o Change into clean, dry clothes before bed. Put any additional clothes for the next day in your bag with you. o Your body makes moisture and your clothes hold it in - by changing into dry clothes you will stay warmer and it will help keep the inside of your sleeping bag dry. o Wearing wool socks and long underwear (tops and bottoms) in the sleeping bag is OK. o Wear a beanie to bed, even if you have a mummy bag. Sleeping Bag and Pad o Use a sleeping bag that is appropriate for the conditions. Two +20 F sleeping bags, one inside the other will work to lower the rating of both bags. o Use a sleeping bag liner. There are silk and fleece liners that go inside a sleeping bag. They will lower your sleeping bag s rating by up to 10 degrees. o If you don t have a liner, bring a fleece throw or blanket and wrap yourself in it and then get inside the sleeping bag. o Most cold weather bags are designed to trap heat. The proper way to do this is to pull the drawstrings until the sleeping bag is around your face, not around your neck. If the bag 10
also has a draft harness, make sure to use it above the shoulders and it snugs up to your neck to keep cold air from coming in and to keep warm air from going out. o Keep your mouth and nose outside of the bag. Moisture from your breath collecting in your bag is a quick way to get real cold. Keep the inside of the bag dry. o Put a trash bag over the bottom half of your sleeping bag to help hold in the heat. A zipped up coat pulled over the foot of a sleeping bag can also provide an extra layer of insulation. o You can toss some hand warmers into your sleeping bag before you get in. Some will last 8 hours. o Don t sleep directly on the ground. Sleep on a closed cell foam pad. o Cots and air mattresses are not recommended. Food and Water Troops must bring plenty of WATER, and drink a lot. (Bring two gallons per person.) It s easy to get dehydrated in the winter. You aren t visibly sweating, so you don t think to drink water, but since the air is so dry, you lose a LOT of water through breathing. Fill cook pots with water before going to sleep. In the morning, your jugs/thermoses of water may be frozen. It s easy to thaw if the frozen water is already in a pot. Eat plenty of carbs. 11
