PACK 1020 CAMPING Preface The enclsed material was cmpiled frm BSA publicatins, Scut resurces, camping resurces, and Cleman Owner s Manuals lcated in the public dmain. This Camping Resurce Guide is intended as a supplement t BSA s Guide t Safe Scuting, Age-Apprpriate Guidelines fr Scuting Activities and yur respective camping stve and lantern Owner s Manuals. Pack 1020 Camping Guidelines are at a minimum in line with BSA plicy. The Pack Cmmittee has chsen t tighten that plicy in several areas fr the purpses f the pack s safety. This Resurce Guide shuld in n way be cnstrued as an endrsement fr the Cleman Cmpany, r any f the Cleman camping prducts. Since the majrity f the families in Pack 1020 use Cleman stves and lanterns, the enclsed illustratins are based n Cleman prducts. Always read, understand, and fllw the manufacture s Owner Manual fr yur camping equipment. The infrmatin presented here is nt an fficial dcument f the By Scuts f America, but is slely my vlunteer wrk and respnsibility. N Liquid Fuels: The use f kersene, gasline, gulf-lite, liquid charcal starter, and Cleman fuel is prhibited. This prhibits the use f all equipment that uses liquid fuel, Cleman stves, chain saws, gas generatrs, etc. Prpane r butane fuels are permitted. N Sticks in the Fire: If a stick ges int the campfire, it stays there. Fire Safety: Yung children are almst transfixed by the presence f fire. Parents are required t supervise their children at all times, but especially arund fires. Cub Scuts are prhibited frm adding wd (r anything else) t the fire withut the express permissin and supervisin f their parent r leader. The fire shvels are fire safety devices and must remain near the wdpile. Each den shuld prvide a 2-3 galln pail filled with water t be kept near the fire fr emergencies. 7 8

All campfires shuld be attended by at least ne adult at all times. Campfires shuld be extinguished befre bedding dwn fr the night. Upn leaving the campsite, make sure the campfire is cmpletely extinguished. All Cub Scuts cking fd, especially marshmallws, at a campfire must have ne-n-ne, parent-child supervisin. A burning marshmallw is a sticky flaming mass that can cling t the skin and/r clthing and cause a serius burn. A ring f sticks, rpe, r split wd can be use t encircle the campfire at a radius f fur t five feet. Cub Scuts shuld be instructed t stay utside the fire ring unless accmpanied and supervised by a parent. Dens can mdify this plicy, as Cub Scuts grw lder and mre respnsible arund fires. N Fires in Tents: Never use matches, lighters, candles, charcal, prpane heaters, catalytic heaters, prpane r gas lanterns, r ther devices which prduce a flame inside f a tent. Tent Privacy and Respect: Cub Scuts must respect the private spaces f thers. N child is permitted t enter anther family s tent withut first getting permissin frm that family s parent r guardian. Bathing and Latrine Privacy: In accrdance with BSA Yuth Prtectin Plicies, bth by and adult privacy shuld be respected in a practical and reasnable way when bathing and using the latrines. In Cub Scuting, parents are respnsible fr supervising and mnitring the safety f their children in latrines and shwers. Leaders are instructed t respect the privacy f all Scuts and supervise nly t the extent f ensuring health and safety, as in the event f sudden illness, accidents, injuries, dangerus hrseplay, r rughhusing. Cub Sleep ver: Cub Scuts may nt sleep in tents with adults wh are nt their parent r legal adult guardian. (1) Sleep ver at camputs are nly permitted when Cub Scuts f similar age sleep tgether in a tent with n adults. Cub Scuts may d a sleep ver in a Cub Only tent. N Running within the Campsite: Injuries related t trips, slips and falls are the mst cmmn camping accident. Trip hazards abund within a campsite (lgs, rcks, sticks, fire ring, tent stakes, etc). Running nly accelerates a fall, increases the frce f impact, and increases the risk f serius injury. Please remind yur child nt t run within the campsite. Bring a sccer ball, Frisbee, r ftball and find an pen green space where running is safer. N sticks and rck thrwing: At ages 6-10, many bys can nt resist the urge t pick up a lng stick and swing, hit, pke, jab, r spar at r with each ther. It is hard fr many bys t resist using rcks r stnes as prjectiles. The risk f injury t thers far utweighs the fun f such cnduct and the bys will be warned nce and then asked t meet with the Cubmaster and his parents n the secnd incident. Ftwear: N pen ted shes, sandals, r bare feet in camp. Gym shes are apprpriate. Knives: Only Cub Scuts in the Bear prgram (3 rd ) grade and abve wh have successfully earned their Whittling Chip card may carry r use a pcketknife. Sheath knives are prhibited. (1) All activities invlving the use r carrying f a pcketknife are t be supervised by an adult and preferably within the campsite, r similar defined area. Pack leaders r parents wh bserve a by using his knife in a dangerus r 9 10

