Hope to see you there Friends of the Urban Forest Street Tree Planting In the Bayview District, Saturday, December 11th, 2009! Trees, which usually cost about $400 to plant, are currently only $75 for residential and commercial property owners in Bayview. Thank you so much for your interest in increasing our city s canopy. Planting trees helps your neighborhood as they slow down traffic, filter harmful particulates from the air, mitigate storm water overflows and enhance property values! You can strengthen your community by sending in your tree planting applications and asking residents on your block to do the same. If you have already sent in your applications great! If not, the deadline for forms is November 5th. On planting day we end up planting 30 to 50 trees! If you join this planting, the trees are practically FREE! If you need financial assistance to plant a tree, contact FUF about special programs. 1

Officers arrived on scene and saw a victim, lying on the ground, not breathing. Medics responded and pronounced death shortly after. Numerous other officers from Bayview Station responded to the scene to assist. Inspectors from the Homicide Division responded to the scene and took over the investigation. ARRESTS OF INTEREST: 2

3 October 1, 2009-Attempted Robbery w/force, Probation Violation-5:52pm3rd/LaSalle-CN# : Bike Patrol Officers Gillies and Singh responded to a call regarding a stabbing. Officers spoke with the victim, who stated that he was punched by an unknown suspect who demanded all his stuff. The suspect also told the victim that he was going to rob him every time he saw him. The victim took a stand and defended himself, causing the suspect to run down the street without the victim s belongings. The victim suffered a cut to his face from the punch by the suspect. Officers located the suspect, who was positively identified by the victim and taken into custody. October 1, 2009-Aggravated Assault w/weapon-5:57pm-3rd/quesadacn# : Officers Cheng and Chiang responded to a call of a person with a knife. Further information from headquarters revealed that the incident was actually a person that had been sprayed with pepper spray. Officers spoke to the victim who confirmed the attack and stated that they were parked on the street when they saw suspects that had robbed them on a prior occasion. The victim overheard one suspect say to another, isn t that the girl we jumped? The victim, fearing for her and her children s safety got back in the car, just as the suspects ran over and attempted to pepper spray the victims. The victim was able to call for police and able to shut the car door before most of the pepper spray got into the car. The suspects fled the area. Officers responding to the scene located one of the suspects hiding behind a fence. Officers searched the suspect and found the can of pepper spray used in the attack. The victim also positively indentified the suspect. The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to Bayview Station for booking. October 30, 2009-Carjacking w/force, Evading Police, Resisting Police10:05pm-800 blk of Terry Francois-CN# : 3

4 Officers Fong and Borghesani responded to a call regarding an assault and carjacking. Officers met with the victims, who stated that they had parked their truck on the street, and were approached by five unknown suspects. One of the suspects asked one of the victims for a cigarette. The victim told the suspect that he did not have one. Another suspect then walked up to the victim and punched him in the face several times, took the victim s wallet and the victim s truck. Another subject robbed the other victim and took his cell phone, beanie, and money. Officers located the suspect with the stolen vehicle and a chase ensued into Oakland, where Oakland Police had to use a tazer gun on the suspect, who was resisting arrest. The suspect was taken to the hospital, where the victims positively identified him. The victims were not injured during the incident. Incidents of interest: November 1, 2009-Aggravated Assault w/gun-10:54pmdormitory/kirkwood-cn# : Officers Kavanagh and Rodriguez responded to a call regarding a victim who had been shot in the hand. Officers located the victim who told officers that he was walking down the street, heard numerous gunshots, and ran to his house. Once home, the victim discovered that he had been shot. The victim was very uncooperative with the officers and refused to answer any other questions regarding the incident. The victim was transported to SFGH, where he was treated and released. Officers did not locate any suspects. October 28, 2009-Robbery, w/force-3:50pm-4000 blk of 3rd stcn# : 4

5 Members of the housing team responded to a call regarding a robbery. Officers met with the victim, who stated that she had just been robbed by three unknown suspects. The victim further stated that she was outside of a store on 3rd Street when one of the three suspects approached her and attempted to take money from the victim. The victim held onto the money and was punched in the face and pushed to the ground. The suspect was then able to take the money from the victim. The victim was not injured during the robbery. Officers searched the area, to no avail. The victim was given a ride home by officers. Officers searched the area and located the car with the subjects inside. Officers detained the subjects and searched the car, with negative results for any weapons. The subject driving the car was detained due to having been identified by the witness and having no driver s license. As officers were preparing the car to be towed, headquarters advised them that the car had just 9

10 been reported stolen. The suspect driver was placed into custody for the stolen vehicle. The passenger was cited and released to her parent. November 3, 2009-Warrant Arrest-6:05pm-LeConte/Meade-CN# : Officer Shablinskiy and Field Training Officer Borgen responded to a call regarding a fight. Officers on scene had detained an individual who was deemed the suspect. Officers ran the suspect s name through the system and discovered an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to Bayview Station for booking. November 3, 2009-Aggravated Assault w/knife, Warrant Arrest-12:52am2400 blk of San Bruno Ave-CN# : Officers Fong and Talusan responded to a call regarding a person with a knife at a local night club. Officers on the scene located the suspect, who the club security had already handcuffed. Witnesses pointed out the victim, who had a large wound on his back caused by the suspect slicing him with a knife. Officers immediately called for a medic to respond and transport the victim to the hospital. Another witness told officers where the knife was located, which the officers recovered as evidence. Officers took custody of the suspect, who was positively identified by the victim. Inspectors from the General Work Unit responded and took over the investigation. The suspect was booked at Bayview Station. Incidents of interest: November 2, 2009-Robbery w/force-9:45am-kieth/revere-cn# : Officer Shablinskiy and Field Training Officer Borgen responded to Bayview Station regarding a report of a robbery. Officers met with the victim who stated that he was walking home when he was approached by three suspects at the 10

