3 3 A History of Leadership Caribbean-Central American Action is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose membership comprises private sector representatives from the U.S., the Caribbean Basin, and beyond. Established to promote private-sector led economic development in the Caribbean and Central America, for over forty years, CCAA has been the constant advocate for dialogue on the region s economic needs and private sector priorities. In the broader context of the Americas, the countries of the Caribbean Basin represent a small percentage of the population and the economy individually, but as a region it is one of the United States major trading partners. CCAA focuses on advancing a regional agenda by collaborating with its members as well as private and public organizations around the world. Its advocacy responds to and reflects a constituency, and because CCAA is neither single issue nor single country-focused, it is able to promote trade investment in all sectors that can contribute to a responsible and secure region. It is the only organization based in Washington, D.C., whose mandate is solely focused on the issues impacting the business community investing and operating in the countries of the Caribbean Basin. The organization accomplishes its efforts to bridge the public and private sector by maintaining working relationships with critical stakeholders throughout North America and the Caribbean Basin. The list includes, but is not limited to, the U.S. Government (including the Administration and Congress), regional governments and agencies, multilateral institutions engaged in policy or finance within the inter-american system, and private sector organizations that operate on a national or regional level. CCAA also partners on an ongoing or temporary basis with organizations around the world that share the mandate of promoting stable and prosperous economies in the Americas. For four decades CCAA has been the convening organization for the Annual Conference on the Caribbean and Central America. This event continues to be the only annual forum that focuses solely on the policy and business issues impacting the economies of the Caribbean and Central America, and has long been the setting for some of the most pivotal discussions on the region. It has helped shape policy and influence trade and investment through a format that features policy and business leaders in keynote addresses, plenary discussions, and interactive roundtables. Subject areas always include CCAA s program issues to ensure that there is continuity of programming throughout the year. In this way, CCAA maintains its role as a voice for the region on the topics that dominate the countries economic agendas. The 41 st Annual Conference will be held in the fall of For more information, please visit or contact CCAA at (202) CCAA Membership Package
4 Events and Conferences CCAA holds regular forums and meetings throughout the year. Among some of the high-profile events hosted by CCAA in 2016, were events on Disaster and Resilience, Washington meetings with Congress and the Administration, Finance, FinTech, and the Future of Banking in the Caribbean Basin, and our Annual Conference on the Caribbean and Central America. Disaster Management Workshop Series: One of CCAA s most requested events, this partnership with Tropical Shipping is a series of one-day workshops in select islands throughout the Caribbean. In 2016 the Workshop was held in the Bahamas, Dominica, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks and Caicos, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The line-up for 2017 will be announced early in the New Year. CCAA Spring Board Meeting: In June, 2016, CCAA s Board meeting incorporated a number of Washington activities that put a spotlight on regional issues. In addition to the business meeting of the Board, a private discussion was held at the U.S. State Department, and a standing-room-only public event was held on Capitol Hill in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank. Six members of Congress, from both sides of the aisle, gave remarks over the course of the morning program. Finance, FinTech, and the Future of Banking in the Caribbean Basin was another collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank, and brought together financial sector and technology experts, Ministers of Finance, Central Bank Governors, and other stakeholders for two days of discussions on the correspondent banking industry and emerging solutions. Two highlights from the forum included the participation of the Prime Minister of St. Lucia, Allen Chastanet, and a closed meeting with the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Jacob Jack Lew. In the fall of 2016, CCAA hosted the 40 th edition of the Annual Conference on the Caribbean & Central America. The core of the program has always focused on bringing together senior public and private sector leaders to discuss trade, economic and policy issues to encourage understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the region. In 2016, some of the program highlights included: A collaboration with the Americas Business Dialogue (an IDB program) on regional Trade Facilitation (including a site visit to PortMiami, keynote presentations by Representative Eliot Engel and Representative Stacey Plaskett, as well as a closed meeting with the Representatives with CCAA trustees and members of the regional diplomatic corps, and a special Business Leaders Forum at United States Southern Command.