irrespnsible way are authrized t cnfiscate a knife prmptly and return it t the by s parents. Fishing: Yu Catchem Yu Eatem, r immediately release them. Where allwed, fishing is a great parent and child activity. Hwever, any fish caught must be immediately released, r if big enugh yu may prepare fr cnsumptin. D nt allw yur catch t be thrwn n the grund t die. If yu d nt want t abide by these simple rules, then please d nt fish. Trash Garbage: D nt bury r burn trash r garbage. All trash is t be placed in the dumpsters r carried hme fr dispsal. Leave N Trace: It is the respnsibility f each family t plice the campsite and fllw the Leave N Trace guidelines. 8 Camping Tips fr the Den: Keep the bys hydrated adults, t Keep the bys busy at all times - Dn t allw them t run wild - Always have an adult assigned t be being in charge - Have a plan B fr activities if the weather is bad N pcket knives n camputs befre they have earned the Whittling Chip 3 rd grade r lder. - And then nly fr supervised activities Suggested Activities fr Cub Scuts n Camputs (all supervised): Achievements and electives Hiking and nature walks Knt tying Carving and whittling (3 rd grade and lder bys wh have earned their Whittling Chip) Prepare and practice campfire skits and sngs Helping arund the Den campsite: - Setting up and taking dwn tents - Cking - Clean-up - Leave N Trace Participating in all Pack activities and prgrams Participating in park r campgrund rganized activities and prgrams 15 (2) Hw t clean dishes n a camping trip three pt methd: Steps 1. Smear a light film f bidegradable sap n the utside f yur pts befre cking. This will help keep the pts frm charring and make clean up easier. 2. Prepare enugh water t clean all dishes and pts in ne sitting. 3. Bil cleaning water while yu're cking if yu have an pen burner, r while yu eat, n the fire. It's a lt easier t clean ckware right after cking; therwise the fd cls and hardens n the inside f the pts. 4. Begin clean up by setting ut three pts r buckets: Wash pt: cntains ht water with a few drps f bidegradable sap. Ht-rinse pt clear ht water with a sanitizing tablet r a few drps f bleach t kill bacteria Cld-rinse pt: cld water Keep the dish water as clean as pssible. Scrape plates and pans befre washing. Wash cleanest dishes first, save dirtiest fr last. 5. Get a scrubbing pad and put sme water in the pt and start scrubbing the grime ff the sides. (If yu d this right after yu ck it shuld require minimal scrubbing unless yu cmpletely burned the pt while cking.) 6. Dip the pt in the cld rinse t kill the bacteria. 7. Use tngs t dip dishes in the ht-rinse pt. This is imprtant because it gets all f the bleach ff f the dishes s that they are safe t eat frm later. 8. Place the dishes n a clean grund clth r n a piece f tin fil t drip dry. 9. Let them air dry if yu have time; therwise a paper twel will wrk. Yu can hang the dishes in mesh bags fr effective, n-tuch drying. 16

10. Dispse f the dirty dishwater by first running a strainer thrugh it thrughly t remve all f the fd particles. 11. Carry the water 200 feet away frm yur campsite and any water surces, and fling it ut in a widespread area. 12. Empty the strainer int a trash bag t carry ut with yu. Simple Wash Statin: T make a hand wash statin, yu will need a bar f sap in a stcking, an empty galln milk jug (with lid), 2 lengths f rpe and a sharp stick. Tie the stcking with the bar f sap inside it t the jug handle. Fill jug with water, put lid n, and hang with ne length f the rpe at the prper height. Tie the sharp stick t jug handle with the ther piece f the rpe. Pke the stick int the jug near the bttm, leaving the stick in as a plug. T wash hands, remve the stick, wet hands, rub n bar sap in stcking t lather, and rinse with stream f water frm the jug. Replace stick t plug hle when rinsed. The wash statin shuld be gd fr 20 r s washes befre refill is needed. Knwledgeable adult supervisin must be prvided when Scuts are invlved in the strage f chemical fuels, the handling f chemical fuels in the filling f stves r lanterns, r the lighting f chemical fuels. The use f liquid fuels fr starting any type f fire is prhibited. Guidelines fr Safely Using Chemical Stves and Lanterns Knwledgeable adult supervisin must be prvided when Scuts are invlved in the strage f chemical fuels, the handling f chemical fuels in the filling f stves r lanterns, r the lighting f chemical fuels. The use f liquid fuels fr starting any type f fire is prhibited. Use cmpressed- r liquid-gas stves r lanterns nly with knwledgeable adult supervisin and in Scut facilities nly where and when permitted. Operate and maintain accrding t manufacturer s instructins included with the stve r lantern. The use f kersene, gasline, gulf-lite, liquid charcal starter, and Cleman fuel Liquid Fuels is prhibited. This prhibits the use f all equipment that uses liquid fuel, Cleman stves, chain saws, gas generatrs, etc. Therefre, all references t the use f Liquid Fuels and camping equipment that utilize Liquid Fuels have been excluded frm this resurce guide. Prpane r butane fuels are permitted. Keep all chemical fuel cntainers away frm ht stves and campfires, and stre belw 100 degrees (F). Let ht stves and lanterns cl befre changing cylinders f cmpressed gases. Never fuel a stve, heater, r lantern inside a cabin; always d this utdrs. D nt perate a stve, lantern, r charcal grill in an unventilated structure. Prvide at least tw ventilatin penings, ne high and ne lw, t prvide xygen and exhaust fr lethal gases. Never fuel ignite, r perate a stve, heater, r lantern in a tent

