4 New home for Sunny Valley THE Sunny Valley Merino stud story has begun a new chapter, with its relocation to Quindanning, west of Williams. New stud principals Wes and Briana Lavender were the biggest purchasers at Neil and Sandy Jackson s Sunny Valley dispersal sale in December 2010 with the purchase of more than 400 elite stud ewes, 200 ram and ewe weaners and four top stud sires at auction. Post-sale negotiations between the Lavenders and the Jacksons paved the way for the Lavenders to take over the stud name, allowing more than 50 years of Merino stud breeding to continue under the Sunny Valley banner. Wes said the stud complemented the commercial Merino operation the family already runs on the property. The commercial Merino operation, which consists of 4000 Merino ewes, is run by Wes, his father George and brother Dylan. Three thousand of the commercial ewes are joined to Merinos and the other 1000 are joined to terminal sires. It is the knowledge learned from running a successful commercial operation that Wes believes will help him to rebuild the stud flock to the depth once seen at Sunny Valley. With breeders now trying to rebuild the dwindling national flock in the wake of some very tight seasons, emphasis on the productivity of the commercial ewe has never been greater, Wes said. In a Merino operation, wool quality and cut per hectare are the two biggest drivers of profit, and in higher rainfall areas the Sunny Valley Merino is already known to deliver both every time. The Lavender s passion for Merinos goes back generations. They were one of the first families to settle in the Quindanning area and Wes s grandfather Ray still gets a twinkle in his eye when he sees quality wool on a good sheep and there is no better example of quality than at Sunny Valley. An example of this was on show at this year s Wagin Woolorama where former Sunny Valley stud principal Don Jackson exhibited the champion fine wool fleece, which was off one of the sires purchased by the Lavenders at the dispersal, WP WP is a son of Wallaloo Park 13, a sire that has bred very well around Australia and boasts both low micron and great cutting ability. Wes said the sires they decided to use in their first mating were extremely well built and stood very well. They are also all low micron, longstapled, free-growing types with a rich, white and productive wool that can only be found at Sunny Valley, he said. With record wool prices being paid around Australia, the return for growing quality wools has never paid greater dividends and Wes said those that haven t bred the wool off their sheep are reaping the rewards. Wes said the move into the stud breeding industry has been made so much easier with such a solid foundation of quality and the watchful eye of Kevin Broad, Elders stud stock and welcome advice from Neil Jackson. We are excited about what the future holds for both Sunny Valley and the Merino industry as a whole, he said. A selection of this year s sale team and stud reserves will be on display at the Williams Sportsground during the Farm Weekly Southern Districts Merino Field Days and in an industry first, 80 rams will be auctioned in the beautiful surrounds of the historic Quindanning Inne on Thursday, October WA MERINO 2011

8 Wickepin / Narrogin / Williams / Wagin / Kojonup dayone Tuesday, August 16 Positive results at San-Mateo AFTER such a tough year that saw many producers getting out of sheep, San-Mateo stud principals Nigel and Damien Morrison are still very committed to the industry and the stud s future. This year will be an exciting one for the stud with the first drop of rams lambs from a supreme Manunda Poll Merino sire they purchased in 2009, along with three other top sires purchased in the same year, available for selection by clients. The brothers paid top dollar for the impressive Manunda ram, which was a son of Manunda White 161 and measured 20.1 microns and 100 per cent comfort factor. Nigel said the ram boasts a huge frame and body length along with top quality white, soft wool and these traits have really come through in his progeny. Both Nigel and Damien are enthusiastic about the rams they purchased from Manunda in 2008 and 2009 and they purchased two more in 2010, including the top-priced ram at last year s sale. We wanted to get the Poll stud up and running quickly and with a selection of our top stud ewes and Manunda s genetics, we are ecstatic with the results, Nigel said. The progeny are certainly showing the bodies and wool traits of their sires. Manunda s rams are top-quality and this is why we have stuck with them over the years. The brothers also have a line-up of rams available for sale this year which are sired by a Strath-Haddon ram they purchased in The ram was suggested to them by stud classer Nathan King who said it would be a valuable addition to the Merino stud and he wasn t wrong. Nathan, along with Landmark stud stock representative Mitchell Crosby, has continued to class the Morrisons rams despite having moved to NSW. Clearly remaining fully committed to both the Merino and Poll Merino studs and investing in new genetics annually has paid off for the brothers, with clients returning year in, year out to chase the new bloodlines and quality wools the stud is renowned for. Nigel and Damien focus on wool quality, as well as increasing wool cut and fertility along with increased lambing percentages in both their Merino and Poll Merino flocks. Our stock have high quality white wool and tend to cut a lot of wool for the fine micron that they produce, Nigel said. We want growers to look at the rams structure and size and to see how much top quality wool is on them. The $8000 top priced stud sire purchased by San-Mateo at the 2009 annual on-property Manunda ram sale. Progeny