2 REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A WOMEN IN MARITIME ASSOCIATION, CARIBBEAN Page 2 The Women in Maritime Association, Caribbean New ground was broken when, at the conclusion of an intensive 5-day conference, the Women in Maritime Association Caribbean (WiMAC) was formed. Conducted under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the conference was held at the Holiday Inn Sunspree in Montego Bay, Jamaica, from th April THE WOMEN IN MARITIME ASSOCIATION, CARIBBEAN, WILL JOIN THE EXISTING REGIONAL GROUPS IN FURTHERING THE OBJECTIVES OF IMO S 1988 STRATEGY, WHILE PROMOTING THE CONTINUED EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF WOMEN IN THE MARITIME SECTOR
3 REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A WOMEN IN MARITIME ASSOCIATION, CARIBBEAN Page 3 Mrs. Sharon Folkes- Abraham, Minister of State Ministry of Industry, Investment & Commerce, Jamaica The conference commenced with an official opening, which included a Parade of National Flags, and addresses and remarks delivered by several high ranking Female Government officials - including Mrs. Sharon Folkes-Abraham, Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment & Commerce; Mrs. Audrey Sewell, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Works & Housing. Senator the Honorable Sandrea Falconer, Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, delivered the keynote Conference Kick-off address. The conference was presided over by IMO s Senior Deputy Director, Mrs. Pamela Tansey, who also addressed the delegates at the opening. Rear Admiral Peter Brady - Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, and a lead advocate for the initiative, was the Master of Ceremonies and remained at the conference as an observer. 4 Page 4 Plenary & Presentations Presentations were also delivered by accomplished women in Maritime, including former President of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) Mrs Corah-Ann Robertson Sylvester, and former Deputy Director of the Maritime Services Division in Trinidad; and now Ag. Caribbean Regional Director and Programme Manager for the Commonwealth Secretariat, Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP), Ms. Dwynette Eversley, who spoke on Perspectives On The Establishment Of A Code Of Good Practice For Gender Mainstreaming In The Maritime Sector. Mrs. Antonette Wemyss Gorman, the first seagoing female to serve in the Jamaica Defense Force, and the first female to attain the rank of Commander, spoke on Breaking Barriers: Experiences in the Jamaica Coast Guard. Claudia Mrs. Corah-Ann Robertson Sylvester, former President of the Caribbean Shipping Association Ms. Dwynette Eversley, former Deputy Director of the Maritime Services Division in Trinidad; and now Ag. Caribbean Regional Director and Programme Manager for the Commonwealth Secretariat, Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP), during her presentation. Grant, Deputy Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, and Vivette Grant, Deputy Director of the Caribbean Maritime Institute delivered their groundbreaking paper titled Women in the Maritime Sector: Surviving and Thriving in a Man's World, which had been presented at an international women's conference at the IMO, and which served as impetus for the 5-day conference and subsequent formation of WiMAC. All participating countries made presentations detailing Status of the Contribution of Women to the Maritime Sector in their respective Maritime Industries. 5 REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A WOMEN IN MARITIME ASSOCIATION, CARIBBEAN Page 5 Caribbean Women in Maritime Countries represented at the conference were Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad s delegation was lead by Mrs Verna Johnson, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, and comprised the Director Maritime Services Ms Beverly Phillip, Marine Pilot Ann-Marie Chapman, Consultant and former Deputy Director MSD, current and now Ag. Caribbean Regional Director and Programme Manager for the Commonwealth Secretariat, Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Ms Dwynette Eversley, and SATT s General Manager E. Joanne Edwards. 6 Page 6 Background to the Conference Managers in the maritime Recognizing the need sector of Eastern and for focused attention to Southern Africa issues of women s development (WOMESA);The Arab and well-being in International Women s the sector, the International Maritime Forum for Maritime Organiza- tion (IMO) in 1997 established the Women in Maritime MENA and Africa; The Pacific Women Association (PacWIMA); The Association Programme for the for Women Integration of Women in Managers in the Maritime the Maritime Sector. This Sector, Asia (WIMAfollowed IMO s 1988 Asia);The Network for Strategy on the Integration of Women in the Maritime Sector (IWMS), which was introduced as a comprehensive policy to broaden Professional Women in the Maritime Port Sectors of West and Central Africa; and The Forum for Women Managers in the the capabilities of women Maritime Sector, Latin in the maritime sector. America. Since then, the IMO has successfully pioneered the establishment of several regional groups and support networks to further the objectives of capacity building for women in the Functioning alongside the regional networks are also national chapters which have been actively pursuing and promoting the objectives of the IMO s 1988 Strategy on the Integration sector, these being: The of Women in the Maritime Association of Women Sector (IWMS). These include the Papua New Guinea Women in Maritime Association (PNGWIMA) and the Women in Maritime, Philippines Association (WIMAPHIL). The IMO also played a major role in the establishment of a women s association at the institutional level; the World Maritime University Women s Association (WMUWA) in 2014, an association which seeks to forge connections and build capacity for women in the maritime sector, while creating a strong foundation for growth and gradual integration into the aforementioned established regional groups.
7 Page 7 WiMAC is formed The Women in Maritime, Caribbean (WiMAC), will join the existing regional groups in furthering the objectives of IMO s 1988 strategy, while promoting the continued education and training of women in the maritime sector, advocating for gender equality, promoting the protection of the marine environment and the safe, secure and efficient shipping and port operations; and connecting national, regional and international organizations with similar objectives.
