In particular, we encourage you to exhibit, whether competitive or non-competitive - the aim being to introduce the public to the enjoyment we get from shells and to socialise and renew acquaintances. Venue The show venue, Toitu Poneke Community and Sports Centre ( the Hub ), is located at 3 Kilbirnie Crescent, Wellington. The show facilities comprise three upstairs rooms overlooking Kilbirnie park. There is lift access, parking adjacent to the venue, a bus-stop nearby and the premises are security locked at night. All activities will be held on the premises. There is no café on site but free tea and coffee will be available for registrants. There are several food outlets in the nearby Kilbirnie shops and the Brentwood Hotel, within 10 minutes walk, can provide drinks and bar snacks by a poolside setting. Registration There is a registration fee of $20 (single) and $25 (double / family) for non-wellington Shell Club members. Registration will provide you with a name badge that will entitle you to free entry for all days of the show, the Meet and Greet function, shell auctions and prize-giving. If you wish to attend any of the functions, notwithstanding whether you are exhibiting or not, you need to complete and return the enclosed registration form by October 14 th You can enter as many classes as you wish and have more than one entry per class; all entries will be deemed to be competitive unless registrants indicate otherwise on the registration form. Your registration implies acceptance of the rules (see over). A kit providing exhibitor instructions and updated program information will be available for all registrants on arrival at the show reception desk. Page 1 of 6

2 Functions All show registrants are invited to the Meet and Greet function from 6 pm to 7.30 pm on Friday. Complimentary finger food will be available and a cash bar will operate for drinks and bar snacks. Anyone may attend the Auction, Prize-Giving and/or Dinner on Saturday, commencing with the auction at 5 pm. The auction will comprise quality items that will be on display from 3 pm. Anyone wishing to enter items in the auction must contact Kerry Walton at walton.kerry@gmail.com by September 1 st. The Wellington Shell Club will take 10% commission on items sold. The Prize-Giving will begin at around 6 pm. Only persons who have registered in advance and paid may attend the dinner, which is expected to start around 7 pm. The dinner will comprise a buffet selection at $45 / person and $27 for a child aged 12 and under. Anyone may place items in the Silent Auction on Sunday afternoon providing there is table space and they are placed on the tables provided by 1 pm. Bidding sheets will be available and the Wellington Shell Club will take 10% of the prices realised. The silent auction will close for written bids at 3 pm and this will be strictly enforced. Packing up of exhibits may commence at 4 pm and the bar will be open to purchase drinks and bar snacks from 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm. Dealer, Sales and Swap Tables Dealers and sellers of shells and related items are welcome to attend. No commission will be charged on items sold and tables will cost $80 per day hired. It will cost $10 per table for show registrants to hire a table for the sell /swap /buy session on Sunday morning. Other than the Wellington Shell Club sales tables, shell sales on the premises may be undertaken by paid table holders only and not before Saturday. Transport and Accommodation The show venue is located about 3 km from Wellington Airport and a further 4 km from Wellington City. The first stop for the Airport Flyer (orange bus no.91) after leaving the airport is the Kilbirnie shops, which is about a 10 minute walk to the show venue. It then stops only once more in Hataitai before Wellington city. The airport bus currently runs between 6.35 am and 9.25 pm on weekdays and 7 am and 8.45 pm at weekends. The Kilbirnie shopping centre, at the intersection of Bay and Rongotai Roads, is a hub for most transport facilities in the area. The no.2 bus stops at Kilbirnie and opposite the show venue before continuing on into the city. There are six accommodation providers within close proximity of the show (refer map) and many provide free transport to / from Wellington airport. The Brentwood Hotel has 116 rooms and has offered a discount to those attending the show. Further details are available from the accommodation listing on the club website or by contacting the club secretary. For those with self-contained camper vans, the nearest site is 500 m away at the corner of Evans Bay Parade and Cobham Drive. For Wellington restaurants and night life - try Cuba Street and Courtenay Place; for shopping - Willis Street and Lambton Quay are best. The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is located on the Wellington waterfront off Cable Street. Quarantine Requirements You must declare all shells and shell related items (animal products) on arrival in New Zealand. You are advised to ensure shells are clean and to check the CITES appendices for prohibited / controlled entry items. Other Activities The triennial scientific conference of the Malacological Society of Australasia will be held in Wellington