3 Welcome to Glenfinnan Prime Lamb Genetics Fifth Annual Ram Lamb Sale. Flock History: The flock was first established in 1978 on the Monaro by Anna s father Jock Litchfield who in conjunction with the University of NSW started crossbreeding Suffolks and Dorset's and line breeding the whitest progeny. Earlier breeding trials had indicated that the Suffolk breed produced fast growing, well muscled lambs, but these were penalised in the market because of their black fibres. Jock received the first three ewes released from the Hay Research Station, and for the next few years, in conjunction with a small but growing number of interested producers, received a ram in return for his three best ram lambs. In 1984 the nucleus flock from the University of NSW was sold to PLG (Prime Lamb Genetics), a group of 35 ram breeders who ran the flock at Charles Sturt University Wagga Wagga, NSW, of which Jock was a part. This group had a breeding program that accessed the top genetics, with the aim of breeding modern, profit-making sires for commercial lamb production. In 1996 we purchased the stud from Jock and for the past 21 years have been striving to produce rams with traits that are economically important for a successful prime lamb production. Since the stud has been at Bullaworrie, we have sourced some of the best White Suffolk Genetics from across Australia, selecting for early maturity, growth rate, eye muscle size and carcass conformation. It is an advantage to see the ram at the same age as the progeny that you wish to sell. If you should encounter a problem with any ram you purchase within 12 months of the purchase date we will replace the ram with one of equal quality and value, or credit the full amount less GST against any ram you purchase from us in the future.

4 Glenfinnan Prime Lamb Genetics 4 LAMBPLAN understanding LAMBPLAN to make consistent genetic improvement. Glenfinnan Prime Lamb Genetics use LAMBPLAN to provide accurate information on the genetic merit of all animals in each flock. LAMBPLAN is Australia s genetic information system for sheep breeders and producers. In LAMBPLAN, performance and pedigree information is combined to give Australian Sheep Breeding Values ASVB s which are simple pictures of the values of each animals genes. ASBV s are provided in this catalogue for 5 main traits: Birth Weight (bwt): Describes the animals genetic value for weight at birth. A higher ASVB will mean the progeny will be genetically heavier at birth. It is important to combine an average type birth weight with ram shape (shoulders and head). Weaning Weight (wwt): Describes the animals genetic value for growth. A higher ASVB will mean the animal is genetically faster growing in the first 100 days. A higher early growth rate will benefit those produces who sell their lambs as suckers or target the trade market. Post Weaning Weight (pwwt) Describes the animals genetic value for growth. A higher ASVB will mean the animal is genetically faster growing over 225 days. A higher post weaning weight will benefit those producers who sell as trade or keep their lambs for longer to target the export market. Fat (pfat): Describes the value of the animals genes for fat depth. A negative ASVB means a genetically leaner animal. A ram joining to X bred ewes will need to be leaner than one joining to merinos or if the progeny is being marketed at 8-11 months of age. Muscle (pemd): describes the value of the animals genes for muscling. The higher the ASVB for eye muscle means the animal has genetically more meat which means a potentially better yield.

5 Glenfinnan Prime Lamb Genetics 5 LAMBPLAN INDEX VALUES: In addition, the catalogue includes LAMBPLAN Index Values. These combine the ASVB s for Weight, Fat and Eye Muscle Depth in a single measure of genetic merit. The index s used in this catalogue are: Carcase Plus which describes the value of the rams genetics at 6 months of age (post weaning) and is the most relevant for prime lamb production. The Lamb 2020 Eating Quality Index is targeted at terminal producers interested in improving the meat eating quality of their prime lambs while continuing to improve production traits in a balanced way. The table below gives a summary of the genetic merit of this years Glenfinnan Prime Lamb Genetics sale rams compared to the average of all terminal breeds. All Glenfinnan PLG sale rams are in the top 10% of the terminal breed for Carcase Plus, Lamb Eating Quality and muscling. They are in the top 20% for weaning and post weaning weight and the top 35% for fat. He is a long smooth shouldered ram with outstanding growth. We have joined him to ewes that have produced progeny with tremendous early growth, good muscling and style. Exceptional growth and eye muscle combined with great shape of carcase. He is well represented in the sale and is great for any prime lamb enterprise. He is a proven sire and his progeny would be a great choice as a sire over merino or maidens with his low birth weight and positive fat. He has terrific, well balanced figures and is a long smooth stylish ram with low birth weight for ease of lambing. He is well represented in the sale and his progeny would suit any sheep breed.
