We hpe yu are getting excited fr yur adventure! ITINERARY The idea behind ur Orca Lite tur is t get yu ut int the heart f the realm f the killer whale but with a mre budget friendly price tag. This tur is geared twards ur kindred adventurus spirits: families, backpackers, sl travelers, shestring wanderers. As well, the shrter duratin f the tur (4 days as ppsed t ur 6 day expeditins) may fit mre easily int busy travel schedules. The Spirit f the West Adventures Van will leave Quadra Island the mrning the tur starts t transprt us t histric Telegraph Cve n nrthern Vancuver Island. Frm here we have immediate access t ne f the richest and mst diverse areas n ur cast. Mst f British Clumbia s 300 resident Orcas return t this area every summer t eat, sleep, play, and rub their bdies n sme f the small pebble beaches f Jhnstne Strait. In additin t Orcas, the kayaker must keep his r her eyes peeled fr the large and majestic Humback whale, the speedy Dall s prpise, r perhaps fr a large grup f cavrting dlphins. The lwer cst f this trip means a few less frills, a mre basic menu and n water taxi transprtatin but nthing less than the highest standards when it cmes t yur guides, tp-f-the-line gear, industry leading pre and pst trip service, and mst imprtantly, plenty f fun and adventure! DAY PRIOR We hst a pre-trip meeting at 6:00 pm in the lunge at The Herit Bay Inn and Herns Restaurant n Quadra Island. This meeting gives us a chance t answer any questins yu may have and fr yu t meet yur guides and fellw kayakers. If yu are unable t make this meeting, please call us the day befre t cnfirm the exact departure time and lcatin. DAY 1 Travel apx. 2.5 hurs frm Quadra Island / Campbell River t Telegraph Cve by vehicle. Here we will enjy a picnic lunch and a visit t the Killer Whale Interpretive Center, als knwn as the Bnes Prject. The Bnes

3 Prject is an incredible museum displaying the skeletns f many marine mammals fund n the BC cast and much mre. With caching frm ur guides, we will pack up all f ur gear int ur kayaks and, after a safety briefing and rientatin t kayaking, head ut int the waters f Jhnstne Strait. DAYS 2 & 3 Our rute and schedule fr the Orca Lite tur are entirely flexible. This allws ur guides t custmise the trip depending n weather cnditins, campsite availability, grup preference and wildlife viewing pprtunities. This is a true expeditin style trip we will be self-sufficient, carrying everything we need frm camp t camp. Hwever, we may decide t stay at ne campsite fr mre than ne night, which saves time taken by camp set-up and break-dwn, and allws us t explre the area in a bit mre depth. DAY 4 This is ur last day f explratin. After we break camp, we will paddle back t Telegraph Cve in the mrning t meet ur transprtatin back t Campbell River and Quadra Island. RETURN TIME Our apprx. return time t Campbell River and Quadra Island is between 4 and 6 pm. hwever due t the high number f variables with wilderness travel we recmmend that yu plan t stay in the area fr this night t avid unnecessarily stressful cmplicatins shuld ur return be delayed by smething ut f ur cntrl. MEETING LOCATIONS PRE-TRIP MEETING THE HERIOT BAY INN ON QUADRA ISLAND 6PM THE EVENING PRIOR TO YOUR TOUR Once n Quadra Island, fllw signs t Herit Bay and the Crtes Island ferry. This is West Rad. Fllw all the way t the end; curve left nce at the Crtez ferry line up. The Inn and Pub is right n the water at the end f West Rad. PLEASE NOTE: if yu cannt make the pre trip meeting, please call us n the day prir t departure. CAMPBELL RIVER IN FRONT OF THE VISITOR CENTER AT THE TYEE PLAZA 8:20 AM The Tyee Plaza is cnsidered the centre f Campbell River. If yu are traveling nrth alng Hwy 19, cntinue int dwntwn Campbell River and turn right shrtly after passing thrugh the secnd set f traffic lights. If yu are traveling suth n Hwy 19 cntinue until yu see the Plaza n the right hand side, just past McDnalds. TELEGRAPH COVE TOUR START - DAY ONE Yu can meet either n Quadra Island r in Campbell River. If meeting in Campbell River, please call ur ffice t let us knw. QUADRA ISLAND THE HERIOT BAY INN PARKING LOT 7:00 AM Fllw West Rad all the way t the end; curve left nce at the Crtez Ferry line up. The Inn is right n the water. AT NORTH ISLAND KAYAKS OFFICE (near the bat launch ramp n the right-hand side f the cve.) BETWEEN 12:00 AND 1 PM The twn f Telegraph Cve is apprximately a 2.5 hur drive nrth f Campbell River n Hwy 19. Yu will see signs marking the right-hand turn ff the highway. Fllw this rad and the signs fr Telegraph Cve fr apprx. 15 min. There is a fee fr parking yur vehicle in Telegraph Cve.

