We hpe yu are getting excited fr yur unique vacatin. ITINERARY Our adventure begins the mment we step ff the dcks f Campbell River and Quadra Island nt ur high speed water taxi. Relax in cmfrt as we whisk yu up the scenic waterways f the Inside Passage t ur remte wilderness camp n the edge f Blackfish Sund. Yu can meet either n Quadra Island r at Way West Castal Ventures & Water taxi in Campbell River. If meeting in Campbell River, please call ur ffice t let us knw. Spirit f the West Adventures is based n Quadra Island (a 10 minute ferry ride frm Campbell River) and this is where ur tur starts. We highly recmmend making Quadra Island a part f yur vacatin plans. Our beautiful island has a whle different and laid back feel t it, cmplete with endless pprtunities fr utdr activities, beaches t relax n, amazing accmmdatins and great lcal artisans. DAY PRIOR A pre-trip meeting at 6pm at the Herit Bay Inn n Quadra Island gives us a chance t answer any questins yu may have, and fr yu t meet yur guides and fellw kayakers. Yur guides will g ver the lgistics f the tur and answer any cncerns yu may have. If yu cannt make it t the meeting, please be sure t call the day befre departure t cnfirm yur arrival. This allws us t cnfirm the exact departure time and lcatin, r t alert yu if there are have been any last minute changes. After meeting ur water taxi and a safety briefing, ur captain takes us up Discvery Passage and safely thrugh the infamus Seymur Narrws, renwned fr its treacherus tidal flws and whirlpls. En rute, sightings f marine life such as prpises, dlphins, sea lins and whales are cmmn. After the 2 1/2 hur jurney we arrive at ur remte wilderness base camp n Blackfish Sund. After settling int ur new surrundings and having lunch we will have a kayak rientatin and discuss safety prcedures befre setting ff n an afternn paddle. We will return in time fr a fresh wild salmn dinner (alternatives f curse fr thse wh d nt eat fish). Enjy the sunset frm the ht tub befre retiring t rest fr mre fun in the mrning.

3 DAY 2 After a hearty camp breakfast we will meet t discuss ur plans fr the day. Our rute and schedule will depend n weather cnditins, wildlife viewing pprtunities and grup preferences. Generally, we set ut in ur kayaks after breakfast and paddle t ne f the area s many pcket beaches fr a picnic lunch befre paddling hme again in time fr sme relaxatin time befre dinner. On ur way, we ll take breaks fr stretching and snacks, and we always take lts f time t explre the intricate shreline. Fr the very brave there is always the ptin f a dip int the chilly waters f Blackfish Sund befre a restrative sak in the ht tub! DAY 3 This mrning we ll kayak the nearby waters and islands befre returning in time fr lunch. In the early afternn we ll be met by ur cvered vessel fr a 3-hur jurney further int Blackfish Sund, Jhnstne Strait r Queen Charltte Strait, giving yu the pprtunity t explre areas beynd the reach f ur kayaks. DAY 4 This is ur last day f explratin. After a final mrning paddle we will pack up ur things and sak up the last bit f tranquility befre the water taxi arrives t transprt us back t Quadra Island and the real wrld nce again. Our apprximate return time t Quadra Island is between 3-5pm, hwever, due t the number f variables in wilderness travel we recmmend that yu plan t stay in the area fr this night t avid unnecessarily stressful cmplicatins shuld ur return be delayed by smething ut f ur cntrl. MEETING LOCATIONS PRE-TRIP MEETING - DAY PRIOR THE HERIOT BAY INN ON QUADRA ISLAND 6PM THE EVENING PRIOR TO YOUR TOUR Once n Quadra Island, fllw signs t Herit Bay and the Crtes Island ferry. This is West Rad. Fllw all the way t the end; curve left nce at the Crtez ferry line up. The Inn and Pub is right n the water at the end f West Rad. PLEASE NOTE: if yu cannt make the pre trip meeting, please call us n the day prir t departure. TOUR START - DAY ONE Yu can meet either in Quadra Island r in Campbell River. If meeting in Campbell River, please call ur ffice t let us knw. QUADRA ISLAND THE HERIOT BAY INN PARKING LOT 7:00AM Fllw West Rad all the way t the end; curve left nce at the Crtez Ferry line up. The Inn is right n the water. THE QUADRA ISLAND FERRY PARKING LOT 7:30AM This is the main ferry terminal n Quadra Island lcated in Quathiaski Cve. Please ensure yu d nt enter the ferry line-up, but instead meet us in the ferry parking lt lcated t the right f the ferry building. Our van shuld be quite bvius, but if yu dn t see us, head t the ramp lcated directly behind the ferry building. This is where we meet ur water taxi. CAMPBELL RIVER WAY WEST COASTAL VENTURES & WATER TAXI 7:30 AM The Way West Water Taxi ffice is lcated at the Discvery Harbur Marina, the largest marina n the Campbell River waterfrnt. T get there frm the Campbell River city centre, travel nrth frm twn alng Hwy 19A. The dck is lcated n the water behind the Superstre stre and shps. Vehicles may be left in the gravel parking lt between Discvery Plaza and the ferry. Take the main ramp dwn t the dcks and the Way West ffice is n yur immediate left. Please check in with the Way West water taxi ffice. Yu will then cme acrss t Quadra Island in the bat t pick up the rest f the grup befre heading ff n yur adventure.

