1 1 Central Station Newsletter San Francisco Police Depar t ment Inside this issue: Captain s Message 1-2 Captain Paul Yep s Message Happy Halloween! Tuesday, October 31, 2017 Officer of the Month 3 Definition of Suspicious Activity Definition of Community Policing 4 5 Weekly Crime Update 6-11 Press Releases/Events/ Info Career Opportunities 20 Resource Information As you all know, the Central District has been challenged with an increase in auto burglary. But there are ways you can help. Typically speaking when we see an auto burglary, it occurs very quickly. The suspect(s) will approach a car, quickly look inside, smash the window, reach in, and steal your valuables. Auto Burglary suspects will use flashlights or lights on their mobile devices to illuminate the inside of vehicles at night. Auto Burglary suspects will stand by a vehicle they have interest in breaking into for periods of time, waiting to clear the area of possible witnesses. Preventive measures: Do not leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. Do not leave backpacks, purses, or bags of any type in in your vehicle. (Thieves will break into your vehicle on the chance there is something valuable in the bag.) Do not leave power cords sticking out of your center console. It gives the impression you have a phone or device charging in there. If you must leave something in your vehicle, try hiding it out of sight, or in the middle of the vehicle so a possible thief would have to open the vehicle door to get to the item. This will set off alarm or they may leave a fingerprint on the vehicle door. Continues on page 2 Captain Paul Yep Commanding Officer Central Station Next Community Meeting: Thurs. Nov. 16, :00p.m.-7:00p.m. Grace Cathedral 1100 California Street Thank you for subscribing to our Newsletter! Please follow us on Chief William Scott s message sanfranciscopolice.org/ chief-police

2 2 Page 2 Continued from page 1 Look out for one another. Tell those tourists you see at Lombard and Leavenworth who are going to take a few snapshots of Lombard St that all of their luggage could be stolen if left unattended. If you witness an auto burglary, try to get the license plate of the suspect vehicle, and if possible and safe to do so, take photo or video using your personal mobile device. Finally, Don t second guess yourself, if a person or vehicle seems out of place, call the police. It s worth the call. Your help is invaluable to us.

3 3 Page 3 Each month features one of its officers in an effort to learn more about the men and women who police our neighborhood. This month, we interviewed Officer Robert Glenn, a 1-year member of. 4 4 Page 4 Definition of Suspicious Activity Suspicious activity is any observed behavior that could indicate a crime-related incident has been committed, or about to be committed. Unusual items or situations: A vehicle is parked in an odd location, a package/luggage is unattended, a window/door is open that is usually closed, or other out-of-the-ordinary situations occur. Examples of Suspicious Activity: An individual peering into vehicles, to try, and locate any valuables left unattended. An individual checking front doors of residences to locate any unattended packages, or individuals following delivery trucks to see where the truck is dropping off packages.

5 5 Page 5 Definition of Community Policing Community policing, or community-oriented policing, is a strategy of policing that focuses on police building ties and working closely with members of the communities.