from this sire will be available this season. The Morrisons have decided not to hold an on-property field day in 2011 but Nigel and Damien are encouraging producers from around the State to come and have a look at their rams on-farm in Brookton, by contacting either themselves or Landmark Brookton agent Chris Turton. Producers can also view San-Mateo rams during the Farm Weekly Southern Districts Merino Field Days at the Williams Sportsground on Tuesday, August displaying at williams sportsground Flock No 425 FIELD DAY Tuesday, August 16, Williams Sportsground SALE ON-PROPERTY Wednesday, October DROP RAMS Private selections available from Monday, October 24 Studmasters/Classers: BOB & PETER JACKSON Stud consultant: BRUCE CAMERON Contact: PETER & NATALIE JACKSON Ph/Fax Flock No STUD CALENDAR FIELD DAYS Tuesday, August 16 Showing at Williams Sportsground September 7 & 8 Flock No 1381 Displaying at Williams Sportsground Tuesday, August 16 Contact: Scott Pickering SALE 50th On-Property Ram Sale Wagin Thursday, September 22 Newdegate Machinery Field Days drop Poll Merino rams Contact MALCOLM, YVONNE & RAYMOND EDWARD Ph Fax Mob WA MERINO 2011

10 Merino Piesse de resistance Bob (left) and Thomas Piesse working in the sheep yards. By TONY HUGHES-OWEN IF you re going to shear sheep you re best to shear good ones. That s just one of the philosophies of Williams Merino enthusiast Bill Piesse. Bill and his wife Beth and their son Thomas and twin daughters Ellen and Claire farm on their picturesque Murndal property which runs east from the corner of Albany Highway and the Tarwonga/ Piesseville road south of Williams. Bill s farming background has always been in wool and grain production and depending upon seasonal conditions they shear between 4500 and 5500 sheep each March at Murndal. Of that number around 2000 are breeding ewes, which are run as a selfreplacing Merino flock. 70 WA MERINO 2011 In recent years the annual draft of coming up cast-forage ewes have been joined to prime lamb sires to lamb down in early May, while those ewes joined to Merinos lamb down from early July. We join our older ewes to prime lamb sires to utilise the spring flush, the lambs going off contracted to live export markets and the ewes sold when having put on a bit of condition after weaning, Bill said. The balance of the annual shearing is wethers, in a good year up to four age groups are run. There s nothing like older wethers to fill the bales, Bill said. And in a year like we ve all just experienced it s better to be able to quit wethers if need be, rather than cutting into your ewe breeding flock if numbers have to be reduced. The property name Murndal was also that which Bill s late father-in-law Bill Hardacre and his wife Marie gave to the Merino stud they founded in the mid 1960s. The stud was bred on Collinsville bloodlines along with the introduction of sires and semen from the Glenroy stud, Gnowangerup and the then Strathglen stud, Tambellup. However with the death of Bill Hardacre, the stud flock was sold to fellow stud breeders, the Patterson family, Woolkabin, Woodanilling, with the well-recognised commercial flock remaining on Murndal. Rams of Murndal bloodlines were bought in from the Patterson family for a number of years but of late, bloodlines from well known local studs have been used. Tarwonga is pretty much best suited to grazing and only about 30 percent of Murndal is cropped annually to oats which when harvested are stored on property as supplementary sheep feed. Any surplus grain is sold if no longer required. The sheep and wool program at Murndal fits in very well with the family s cropping operation on another property in the Wagin region. The Williams region is well recognised as a top wool producing area and we are fortunate to have very good local services available for the likes of shearing and crutching and pretty much all other livestock requirements, Bill said. This makes the running of Merino sheep a lot easier when most things are pretty much on your doorstep. We ve all gone through close on 20 years of pretty ordinary wool prices but a gradual rise in sheep meat
11 Some older March shorn Murndal ewes. prices in recent years did put a bit of faith back into the industry. Thankfully on the wool side of things, producers are seeing good rises in values at long last and the general feeling is, along with the rise in meat prices due to the reduction in overall sheep numbers of late, that values for both meat and wool should remain strong for some time. Also having a bearing on values, particularly wethers, is the live export market which is imperative to the WA sheep industry here. And I do have to sympathise with those young farmers who came home to the farm from school in the 1990 s, they are now in their 40 s and really, until now, have not seen any good sheep times over those 20 years. You can understand with the big changes in cropping in that time why they could have turned away from sheep in favour of more cropping. Their son Thomas, aged 22, is now the fourth generation farming on Murndal, with his great grandfather having taken the land up in Thomas did a three year apprenticeship course with Komatsu Welshpool when he finished school and has now been back on the farm for just over a year and just put in his second crop. He also enjoys sheep work as recent times have seen sheep farming a good deal more rewarding, along with new innovations such as electronic drafting and creep feeding easing the workload somewhat. Bill and Beth s twin daughters Ellen and Claire are both in their second year at Notre Dame University, with Ellen studying nursing and Claire, physical and health education Focused on getting the best results for commercial producers throughout WA We are here to help you!
