2 Steers to 1380 Heifers to 1115 A tremendous show of store cattle on Friday met a ferocious New Year trade and with an average of 1011, being quite remarkable considering it took into account of all ages, breeds, sex and quality. Top priced steers hit an impressive 1380 for a pair of strong Simmental s (21m) from Robert & Janet Legg of Dunchideock with their others of a similar kind to Further forward stores out of the top drawer reached 1300 (x5) for eye catching Blue and Limousin steers (25m) from Andrew & Wendy Reed of Blackborough, Blue heifers (24m) off the same lorry fetched 1100 followed by Limousin females at 1080 again from Andrew & Wendy. More top quality cattle from Andrew Peters and family, Talaton sold well and to 1260 for a pair of Blue bullocks (26m) with their Limousin s steers (averaging 26m) fetching 1250 (x3) and a solitary Frisian steer (25m) saw Heifers from the Peters family also saw excellent returns with Charolais (23m) to 1115 and a near matching bunch of Limousin heifers (25m) attaining 1055 a head. All at Exeter were sad to see Fred & Jennifer Trott, Thorverton sell their very last cattle on Friday, although they did go out on a high with Limousin steers (20m) selling to 1220 and pairs of Charolais steers (20m) close behind at 1210 all at Kivells would like to wish them a happy retirement. Younger steers from Sally Thompson, Exwick were well sold (and valued by the seller) at 1055 for a Charolais (16m). Top priced heifers having already been reported but others well worthy of a mention include Andrew Shervington, Hittisleigh with pairs of smart Simmental s (29m) to 1100 and 1095 and Sally Thompson again, with her Charolais heifer (25m) at As with the older sorts through the store ring, youngstock looked a really strong trade on Friday with demand once again outstripping supply. A consignment of twenty three tremendous suckler bred organic cattle from Westlake Brothers of Branscombe headed the sale with Angus steers (by a pedigree sire) selling to 930 and 800, bunches of Hereford steers (10m) again by a pedigree sire an excellent price at 860 for their best pair, also a young Angus heifer off the same farm rose to 670. A single Limousin steer (8m) saw 735 for Melanie Forward of Talaton. Steve Barkwill, Milton Abbot brought his usual top quality suckler bred calves and saw a couple of very smart Blue steers (just 7m) reach 730 apiece and slightly older heifers (8m) of the same breed to 700 and 685, Steve also sold Angus heifers (9m) to CALVES 10.15AM Auctioneer: Mark Davis STORE CATTLE & STIRKS 10AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter CALVES Bulls Heifers Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE A much improved entry in numbers saw an excellent trade for British Blue the best with smaller and plainer calves easier than last week s Limousin flier. 5 Rural Reflection January 2018 Well, what a wash out the last few weeks of 2017 turned out to be! The home farm certainly had some trackways washed away and fields flooded over the festive period, which I m sure was also the case for many of you reading this too. As I write this month s Rural Reflection it looks as though more stormy weather is forecast but here s hoping for a calm and dry spell soon, particularly as many of you will now have started lambing. I begin with some very welcome news from the Rural Payments Agency in that 84% of Basic Payment Scheme payments were made before Christmas to some 71,000 farmers. For those of you who have not yet received your payment the RPA should have been in touch by or letter by the end of December to either advise that you may be paid before the end of December or that you definitely won t be paid by the end of December. For those receiving an or letter stating the latter, the RPA will be in touch again by the end of January if you have still not been paid to give more specific information on the progress of your claim. There will also no doubt be some of you who are still in the midst of trying to resolve payment queries for the 2016 or even 2015 payment years. With the RPA s current focus being to make 2017 BPS payments, the number of staff dealing with post payment adjustments has duly decreased, however we have been advised that activity on this front will increase again towards the end of January. Acting as BPS agents for numerous farming clients across the south west we are regularly in contact with the RPA and so if you have any queries regarding your payment, for either this year or previous years, please do be in touch and we will do all we can to assist. The Woodland Creation Grant application window has now opened and if you are looking to apply applications must be submitted by Friday 16 th February. These grants are worth up to 6,800 per hectare with the option to apply for ten-year annual maintenance payments as well. However, it is important to note that land that is entered into a woodland creation agreement is viewed as non-agricultural from the outset of the agreement (even if the land has not yet been planted) and therefore it becomes ineligible for the Basic Payment Scheme payment, unless it was used to claim the Single Payment Scheme payment in If you are interested in applying or would like any more information please do contact your local Kivells Rural Professional office. For those of you who applied for Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship agreements or Water Capital Grants last September, you will no doubt still be waiting to hear from Natural England as to

6 whether you will be offered an agreement or a grant for A combination of being short staffed and receiving a much higher than anticipated number of applications has led to a frustratingly slow response from Natural England. To that end, Natural England have recently advised that they are still in the process of reviewing applications and they hope to be in touch with all applicants either with an agreement offer or an update on the status of their application by the end of January, so in the meantime we continue to wait! All agreements will be back dated and will still have start dates of 1 st January 2018 despite the fact that agreement offers will not be made until after this point. We have now started our 2017/18 season of fodder sales across our auction centres with a strong trade seen for straw in particular, which will be pleasing news for the arable farmers amongst you, although not so much for those of you farming livestock and having to use the stuff! We have further sales at Exeter on 12 th January, 9 th February and 2 nd March, and at Holsworthy on 10 th January and 14 th February so if you are looking to either buy or sell please do be in touch. Until next time...
