2 P.O. Box 632, Balwyn, Vic Phone: (03) Web : DECEMBER 2012 NEWSLETTER From the President PETER RUSSELL Season s greetings to all Texel members. I hope the season has been good for you all. Rams have been harder to sell during the spring season with the correction to lamb prices. However producers who know the benefits of the Texel breed have been buying quality rams. The shows have been well supported with quality sheep being exhibited at many shows across the country. The Victorian/South Australian Ram and Ewe of the Year both ran well with close finishes. Many thanks to Westside Meats and WFI for their continued sponsorship of these events. Our major sponsors CEVA, Norbrook, Lincoln University and Lienert have been very supportive of the Texel breed so please support them where you can as we hope their generous sponsorship will continue. Texel quality has been rewarded in carcase competitions, so well done to those breeders who have exhibited and keep up the good work will be our 20 th year of Texels in Australia. We will celebrate this by being feature breed at our National Show in Bendigo. Our aim will be to have over 100 sheep exhibited at the show. I know it can be a large job in preparing sheep, however it is a good benchmark for your sheep as well as a way to show other breeds and buyers that we do have strength in our Texels within the industry. On 20 th July 2013 we will have a dinner at The Boardwalk Restaurant to reminisce and celebrate the 20 years. You will receive the invitation to the dinner with this Newsletter publication, and it will also be available from the Texel website under News. Please forward to former members who may have changed their address, or are no longer in touch with the breed. Prompt reply would be appreciated. Lincoln University has offered Australian breeders as well as their New Zealand breeders a microphthalmia test at a reduced cost. To take advantage of this price the breeder must commit to testing their whole flock. This can be done over a three year period. Council feels this is not mandatory, however the option is available. If you decide to proceed, you will need to register directly with Lincoln University, c/o John Bates at jbates@ihug.co.nz. We have retained the services of Peter Weston as our Secretary for hopefully a further five years until he retires. It is good to have Peter on board with his excellent service. Many happy returns Peter on your recent 70 th birthday. Thanks to all members and councillors for their work and support in running the Association. 3 WAMMCO Producer of the Month Te Rakau clients won the October 2012 producer of the month award. Bremer Bay lamb producers Wayne and Tara Pittard took the title with a line of mostly Texel sired lambs out of Border Leicester-Merino cross ewes. It was the first non-prime SAMM win since December The consignment averaged kg and was valued at $3.68/kg to return $86.29 a head, including skin. The Pittards are now retaining the best of their half Texel ewes out of Border Leicester/Merino dams to mate them back to Texels. The second-cross lambs are now on the ground and showing great potential. buyer confidence in the industry led to a diminishing overall sale average compared to last year and a similar disappointing sale clearance. Te Rakau sold 12 rams for an average of $688. Philip Balcombe The Cranbrook Texel stud of Philip Balcombe, Canowindra, NSW apparently has won the supreme meat sheep ewe sash at the Dubbo Show for the three years Front cover: David Leigh, Laani stud, with his champion ram, 2012 Royal Geelong Show. Auction Sales The Jimjan stud of the Glover family, Boyup Brook, WA sold 16 flock rams at the Kojonup Triple S ram sale in October to a top of $1200 and averaged $713. At the 2012 Moora British & Australasian Breeds Sale the sale s $1200 top price eventuated when a deep, well muscled Te Rakau Texel sire was snapped up by Bill Wallace of Millbrook Texel stud, York. Mr Wallace purchased the sire after seeing him at the Perth Royal Show where he stood out for his great conformation. 