Place the stve n a level, secure surface befre perating. On snw, place insulated supprt under the stve t prevent melting and tipping. Peridically check fittings n cmpressed-gas stves fr leakage, using sap slutin befre lighting. T avid pssible fires, lcate gas tanks, stves, etc., belw any tents since heavy leakage f gas will flw dwnhill the same as water. When lighting a stve, keep fuel cntainers and extra canisters well away. D nt hver ver the stve when lighting it. Keep yur head and bdy t ne side. Open the stve valve quickly fr tw full turns and light carefully, with head, fingers, and hands t the side f the burner. Then adjust dwn. D nt leave a lighted stve r lantern unattended. D nt verlad the stvetp with heavy pts r large frying pans. If pts ver 2 quarts are necessary, set up a separate grill with legs t hld the pt, and place the stve under the grill. Bring empty fuel cntainers hme fr dispsal. D nt place in r near fires. Empty fuel cntainers will explde if heated and shuld never be put in fireplaces r with burnable trash. Extinguishers Only flashlights and electric lanterns are permitted in tents. N flames in tents is a rule that must be enfrced. Never use stves, heaters, lanterns, lighted candles, matches, and ther flame surces in r near tents. D nt pitch tents near an pen fire. D nt use flammable chemicals near tents charcal lighter r spray cans f paint, bug killer, r repellent. Be careful when using electricity and lighting in tents. Always extinguish cking campfires prmptly. Obey all fire laws, rdinances, and regulatins. If fire breaks ut, it must be quickly and prperly suppressed. T d this, yu must knw the three classes f fires and hw t cmbat them: Class A Fires that invlve nrmally cmbustible materials such as paper, wd, fabrics, rubber, and many plastics. These fires can be quenched with water r insulated with tri-class (ABC) chemical r fam extinguishers. Flammability Warning N tent material is cmpletely fireprf. It can burn when expsed t cntinued, intense heat r fire. The mst imprtant safeguard is t keep flames away frm canvas materials. Fr this reasn, the fllwing safety precautins are emphasized: Class B Fires that invlve gasline, il, grease, tars, paints, lacquers, r flammable gases. The xygen that supprts this type f fire must be cut ff by tri-class (ABC), regular dry chemical, fam, r carbn dixide (CO2) extinguishers. Water is dangerus, as it spreads the fire