4 PACKING LIST On ur Blackfish Sund basecamping tur we are transprted t ur wilderness base camp by bat which is equipped t carry all f ur passengers, plenty f gear and is specially designed fr safety and cmfrt. With this style f tur we are nt restricted in the amunt f luggage and gear we can bring as ur gear des nt have t fit in the kayaks. Althugh yur gear will be stred in the cabin f the bat, yu may want t waterprf sme items, in the unlikely event that it may get wet while being transferring t and frm bat. At ur glamping paradise n Swansn Island we have dry bags (waterprf bags) that will be given t yu fr use while kayaking. The small dry bags are great fr cameras, sunscreen, and ther small persnal items that yu wuld like t have near yu. The larger nes will be fr yur spare clthing fr the day. TEMPERATURES Please nte that ur summer temperatures frm July until September are generally quite cmfrtable with temperatures frm degrees Celsius / degrees Fahrenheit. It s nt uncmmn t find mid day summers ht enugh t want t cl ff in the cean! June and later September will have cler temperatures, and at ANY TIME OF YEAR we can have rain & wind, with temperatures ccasinally as lw as 13 C / 55 F. S, we say it is best t cme prepared fr any type f weather. Wetshes A pair that can get wet such as sturdy full strapped sandals (such as Keens, Tevas r Chacs), neprene bties, crcs, r rubber bts. Please avid flip-flps/thngs. Spirit f the West has a wide range f rubber bt sizes (yuth men s size 13) available t brrw free f charge if yu dn t have yur wn wet shes r have limited space in yur luggage. There will be an pprtunity t try n bts at the pre-trip meeting. Camp ftwear An additinal pair f ftwear that yu plan t keep dry. Runners, trainers r light hikers are great. Hat A sun hat such as a baseball hat r fullbrimmed hat as well as a wl r fleece warm hat fr evenings r cler days. Sunglasses & sunscreen A must fr prtectin frm sun and glare ff f the water. Safety crds n yur glasses are highly recmmended.

5 Camera In a waterprf bag r case, r yu may use ur dry bags. Bathing suit Fr the ht tub, r brave cean swimmers! Persnal items Tthbrush, tthpaste, bidegradable sap/shamp, washclth, feminine hygiene prducts, hairbrush, etc. Medicatin If yu are bringing medicatin please ensure that 1) The name and expiry date f drug is n the cntainer; 2) Yu have the detailed instructins f yur dsage and frequency; 3) It is packed in a water and sunprf cntainer; 4) Yu bring a full extra dsage f yur medicatin in a separate cntainer t leave with yur guide, in case yu misplace r lse yurs, r are weathered in. If yu are flying, please pack all necessary medicatin in yur carry-n luggage. This will help eliminate sme stress shuld yur checked bags be misplaced in transit. Ziplc bags r ther large plastic bag We will prvide yu with dry bags, but these cme in handy fr transprting laundry and/r wet clthing. Glves (ptinal) Biking glves wrk well t prtect yur hands frm blisters. If yu are really cncerned abut cld hands, and are paddling in the spring r fall seasns, yu may want t invest in neprene glves r pgies. Beverages We supply a wide range f teas and cffee as well as juices. Yu are welcme t bring alng sda pps r alchlic beverages if yu chse t. Please nte hwever that we d expect ur guests t cnsume alchlic beverages respnsibly and strictly enfrce a n alchl n the water plicy. Fishing gear (ptinal) Make sure yu have a valid B.C. fishing license. These can be purchased n-line at rec/licence-permis/index-eng.htm Persnal bks r jurnal Binculars (ptinal) Gratuity fr yur guides at yur wn discretin. CLOTHING Clthing shuld be suitable fr the time f year, bearing in mind that it culd becme cld and wet at any time f year. Layering is the best way t regulate bdy temperature and maintain warmth. We suggest aviding cttn (except fr thse ht days). Cttn has n insulatin value when wet. An inner material that wicks misture frm the bdy and gives a cmfrtable dry feeling even while wet is the best first layer (Plyprpylene, Lycra, Nyln, Plyester). A synthetic material such as fleece r pile makes the best secnd layer t prvide warmth. Wl is als suitable. Rain jacket & rain pants Fr the unexpected nasty weather. T test yur waterprfness jump in the shwer and see if yu stay dry! (we re serius!). If yu wuld like t rent/hire raingear frm us, please reserve in advance f the tur. Tps and bttms can be rented fr $25 plus tax fr the set. Light windprf jacket (ptinal) Lng pants 1 pair f fleece r warm cmfrtable pants. 2 lighter pairs made f a quick drying, synthetic fabric. Athletic style pants (running r yga) are generally apprpriate. Jeans are NOT recmmended fr paddling, but can be warn arund camp. Lightweight lng underwear 2 pairs, helps t keep yu warm at night r as a base layer during the day. We recmmend ne set fr kayaking and ne set which is reserved fr sleeping and always stays dry.

