2 Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre THE BUILDERS CHOICE Westfield Carousel is a place of discovery, which is set to continue as more retailers progressively open, connecting our customers with high-quality and memorable retail experiences as well as offering a vibrant dining, leisure and entertainment precinct to be enjoyed with friends and family Revamp for WA s biggest shopping centre The recent redevelopment of the largest shopping centre in Western Australia was a massive undertaking demanding project management of the highest order, meticulously planned logistics and a highly organised approach from all involved. S uch an approach was required not only because of the size of the project but also because the Westfield Carousel shopping centre in Cannington was active throughout the whole of the redevelopment. This meant that new and old sections of the centre needed to coexist and public safety had to be the highest priority. Ambient upgrades were also undertaken at night to the shopping centre to ensure areas were safe for centre operations during the day. And, despite the size and complexity of the project, not one day of trade was lost during the whole of the centre s revamp. Location and weather challenges The development was surrounded by an active trading centre and the Albany Highway, one of Perth s busiest arteries. Bounded by Liege Street, Albany Highway and the existing shopping centre, the site had four construction access points. The weather created another challenge as there was a high level of rainfall during the bulk of the excavation and structure work. This necessitated good planning and organisation by the site team to ensure the site was made watertight for finishing trades. December 2018 The Builders Choice Magazine 29

3 THE BUILDERS CHOICE Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre The logistics are impressive: throughout the development period there was 48,000m2 of demolition, formwork of 54,433m2, 18,000m3 of concrete was poured, 950t of steel was used and 16,000 plants were installed, all within a period of 18 months. $350m project The $350m project increased the Carousel shopping centre by 27,500sqm, bringing it to a total area of 110,000sqm with some 330 retailers across fashion, lifestyle, dining and entertainment. The expansion commenced in February 2017 and, not surprisingly, the works undertaken were many and varied: Utility services upgrade Demolition of 28 existing tenancies and the existing car park along Albany Highway New 3 level carparks (722 car bays) Albany Highway bus lane and services upgrade two new loading docks More than 100 new shops and a new mall A new Entertainment Lifestyle Precinct The David Jones Entry above: Frameless Doors are 4m high and a weight of 470kg! The redevelopment is a one-of-a-kind retail, dining and entertainment destination. The introduction of David Jones anchors a new fashion mall that is home to 70 new stores, a multi-deck carpark, an open-air lifestyle and leisure precinct, a fully refurbished 14-screen Hoyts cinema, and over 20 new restaurants providing an international dining offering for the local community. Many new features Other notable features of the project include the Oculus water feature and two major skylights which allow light into the new mall, polished stone floors, an Electronic Lifestyle Precinct (ELP), a feature ceiling, increased car parking which includes a multi-deck car park and valet parking.