Class C Electrical fires invlving heated wire and arcing. These fires must be suppressed with tri-class (ABC) dry chemicals r CO2 never water, which is a cnductr. Fires in any ne class may invlve materials f ther classes, s mre than ne type f extinguisher shuld be available. Because f the danger f lethal fumes, carbn tetrachlride (CCl4) extinguishers must nt be used. Dispse f these extinguishers as recmmended by fire fficials. Extinguishers shuld nrmally be munted near a drway and apprximately at shulder level. In a camp setting, the unit leader is respnsible fr training Scuts in fire preventin, fire detectin and reprting, and fire fighting. All yuth members and adult leaders shuld have unit fireguard plan training. drp in the cylinder and utput will diminish as a result. Cylinders weigh tw r three punds, s prpane isn t the lightest weight ptin. Nr is it the least expensive. Prpane stves are available fr use with small fuel bttles, r even large RV type bttles. If yu start camping a lt, yu will find that the small bttles may be very, very, cnvenient, but very, very expensive. Hwever, if yu buy a stve that has a hse t screw int a larger fuel tank, yu can get a better price n the fuel. Yu will als save a lt f bttle changes that can happen right in the middle f cking yur meals. The prpane tanks cme in 5, 10 and 20 pund sizes. A typical pati gas barbeque grill has a 20 pund tank. The BBQ tank culd be hked up t a stve fr the camping trip. Anther ptin with the prpane tank apprach is t get the ptinal attachment that will supply prpane t a lantern frm the same tank. Nw yu will have a light in yur "kitchen." Main advantages: cnvenience and availability Apprved fuel types fr Cub Scut camping Prpane Mre campers use this fuel than any ther, prbably because f cnvenience and ease f use. N puring. N priming. Just attach the fuel cylinder t the appliance and yu re in business. Cleman equipment is pressure-regulated at 15 psi (punds per square inch) t ensure steady utput thrughut the life f the cylinder. Prpane ffers great verall reliability, but be aware that it perates less effectively at subfreezing temperatures than liquid fuels. Cld will cause a pressure 21 Butane/Prpane Fuel Butane/Prpane mix canisters are lightweight, resealable, and easily cnnect t stves and lanterns. Mst canister appliances are lightweight and simple t use, s if yu are a backpacker wh cunts unces and appreciates cnvenience this fuel is fr yu. Dwnsides are that canisters can't be recycled, and in subfreezing temperatures, the fuel des nt perfrm well, r at all. Cld temperatures affect the pressure in the canister, s perfrmance is best in mild t mderate cnditins. Yu'll find this fuel in specialty and sprting gds stres under several brand names. Main advantages: cnvenience and light weight 22

Camping Stve If size and weight are nt majr issues, try t get a stve with at least tw burners. Mst meals need a minimum f tw burners (e.g. ne fr ptates and ne fr meat; r ne fr pasta and ne fr a sauce). A single burner stve des mean that yu can have smething ht, but it is relatively limited in terms f meal chices cmpared t 2-burner r 3-burner stves. If yu are cking with large (heavy) pts, yu will need a stve with brad hb supprts and wide legs in rder t prevent the pt tipping ver and t supprt the weight f the water in the pts. If yu are cking nly with a small pt (e.g. t bil water fr cffee), then a smaller and mre lightweight stve is adequate. The prduct infrmatin fr stves typically specifies the weight f the stve. Hwever, this weight is usually that f the stve itself and des nt include the weight f the fuel r the fuel cntainer. When calculating the amunt f weight yu will be carrying, all three items need t be included (plus any accessries, such as windscreens, pts and ther ckware). If yu are purchasing a stve which uses gas, cnsider buying ne with a push-buttn ignitin as this is mre cnvenient than matches. Hwever, in case the ignitin fails (which it can d if it gets wet r breaks), yu shuld carry sme matches as well. It is preferable t have a stve with an adjustable flame, s yu can cntrl the amunt f heat (and the rate f fuel cnsumptin). 23 If yur stve desn't cme with a carrying case, cnsider purchasing a padded case which will prtect the stve knbs and hses. Check if yur stve wrks with standard fuel canisters, r if yu have t use a special fuel canister (e.g. ne frm the same manufacturer as the stve). It is preferable that it uses a standard fuel canister and canister cnnectin, s that replacements are readily available. A camping stve generally will nt wrk well in windy cnditins, as the wind blws the flame and the heat f the flame. This means that yu will need much mre fuel and a much lnger time t ck than in nn-windy cnditins. T prevent this, the stve must be prtected frm the wind by: Build a shelter r take advantage f existing shelter. Building a lean-t, frming a small windbreak with sme stnes, r cking behind sme bject (e.g. a bulder) may prvide sufficient shelter. Buy a stve which cmes equipped with a windbreak. Sme stves are equipped with a windscreen. If yu frequently camp in windy areas, they are wrth cnsidering. Hwever, while a useful feature, it adds t the weight and size, s ne has t balance carrying the extra lad against the cnvenience f a built-in windscreen. Aside frm size and weight, it is useful t lk at the efficiently rating f stves. Hw ht can they burn? Hw lng d they take t bil a liter f water? Hw lng can they run (at minimum and at full) n a single fuel tank? When purchasing a stve, ask which items are mst likely t break r wear ut. Als check what tls yu will need t change them (will a standard Swiss army knife d, r d yu 24