6 Sweaters 2 warm wl r fleece sweaters (ne may be all yu need, but it is nice t have a spare in case ne gets wet). Lng-sleeved nn-cttn shirt (synthetic/wl) - 2 T-shirts 2 r 3. Shrts 1-2 quick dry nyln SANITATION IN THE WILDERNESS The kayak cuts n grves and leaves n scars, as it travels freely thrugh the waters. Hwever, n land, especially with the increasing number f kayakers venturing int new territry and seeking the untraveled path, we must respect ur surrundings and be aware f ur impact n these envirnmentally sensitive areas. Spirit f the West Adventures makes every effrt t ensure we leave ur area as we fund it, if nt better. Where d we wash? Are there tilets? These are sme f the mst cmmn cncerns but questins nt always asked. All f ur camping & glamping sites are in wilderness settings - a true and beautiful wilderness experience. Hwever, as far as camping & glamping ges, this is a relaxed and cmfrtable set-up. With uthuses and shwers with stunning view int the rainfrest r verlking the Pacific cean yu ll feel better than at hme. While ut n ur day excursins with the kayaks, yur guide will discuss prper eliminatin techniques and suggest a suitable private area. Yur guide will carry a tiletry bag cmplete with tilet paper, Ziplc and paper bags as well as hand sanitizer. If yu have any cncerns while n tur please d nt be shy t ask yur guide they are very used t making sure everyne feels cmfrtable while in the wilderness.

On ur guided turs we supply everything that yu will need fr kayaking and camping except fr a few persnal items such as rain gear (these can be rented if needed), yur clthes and tiletries. We are happy t pick yu up free f charge frm yur accmmdatin n Quadra Island n the mrning the trip starts and we will drp yu ff there when the tur is finished. All ther services, transprtatin, fd, gear, etc. while n trip is included in the cst f the tur. Once the tur begins we prvide all meals and nn-alchlic beverages (wide selectin f teas, cffee, juices, ht chclate) frm mrning snack n day ne t lunch n the last day. Yu are welcme t bring yur favurite wine, beer r pp, but this is nt included in the tur price. There is a grcery and liqur stre very clse t the lcatin f the pre-trip meeting if yu wuld like t pick up extra beverages n the evening befre the tur. HOW MUCH KAYAKING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED TO JOIN THIS TRIP? N experience is required fr this kayak tur! Our adventure is fr everyne. Our trips are designed t cater t all levels f experience and abilities. The majrity f peple wh jin ur turs are first time kayakers. All that we ask is that yu welcme adventure with an pen mind and are able t laugh and have fun when encuntering the unexpected. DO I NEED TO BE IN GREAT SHAPE FOR THIS TRIP? N. Our adventures are nt cnsidered t be strenuus r physically demanding, and we d nt require a high level f fitness. We just ask that yu are capa- ble f a few hurs f mderate exercise each day. At camp yu ll find uneven surfaces n frest trails and beaches. Keep in mind that gd general health will g a lng way if we happen t encunter sme strng winds r time restrictins. Mst imprtant is an adventurus spirit. ARE THERE ANY AGE REQUIREMENTS? Spirit f the West caters t all ages f adventurers. Althugh we d prefer a minimum f 12 years fr ur multi-day turs, we like t assess each case individually. Family turs are available fr yunger children, and thse cncerned with being in their lder years are welcmed t cntact us t discuss their physical abilities. HOW MUCH PADDLING IS GENERALLY DONE IN A DAY? Paddling time will vary depending n ur destinatin and the grup s abilities and desires. We typically pack a picnic lunch t enjy n ne f the beaches and then cme back t the camp in time fr dinner and a sak in the ht tub. We paddle at the pace dictated by the grup and take lts f stretch and bathrm breaks. We will cver between 6 and 8 miles a day in ur kayaks n this tur. HOW STABLE ARE THE KAYAKS? WHAT IS THE LIKELIHOOD OF FLIPPING OVER? The kayaks we use n ur turs are stable and designed fr cmfrt. Fr thse a little cncerned, the duble kayaks are slightly mre stable than the singles. The likelihd f a capsize is minimal, and generally nly ccurs in an uncmmn situatin. If fr sme reasn yur kayak flips ver, all f ur guides have ample practice time n the water with rescue prcedures, in rder t quickly and efficiently get yu back in yur bat. At this pint we will take yu t the nearest shre t change int sme warm czy clthing and carry n with ur jurney.