4 John Bresnehan John Bresnehan, Tiger Point, Levendale, Tas passed away in March Niece Gabbi currently owns the Tiger Point stud. Scots PGC College Nigel Grant, Director of Learning at The Scots PGC College, Warwick, QLD reported in March that his Sheep Club students take a team of sheep to approximately eight shows each year. The students are aged years and learn so much from their participation in the activities of the show, including junior judges. Of course, they compete in open competition against commercial breeders and Nigel was pleased to say they manage to hold their own pretty well. Scots PGC students at the Inglewood Show. 5 To add value to your Australian Texel Stud Breeders Association membership, we like to keep you informed of product and services offered by our alliance partners. One of these companies is WFI. WFI, part of Wesfarmers Insurance, specialises in the provision of insurance packages to farmers and business owners across the nation and provides a high level of professional service from a network of over 150 experienced Area Managers situated across Australia. Our Association is an alliance partner of WFI. As such, the Association receives a small commission each time one of our members takes out or renews an insurance policy with WFI (except for Western Australia). These extra funds help us continue to support the Association and its activities. For more information on any WFI products and services or for an obligation free quote, contact your local Area Manager. Alternatively, you can visit If you have any queries about your membership, please do not hesitate to contact the ATSBA Head Office. NZ SIL Performance Measurement The following report from Maria Wood was recorded in the AGM minutes of 20/7/12. The handbook from SIL can be found at User-Booklet.aspx Interesting to note that Texels have their own index within SIL. There are 12 SIL bureaus in NZ, and Julia Aspinall of Genetic Gains in Invercargill is willing to act as bureau for us. Julia said that: SIL is a very valuable tool for sheep breeders and I believe that breeders are very fortunate to have access to such a powerful and relevant recording scheme. Australian breeders are more than welcome to join! The only way to access SIL is through an existing bureau, and ours would be very happy to do the honours. We could possibly organise a bureau in Australia within our bureau, or each Australian breeder could work directly with us which would be easier. Neither John Bates nor Jon Hickford are actively involved with SIL (though they sure are experts in gene tests), so may not be able to help too much but we can certainly send over some information for your AGM. Members interested in SIL please contact Maria Wood. Phone: (08) Mobile: terakau@bigpond.com ATSBA December Newsletter 2012 Page 5

6 Louise Smith, Cardigan Village, Vic and daughter Ella with the latest addition to their family, Amy Smith. Congratulations to Councillor Ashley and his wife Louise. Congratulations also to another Councillor Jennifer Hodgson, Tas, and husband John McKimmie, on the birth of their baby boy. Microphthalmia Accreditation Program (From John Bates, Lincoln University, NZ) Lincoln University has been working with the Australian Texel Stud Breeders Association to develop an affordable eradication program for microphthalmia in Australian Texels. Like New Zealand, we now see very few affected lambs in the stud industry. This is because virtually all stud sires are now tested so even when the defective gene is present in the stud ewes no visual signs in lambs are seen because only clear rams have been used. In New Zealand the eradication program is now in place and while the issue in New Zealand is more pressing because of the wide use of Texel genetics as a component in our maternal flocks, it does mean that Australia can get on top of this problem before it spreads outside of their breed. What I have proposed to Peter Russell is that your Association runs the program and our role will be mainly one of offering the most affordable test possible and providing advice as we always have to your Association and individual breeders. ATSBA December Newsletter 2012 Page 6

7 How it would work is that you would either notify us or your Association that you wish to be part of the program (both your Association and ourselves will keep a register of who is on the program). If you contact your Association they will then notify us so that you can be registered into the scheme. Once in the program the breeder has three years of discounted testing to eradicate microphthalmia from their flock. Your Association will manage the eradication program and develop systems to issue microphthalmia free status to properties when they are proven clear. As part of this program your Association will be able to access your test results from us to verify your status if required. In New Zealand they are proposing to set up a subcommittee to limit the number of people who see the results. We will still offer the test at our commercial rates to breeders who only want to test rams or don t want to be part of this program (where a farmer is not part of the program we will observe strict confidentiality of results as we always have and they will not be available to anyone