need special tls?). It is useful t carry a basic set f spares alng with any tls required t exchange parts, in case yur stve fails while yu are camping. The imprtant cnsideratins in chsing a camping stve are: Try using yur stve at least a week befre yu actually g camping. It is much better t learn hw t use it and t crrect any pssible prblems (e.g. yur gas canister has the wrng type f cnnectin fr yur stve) befre yu depart n yur camping trip. Fr safety reasns, airlines generally d nt allw transprt f fuel r f stves, which have been previusly used, n matter hw carefully they have been cleaned. Cnsequently, d nt plan n traveling by air with yur stve unless it is brand new and yu are buying yur fuel after yu land (even then, yu still have the issue f the airline nt allwing yu t transprt yur stve fr the return trip, as it is nw used and cnsequently cntains ptentially dangerus fuel fumes). In purchasing equipment fr the utdrs, I always use the same thught prcess. Hw ften am I ging t upgrade my equipment based n the new radical imprvements that the manufacturer will cme ut with? Hw lng befre my existing equipment will becme bslete and I will have t replace it? Hw lng will it be befre I have a disadvantage with my existing equipment? Where yu ging t be camping and hw many peple d yu have t ck fr? Size and weight Camping stves can weigh frm a cuple f unces t many punds. The stve that yu wuld carry fr backpacking is cmpletely different frm the stve used while car camping. Keep in mind that the weight f the lightweight burners d nt include the fuel (either a fuel cartridge r tank). Autmatic push buttn ignitin Many lightweight burners cme with a push buttn ignitin. Always carry matches in case the ignitin becmes defective and des nt light the burner. The larger stves have tw burners fr cking tw items at the same time and thse stves are usually used fr car camping r bating, etc. Carrying case Mst lightweight burners cme with their wn bag t prtect the burner frm becming damaged. If the burner des nt have a bag, purchase a padded bag fr prtectin Fuel is available Whatever fuel needs t be used with the stve, be sure that the places yu intend t camp have access t fuel in case yu need extra fuel

Duel features Sme fuel can accmmdate a lantern head which allws bth cking and the use f a night light. This is an extra ptin even thugh the lantern head must be purchased, t. Adjustable flame A knb r little bar will allw the stve t be adjusted t different flames. This makes cking much easier. Wind screens Anther ptin available fr the camping stve is a wind screen which will nt nly blck the wind, but als will help t heat the water and fd faster since the wind screen traps the heat. Prpane, Butane r Isbutene canister fuel These fuels are the easiest t use; turn the gas n and push the ignitin and the stve is lit. The disadvantage f these fuels is that the canisters have t be dispsed f prperly. When the can is partially empty, it takes lnger t bil the same amunt f water and the stve des nt functin prperly in belw freezing weather. These fuels tend t simmer better and they are clean burning. When the burner is remved frm the canister, the canister reseals itself. Camp Stve Tips Check yur prpane-fueled camping appliances peridically t ensure they are functining prperly. Carefully inspect them at hme befre taking them n a trip. Never use a flame t check fr leaks; instead, apply sapy water n each f the cnnectins, turn n the gas and watch fr telltale bubbles. Als, be alert fr the 'rtten egg' dr f prpane, which may als indicate a leak. If yu smell the familiar 'rtten egg' dr f prpane, fllw these steps: (1) d nt light matches r use any electrical equipment; (2) turn ff the gas valve, (3) discnnect frm prpane canister and (4) place the stve and prpane canister in a well ventilated area and allw ample time fr the gas t dissipate. Use nly apprved appliances and lk fr a label frm a testing labratry, such as Underwriters Labratries, befre buying. Always thrughly read and fllw the manufacturer's directins. Never use a wrn r damaged appliance. D nt stre prpane cylinders inside ht vehicles r where temperatures might rise abve 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Cylinders shuld be stred, mved and used in an upright psitin unless therwise indicated n the cylinder. Bth cylinders and appliances shuld be kept ut f the reach f children at all times

Never use yur prpane stve in an enclsed area. It shuld be lcated in an pen, well-ventilated area away frm shrubs r dry wd. If such an area is nt available, clear ne by hand. Keep the stve away frm yur tent, sleeping bags and camper. Never leave the heater, stve r lamp burning vernight r unattended. Secure the stve n a level, nnflammable surface. Use a stve base when cking n snw r uneven grund. Ceramic tile r ld license plates make great bases. Visible markers shuld be put up t alert fellw campers t stves that are small and lw t the grund. Befre cnnecting the stve t the prpane cylinder, make sure that the stve valve is set at OFF Inspect and check cnnectins carefully fr dirt r damage prir t lighting. T clean, use a damp, warm, sapy paper twel r spnge. Use the 'bubble test' mentined earlier t check the cnnectins. Never immerse the stve in water. If ignitin des nt ccur immediately, turn ff the gas, wait fr it t clear and try again. When lighting, make sure yu keep yur hands and fingers t the side f the burner and clthing away frm the flame. Never leave a ht stve unattended, and always turn it ff befre mving it. Discnnect the fuel cylinder when repacking, string r transprting the camp stve. Cver and stre the stve in a clean, dry place. 2 Burner Electrnic Ignitin Prpane Stve Hw t setup the stve 1. Press n latch t pen lid and psitin wind baffles t the left and right side f the stve. Insert the wire clip f the wind baffles int the slts lcated n the base f the stve. 2. Clse bth burner valves firmly (Fig 7). 3. Remve regulatr (Fig 8) frm the strage psitin under the grate (Fig 6) and inspect gasket (Fig 13) n the stve cnnectin befre use. 4. Remve the plastic cap frm the tp f the prpane cylinder and screw prpane cylinder int regulatr (Fig 8), hand tighten. 5. Screw regular int stve (Fig 9) int stve and hand tighten

