The show retains many aspects of a traditional agricultural show with a strong emphasis on livestock competitions and family entertainment. Attracting crowds of 18-30,000, the show caters to a wide audience and includes a comprehensive trade fair making it the state s largest regional show. Sheep and wool are enthusiastically promoted; covering wool growing, stud sheep, wool harvesting and wool fashion. These professional sports persons have been all over the world representing Australia in this industry. On the day of our event we got to enjoy their performances. They helped the novice entrants to set up their wool room with tips and brief instructions. This gave the novice entrants the confidence to perform at this level. Thank you to everyone involved. 11 CLEAN SHEAR COMPETITION Section I Wagin Woolorama 2014 Report We had good support from the shearing industry and wide interest from the public for the Make Smoking History Wagin Woolorama 2014 shearing competition on Saturday, 7 th March. There were 81 entrants in five classes of competition (10 Open, 18 Seniors, 13 Intermediate, 12 Under 21s, and 28 Novice), making for a full day of activity. Special thanks to gold sponsors Australian Wool Innovation (who supplied singlets and entry fees) and Heiniger (who supplied the shearing heads). Bronze sponsors included Wellard Rural Exports, McEllister Shearing, Don Speirs and John Wilkie. Wagin Transport carting the sheep all day and are to be commended on their generosity. Thanks to the Abbott family for supplying the sheep. Singlets were made by TopGun and funded by AWI. For the Woolhandling the singlets were aqua 100% cotton with white trim, and for the shearers black wool fabric with red trim. They looked very nice. The shearers prize these but due to internal poverty of proof reading both the shearing and woolhandling singlets had woolhandling printed on them - an error we won t repeat next year. Thanks to Lee Bessel-Brown for ensuring a smooth hand-over to me in my first year as head steward. Thanks to the many helpers (6) behind the scene who made the event run so smoothly. I d like to single Adrian Lucas out for particular mention he was honoured by the Society for having given more than thirty years volunteer effort to the shearing shed. Improved facilities for the gallery (astro turf) met with favourable comment. Next year I d like to make improvements to the back of the shed (some of the gates don t work and doors are falling apart), plus install permanent yards at the side of the shed.
