1 MARKET REPORT FOR TUESDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER A total entry 2100 Sheep entered at Stratford this week starting with a good entry of fat lambs which saw a lift in price. A good entry of Cull Ewes and also a great turn out and an excellent trade in the field with the Breeding Sheep Sale. Also on this day, as every week, we have the Produce, Fur & Feather auction seeing in excess of 1000 lots go under the hammer, to include Garden and House Plants, Fresh Fruit & Vegetables, Hatching Eggs, and a wide range of Poultry, Ducks and much more. If you haven t been to Stratford for a while come and see for yourself. Buyers and sellers are most welcome, we have stalls selling all sorts of goods, from gardening and DIY items, confectionary, jewellery, homeware and work boots and shoes, and don t forget the resident Butcher who sells all types of quality meat, Pies etc. Also our café is always open for light refreshments, with its brilliant delightful staff serving quality food and drinks. 2 New Season Lambs Entered - Sold at 10.30am Auctioneer Alastair Brown It was nice to see more lambs about this week and along that came a lift in the price, topping at 195p or 99. Standard lambs sold from 172p to 185.5p for Roger Righton s entry of 38.5kg Suffolks, followed by 181.5p from T Hill with an entry of 14 Charolais at 39kg, and then Tim Withers at 181p for his 36kg Charolais. In the Medium weight section, prices sold from 175.5p to 195p for a pen of twelve 45.5kg lambs from John Peebles, and others in this category sold to 187p for 42kg lambs from George Dancer and Vernon Phipps, whilst John North s entry just ½ pence behind at 186.5p for his 45kg Texels. Heavy lambs sold from 174p to 185p for Vernon Phipps with an entry of 14 Beltex x 46kg lambs, followed by Mark Greenaway at 183p for his 48kg lambs. Top price per head in the standard weight category sold to for eleven 38.5kg Suffolks from Roger Righton. In the medium weight category, lambs sold to for John Peebles, for John North and for Ray & Pam Stone, all weighing 45.5kg, Heavy weights sold to for Andy Burrows with lambs at 51kg, other heavy lambs 50kg sold to 87.84, and for FH Loggin, Ray Page and John North. More lambs are required each week if you have some please let Alastair know then he can give the buyers an accurate expected entry to encourage other buyers Store Lambs - 52 Entered Auctioneer Alastair Brown A small entry due to the sale in the field, prices toped at for a pen of 21 Texels from R Last, and other pens topped at 56 for P Bullock, whilst some longer term lambs sold to for H Smith & Sons. More are needed each week, we have plenty of buyers looking for lambs, and with some heavy showers and warm ground the grass will be soon back in abundance. 3 Cull Ewes & Rams Entered Auctioneer Alastair Brown A good row of Ewes today saw prices top at 80 for Ray & Pam Stone with their Continental ewe, and 80 for 7 Suffolks from Mrs C Plunkett. Vernon Phipps entry of 6 Beltex ewes topped at 78 and his Suffolks realised 77. Top Price Mules topped at 67 for Chris Slatter, with his others at More are needed each week if you have some to market please contact Alastair. Breeding Sheep and Store Lambs Auctioneer Alastair Brown A good entry forward met an exceptional trade and a fantastic day to hold a sale in the field, the sun shone on the righteous. Starting with the store lambs plenty of people bidding with confidence to see prices reach for a pen of 20 Continentals from John Bourne & Son, next top was a pen of 30 Charollais at 70 for Townsend Farms. Store lambs sold from for some longer term lambs, taking the average to well over 60. Moving to the sale ring first, where the Ewe lambs topped at 92 for a pen of eight Texels from Rob Hutchings, next top went to a pen of 3 Cotswold lambs from S Jacka at 80, other Texels topped at 76 for W Bartlett & Son, Continentals sold to for Bruce Minett, whilst 49 Suffolks from WRJ Organ sold to 74, another large entry of Suffolks sold to entered by AR & PR Whitmill and Thorneycroft Farms, averaging 71. Next through ring 1 Breeding Theaves, a very strong trade for all lots seeing a top price of 200 for 3 Pedigree Charollais from GS Taylor. Mules where very sort after topping at 143 for JD Lilwall, with others at 141, and also selling Mules at that price were J & R Gardner and A Cook. Following the Theaves a number of Mule ewes from 6T to Full Mouth and broken mouths topping at 85 for CW Cowper, whilst David Rand saw his entry of 50 sell to 82.
4 Moving to ring 2 saw the MV Rams, with Suffolks commanding the top price at 550gns and 540gns for J B & R L Cook. A large entry of Charollais came next topping at 525gns for AD & RM Thomas, with his 5 others topping at 500gns, along with CW Thomas selling twice at 500gns. Ram lambs sold to 400gns for a Charollais from CW Thomas and A D & RM Thomas In the 3 rd ring selling the Non Accredited Rams, prices reached 510gns for GS Taylor with his Charollais. Other Charollais from Nicola Hemming sold to 310gns from 290gns, averaging 300gns. Suffolk Ram lambs sold to 240gns for H Page & Son, and Texel Shearlings sold to 300gns for M Ironmonger. Overall a very successful day was achieved, just showing that Stratford is more than capable of holding larger sales. Fur Feather and Produce Lots Sold at 10.00am Auctioneer Shaun Barron Plants A smaller entry sold to similar rates with the first of the bedding plants shown today. Trays of Pansies sold for 1 each, Lupins sold to 1 with Lavender and Delphiniums at A large Hydrangea made 4 with Orchids selling from Between 4-6. Bags of compost sold to Eggs An entry dominated by trays of chicken eggs, selling to a strong trade topping at 3 a tray from 2.80 and 2.60, with ½ dozen Guinea Fowl at 1 and a dozen Duck eggs at Braces of Rabbits sold for 5 a brace.
5 Produce Another huge entry of quality produce sold to similar rates, to a larger crowd of purchasers. Bags of Tomatoes sold to 1.20 from 1, bags of Stick Beans sold to 1 from 80p, small Cabbages and Marrows both sold for 50p with Sweetcorn at 40p. Bags of Apples at 40p and punnets of Raspberries sold for the same. Potatoes sold for 2 a bag with punnets of Plums making 70-80p. Poultry Another good entry starting with some sundries. A small poultry house made 22, rolls of chicken wire made 15 and a large metal feeder made 10. Hens with Chicks sold for 25, 24 and 23. A Golden Pheasant made 12 while Welsummer pullets sold for 5, as did Frizzle and Booted Bantams. Call Ducks sold to 5 with Aylesburys at Laying hens a consistent trade of 1-2 per head all day long, with West of England Tumblers making 2. Rabbits sold to 6 for Continental crosses with others at 3 for does and 2 for Bucks.