from the 2 nd to the 5 th of December. NZ Best Specimen collected from Wellington, Kapiti, Horowhenua or Wairarapa beaches 8. NZ Shells from one Location or Region World Wide (W/W) Classes 9. W/W Open Family or Subfamily or Genus 20 shells (refer rules 4 and 8) 10. W/W Open Family or Subfamily or Genus 20 shells of size 10 cm or less (refer rules 4 and 8) 11. W/W Bivalves 20 shells (refer rule 4) 12. W/W 5 Families, 3 of each (refer rule 4) 13. W/W Variation of One Species - minimum of 4 varieties 14. W/W Single Specimen - not NZ or Australia (refer rule 4) 15. W/W Single Australian Specimen (refer rule 4) Other - can comprise all NZ or all W/W Shells or mix of both 16. Land, Freshwater, Fossils or Chitons (refer rule 4) 17. Colour display - can be single or mixed colours - labels not required 18. Scientific / Educational 19. Photography or Art or Craft - must be shell related and exhibitor s own work (refer rule 6) 20. Shell(s) with a Story 21. Shell Related Thematic Display - your choice of theme (i.e., stamps / one country / shapes / etc. but not favourite or best shells unless a junior exhibitor 22. Open General - your choice of display - must be shell related Certificates will be awarded for all placings. Highly commended certificates may be awarded at the discretion of the judges. Juniors refer to rule 9. Trophies are available for: Shell of Show; Best New Zealand Shell; Best Australian Shell (refer to rule 7 for these three trophies); also Best New Zealand Exhibit and Best World Wide Exhibit. 4 SHOW RULES 1. Entry is open to all amateur or private collectors of shells. Not eligible to compete are persons engaged in the sale of shells as their total means of income. Competitive exhibits must be the property of the exhibitor. Displays can be deemed non-competitive if desired but this must be indicated on the registration form. 2. Arrangement of displays must be between 12 noon to 6 pm on Friday 30 November. No display may be dismantled before 4 pm Sunday and all entries must be clear of the exhibit room by 6 pm. 3. New Zealand displays must only contain shells collected within the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (endemic or not) - this includes the Kermadec, Chatham and New Zealand subantarctic Islands. 4. While judges will not be issued with specific marking criteria it can be expected that:- a. Single Specimen shells will be judged primarily on quality (classes 5/6 and 14/15) and Worldwide and New Zealand Family and Bivalve classes (1 to 3 and 9 to ) will take quality, presentation, variety and accuracy of labels into account. In respect to the classes nominated in rule 4a:- judges may take data presented with specimens into account, but not rarity or value, unless necessary to separate exhibits. variety is the extent of variation displayed appropriate to the class - i.e. genus, species, location, size, shape and colour. neat handwritten labels will not be penalised, neither will the lack or presence of an operculum; a full label would include the Latin name of the shell, author and date described, plus locality data. Names of New Zealand species are expected to be up to date with the Checklist of Recent Mollusca available at: and the World Register of Marine Species on will be used as an arbiter of non New Zealand marine species. b. Remaining classes will be at the judges discretion. 5. Displays must not be larger than 1 metre by 70 cm and may be displayed in either landscape or portrait orientation as indicated on the registration form. The display may consist of more than one tray, provided the total area does not exceed the above dimensions. All exhibits should have a transparent cover (glass, laminate or similar) to prevent the public touching specimens. Display boxes must be accessible, but unless absolutely essential, judging will be closed box. 6. Photography and Art entries will not be hung and a title may be included if desired, to explain their connection to shells / shell collecting. Computer generated work is eligible provided this is created / designed by the exhibitor. 7. Shell of Show and Single specimen trophies will be awarded from shells in the Single Specimen classes (5 to 7 and 14/15). However judges will consider shells in other classes if exhibitors nominate the shell by name and class it is in on the registration form. 8. The Shell Show Committee reserves the right to reject any entry, or to amalgamate or split classes. This applies particularly to the Open Family classes (1 and 9/10) and exhibitors in these classes are asked to indicate the family entered on their registration form. 9. Juniors aged 12 or under are encouraged to enter any show classes. Separate awards will be made for juniors who should enter their age on the registration form so this can be communicated to the judges. 10. Only shell show officials will be present during judging and the judges decision will be final. All trophies awarded at this show are the property of the Wellington, Auckland or Whangarei Shell Clubs and must be returned at the request of the relevant club. The greatest care will be taken with all displays; however the Wellington Shell Club takes no responsibility for the loss or damage of any exhibit or shell. Page 4 of 6
