Community Engagement in the Northern Territory 2014

Introduction In 2014, INPEX and our joint venture partners celebrated the Ichthys LNG Project s 50 per cent completion milestone. Nowhere is our progress more visible than in Darwin, where construction of our onshore processing facility is well underway at Bladin Point. For INPEX, our relationship with the Northern Territory (NT) community is vitally important. We have been working in the NT since 2008, and will be a part of the community for at least the next 40 years. We are committed to identifying job and business opportunities on the Project for locals, including for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Working collaboratively with our onshore Engineering Procurement and Construction contractor, JKC Australia LNG Pty Ltd (JKC), the Project is delivering those opportunities. Of more than 4,000 people who worked on site at Bladin Point in Darwin this year, approximately 60 per cent were locals. To date, more than 550 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been engaged on the Project since construction commenced in Darwin in We work closely with stakeholders across government, industry, non-government and community sectors to provide up-to-date information about the Project, to understand the issues that are important to them and to identify how we can work more effectively with the community. Throughout the year, INPEX and JKC have undertaken a range of engagement activities to keep the community informed, particularly about Project activities on the harbour and on the roads, as well as about job and business opportunities and successes. Our aim is to minimise the impact of the Project on the Greater Darwin community and to maximise the safety of road and harbour users. The community s support, understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationships in the NT in the years ahead. Ichthys LNG Project 2014 highlights 60 per cent local employment on site at Bladin Point Dredging program completed Gas export pipeline installed in harbour First modules delivered LNG tanks concrete walls completed Jetty construction progressing The Ichthys LNG Project is a Joint Venture between INPEX group companies (the Operator), major partner Total and the Australian subsidiaries of CPC Corporation, Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Chubu Electric Power and Toho Gas. 4 Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples To date, more than 90 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees have worked on the Project. Embracing cultural diversity is a core value for INPEX. We are committed to building sustainable, mutually beneficial relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the communities in which we work. This company value is the driving force behind the INPEX Reconciliation Action Plan, which outlines INPEX s commitment to acknowledging, respecting and supporting diverse cultures and heritage and educational and employment opportunities. INPEX and the Ichthys Project have strong respect for the culture and heritage of the Larrakia people, the traditional custodians of Darwin Harbour and the Darwin region. Working with JKC, the Project has engaged more than 550 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to date, with the majority coming from the Darwin and Palmerston regions. Through the Project s traineeship and apprenticeship programs, more than 90 trainees have secured work on the Project. A total of 47 business have secured $55 million in contracts across more than 110 packages of works. A business register was established to connect Project subcontractors with eligible businesses and now has almost 100 listings. Supporting business development In 2014, INPEX, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry NT and the NT Indigenous Business Network (NTIBN) partnered together to establish the Indigenous Business Capability initiative. Through the program, INPEX is funding annual membership of the Chamber of Commerce for NTIBN members. It gives those members engaged on the Project during construction practical support to grow their business by accessing services and events provided by the Chamber, including workplace health and safety programs, training and networking opportunities.

Educational gateways INPEX was pleased to continue its partnership with the Palmerston Girls Academy in Run through Role Models and Leaders Australia, the Academy mentors and supports the girls to develop the skills they need to access further education, training and employment. The program complements their formal school education and links closely with our core values at INPEX. In June, INPEX funded uniforms for a team of students from the Academy to participate in a two-day basketball tournament in Perth, which was a reward for exemplary school attendance. INPEX also supported a three-day mentoring seminar focused on the importance of positive self-image and self-respect, and planning for the future through education, cultural enrichment and mentoring. INPEX funded uniforms for a Palmerston Girls Academy basketball team INPEX is a proud supporter of NAIDOC Week, the national event celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, heritage and achievements. INPEX again had information stands at NAIDOC week events in Darwin and Palmerston, with hundreds of people stopping to learn more about the Project. INPEX information stands at NAIDOC events in Darwin and Palmerston. Respecting culture and heritage INPEX works closely with the Larrakia Heritage Management Executive Committee to develop its plans to effectively manage and protect Larrakia heritage sites that may be found within the Project s construction area. In April, INPEX took a number of Larrakia representatives on a boat tour of Darwin Harbour to observe the Project s cultural heritage management and environmental monitoring controls in action, including vessel navigation techniques used to avoid sacred sites.