8 WHAT IF THE WEATHER TURNS BAD? WILL I BE COMFORTABLE AND WARM? Our weather in the Pacific Nrthwest is generally pleasant frm May thrugh until the end f September. The temperature will vary slightly depending n when yu visit. In the Blackfish Sund area, the weather will generally be cler than what yu may see n the frecast fr Campbell River smetimes by as much as 10 degrees. Fg is very cmmn n summer mrnings, hwever this nearly always clears at midday t make way fr clear skies and sun. Althugh it is uncmmn, it can rain in the summer. A gd rule f thumb is t be prepared fr any type f weather and yu will stay cmfrtable. Layering is the key, and it allws yu t put n r take ff layers while n the water if needed. Our camp n Swansn Island allws us t kayak nly when we feel like it and in the best lcatins fr explring. This being said it can be quite beautiful t paddle in the rain, ften the winds are lwest during light rains and Spirit f the West ffers yu a gd-quality paddling jacket and pants. If anyne was t get cl, we can take breaks t warm up n a beach fire, r can always return t camp fr a ht shwer, czy times in the ht tub (where yu can cntinue t watch marine wildlife) r t warm up in yur spacius tent. Take a nap under warm blankets, have a ht tea while reading yur favurite bk. WHAT SORT OF WILDLIFE MIGHT WE SEE ON THE TOUR? The diversity and abundance f wildlife in the Pacific Nrthwest is ne f ur privileges. With river run-ff frm the muntains, cean currents, tide rips, eddies and upwelling, these waters are amng the mst prductive n earth. Frm the rich marine life f clurful plants and invertebrates, seabirds, shrebirds, waterfwl, mink, tter, seals, sea lins, dlphins, and whales, t the land animals f deer, raccns, cugars, wlves and bears, we are bund t see smething. Fr thse with an eye fr eagles take nte that they are mst prminent in the earlier mnths befre the salmn migratin in the late summer/early fall. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF SEEING WHALES? WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO SEE WHALES? On ur turs t Blackfish Sund we stand an excellent chance f seeing whales. Understandably we cannt guarantee what nature will dictate, but we can tell yu that this area has ne f the highest cncentratins f whales in British Clumbia and this is where they spend their summer hliday. It is very likely that yu will see them, whether frm yur kayak, while traveling n ur water taxi, n a whale watching bat r frm a beach n the shre. Hearing the blw f a whale even in the distance will create a sensatin f excitement. Humpback whales return t the area arund mid-may, while resident rcas begin t turn up in late June/ early July. Ppulatins are at their highest frm abut mid-july t late August, and begin t taper ff t the beginning f Octber. Nte that in accrdance with industry whale watching regulatins we d nt apprach whales within 100 meters. This is ut f respect fr the whales space and t ensure that we d nt interfere with their natural behaviur. WHAT IS THE CAMP SET UP LIKE? WHERE DO WE WASH AND ARE THERE TOILETS? Our unique glamping camp n Swansn Island in Blackfish Sund ffers the best amenities t make yur stay as cmfrtable and memrable as pssible. Our large kitchen, dining and sitting areas are the hub f ur camp and are sheltered frm rain and sun. We have 8 beautiful, walk-in cttn canvas tents that are large (10 12 ), bright and lcally made here n Vancuver Island. They feature screened drs and windws and are 8 high at the peak, s have ample rm fr standing up and mving arund with ease. The tents are set up n wd platfrms slightly elevated ff the grund. Tw twin beds (r ne king size if pushed tgether) with linens, pillws and duvets are inside each tent. Our wd-fired ht tub is perfect fr saking tired muscles after a day f paddling & explring and the n-demand ht water shwer has ne f the best views in the wrld. Our tilet system is clean and private and easy t use.