4 WHAT TO BRING On the Orca Lite Tur we will be packing everything int ur kayaks each day in rder t travel t ur next campsite. While space is limited, please ensure yu bring enugh t stay warm and dry. The fllwing is a list f suggested items that shuld keep yu a happy camper. The key is t pack int small cmpact bags which we will prvide. We will als prvide sme tips and tricks fr packing when yu arrive. Sea kayaks are basically watertight, althugh small amunts f water may get in thrugh the rudder lines and hatches. In the event f rain r drpping gear in the water we try t keep things as waterprf as pssible. We prvide yu with waterprf strage bags als knwn as dry bags (these will be given t yu at the pre-tur meeting r the fllwing mrning if yu are unable t attend). If yu prefer t bring yur wn dry bags, please nte the largest bag shuld nt be larger than a sleeping bag r 20 litres; several small bags are best. We will prvide ne 5 litre, tw 10 litre and ne 20 litre dry bags fr yu t pack int. Additinal bags may be available depending n space in the kayaks. The 5 litre bag is gd fr string small items such as cameras, sunscreen, glasses, etc. The larger nes will be used fr string the rest f yur clthing. Please see ur suggestins fr waterprfing yur sleeping bag. Shes can generally be packed lse in the kayak. All participants will als pack sme f the grup gear and fd in their kayak. Dn t wrry, it always lks like an impssible muntain f stuff t fit in the kayaks, but with sme perseverance and caching frm yur guides we always manage t fit everything. TEMPERATURES Please nte that ur summer temperatures frm July until September are generally quite cmfrtable with temperatures frm degrees Celsius / degrees Fahrenheit. It s nt uncmmn t find mid day summers ht enugh t want t cl ff in the cean! June and later September will have cler temperatures, and at ANY TIME OF YEAR we can have rain & wind, with temperatures ccasinally as lw as 13 C / 55 F. S, we say it is best t cme prepared fr any type f weather. PLEASE NOTE WHAT WE PROVIDE - ALL KAYAKS & SAFETY GEAR - TENT & SLEEPING PADS - DRY BAGS If yu have yur wn gear and wuld prefer t use it n yur tur, please bring it t the pre-trip meeting s that we can make sure it is suitable and meets safety requirements. The fllwing is a list f suggested items t bring alng. If yu have any cncerns r questins abut the list, please dn t hesitate t cntact us. Sleeping bag A 3-seasn synthetic bag is recmmended. Dwn bags will wrk but please take extra care t waterprf. If yu are uncertain abut whether r nt yu have the apprpriate bag just give us a call r check with yur lcal utdr stre. If yu d nt have a sleeping bag r wuld prefer nt t travel with ne, these may be rented fr $25 plus tax. Please reserve in advance. T waterprf yur sleeping bag line a cmpressin sack with a heavy duty garbage bag. Press the air ut f the bag with yur knee and then keep cmpact with the cmpressin sac which can be purchased at any utdr shp. This als helps keep yur bag small fr travel. Wetshes A pair that can get wet such as sturdy full strapped sandals (such as Keens, Tevas r Chacs), neprene bties, crcs, r rubber bts. Please avid flip-flps/thngs. Spirit f the West has a wide range f rubber bt sizes (yuth

5 men s size 13) available t brrw free f charge if yu dn t have yur wn wet shes r have limited space in yur luggage. There will be an pprtunity t try n bts at the pre-trip meeting. Camp ftwear An additinal pair f ftwear that yu plan t keep dry. Runners, trainers r light hikers are great. Hat A sun hat such as a baseball hat r fullbrimmed hat as well as a wl r fleece warm hat fr evenings r cler days. Sunglasses & sunscreen (stred in a Ziplc bag) A must fr prtectin frm sun and glare ff f the water. Safety crds n yur glasses are highly recmmended. Bathing suit Medicatin If yu are bringing medicatin please ensure that... 1) The name and expiry date f drug is n the cntainer; 2) Yu have the