6 WA vs NZ CHALLENGE The Perth Royal Show has hosted the WA vs NZ Challenge shearing event for in excess of 25 years at the Claremont Showgrounds. This is just one of many competitions held throughout the first day of the Show and the general public flocked to the Jim Horwood Pavilion where the challenge took place and the allocated seating was snapped up with many more people standing. The top five Western Australian competitors competed against each other in September at the Corrigin Shears with the top two, Damien Boyle and Mark Buscumb being selected to represent WA. The Challenge began with a solo rendition of both the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems, which generated an exciting build up. The event is an international crowd drawer with families and friends attending and barracking from both sides of the Tasman. The atmosphere among spectators was good naturedly competitive and patriotic the crowd loved the rivalry! Each of the four competitors had six crossbred and six Merino sheep to shear in the shear off. The wool handlers had their job cut out collecting the fleeces as sheep after sheep went under the shears. The NZ team tend to be very good on the crossbred sheep whilst the Merinos tend to slow them down. New Zealand was represented by Tony Coster and Chris Vickers. WA had the winning team this year. Generally, WA win more often than not on their home ground whilst the return challenge which has been held in Alexander in the South Island for the last 8-10 years, sees the WA team sometimes come off second best saw the New Zealanders win the Challenge on their home soil, although Damien did win the NZ Merino Challenge again, making 2013 the fourth year in a row. The competition was tight Tony sheared his 12 sheep in 18 min 30 seconds with penalties and Chris took 17 mins 43 seconds for a score of giving them a combined score of Damien averaged a board score of 3.9 in the 21 mins he took to shear his 12 sheep, giving him a total of , while Mark scored points in 17 min 34 sec, for a total of THE HEINIGER 100 The Heiniger 100 is new to the Perth Royal Show for 2013 and competitors were invited to compete. Six shearers sheared 106 (including 6 DQ s) Merino lambs in a team speed shear event. Shearers from all Australian states compete against each other and the fastest state is the winner. The winning state will hold a perpetual trophy, donated by Heiniger, for twelve months.