9 IS THERE ELECTRICITY AT THE CAMP? We have a limited supply f electricity supplied by slar panels and a battery bank. When the weather is nice, we have mre pwer; when it s nt, we have less. Each f the tents have LED lighting t see at night. Everyne shuld be able t charge a camera battery r phne at least nce while n the trip and pssibly mre, but it s wise t be cnservative with yur batteries t ensure the pwer is there when yu need it (avid using the display unless yu need it, dn t review phts in yur tent at night, keep yur camera ff when nt using it, etc.). HOW MANY PEOPLE SLEEP IN EACH TENT? IF I M TRAVELING SOLO CAN I HAVE MY OWN TENT? The tents are designed fr tw adults, r tw adults and up t tw children. Each tent cntains tw twin beds that can be pushed tgether t make a king size bed if yu prefer. We can als add tw trundle-style beds fr kids if required. We have 8 tents at this camp and it usually is n prblem t have yur wn tent. The exceptin wuld be if we have a large number f sl travelers jining yur particular date. If this was the case we wuld d ur best t pair yu up with a suitable tent mate. We wuld als prvide a privacy wall fr between yur beds in this case. Call us in the ffice if this is a cncern and yu wuld like t see what the cmpsitin f the grup n particular dates is like. I HAVE DIETARY RESTRICTIONS. CAN THESE BE ACCOMMODATED? Yes, we have a masterful crew in the kitchen wh prepare all the fd fr the turs. They are happy t pack fr gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and all srts f dietary requirements. We are nt a nut-free facility, but can d ur best t avid certain allergens. Please call ur ffice if yu have cncerns yu wuld like t discuss further. WHERE CAN I LEAVE MY VEHICLE WHILE ON TOUR? Free parking will be available fr yur vehicle while n tur with us. Many f the accmmdatins n Quadra Island als have free parking included with yur stay. Parking details will be discussed further at the pre-trip meeting. WHERE DO I HAVE TO GET TO TO START THIS TRIP AND HOW LONG DOES THE BOAT RIDE TAKE INTO CAMP? We are based n Quadra Island, BC, and this is the departure pint fr the Whales and Wilderness Glamping trip. On the mrning the trip departs we will pick yu up at yur accmmdatin n Quadra Island at n charge. Please see ur Getting Here page fr mre details n hw t get t Quadra. The bat trip t camp takes abut hurs, depending n weather. Our water taxi is a cmfrtable ride with bathrm n bard. WHAT ABOUT KAYAK PREFERENCES? DO YOU PROVIDE DOUBLE AND SINGLE KAYAKS? We use a mix f single and duble kayaks n every trip. Duble kayaks ffer great advantages fr carrying carg, matching paddler abilities, r sharing the lad if smene is feeling a little tired ne day. If there are a lt f peple n ne trip that prefer singles then we take turns in the duble(s), s we ask that everyne have a bit f flexibility with regard t what they paddle. IF I WOULD LIKE TO TIP THE GUIDES, WHAT IS THE INDUSTRY STANDARD? If yu wuld like t express yur appreciatin t the guides thrugh a gratuity, such recgnitin wuld be enthusiastically received. The industry standard fr tipping is apprx. 10% per persn f the trip cst. All tips received will be cllected and disbursed amngst yur guides & basecrew by the trip leader. WHERE CAN I LEAVE LUGGAGE THAT I WON T NEED ON TRIP? If yu are staying n Quadra Island, many f the B&Bs ffer free luggage strage simply check with yur hst. Alternatively, guests staying n either Quadra Island r in Campbell River have the ptin f string excess luggage at ur ffice. Please ensure that yur luggage is clearly labelled with yur name, tur and trip date, and leave it with us n the first day f yur tur fr return t ur ffice.

10 ACCOMMODATIONS WHILE ON TOUR Fr this tur we prvide white, bright and spacius cttn canvas tents made here n Vancuver Island (3 3.6m). They are 8 (2.4m) high at the peak s have ample rm fr standing up and mving arund with ease. The screened windws and frnt dr prvide sweeping views f the frest and and/r cean. The tents are perched ff the grund n cedar platfrms, helping t prtect the delicate ecsystem belw. Inside yur tents are 2 twin beds which can be pushed tgether t make a king size if desired. These beds are handmade by ur wnderful crew with lcally milled red cedar and beach driftwd accents.