Hw t match light the stve 1. Hld lighted match near burner (Fig 12) and pen burner valve (Fig 7). 2. Adjust flame with burner valve. 3. Flame shuld be blue with a hint f yellw n tips 4. T turn ff, clse burner valve firmly. Hw t start an electrnic ignitin stve 1. Open burner valve and rtate igniter knb (Fig 4) several times until burner lights. Nte: If igniter fails t light stve, use match t light burner (see abve prcedure). If the stve is wet, the igniter may nt spark. Hw t stre yur stve 1. Clse burner valves firmly. 2. Remve prpane cylinder frm regulatr and replace plastic cap n cylinder. 3. Unscrew regulatr frm stve and place in strage psitin. 4. Remve wire clips f the wind baffles frm base if the stve. Fld wind baffles against the stve lid. 5. Clse lid Care and Cleaning f Camp Stves A cleaner stve wrks better and lks better. The benefits f regular cleanings include better fuel efficiency, flame cntrl and n rust r crrsin. Althugh there isn't a set schedule fr cleaning yur stve, yu shuld clean it whenever it is dirty r after a bil-ver that causes buildup in the burners. Annual cleanings are recmmended befre string yur stve at the end f camping seasn. Under mst cnditins, stves can be wiped ut with warm water and dishwashing sap and then dried befre string. Fr a deeper cleaning, here are a few suggestins: If there has been a bil-ver, remve the screw frm the center f each burner and lift ff the burner rings and bwl t check the manifld fr fluid r fd debris. If there is a build-up, clean it with dishwashing sap and warm water befre rinsing with clean water. If the stve has a massive amunt f grease and dirt build-up inside the case, n the grill r burners, yu can take the stve t a car wash and use a high-pressure hse n it. Dn't use any type f tire, ven r engine cleaner because it can damage the paint n the inside f the case and the metal f the grate and manifld. If a stve has been cleaned with any type f water hse, turn the stve upside dwn t ensure all the water is remved frm inside the manifld. Any water left inside the manifld can cause it t rust and disturb the flw f fuel t the burner, preventing the stve frm burning prperly

After cleaning, prper strage f yur camp stve is als imprtant. Put it int a plastic bag, sealing with a twist tie t prevent spiders r ther insects frm crawling in the unit, which can blck the fuel and airflw. Cmmn questins abut camp stves Why wn t my stve shut ff? It is nrmal fr a liquid fuel stve t cntinue burning fr up t tw minutes after the valve is shut ff. The fuel flw is shut ff in the valve directly behind the knb but there is still fuel in the stve s generatr. The generatr will cntinue t push the remaining fuel t the burner until it is all burned. Prpane stves shuld shut ff within a few secnds f the valve being clsed. If the stve cntinues t run, the valve will need t be replaced. What effects d temperature and altitude have n the perfrmance f my stve? The perfrmance f prpane stves will nt be affected by temperatures abve 0 F. As the temperature drps belw 0 F, there will be a gradual reductin f maximum heat utput dwn t 20 F where the stve may fail t functin. Altitudes abve 10,000 ft will have an effect n prpane stves. Because f lwer air pressure and decreased xygen at these altitudes, yu will experience mre yellw flame and less heat utput. The stves will nt perate as efficiently. 33 Why des the prpane bttle develp cndensatin r frst n the utside while in use? As prpane is drawn frm the cylinder during the peratin f a camp stve, the liquid in the cylinder turns t vapr as it passes int the stve valve. This draws heat frm the cylinder and the surrunding air. The misture in the surrunding air cndenses n the cling cylinder and, if the air cntains enugh misture and the fuel is withdrawn fast enugh, the misture will freeze n the cylinder and frm frst. Lanterns, Flashlights, and Candles Battery Battery lanterns give f plenty f light but hwever yu will need t have spare batteries r if it is a rechargeable style yu will need sme way t recharge it. The rechargeable lanterns d nt last as lng as a battery type f lantern and the lighting tends t be a bit duller. The rechargeable lanterns can be recharged with yu car by plugging int the cigarette lighter n sme mdels. The nly kind f lantern t use inside a tent is a battery style. But they d nt wrk well in clder climates as the batteries tend t run dwn faster due t the cld. Be sure the lantern yu buy is weather prf. If yu are using a prpane lantern in the rain yu have t be careful because the glass glbe can break if a lt f water gets n it. A single mantle in a lantern gives ff abut 300 watts f light. Be aware that the glass glbe f all prpane lanterns get extremely ht and can give yu a serius burn. 34

