1 University of Miami Medical Campus Crime Summary Report December 2007 **Tip of the Month** STAYING ALERT FOR IDENTITY THEFT Once resolved, most cases of identity theft stay resolved. But occasionally, some victims have recurring problems. To help stay on top of the situation, continue to monitor your credit reports and read your financial account statements promptly and carefully. You may want to review your credit reports once every three months in the first year of the theft, and once a year thereafter. And stay alert for other signs of identity theft, like: Failing to receive bills or other mail. Follow up with creditors if your bills don't arrive on time. A missing bill could mean an identity thief has taken over your account and changed your billing address to cover his tracks. Receiving credit cards that you didn't apply for. Being denied credit, or being offered less favorable credit terms, like a high interest rate, for no apparent reason. Getting calls or letters from debt collectors or businesses about merchandise or services you didn't buy. Department of Justice (DOJ) The DOJ and its U.S. Attorneys prosecute federal identity theft cases. Information on identity theft is available at Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) The FBI, a criminal law enforcement agency, investigates cases of identity theft. The FBI recognizes that identity theft is a component of many crimes, including bank fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, bankruptcy fraud, insurance fraud, fraud against the government, and terrorism. Local field offices are listed in the Blue Pages of your telephone directory. U.S. Secret Service (USSS) The U.S. Secret Service investigates financial crimes, which may include identity theft. Although the Secret Service generally investigates cases where the dollar loss is substantial, your information may provide evidence of a larger pattern of fraud requiring their involvement. Local field offices are listed in the Blue Pages of your telephone directory. Financial Crimes Division
