3 3 a history of leadership Caribbean-Central American Action is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose membership comprises private sector representatives from the U.S., the Caribbean Basin, and beyond (see the full list on pages 6-7). It is the only organization based in Washington, D.C. whose mandate is solely focused on the issues impacting the business community investing and operating in the region. CCAA was established to promote private-sector led economic development in the Caribbean and Central America, and for over forty years, CCAA has been the constant advocate for dialogue on the region s economic needs and private sector priorities. In the broader context of the Americas, the countries of the Caribbean Basin represent a small percentage of the population and the economy individually, but as a region it is one of the United States major trading partners. CCAA focuses on advancing a regional agenda by collaborating with its members as well as private and public organizations around the world. Its advocacy responds to and reflects a constituency, and because CCAA is neither single issue nor single country-focused, it is able to promote trade investment in all sectors that can contribute to a responsible and secure region. It is the only organization based in Washington, D.C., whose mandate is solely focused on the issues impacting the business community investing and operating in the countries of the Caribbean Basin. The organization accomplishes its efforts to bridge the public and private sector by maintaining working relationships with critical stakeholders throughout North America and the Caribbean Basin. The list includes, but is not limited to, the U.S. Government (including the Administration and Congress), regional governments and agencies, multilateral institutions engaged in policy or finance within the inter-american system, and private sector organizations that operate on a national or regional level. CCAA also partners on an ongoing or temporary basis with organizations around the world that share the mandate of promoting stable and prosperous economies in the Americas. CCAA s programming is determined by its members and stakeholders. It is most recognized for hosting the Annual Conference on the Caribbean and Central America, the premier forum for promoting regional investment and fostering economic initiatives in the Caribbean Basin. This Conference has long been known as the setting where policy can be made and where business is done. 4 4 Notable accomplishments In the 1970 s and 1980 s, CCAA laid the groundwork for the creation of private sector organizations throughout the region. These include many that still exist today. CCAA was the leading organization in the work to get the Caribbean Basin Initiative passed in the 1980 s and the follow-up CBTPA. CCAA was fully involved in the efforts to pass NAFTA and CAFTA- DR. CCAA was the leading organization to advocate for the importance of the protecting jobs during the embargo against Haiti. CCAA was at the forefront of the port security work in the Caribbean as new rules for trade were implemented in the early 2000 s. CCAA was one of the first organizations to focus on regional energy security, and still plays an important role in this issue. Most recently in March 2015, CCAA partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Government of the US. Virgin Islands to host the Caribbean Clean Energy Technology Symposiums. CCAA has helped establish private-public sector management and business continuity efforts through its Disaster Management Workshop Series. CCAA s Annual Conference has long been recognized as a forum where companies can make contacts, identify project financing, and create real business opportunities will mark CCAA s 40 th Annual Conference. As the Western Hemisphere deals with the challenging issues of trade, energy, finance, security and development, it is important that the challenges and opportunities in the Caribbean Basin are articulated by all who have a stake in its economic growth. CCAA is governed by an international Board of Trustees and by contributions from its members. Our Trustees and Members play an important role in our activities, and contribute actively to CCAA s efforts in the region. As a member, you will be able to participate in the development and implementation of our annual programs, ongoing regional conferences, Washington DC events, and at the Annual Conference on the Caribbean and Central America. As a member of CCAA, you will be notified of all CCAA activities and events and will be invited to attend our semi-annual Board meetings, where CCAA plays host to keynote speakers active in senior-level Regional and US policy discussions on the Caribbean and Central America, providing an insider s view of policy decisions affecting the region. In addition, you will receive complimentary copies of our yearly publication, the Caribbean-Central America Profile, which provides summary analysis of the countries of the Basin, and lists businesses and associations currently operating in the region, providing valuable contact information useful to anyone interested in conducting business with the countries in the Caribbean and Central America. 10 10 A 40-year legacy In the fall of 2016, CCAA will host the 40 th edition of its Annual Conference on the Caribbean & Central America. Over the years, the Conference been also known as the Miami Conference, the Conference on the Caribbean Basin, and others. The core of the program has always focused on bringing together senior public and private sector leaders to discuss trade, economic and policy issues as a means to encouraging understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the region. The event continues to be the only annual forum that focuses solely on the economies of the Caribbean and Central America. It has helped shape policy and influence trade and investment through a format that features policy and business leaders in keynote addresses, plenary discussions, and interactive roundtables. Subject areas include CCAA s focus issues to ensure that there is continuity of programming throughout the year. This way CCAA maintains its role as a voice for the region on the topics that dominate the countries economic agendas. how members get involved: CCAA works actively with its Board members to collaborate on all programs and events. This includes defining session topics, identifying invitees, speakers, etc. Members are also offered high-profile speaking roles at various events, exclusive networking opportunities with government representatives and other executives, and more.