Flashlights Be sure the flashlight yu purchase is waterprf, crrsin resistant and has a scratch resistant lens. Lk fr ne that has an adjustable beam and can be free standing which frees up yur hands t d ther things. Have a flashlight fr each camper in yur grup. The plastic types are great fr the kids and they nly cst a dllar r s. Never let the kids wander arund at night as unless they have been taught nt t shine their flashlight beams int ther camping sites, which can upset the ther campers. Be sure that the flashlights are shck prf. Many a flashlight has been brke because the kids accidentally drpped it n the grund. If yu are walking at night never shine yur flash light at any mving vehicles. Yur light may blind the driver and which culd cause an accident. Candles If yu are ging t use candles, yu will have t be very careful that yu d nt start a fire. Remember that the ht wax f the candle can burn yu if yu get it n yur skin. It is Pack 1020 s plicy that candles shuld nly be used fr Den r Pack ceremnies and shuld never be used as a light surce in lieu f a flashlight r lantern. Prpane Lantern Tips Keep dirt and freign particles ut f the lantern valve, and blw the valve clean befre cnnecting the cylinder t the lantern. Check the cylinder, valve cnnectins and mantle (the part shielding the flame) befre each use. Never perate withut a mantle r with a damaged mantle that has visible hles r cracks. Avid mantle verburn, which can shrten the life f the mantle and damage yur lantern. Leave plenty f clearance between yur prpane lamp r lantern and any cmbustible materials. Fllw the manufacturer's recmmendatins fr space clearance. Select a level surface n which t place the lamp r lantern. A lantern is nt a space heater. Use it nly as a light surce. Always detach the prpane cylinder befre transprting a lantern. Lanterns Prpane Gas lanterns give ff bright light but are nisy and will be the mst expensive f all lanterns t perate. Yu will have t pack extra prpane bttles. Lanterns use mantels s be sure t carry extras

2 Mantle Prpane Lantern Hw t attach the prpane canister 1. Take lantern utdrs away frm ignitin surce. 2. Remve prtective cap frm tp f prpane cylinder. Save the cap fr use in string. 3. Screw prpane cylinder int bttm f lantern. Take care nt t crss-thread. Hand tighten nly. 4. Set lantern int base. Hw t match light the lantern 1. Push lighted match thrugh light hle (Fig 13), hld near mantle and pen fuel valve fully (Fig 14). 2. Brightness may be adjusted with fuel valve. 3. T turn lantern ff, turn fuel valve ff. Hw t use an electrnic ignitin lantern Hw t install the Mantle 1. Place lantern frame in base (Fig 1). 2. If using tie style mantles (Fig 7), tie mantles arund the grves in burner (Fig 6). 3. Distribute flds n mantle evenly. Cut ff surplus string 1/4 frm knt. 4. Light bttm f mantle with match (prpane must be turned ff). Burn until nthing but white ash remains. Once the mantle has been burned, it is very fragile. Be careful nt t tuch it with finger r match. It is always a gd idea t have an extra package f mantles with yur lantern in case n f the gets damaged. 5. Cmplete lantern assembly. 1. Open burner valve and repeatedly push igniter buttn and ignite the mantles Nte: If lantern des nt light, repeat the abve steps. If the lantern des nt light after several attempts, check fr a spark while clicking the igniter. If n spark is present, check the electrde gap. The gap shuld be abut 0.2. Carefully bend electrde t set gap. If the lantern is wet due t rain, r high humidity, the electrde may nt spark. Use the abve mentined match light prcedure t light