other than the breeder involved). Once a breeder confirms that they are part of the program then they will be offered a discounted price of $10 (Australian) per test. This discount will be available to the breeder for three years from the time of notification and is only available to those breeders who are looking to eradicate microphthalmia from their stud flock (which will mean testing of ewes). If you have any queries you can contact: John Bates at jbates@ihug.co.nz or or OR Jon Hickford at Jon.Hickford@lincoln.ac.nz or extn: 8186 or Our website is Stored Texel Semen for Sale Former member Helen Hendrickson has advised she has semen available from the following rams: Wyndham A17/93 (1328) 137 straws/pellets Greenlea D312/93 (308) 2 straws/pellets Southern Pastures 178/96 (1492) 13 straws/pellets Champion at 1998 Hamilton Sheepvention and reserve champion at the Royal Melbourne Show. 8 2012 Perth Royal Show There were three Texel exhibitors with 42 entries at the 2012 Perth Royal Show. Judge was Graeme Hibbard, Deepdene, Narrandera, NSW who awarded the champion ewe sash to the Jimjan stud of the Glover family, Boyup Brook, WA. Mr Hibbard described the champion as a very structurally correct ewe, with adequate muscle and meat qualities, and a great style. He also selected her for supreme exhibit. Jimjan also exhibited the champion ram and won a total of five first placed ribbons including the breeders group of one ram and two ewes. Mirovi stud exhibited the reserve champion ram and group of three rams while the Te Rakau stud exhibited reserve champion ewe. Overall Mr Hibbard was extremely impressed with the standard of all the entries. (From a Farm Weekly report) Jimjan stud won most of the major awards at the 2012 Perth Royal Show. Pictured here are Kristy Robertson (Glover), Wes, Jan and Jim Glover, with the champion ram and the champion ewe which was the supreme exhibit. 9 Perth Royal Carcase Competition Seven exhibitors entered 35 pens of three lambs in the 2012 Perth Royal hook and hook competition. Rob and Maria Wood, Te Rakau, Bindi Bindi, WA were delighted to hear they had won the prestigious champion lamb carcase award for the second time in three years. The champion came from a pen of three Texel-Texel/Merino cross lambs not more than 14 weeks old and selected straight off their mothers. When weighed at home the lambs averaged 44.8kg, the winning carcase was 22.8kg and had been entered in the lightweight class. Jim and Jan Glover, Jimjan, Boyup Brook, had the champion pen of three lambs on the hook with Texel- Merino cross; best pen of three lightweight lambs on the hook (18-22 kg cwt) open, with Texel and Texel-Merino cross, and a third; and second in pen of three heavyweight lambs (22.1 kg plus cwt) on the hook. Texel Cross Carcases Make $24/kg Succulent spring lamb chops were on everyone s minds and butchers bid up solidly at the third annual prime lamb carcase auction at the 2012 IGA Perth Royal Show. Despite last year s event being described by many as an extraordinary sale where most pens attracted frenzied bidding and saw prices reaching dizzying heights of $5500, things were a bit more subdued this year. Landmark auctioneer John Wirth said it was a fair and solid sale throughout with vendors getting paid for the preparation that went into their lambs. Butchers were willing to pay well above current market prices as the promotion they get out of the sale is second to none, he said. Achieving the top price honour this year was the Glover family s Jimjan Texel stud, Boyup Brook, when their three Texel-Merino cross carcases caught the eye of many potential buyers. With the champion carcase from this year s Perth Royal Show prime lamb competition were Mondo Meats principal Vince Gareffa, Inglewood, who purchased the group of carcases the champion was in and exhibitors Maria and Rob Wood, Te Rakau Texel stud, Bindi Bindi. (Photo courtesy WA Farm Weekly) Bids flew in thick and fast for the overall champion threesome on the hook until regular top price purchaser, Chris Faulds, Marco s Fussy Meats, Applecross, placed the winning bid of $1600. ATSBA December Newsletter 2012 Page 9