Safely sharing the harbour Darwin Harbour supports some of the Northern Territory s most important economic industries and is at the heart of many of the community s recreational activities. The 2014 Dry Season saw the Ichthys Project s work on the harbour reach its peak. A targeted series of engagement activities was undertaken with more than 40 industry, government, business and recreational association stakeholders, as well as the wider community, to ensure Darwin Harbour users were kept up to date on the Project s activities and were able to share the water safely. Activities included: Community information sessions Information signs at recreational boat ramps Fact sheets and postcards Visits to fishing and tackle shops Regular updates TV, newspaper and community bulletin updates 2014 highlights: Dredging programs completed Gas export pipeline installed in Darwin Harbour Module Offloading Facility completed Boat ramp information sign - keeping the community informed. Monadelphous Open Day. Supporting local job opportunities JKC plays a key role in maximising employment outcomes for locals, including working with its subcontractors to promote the opportunities available. In August, more than 500 people attended an information open day held by subcontractor Monadelphous at its Darwin training centre. A number of other subcontractors have held information sessions throughout the year to answer questions about job and business opportunities on site.

Investing in the community With an expected 40-year life span, the Ichthys Project will deliver economic and social benefits to the Northern Territory for many generations. INPEX understands its social responsibility to the community and strongly values the support the Territory community has given the Project. Our commitment to the community has seen nearly $11 million invested in a range of initiatives and programs delivering benefits to Territorians. Health sector boost The Ichthys Project invested $500,000 to upgrade the helipad at Royal Darwin Hospital so that helicopters, including emergency evacuations for Project workers, can land there 24 hours a day. The upgrade, which includes improved lighting and the helipad almost doubling in size, significantly expanded the hospital s critical care and trauma response capacity. The Project has signed a $45 million, six-year partnership with aeromedical charity CareFlight to provide MEDEVAC services to workers on the Project s offshore facilities. Twenty new clinical positions for nurses and doctors will be created in Northern Australia as a result of the deal, supporting CareFlight s work across the region. Partnerships in education INPEX and its Ichthys Project joint venture partners believe in investing in the future of the Northern Territory. The Project has committed $3 million toward the construction of the NT Government s new $11.4 million NT Open Education Centre (NTOEC), giving Territory students in remote areas access to state of the art distance learning facilities. Design plans for the centre were unveiled this year. The contribution to the NTOEC builds on investments of $3 million each toward the North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas and the Larrakia Trade Training Centre. The Project has contributed funding towards Charles Darwin University s North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas.

Supporting our community INPEX is a proud supporter of the Northern Territory Thunder Football Club. In 2014, the Project held information stands at seven community events. The Project is a long-standing supporter of the Darwin Harbour Clean-up Day. Project personnel volunteering time at the Henbury School. INPEX and the Project invested more than $400,000 in community sponsorships in 2014 across areas including education and training, environment, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander initiatives and community support. INPEX was again a major sponsor of the Northern Territory Thunder football club in NT Thunder aims to inspire education, health and employment outcomes in local communities through sport. INPEX and the Project, including JKC, proudly supported a range of community events in 2014, including the Australia Day Fun Run, Freds Pass Rural Show, the Royal Darwin Show, Darwin Festival, the Skills, Employment and Careers Expo, and the Palmerston Festival. Hundreds of people visited the INPEX stand at the Royal Darwin Show to find out more about the Project and to enquire about job opportunities. INPEX also supported the construction of a new BMX and skate park in Howard Springs, which was completed by a local building company. Giving back to the community One of the ways INPEX and the Ichthys Project support the local community is through volunteering efforts. This year, a team of 40 personnel offered 250 hours of their time and labour as a major auction prize at the annual Starlight Children s Foundation Star Ball in Darwin. Their skills were put to good use to help transform facilities at the Henbury School, for students with disabilities. For the fourth year running, the Project sponsored the annual Darwin Harbour Clean-up Day. A small team from the Project also joined the volunteers in clearing three tonnes of rubbish from the harbour.