Hw t stre the lantern 1. Make sure lantern is cl. 2. Mve lantern away frm flame and ther ignitin surces. 3. Remve prpane cylinder frm lantern. 4. Replace prtective cap n prpane cylinder. 5. Lantern must be placed in base fr secure strage. Care and Cleaning f Prpane Lantern A cleaner prpane lantern wrks better and lks better. The benefits f regular cleanings include better fuel efficiency, flame cntrl and n rust r crrsin Althugh there isn't a set schedule fr cleaning yur lantern, yu shuld clean it whenever it is dirty befre string yur lantern at the end f camping seasn. Under mst cnditins, lanterns can be wiped ut with warm water and dishwashing sap and then dried befre string. After cleaning, prper strage f yur lantern is als imprtant. Put it int a plastic bag, sealing with a twist tie t prevent spiders r ther insects frm crawling in the unit, which can blck the fuel and airflw. Cmmn questins abut Prpane Lantern What makes the lantern mantle glw? When the mantles are burned fr the first time, the clth fibers burn away and leave a natural surce chemical ash that, when heated, prduces a bright incandescent light Yu shuld always light the mantles with a match and let them burn t ash befre lighting the lantern as attempting t light the lantern and burn ff the mantles at the same time can cause a mantle t tear r break. It is recmmended that if yu have an electrnic ignitin lantern, yu light it the first time with a match. After being burned ff, mantles are flimsy and hang like an empty sck. Using the electrnic ignitin n the first lighting can cause the mantle t break. Lighting the lantern the first time with a match will allw the mantles t expand and shape themselves, which makes them strnger. What is the best way t stre my lantern? A carrying case r the riginal cartn is the best methd f strage. If the riginal cartn will n lnger clse tightly r if yu d nt have a case r the riginal cartn, placing the lantern in a plastic bag and sealing it will prevent spiders and insects frm blcking the burner tube. It is recmmended that yu empty the fuel back int the fuel can if yur lantern is ging t be stred fr mre than a cuple f weeks. This will reduce the lacquer buildup n the fuel and air tube

What effect des temperature and elevatin have n the perfrmance f my lantern? The perfrmance f prpane lanterns will nt be affected by temperatures abve 0 F. As the temperature drps belw 0 F, there will be a gradual reductin f light utput dwn t 20 F where the lantern may fail t functin. Altitudes abve 10,000 ft will have an effect prpane lanterns. Leave N Trace Frntcuntry Guidelines As mre peple use parks and recreatin facilities, LEAVE NO TRACE guidelines becme even mre imprtant fr utdr visitrs. Leave N Trace is a plan that helps peple t be mre cncerned abut their envirnment and t help them prtect it fr future generatins. Leave N Trace applies in a backyard r lcal park (frntcuntry) as much as it des in the wilderness (backcuntry). We shuld practice Leave N Trace in ur attitude and actins--wherever we g. Understanding nature strengthens ur respect tward the envirnment. One persn with thughtless behavir r ne shrtcut n a trail can spil the utdr experience fr thers. Help prtect the envirnment by remembering that while yu are there, yu are a visitr. When yu visit the utdrs, take special care f the area. Leave everything just as yu find it. Hiking and camping withut a trace are signs f a cnsiderate utdrsman wh cares fr the envirnment. Travel lightly n the land

Plan Ahead Watch fr hazards and fllw all the rules f the park r utdr facility. Remember prper clthing, sunscreen, hats, first aid kits, and plenty f drinking water. Use the buddy system. Make sure yu carry yur family's name, phne number, and address. Leave what yu find When visiting any utdr area, try t leave it the same as yu find it. The less impact we each make, the lnger we will enjy what we have. Even picking flwers denies thers the pprtunity t see them and reduces seeds, which means fewer plants next year. Use established restrms. Graffiti and vandalism have n place anywhere, and they spil the experience fr thers. Leave yur mark by ding an apprved cnservatin prject. Stick t Trails Stay n marked trails whenever pssible. Shrt-cutting trails causes the sil t wear away r t be packed, which eventually kills trees and ther vegetatin. Trampled wildflwers and vegetatin take years t recver. Stick t trails! Respect ther visitrs Expect t meet ther visitrs. Be curteus and make rm fr thers. Cntrl yur speed when biking r running. Pass with care and let thers knw befre yu pass. Avid disturbing thers by making nise r playing lud music. Respect "N Trespassing" signs. If prperty bundaries are unclear, d nt enter the area. Manager yur pet Managing yur pet will keep peple, dgs, livestck, and wildlife frm feeling threatened. Make sure yur pet is n a leash r cntrlled at all times. D nt let yur pet apprach r chase wildlife. When animals are chased r disturbed, they change eating patterns and use mre energy that may result in pr health r death. Take care f yur pet's waste. Take a small shvel r scp and a pick-up bag t pick up yur pet's waste wherever it's left. Place the waste bags in a trash can fr dispsal. Trash yur trash Make sure all trash is put in a bag r trash receptacle. Trash is unsightly and ruins everyne's utdr experience. Yur trash can kill wildlife. Even materials, such as range peels, apple cres and fd scraps, take years t break dwn and may attract unwanted pests that culd becme a prblem
