On the Klondike Trail Years ago, during the great gold strikes in Alaska, brave men raced across the frozen tundra in search of riches, fame, and fortune. Some reached their goal and others perished in the trackless cold, never to be seen again. The challenge has remained long after the memory of men and gold have faded. The Klondike Derby is a test of Scout skills, knowledge and patrol teamwork. What better way to challenge Scouts than by asking them Be Prepared? Hey, it's also a log of fun. Each sled team of 5-8 Scouts (or up to 10 for the Webelos) will be given a map and a before they set out on the trail. They will follow the map and travel from city to city in search of gold. Each city will have a mayor who will give the patrol a problem to solve. Nuggets will be given for skill and Scout spirit. You must stop for lunch in the nearest city, and remember, lunch will also be scored. Always watch out for bandits! Answer their questions and they won t take any of your gold. The good bandits might even give you some gold. The total nuggets earned by the team will be kept by the team leader. They must be turned in at headquarters at the end of the Derby for scouring. Team work and spirit count as much as skill. All Scouts should be prepared to demonstrate or have knowledge of the following subjects: hiking, first aid, camping, communications, emergency preparedness and any basic Scout skill found in your handbook. Going above and beyond or demonstrating advanced mastery of skill sill usually earn your patrol bonus nuggets. 4

Leaders Information Unit Leaders Take Note It is not necessary to camp overnight to fully participate int eh Klondike Derby. Camping is optional and is up to each unit. But camping does add to the Klondike experience. Lunch preparation is part of the day's program events. Lunch should be planned and prepared by Scouts, not leaders. So grab your sleds and head onto the course. Lunch will be judged as part of the competition, so ensure it is hot, healthy, and will sustain the Scouts while on the trail. Please attempt to carpool as much as possible and keep the number of parked vehicles to a minimum. Parking is very limited. No RV's, campers, or trailers will be allowed. Check-in must be done as a units! Anyone wishing to participate in the event must arrive by 8AM Saturday. It is impossible for the derby volunteers to know where a units is on the course. Remember that the Klondike Derby is about the Scouts and is a test of the Scout's preparedness, not the leaders. Leaders are welcome to hang out by each cities' fire while the patrol completes the task at each city, but the Scouts should be encouraged to participate as a patrol. There is NO POWER available at camp. Lodge is Closed to troops on Friday and Saturday night, also closed on Sunday. Leaders Checklist Completed registration with payment (Before January 20, 2016) Completed camp roster (Bring with unit at check-in) Trip Permit (Required at registration) Ensure that your Scouts are adequately prepared for harsh, cold, wet weather. Plan to check-in as a unit Patrol size must be 5-8 scouts (Webelos sled teams may have as many as 10 Scouts and accompanied by at least 2 adults) Remember to remind your adults and leadership that the Klondike Derby is a competition among Scouts, not adults. 5

Important Points to Remember Camping space is limited. Remember to set up camp in a small area. Be courteous to other Troops. Arrange the patrols with enough space to camp by the patrol method. Set up a warming tent to serve all patrols. Your warming tent should be complete with a good firewood supply, warm drinking water and a stool for sitting and removing wet boots. Also, please display patrol name and unit number, first aid kit, roster and trip permit. To gain protection from the wind, dig tents down into the snow or pile up snow walls. Pitch tents so that the wind does not blow smoke or snow into them. Be sure that the tents are anchored securely. If you use hay under your tents, it must be removed or completely scattered before you leave the derby site. Safety first! Us the buddy system at all times. Have a shakedown before leaving for the derby. DRESS FOR THE CONDITIONS! Clothing and equipment list for winter camping can be found in your Scout book and nobody will be allowed on the course wearing cotton clothing or tennis shoes. After selecting a campsite, please advise headquarters of your unit's location. 1. NO FIRES ALLOWED ON THE GROUND. Make sure you have enough an elevated burn barrel (so ground is not scorched), sufficient firewood and water. A unit must collect and haul out any ashes or extra firewood. Due to limited parking available on-site, there will be no vehicle access to the campsites. Please unload/load quickly, in the drop-off zone, and proceed directly to the parking are, following all directions of parking crew. Please carpool to help conserve space. Cities must be followed in the order listed on the map. If you loose your map you can purchase a new one at headquarters. This will cost you a few nuggets. 6

On Each Sled Each patrol needs a sled. The sled must be able to carry one rider and be of solid construction. See the suggested plans for ideas, or come up with your own. It must fly the patrol flag and unit number. All sleds that are new to this year's derby become eligible for award and will be judged for craftsmanship and ingenuity. Remember that our local winters are unpredictable and modifications to sleds (like wheels) to match conditions are not discouraged. All patrols should be prepared with a patrol yell. Each sled must carry the following equipment Water bottle/canteen (one per Scout) Food (Lunch MUST BE COOKED on the trail and WILL ALSO BE SCORED by the city's mayor. Plan hot, nutritious meals and leave no trace of having cooked there to score well. NO FIRES WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE GROUND. Patrols must provide their own fire container and pack out all ashes, or cook with a stove. Don't forget patrol trail snacks.) Ax or saw Lashing twine (100' or so) Scout knife Extra dry socks (one pair per Scout) Scout handbook (Webelos should also bring a Webelos book) Compass Notebook and pen or pencil Mess kit Matches (waterproof) and dry tinder Flint and steel fire starting kit Patrol first-aid kit w/ splint material Shelter building material 6' length of rope, 1/4 or larger (one per Scout) Hot cocoa mix and cups Bundle of dry firewood (enough for both fire building and cooking lunch) Shovel Scout staves (poles 1 to 2 diameter and 6' long, one per Scout) Blanket Candle Positive attitude (bring enough to share) 7

Webelos Information All Webelos and adult leaders are invited to attend the David Thompson/Old Missions District Klondike Derby. Each den or patrol must have a minimum of two adults with them at all times. Webelos units should plan on the younger Scout participation for the day only. It is imperative that prescribed BSA camping rules be followed and they do not allow Webelos to camp at the Klondike. Webelos groups should plan on arriving early Saturday morning. You are encouraged to stay for the awards and closing campfire. Please bring your Pack flag to add to our avenue of flags near the headquarters building. Each Webelos den or patrol will face several tasks as they travel from city to city. Please keep in mind that this is a learning experience for the Webelos Scouts. They are encouraged to do their best at all cities. Remember that nuggets are given for team work and spirit!! Enjoy the day, the outdoors, and the fun!! WEBELOS ONE-DAY EQUIPMENT LIST Two extra pairs of socks (plan on them getting wet and changing) Snow pants, boots, jacket, gloves, and hat Lunch-time food and trail snacks Each den or patrol is encouraged to carry both a Webelos handbook and a Scout handbook Don't forget the items on the sled equipment list 8