detailed instructins f yur dsage and frequency; 3) It is packed in a water and sunprf cntainer; 4) Yu bring a full extra dsage f yur medicatin in a separate cntainer t leave with yur guide, in case yu misplace r lse yurs, r are weathered in. If yu are flying, please pack all necessary medicatin in yur carry-n luggage. This will help eliminate sme stress shuld yur checked bags be misplaced in transit. Persnal items Tthbrush, tthpaste, bidegradable sap/shamp, washclth, feminine hygiene prducts, hairbrush, etc. Msquit repellent Insects are nt a significant cncern fr us in ur castal ecsystem, hwever fr thse unused t insects r with particular sensitivities sme repellent may cme in handy. Ziplc bags & several large garbage bags We will prvide yu with dry bags, but these cme in handy fr transprting laundry and/r wet clthing. Small flashlight r headlamp With spare batteries. Headlamps are preferable as they allw fr hands free peratin Water bttle Bike bttles r Nalgene-style bttles wrk best. Camera In a waterprf bag r case, r yu may use ur dry bags. Glves (ptinal) Biking glves wrk well t prtect yur hands frm blisters. If yu are really cncerned abut cld hands, and are paddling in the spring r fall seasns, yu may want t invest in neprene glves r pgies. Beverages We supply a wide range f teas and cffee as well as juices. Yu are welcme t bring alng sda pps r alchlic beverages if yu chse t. Please nte hwever that we d expect ur guests t cnsume alchlic beverages respnsibly and strictly enfrce a n alchl n the water plicy. Fishing gear (ptinal) Make sure yu have a valid B.C. fishing license. These can be purchased n-line at rec/licence-permis/index-eng.htm Bk r jurnal Binculars (ptinal) Gratuity fr yur guides at yur wn discretin. CLOTHING Clthing shuld be suitable fr the time f year, bearing in mind that it culd becme cld and wet at any time f year. Layering is the best way t regulate bdy temperature and maintain warmth. We suggest aviding cttn (except fr thse ht days). Cttn has n insulatin value when wet. An inner material that wicks misture frm the bdy and gives a cmfrtable dry

6 feeling even while wet is the best first layer (Plyprpylene, Lycra, Nyln, Plyester). A synthetic material such as fleece r pile makes the best secnd layer t prvide warmth. Wl is als suitable. Lightweight lng underwear 2 pairs, helps t keep yu warm at night r as a base layer during the day. We recmmend ne set fr kayaking and ne set which is reserved fr sleeping and always stays dry. Rain jacket & rain pants Fr the unexpected nasty weather. T test yur waterprfness jump in the shwer and see if yu stay dry! (we re serius!) (If yu wuld like t rent/hire raingear frm us, please reserve in advance f the tur. Tps and bttms can be rented fr $25 plus tax fr the set). Hwever, n land, especially with the increasing number f kayakers venturing int new territry and seeking the un-traveled path, we must respect ur surrundings and be aware f ur impact n these envirnmentally sensitive areas. Spirit f the West Adventures makes every effrt t ensure we leave ur area as we fund it, if nt better. Where d we wash? Are there tilets? These are sme f the mst cmmn cncerns but questins nt always asked. All f ur camping sites are in wilderness settings and therefre are basic and rustic a true wilderness experience. On ur expeditin style turs we use a prtable tilet system set up in a private lcatin in cnjunctin with pit tilets when available. We use salt water fr washing as fresh water is limited and reserved fr drinking. Yur guide will discuss prper eliminatin techniques and suggest a suitable private area. Yur guide will carry a tiletry bag cmplete with tilet paper, Ziplc and paper bags as well as hand sanitizer. At the Paddler s Inn there are flush tilets and a ht fresh water shwer. If yu have any cncerns while n tur please d nt be shy t ask yur guide they are very used t making sure everyne feels cmfrtable while in the wilderness.

