2 Governor's Cup - Clear cut winners Quairading family Squiers and Sons had plenty of reason to celebrate at this year s Show - having won the highly-prized Governor s Cup at the IGA Perth Royal Show for the fourth time! The Cup is a testament to the two plus decades the Squiers family has been showing their SAMM and Poll Dorset sheep at the annual eight-day event that brings the country to the city. The Governor s Cup is awarded to the exhibitor with the most points in the livestock exhibits including sheep, cattle, horse, goat and alpaca and rewards both excellence and consistency while also promoting the quest for higher standards. The family-run sheep studs, Shirlee-Downs and Dongadilling, comprises Chris, wife Fay, sons Sascha and Adrian and daughters-in-law Kylie and Kelsie. It is always an honour to win the Governor s Cup, said Adrian who attributes the family s successful run of wins to breeding bigger and better sheep for the commercial market which entail length, muscle and following industry requirements. The Governor s Cup was presented by the Hon Wayne Martin AO, Administrator of the State of Western Australia, during a ceremony on Claremont Showground s Peters Drumstick Main Arena on the closing day of the 2014 IGA Perth Royal Show. 3 Volunteer of the Year - We'll drink to that! Wendy Dallywater of Southern Cross, chief steward for the Perth Royal Wine Show has been awarded the highly-prized title: Volunteer of the Year Wendy has been organising, mentoring and training about 20 stewards to deliver a professional and efficient competition for more than 27 years. She joined the volunteers in 1987, taking over the role as chief steward from her sister Robyn in Wendy, who works for the Yilgarn Shire, takes two weeks annual leave to attend the Wine Show. Councillor-in-Charge John Snowball praised Wendy for her calm demeanor in a high pressure environment and her dedication and commitment. Ms Dallywater said it was a lovely surprise and honour to receive the award. Rural Community Achiever 2014 Mark Bin Bakar of Broome carried off this year s Rural Community Achiever Award and deservedly so. Check out his achievements in the next edition of Cultivate WA. Youth Scholarships Know anyone off to university next year to embark on an undergraduate tertiary course in an agricultural related discipline? If so, you may like to let them know of a fantastic scholarship worth $12,000, to help make ends meet while undergoing further education.
4 Thanks to the Bendat Family Foundation and Kott Gunning the RAS is able to offer two $12,000 scholarships (paid over three years) to provide financial assistance to two students. Application forms and details are available on: Applications close 5 December Scholarships reap rewards Six students will be finding the financial aspect of university life slightly easier following monetary awards recently presented to them by the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia. Annually, the RAS of WA assists young people studying agricultural subjects by contributing to their tertiary costs through the Australian Council of Agricultural Societies Coca-Cola Regional Scholarships program. Each of this year s winners received $2,000 which they will use toward their studies. Jason Schutz is studying Bachelor of Agribusiness at Curtin University; Natasha Verazzi is a student at the University of Western Australia studying Bachelor of Science Agriculture; Cameron Broun, also at UWA, is studying Bachelor of Science - Agricultural Science and Chemistry. Courtney Wright and Jessica Everett are both students at Murdoch University. Courtney is studying Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery and Jessica, Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine. Georgia Reid, UWA, is studying Bachelor of Agricultural Science. Above: The Hon Wayne Martin, left and RAS President Rob Wilson right with Jason Schutz, Jessica Everett,
5 Georgia Reid, Courtney Wright, Natasha Verazzi, Cameron Broun Premium prices The IGA Perth Royal Show keeps setting the bar higher and higher... Record sale for Poll Dorset breed A national record price of $31,000 (and what is believed to be a world first) for the Poll Dorset breed was paid for a ram during the IGA Perth Royal Show s annual All Breeds Stud Ram and Ewe sale. The Hillcroft Farms Poll Dorset stud ram, owned by Agricultural Hall of Fame inductee Bradford Dawson, was bought by meat syndicate Elite Australia. Fundraising steers The charity auction of an Angus steer donated by Jamie Abbs of Landmark and prepared by Peter Milton (RAS Member), was sold to Harvey Beef and raised an outstanding $10,250 for the Black Dog Ride which raises awareness of depression and suicide. The Salers steer, prepared and donated by RAS Member Alan Penfold was sold to Borrello Beef for a fantastic $3,500. Proceeds of this sale goes to Royal Flying Doctor Service. Other steers sold for between $1,000 and $2,000. Cattle Councillor in Charge Andrew Williams was very excited about the wonderful participation and support for the auction.
