It is always a bigger than life event and one to be witnessed. Robbery Crime Sprees foiled by days and night watches! On 1/23/09 at 10:40 AM a woman stopped her car to use the ATM on the 700 block of Beach Street when she was approached by two black males in their early 20 s. One of the men was armed with a handgun. He ordered the woman to hand over her wallet and car at gun point. The woman complied and quickly told her partner who was working nearby. The boyfriend told her to call 911 as he gave chase with his two dogs in pursuit of the suspect who now fled on foot. Several Day Watch Officers, including Fisherman s Wharf Beat Officer Noel DeLeon, Wagon Officers Terry Laubach and Benny Chin and School Resource Officer Steve Matthias coordinated their response to capture both suspects. The gun was found to be a replica and was located abandoned on the seat of the victim s vehicle. Evidence was still found in the pockets of one of the men and both were booked for Robbery. On 1/24/09 from Midnight to 2 AM, several suspects from Antioch, Richmond and San Pablo went on a robbery spree around Russian Hill and Nob Hill, totaling at least five incidents. The suspects and vehicle was described to officers in the field. At least one handgun was described by victims. In at least one case, the victim was struck in the head with the gun. Alert Night Watch Officers Jeremy Cummings and Charles August responded to the Highway on ramp near 5th Street and waited to see if the getaway car would travel in the direction of the Bay Bridge. Their intuition paid off when they observed the vehicle approach just after 2 AM. Several Officers responded after the vehicle resisted initial efforts to stop them. The vehicle was stopped and 5 suspects were detained near Treasure Island on the Bay Bridge. A thorough investigation yielded property, evidence, cash, clothing, and a vehicle. Several victims from the five robberies responded and identified the suspects as the same ones who robbed them earlier. On 1/26/09 at Jackson and Grant, several officers were on hand to monitor fireworks to celebrate the actual Chinese New Year s Day. Officers responded to a call of a male brandishing a handgun in the crowd. Sgt. Joe Fischer and Night Watch Officers Christopher Ritter, Jeremy Cummings, Brandon Thompson, Thomas McWilliams, Tina To and Matt Sullivan maneuvered through the heavy crowd and surrounded young men and the reported suspects. The officers used tactics to minimize a 1

2 violent response and took several detainees from the crowd without incident. In the end, two Asian male suspects were booked for possession of a loaded and concealed 9MM handgun. On 1/24/09 at 1:44 PM Officer Dante Giovanelli saw a loud commotion at a wine bar inside the Embarcadero Center. Officer saw the transient male suspect fleeing with two laptop computers that he just stole from the bar. After a short chase and resistance, Officer Giovanelli took the suspect into custody. Transporting Officer Al Ciudad noticed that the suspect matched the description of a suspect who Burglarized and Robbed a store on Drumm Street. The Robbery Detail confirmed the suspect matched the suspect seen in surveillance videos. Current Crime Trends Graffiti vandals have scarred North Beach and Chinatown of late. Please call 911 if you see acts of graffiti or other vandalism in progress. Use 311 to report the mess to get it cleaned up asap. There is a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of graffiti vandals of up to $250. Portable toilets have been the target of arson vandals, especially on the Russian Hill border between the Central and Northern Districts. Most have occurred after midnight and before 6 AM. Strategies have been employed by both districts as well as the Arson Task Force of SFPD and SFFD Inspectors. Be aware of individuals carrying newspapers, cardboard or other materials. Help prevent this from occurring by bringing in newspapers, phonebooks and flammable recyclables until the morning of pick up. Please call 911 if you see anyone loitering near these structures after midnight. The activity only takes minutes to carry out and an immediate response is imperative to catching this dangerous individual. Lost & Found: Officers responded to the 900 block of Stockton on 1/20/09 at 9 PM to receive a black backpack that was apparently abandoned. The officers opened it and discovered 20- one gallon baggies with suspected marijuana inside. The owner(s) of the property should come by Central Station to claim the backpack. I suggest you bring an overnight bag as well. 3 Crimes of Note: at 11:10 PM, 400 block of Montgomery Street. Officer Thomas Cunnane responded to a report of a known mentally disabled male yelling obscenities against Israel near their consulate. When the suspect was approached by the officer he reacted violently, spitting and physically threatening the officer. Ultimately, he was subdued and arrested for terrorist threats, resisting arrest and being under the influence (alcohol) in public at 1:45 AM, 400 block of Broadway Street. Officers Minh Du, Del Gandio, and, O Brien were on patrol in the area when they observed the male victim walking on the street bleeding from a head wound. The victim stated that he was hit with a bottle for no apparent reason but was unable to identify the suspects at 6:05 PM, Green and Powell Streets. Officer Milan Kangraga and other officers answered a call of a loud disturbance. The argument was between a male cab driver and a male parking-valet employee. The cab driver claimed that he was trying to discharge his passenger at a near club when the valet yelled that he could not be in the valet area blocking it and ultimately blocking the valet parking operation. A verbal fight ensued with the valet suspect kicking the cab causing a dent in the vehicle. The suspect was cited for battery and vandalism to a vehicle at 1:15 AM, Larkin and Geary Streets. Officers Jeremy Cummings and Martin Garay responded to a call of a robbery. Upon arriving at the scene, they met and interviewed the male victim who advised them that he was standing near the street intersection when female and male suspects approached him, grabbing him, and turning him while snatching his wallet, which contained $150 dollars, and his driver s license then fled at 6:39 PM, Union Square. Officers Steven Gomez and Paul Doherty were sent to the area on a call of a burglary. Upon appearing at the scene they were assisted by Officer Lopez and Sgt. May who were in pursuit of the identified five suspects; Officer Gomez was able to stop a fleeing suspect with a bar-arm take down while two other suspects were also caught with bags containing stolen clothing. They were arrested and booked

4 at 1:40 AM, Pine and Leavenworth Streets. Officers Thomas McWilliams and Brandon Thompson were dispatched on a report of a robbery and carjacking. Upon coming on the scene, the male victim, a cab driver, stated that the suspect was a passenger who grabbed him in a chokehold holding a steel object claiming to have a gun and demanded his money. The suspect then took the money and ordered the driver out of the cab then fled in the cab. The stolen cab was ultimately located near Larkin and Polk streets at 12:53 AM, Montgomery and Pacific Streets. Officers Brandon Thompson and Thomas McWilliams responded to a report of a purse snatching. The officers encountered the victim who stated that as she exited a restaurant the suspect ran by her and snatched her purse, which contained credit cards, currency, and personal identification Check out the website for rewards for Homicide information, Graffiti information and when giving tips on illegal guns in San Francisco. Join the SFPD: The Community Police Academy is a 15-week program that meets once a week and is designed to inform and teach interested participants various aspects of municipal policing, including patrol and investigations procedures, vehicle operations, arrest and control techniques, firearm procedures and emergency communications. The Academy s goals are to develop community awareness through education and to develop a closer understanding and working relationship between the San Francisco Police Department and its communities. Members of the community are encouraged to join and learn about the San Francisco Police Department. Participants can ask questions and offer comments within each class.