What is the minimum age required t jin ur turs? We cater t all ages f adventurers. Kids age 5 t 12 are encuraged t jin the Family Orca Turs which have been designed with the needs f yunger kayakers. Fr all f ur ther regularly scheduled turs we prefer a minimum age f 12. If yur child is almst 12 r yur family has a gd deal f experience kayaking and camping we d ccasinally make acceptins. We like t assess each case individually. We can als rganize private, custm style adventures.feel free t call us and we wuld be happy t discuss the ptins. What is the average age f ur guests? We have guests frm age 5 and up n ur family turs and ages 12 t 85 jining ur regularly scheduled turs. The average age ranges between age 30 t 65. Each tur and tur date is different, but we usually get a gd mix f ages. Fr thse cncerned with being in their lder years r anyne unsure f which tur fits them best, we welcme yu t cntact us and we will be happy t help yu find the perfect trip. Are there any single supplement fees if I am travelling n my wn? There are NO single supplements. We encurage sl travelers t jin us and ften have several sl travelers n each tur. It shuld be n prblem t have yur wn tent and yu will have access t bth single and duble kayaks. Can yu accmmdate fd allergies/special diets? Our fd preparatin crew are masters at accmmdating dietary restrictins. We are able t ffer gluten-free, vegetarian, pescatarian, dairy light and vegan menus with prir ntice. Other dietary requests may invlve additinal charges and need t be discussed in advance with ur fd crew. We are NOT a nut-free facility. Will I cmfrtably fit in the kayaks? If yu are ver 6ft (182cms) tall, if yu are n the mre petite side f things, have larger hips r weigh ver 250lbs (115 kg) we have certain kayaks that may wrk best fr yu. Please give us a call and we can ensure we have the apprpriate kayak available fr yu. What is included in the tur csts? We supply everything that yu will need fr kayaking and camping except fr a few persnal items such as yur clthing, tiletries, sleeping bag and rain gear (sleeping bags and rain gear can be rented if needed). We pick yu up free f charge frm yur accmmdatin n Quadra Island n the mrning the trip starts and we will drp yu ff there when the tur is finished. We prvide all meals frm mrning snack n day ne t lunch n the last day. Nn-alchlic beverages including a wide variety f teas, cffee, juices, ht chclate are prvided. Alchl is nt prvided and yu are welcme t bring yur favurite wine, beer r pp t enjy respnsibly. Our adventures are designed t cater t all levels f experience and abilities frm first-timer t expert paddler. We have several different styles and lengths f turs s that everyne can find the perfect trip. If yu are new t kayaking and camping check ut ur basecamping style turs- the Whales and Wilderness Glamping and Jhnstne Strait Ultimate turs. If yu are lking fr mre rustic camping and mre paddling check ut ur expeditin style turs; the Jhnstne Strait Expeditin, Orca Lite, Nuchatlitz, Deslatin Sund r Great Bear Rainfrest Turs. D I need t be in great shape fr this trip? The majrity f ur adventures are nt cnsidered t be verly strenuus r physically demanding and therefre d nt require a high level f fitness. Each tur is slightly different in its demands s if yu are cncerned, please d cntact us. As a general rule, yu need t be capable f a few hurs f mderate exercise each day and be cmfrtable with the uneven grund f a wilderness envirnment. Please keep in mind that gd general health will g a lng way twards the enjyment f yur tur. Mst imprtant thugh is an adventurus spirit. Hw much paddling d we d each day? Paddling time will vary depending n the trip, ur destinatin, weather cnditins and the grup s abilities and desires. Generally, we travel between 4-6 hurs a day n ur expeditin turs, nt including breaks and lunch We set a pace which is manageable and enjyable fr all. Hw stable are the kayaks? What is the likelihd f flipping ver? The kayaks we use are stable and designed fr cmfrt. Yur guides will give yu thrugh instructin n hw t safely use and enjy the kayaks and what t d in case f a capsize. Fr thse cncerned abut capsizing, the duble kayaks are