10 At this price the carcases were worth $533 each or $24 a kilogram. The three meaty carcases had a combined weight of 65.6 kg with an average fat GR measurement of 11.7 mm. The lambs were early Junedrop and had been weaned straight off commercial Texel- Merino first cross ewes and brought to the sale. Mr Faulds said he was very pleased with the quality of carcases he purchased at the sale and producers must be commended for their efforts. The champion carcases will be offered in our Yangebup and Applecross stores, he said. Vince Gareffa, Mondo Meats, Inglewood, wasn t leaving empty-handed and quickly snapped up the group containing the champion Texel-Merino cross carcase in the open division for $820. The three were exhibited by the Wood s family, Te Rakau Texel stud, Bindi Bindi and had a combined carcase weight of 67.7 kg and an average fat depth of 17 mm. Mr Gareffa said all the lambs in the auction would be outstanding to eat, but only half of them would be outstanding to make money. The champion carcase will give me that ability, with no need to trim, he said. It has beautiful muscle definition, amazing length of loin, wonderful chubby legs and good shoulders. Along with this pen, Mondo Meats also purchased a pen of the Glover family s for $500. The Meat Safe, Subiaco, who was losing bidder on the toppriced pen saw the quality in many lots and paid $600 for three Texel-Merino cross lamb carcases once again exhibited by the Glover family. 16 150 th Canterbury Show at Christchurch (NZ) In November I was honoured to be asked to judge the Texels at the Canterbury Show which was a large show with 1300 sheep, 80 of which were Texels. The quality was outstanding and consistent through all the classes. Judging was very different to what I know. The sheep were exhibited in one large pen. It was a little overwhelming at first when you have 33 ram hoggets run into the ring, but working through the process and after a period of time I found my champions. The champion ram which went on to win supreme exhibit went to Gary Donald, Kowhai Park stud while champion ewe went to Liz Reed, Broadgate stud. The hospitality shown by the New Zealand Texel breeders was fantastic. It was good to associate with like-minded breeders who have very similar issues as we do in Australia. Judge Peter Russell (right) and the champion ram and supreme Texel at the 2012 Canterbury (NZ) Show, with the winning exhibitor Gary Donald, Kowhai Park, Rangiora, NZ. We look forward to returning the hospitality when they attend Bendigo for our 20 th anniversary. The Canterbury Show is a true old traditional show with over 100,000 people attending for three days, with a large array of machinery, exhibitions and animals, even some royalty which we missed seeing as we were heading to the airport. If you ever have the opportunity it is a show well worth visiting as many other Australians of all breeds do. 17 Westside Meats Ram of the Year During the 2012 sheep show season we saw quality sheep shown in Victoria at the ASBA Bendigo, Hamilton Sheepvention, Horsham and Geelong Royal. Ram of the year was again another close competition with additional studs Laani, Summit Park and Lyndale Park taking part. After Bendigo and Sheepvention we saw Cypress Park, Laani, Mertex and Tullamore Park with rams on 10 and 11 points, which was very consistent with judges Geoff Johnson and Peter Hood s choices. Horsham s judge David Jackson had Tullamore Park champion Peter Russell (left) and Ray Clark, buyer for Westside Meats ram leading. Willaren taking Australia, hold the sash for the Vic-SA Texel Ram of the Year. Liz reserve, showing quality rams Russell holds Tullamore Park 91/11. at their first Victorian show for the season. Geelong Royal was the decider for studs, where judge Ross Hamilton awarded Laani champion ram and Tullamore Park reserve. Westside Meats Australia The final score for the Westside Meats Ram of the Year was: 1 st Tullamore Park 91/11 22pts 2 nd Laani 30/11 20pts 3 rd Tullamore Park 120/10 19pts Located one hour west of Melbourne, Westside Meats Australia and its surrounding districts have been producing prime quality lamb for many years. Due to its location a unique climatic environment has been formed, a balance of the right amount of sun and rain has provided sustainable green pastures for our lamb to graze and buy from farms and markets. Our team of processors then further selects only the best lamb carcases for sale under the Westside Meats Australia Brand. 18 Liz and Peter Russell with the 2012 WFI Victorian/SA Ewe of the Year, Tullamore Park 40/10 which has twin lambs at foot. WFI Victorian Ewe of the Year 2012 After Bendigo and Sheepvention we saw studs Mertex and Tullamore Park in close contention with ewes on 12 and 11 points respectively. After Horsham show there was a reversal with one point difference. By Geelong Royal the sheep that were younger had grown and taken the older ewes points so the ewe of the year ended closely. The final result for the WFI Victorian Ewe of the Year: 1 st Tullamore Park 40/10 22 pts 2 nd Mertex 66/11 20 pts 3 rd Tullamore Park 90/11 19 pts Thank you to our major sponsors for supporting this competition.