11 intersection of Kieth and Revere. The victim stated one of the suspects punched him in the face, causing the victim to fall to the ground. Another suspect then took money out of the victim s pocket. All three suspects fled the area on foot after the robbery. The victim was not seriously injured. Officers searched the area for the suspects, to no avail. November 2, 2009-Aggravated Assault w/other weapon-4:35pm-3rd/23rdcn# : Officers Skaug and Chiang responded to a fight in front of a SFFD station in the Bayview District. Officers arrived and located a victim who had been assaulted and who had a cut on his head. A medic, on scene, treated the victim. The victim further stated that he had been driving on 3rd St when he passed a group of young adults standing on the MUNI platform. As the victim passed the group, one of them threw a can of soda at him, which hit the victim in the head. The victim then drove to the SFFD, where he works and called for police. BURGLARIES: NO ARREST: October 31, pm-600 blk of Connecticut-CN# : Entry made through an unlocked garage door. 14 November 6, 2009 Captain s Message: On November 14, I will be transferred to the Investigations Bureau and Captain Greg Suhr will assume command of Bayview Station. Greg is experienced and knowledgeable, and we have met to discuss issues affecting the district. He is one of the finest officers in our department and I m confident that you will enjoy working with him. I leave the Bayview after nearly two years, and it has been a wonderful experience. It has been an honor to work with the fine men and women here at Bayview Station, and a pleasure to serve this thriving community. Working together, we have had significant success in reducing violent crime and improving the quality of life here in the district. I want to thank each of you for your support and assistance over the past two years, and I wish you all the best in the future. 15 Dear Community Members, My name is Kristina Silva and I am the Outreach and After School Director at Bethel Grace Lutheran Ministries here in the Portola District. I'm excited to tell you about a one-day children's camp happening on Veterans Day, November 11, when the children are off of school. We will be hosting the camp from 9:00am-5:00. The cost is $30 and includes lunch and two snacks, holiday arts and crafts, preparing care packages for soldiers, music time, story time, and games. Numerous units including FRET and GTF responded as well. Officers Ferraez, of the Housing Unit, located the suspect who was entering a vehicle. Officers searched the suspect and the car 16

17 and located items of evidence which led them to investigate further. Officers responded to the suspects place of residence and searched it, locating additional evidence and a firearm. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Bayview Station for booking and for further investigation by members of GANG TASK FORCE. November 4, 2009-Robbery w/force, Battery with injuries-1:30pmpaul/carr-cn# : Officers Oropeza and Lee responded to 3rd/Paul regarding a robbery. Officers spoke to a witness who saw the suspect choke the victim from the back while taking items out of the victim s pockets. The witness stated that after the robbery, the suspect ran down the street. Officers then met with the victim who stated that he was walking on Paul when an unknown suspect walked up to the victim and asked him the following: what you got? and do you have a phone? The victim told the suspect no. It was at this time that the suspect got behind the victim and began to choke him. The suspect took the victim s hand held video games and then took off running. Officer Kerlegan spotted the suspect and detained him, locating the victim s property. The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to Bayview Station for further investigation and booking. A medic responded to the victim s location and treated him. November 4, 2009-Possession of Cocaine for sale, Possession of Marijuana for sale-6:40pm-2000 blk of Palou-CN# : Members of Bayview s plainclothes team were in the area of Palou serving a search warrant. Officers made entry into the premise and located numerous suspects and suspected narcotics in the house. Officers also found large sums of money and paraphernalia. Two of the subjects in the house were placed 17

18 under arrest and transported to Bayview Station for booking and for further investigation. Incidents of interest: November 4, 2009-Robbery w/other weapon-3:49pm-oakdale/mendellcn# : Officer Gilles responded to the 1400 blk of Oakdale regarding a robbery. Officer met with and spoke to the victim who stated that he was standing at the intersection of Mendell and Oakdale when a known suspect walked up to him and said, gimme your phone.. The victim ignored the suspect s demands and watched as the suspect pulled out a set of brass knuckles, put them on his hand and threaten to hit the victim. The suspect then grabbed the phone with his other hand and fled on foot. The victim was not injured during the incident and the suspect was not located. November 3, 2009-Robbery w/force-1am-silver/topeka-cn# : Police Service Aid, Mellett, took a report from a victim who stated that he was robbed of his Trumpet, Flugel Horn, laptop and shaving clippers by two unknown suspects. The victim further explained that he was walking down Silver when two unknown suspects jumped out in front of him. One of the suspects punched him in the eye and grabbed his shoulder bag containing his belongings. The suspects ran off. The victim refused medical and stated he was not seriously injured. No suspects were located. October 31, 2009-Burglary, Unlawful Entry-800 blk of SilverCN# : Entry made through an open rear door of a school. Loss was a camera. Vehicle incidents: 18