8 slightly mre stable than the singles and we have a variety f bth singles and dubles n every trip. The likelihd f a capsize is minimal and if it des happen yur well-trained guides will be there befre yu knw it t help. What happens if my kayak flips ver? In the rare event f a capsize, all f ur guides are trained in rescue prcedures in rder t quickly and efficiently get yu back in yur bat. At this pint, we will take yu t the nearest shreline t change int sme warm clthing and carry n with ur jurney when yu are ready. While we are ut n the water, it is f the utmst imprtance that the grup stays tgether fr safety. If the weather turns bad? Will I be cmfy and warm? Our weather in the Pacific Nrthwest is generally pleasant frm May thrugh until September. In the Jhnstne Strait & Brughtn Archipelag area, the weather will generally be cler than what yu may see n the frecast fr Campbell River smetimes by as much as 10 degrees. Fg is very cmmn n summer mrnings, hwever, this nearly always clears at midday. Althugh it is uncmmn, it can rain in the summer, be prepared fr any type f weather and yu will stay cmfrtable. Layering is the key. It allws yu t put n r take ff layers while n the water if yu need t. If yu are very cncerned abut the weather then we recmmend ur base-camping style turs as these campsites have cvered eating and lunge areas as well as dry tents t cme hme t at the end f every day. On ur expeditin style turs we carry tarps but we are a little mre at the mercy f mther nature in these mre rustic style campsites. What srt f wildlife might we see? The diversity and abundance f wildlife in the Pacific Nrthwest is ne f ur great privileges. Frm the rich marine life f clurful plants and invertebrates, seabirds, shrebirds, waterfwl, mink, tter, seals, sea lins, dlphins, and whales, t the land animals f deer, raccns, cugars, wlves, and bears, we are bund t see smething. Fr thse with an eye fr eagles take nte that they are mst prminent in the earlier mnths befre the salmn migratin in the late summer/early fall. Fr thse keen t see humpback whales- yu are in luck. The ppulatin f humpbacks in ur area is ding well and we are frtunate t ften see these whales any time f the year. If Orcas are yur main pririty then we recmmend traveling between mid-july and mid-september. While it is pssible t see rcas utside f these times, we see them with the greatest abundance and frequency during this peak perid. Please just remember that wildlife is just that wild and we cannt cntrl sightings. That said the whales are the icing n the cake in this stunning, rich and diverse area. Where is the best place t see rcas/killer whales? On ur turs t Jhnstne Strait and Blackfish Sund, which includes the Whales and Wilderness Glamping Tur, the Jhnstne Strait Ultimate, Family Orca Tur and Orca Lite turs, we stand a high chance f seeing whales, especially between mid-july and mid-september. Understandably we cannt guarantee what nature will dic- tate, but we can tell yu that this area has ne f the highest cncentratins f Killer Whales n earth and this is where they spend their summer hliday. Sme trips view the whales frm the kayaks, sme while traveling n ur water taxi r frm ur campsites n the shre and sme see all f the abve. Hw clse t we paddle t whales & ther wildlife? We d ur very best t prvide awesme sightings f whales but all the while ensuring that we d nt disrupt the natural behaviur f all the wildlife we encunter. We abide by the Canadian whale watching regulatins which means we d nt apprach killer whales (rcas) any clser than 200 meters (656 ft) and all ther cetaceans n clser than 100 meters (328 ft). T learn mre abut hw we d ur best t minimize ur impacts n whales check ut nimmsa.rg the Nrth Island Marine Mammal Stewardship Assciatin. Yur trip fees help t fund whale research and cnservatin effrts thrugh the NIMMSA fund which Spirit f the West Cntributes t. What is the camp setup like? All f ur campsites are in wilderness settings, and shelter is prvided by the tents and tarps we carry with us. We seek ut sites with beautiful surrundings and thse that ffer slitude; these are all undevelped and may be clearings in the frest r space n the beach. There may be times (n ccasin) when we are camping next t anther grup f kayakers. Campsite chice will be based n weather cnditins, rute chice and grup size and preference. Our first r last night (depending n which directin yur tur travels) will be spent at Paddler s Inn, a rustic flating kayak ldge deep in the Brughtn Archipelag. Where d we wash and are there tilets? There is very little fresh water t be fund. Therefre, seawater is yur best bet fr washing up. Please use bidegradable, envirnmentally friendly sap brands. Tilet facilities are nt cmmn in mst wilderness settings, althugh sme areas may have pit tilets. We als carry a prtable tilet system. Yur guide will generally designate an area that wrks fr ensuring yur privacy. We are very accustmed t making sure all f ur guests feel cmfrtable and infrmed please feel free t ask us any questins yu might have, befre r during yur tur. Where can I leave my luggage I wn t need n trip? If yu are staying n Quadra Island, many f the B&Bs ffer free luggage strage. Alternatively, guests staying n either Quadra Island r in Campbell River have the ptin f string excess luggage at ur ffice. What is the industry standard fr tipping my guides? If yu wuld like t express yur appreciatin thrugh a gratuity, such recgnitin wuld be enthusiastically received. The industry standard fr tipping is apprx. 10% per persn f the trip cst. All tips received will be cllected and disbursed amngst yur guides & basecrew by the trip leader.
